4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, light and delightful...
Audrey Tautou makes this film more than what it would be without her. That's not to say that the plot is mediocre but without her the film itself wouldn't have stood out.As Amelie Audrey is wonderfully delightful, a true free spirit and a classic comedic talent. When Amelie finds a hidden tin in her apartment that belonged to a previous tenant she becomes determined to return it and once she has she decides to help others around her, from her father who's always wanted to vacation but never has because of Amelie's supposed heart condition as a child, to her workmate who needs a man.She tries helping an old man in her apartment as well as a tyrant grocer's assistant. But in the end she ends up helping herself for once and everything ends up happy. It's a very sweet story that's elevated by a brilliant performance by Audrey.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind
Amélie Poulain is a young woman who glides through the streets of Paris as quietly as a mouse. With wide eyes and a tiny grin, she sees the world in a magical light, discovering minor miracles every day. Having seen her share tragedies and fantasies, Amélie Poulain is not like other girls. Bursting with imagination, she enjoys simple pleasures until she discovers that her goal in life is to help others. Amélie dedicates her life to making people happy, and along the way, she stumbles upon her own happiness... residing in the man named Nino Quicampoix.

Guys put this one in your shopping basket for next valentine's day or your girlfriends birthday, she will love it. I do not know a single female who does not like this movie and you will even enjoy it yourselves. It is FUN, the best way I can describe it. 3-0 out of 5 stars An original and intriguing film weighed down by a too often illogical plot
I had been dancing around this French film (with subtitles) for several months, unsure how I would react to it, but I finally took the plunge and booked my passage to The City of Lost Children (La Cité des enfants perdus). Now I could sit here and ooh and aah all over the place about how beautiful and original this film is, but I have to give it to you straight: the story is almost completely illogical. This is one of your "most of what I learned about the film came from reading the plot summary" kind of movie. It's fascinating in its dark, fantastical way, of course, but I would really have liked to have a plot I could follow. The setting is unworldly - it's like they put Tim Burton, a couple of anime directors, Charles Dickens, and scores of German expressionists in a locked room and forced them to collaborate on the design of this world.Fortunately, the film does have one saving grace - young Judith Vittet. Not only does she turn in a masterful performance, she's the only buoy of sanity I could find in this ocean of craziness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Some Images Made Me Gasp, but as to the Plot...Sheesh
This film looks just amazing, but the plot is a jumbled mess of ideas borrowed from other movies and stories and it does not follow through on its own premises. But was there ever a more hideous, striking film image than the one of Daniel Emilfork straight on while dreaming his nightmares? Stunning closeups.
2-0 out of 5 stars b-o-r-i-n-g... but i guess i'm in the minority
I'll preface this by saying that i enjoyed Amelie, have seen my share of French film, admired & loved Dark City, and am not the least bit concerned with the supposed "pedophilism" that certain American conservative kooks apparently project onto the film. However, not long after the movie began i was already checking my watch, which is never a good sign.As visually interesting as the story was, i don't believe there are any interesting nor sympathetic characters. Each role is sorta thrown at the viewer without much rhyme or reason, and none end up as being particularly interesting.Sure, the sets are both blaring and mysterious, simultaneously evoking a mid-century cartoon and a noirish caper flick. The problem is that the story around the interesting visuals is... well... not very interesting.Realizing this is fantasy, i won't mention a dozen plot-holes large enough to sail a mine through, nor will I kvetch about the empty lack of any meaningful purpose for the goings-on that contribute to the lack of identifying with any of the characters.Even with all of the logic stripped out, this film still managed to bore me.Believe me, i wanted to like it, but it just wasn't happening.

5-0 out of 5 stars No DVD for English audiences?
Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the most inspired and creative directors alive. Anyone who has followed his films and likes them would agree. The "making of" extras on "The Longest Engagement" reveals how a director and a cohesive team of actors, technical experts, and artistic visionaries can collaborate over a long period of time to produce true works of art. "Amelie" is probably my favorite movie, because of its sheer beauty and how it touches my soul with a simple, human story. "City of Lost Children" also survives countless re-watching to explore its bizarre depths.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Ghoulish
It has English subtitles, but the action is sufficient to keep you laughing most of the time

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Musical, Artistic, Comical, and Entertaining
Being sick and tired of American movies, Franch moview are always refleshing.

2-0 out of 5 stars The black sheep of the series
Every Alien installment has had a new director at the helm, also bringing about a new style for the series. While Ridley Scott made a more clastrophobic sci-fi horror, James Cameron went all out and made a big combat movie and David Fincher made a more bleaker film which looked better and more "arty". After that film's failure, people thought the series was doomed and wrote it off until a 4th Alien film was announced with Jean-Pierre Jeunet at the helm, director of Delicatessen, City of Lost Children and the later film Amelie. So is it good? Heh...nope. Is there any redeeming quality to it at all? Well let's just say this: you know the film's in trouble when you actually have to think what was good about it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Uneeded and unwatchable.
I am willing it belive that the only reason that Sigourney Weaver agreed to star in this is because they offered her much more money than she was given in the previous three. This was not needed at all. If they were going to continue the Alien series, they could have at least have done it right. This is not done right at all. I agree with the majority of fans that the series trully ended with Aliens. Unless you are a diehard fan, move on and look at something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite
