5-0 out of 5 stars this movie is my all time fav and needs to be released on DVD
more of the same as other reviews have said......I am an anglophile of sorts and this film has been my favorite period historical drama since I was a teenager and saw it on tv years ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great period drama!
I think what makes "Anne of the Thousand Days" stand out among the period films churned out by Hollywood is the outstanding screenplay by Maxwell Anderson. While a few historical liberties are taken for the sake of the flow of the story, Anderson captures the tumultuous rise and catastrophic fall of a young English aristocratic lady who once caught the glance of a king. Richard Burton totally projects Henry VIII's obsessive, all-consuming lust that is willing to destroy his wife, his daughter, his best friends, his church and thousands of his subjects in order to obtain his lady. Richard looks at Genevieve Bujold (Anne Boleyn) with such a mix of torment, passion and guilt that it is almost as if he were looking at Elizabeth Taylor, but such is the great actor's ability to become Henry VIII in this film. Bujold is magnificent as Anne, graceful, witty, winsome, and strong-willed. I was struck by the unhappiness of the couple when they were finally together, living in opulence from the confiscated monasteries. Henry's love of Anne seemed to die almost as soon as he finally sated his desire for her. Bujold's Anne goes to her death with brash dignity, while Henry moves on to another wife. An incredible tragedy in which many innocent people suffered is well-depicted with authentic costumes and stunning sets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grows on you
I used to really hate this one for all the inaccuracies it contained. Then, as the years went by, I mellowed out and also saw some truly terrible adaptations of this same material. Every time I see this one, I like it more. The story of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn is inherently melodramatic, and so easy to get wrong. This film hits the mark far more often than it misses. It looks great, is cast superbly and tells an engaging, well-paced story. Yes, some license is taken (Katharine of Aragon is once again a dark, accented Spaniard, Thomas More isn't permitted to make his famous scaffold speech, Mary Boleyn is portrayed as "fallen" and abandoned, divorce was in fact common among 16th century nobility, etc.), and I still say that what 20th century writers invent often isn't as interesting as the real thing. Still, there's enough here to make it well worth the full purchase price, and it even tugs at the ol' heartstrings in a way few historical dramas do. Recommended! ... Read more

Editorial Review

You've probably seen comedies that won't make you laugh as hard as this deadly serious soap opera, drawn from the overheated oeuvre of literary shlockmeister Sidney Sheldon. Marie-France Pisier plays a poor little French girl who is seduced and abandoned and seduced and abandoned during World War II--until she finally figures out that she can profit from her body. She sleeps her way to stardom on the silver screen, then reinvolves herself with an American cad (John Beck) and gets him to kill his lovably obtuse rich wife (Susan Sarandon). You'll be howling. 5-0 out of 5 stars ASHAMED!!!
I am a little ashamed that my first review on Amazon wasn't this movie, instead I reviewed King Kong (new remake) - SHAME ON ME!!! This movie is fantastic! I remember watching it as a very young child and was mezmerized by it! It has a story, a creative concept, and a steller cast. The idea at the time was exciting because it was around the time of The Greatest American Hero and has some of the same kind of humor in it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD - Disney please re-release it
This is one of those movies that would have been a massive hit if it had had a star in it. However it is still a great movie with fantastic action set pieces and pretty good jokes. If you want to ask Disney to let you know when it's re-released use the link on the Disney DVD website and then follow instructions to be 'emailed when it is available'. (Can't post the link here on Amazon as it's a no no to include web addresses so do a search for Condorman on the Disney DVD site).

As costume dramas go, this is a passionate and feisty one, keyed by the ever-luminous Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and the sharp-edged Glenda Jackson as her jealous cousin, Queen Elizabeth I (who knew a thing or two about palace intrigue). Mary, who was raised in France as a Catholic, claims the Scottish crown from her mother upon her death. But she runsup against religious prejudice, both from the Protestant Elizabeth (who had encountered anti-Protestant bias before she took the throne) and from Mary's Protestant half-brother James Stuart (Patrick McGoohan). Elizabeth, whose own reign is shaky (given a strong Catholic presence in her country), is nervous about her Catholic cousin--and made more so by Mary's seeming inability to appreciate the political niceties of the period. Redgrave received an Oscar nomination for her performance. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent costume movie.
After reviewing several excellent notes at this site, I see little reason to rehashed the plot scenes and all that. In my humble opinon, I found this movie to be well made, well scripted and excellently acted. The two female stars, Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson proves to be at the top of their game. I think Redgrave captured Mary pretty well. Her Mary was a lovestruck woman who think implusively with her heart, rarely with her brain. But there is no doubt that Jackson was born to portaryed Elizabeth and her performance was fantastic as it was when she portaryed Elizabeth in that Masterpiece Theater series, Elizabeth R. Although Jackson was the supporting player in this movie and don't appeared much, her presence dominate the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 Stars?
Mary Queen of Scots, brings to the screen the story of Mary Stuart, the woman who ruled as queen of Scotland and whose son, James, would be king of England and Scotland.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent portrayal.
This is a wonderfully rich film which contextualises Mary's story from the end of her girlhood marriage into French Nobility through her return to Scotland and a her undoing at the hands of plotters and self serving hangers on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must see!
This movie was the first movie version of Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde that did not make me feel sorry for Dr.Jekyll at the end.The story telling and acting helped to bring forth the directors vision ( or at least what I believe is the directors vision) in showing the progression of Dr.Jekyll slowly becoming Mr.Hyde to the point where the only difference between one or the other is the face they wear.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom Through Violence
I agree with the other opinions that this version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale is by far the best adaptation to date.I actually give it 4 and 1/2 stars out of five.I'm still waiting for the film version that sticks strictly to the plot and outline of the original 1885 story.Anyway, the 1968 Dan Curtis production is the closest we have to the story and the most powerful (more than I can say for either the 1932 Frederic March flick or the 1941 Spencer Tracy effort).Jack Palance was tragically passed over for an Emmy and Golden Globe for his superb performance of Jekyll and Hyde.Having read the unabridged edition of Stevenson's tale and after seeing this film I realize (perhaps too late) how the story has always been a metaphor for drug addiction.Stevenson claimed he quickly wrote the story down after having a nightmare but this is hardly your typical Gothic horror tale. It's possible Stevenson never acknowledged the story's underlying genius.Whether we wish to admit it or not, Mr. Hyde exists in all of us and we all have our drug of choice (whether it be food, alcohol, presciption drugs, heroin, sex, religion, etc.) that can bring out the hidden realms of our personality. This is a lesson well taught by this wonderful and under-appreciated film.To paraphrase the words of one of the film's main characters, "If the wisdom of tomorrow is learned through the violence of today, can there really be a tomorrow?"

5-0 out of 5 stars a Faithful representation of the book
. I first saw this TV presentation back in 1969. Then, a local PBS station, in 1978, rebroadcast this presentation in which I've made a VHS tape of that broadcast. Now, after searching, this broadcast is available on DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad, but realistic
In early 1900s Yorkshire, England, three young children liberate a group of Shetland ponies that are being mistreated in the coal mines and whose reward for all their hard work is the glue factory. One pony in particular, dark-blinded Flash, is especially beloved by the kids. They get the miners behind their cause, and the whole town is turned upside down in the melee. The ending is quite sad, but that's the stuff of which Disney classics are made (Old Yeller, anyone?).
1-0 out of 5 stars This was the most depressing movie I've ever seen!
I first saw this movie when I was about 40 years old.Thankfully, I was watching it alone because I cried so hard at the end.Whenever I tell someone about the movie, it was so SAD that I could start crying just explaining what the movie was about. It was really good until the end and the ending was so disturbing, I would never watch it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars asurprising little gem
Its odd how the most underated films can really surprise you. I saw this film for the first time recently, and I regret now not seeing it as a child, I had put off seeing it for such a long time. I did not expect to get too involved about the welfare of a few pit ponies; but honestly the film; inc story; performances and attention to detail are so well done that it almost has a timeless quality about it. Modest as it is;be warned the happy ending only comes with a rather surprising price unexpected for disney in the 70s. Rosemary Anne Sisson, wrote the screenplay also penned 'Ride a Wild Pony' for disney which came out around the same time; also recommended as a companion to this film, hopefully one day that film will be released as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Worst Theme Song Ever!
This movie had a lot of potential. It could have been a fun adventure, but someone really blew it! The most obvious and glaring problem with this movie is the ridiculously poor theme song. I've heard a lot of annoying theme songs, but this one is so bad that I just can't fathom how anyone could have allowed it in the movie. The other main flaw has to do with casting. The actors playing the kids do a good job and the actors playing the Japanese soldiers do a good job, but the two leads just don't cut it. It may be poor acting, bad script writing, or bad directing, but something just doesn't click when the two lead actors engage in any kind of dialogue. Every word they say comes across as awkward and unnatural. All that being said, the kids and the actors playing the Japanese soldiers do come through with strong performances, it's just too bad that the two leads couldn't support their efforts a little more. Actually, the director should have just focused more on the kids and left the adults in the background. This movie really deserves to be remade (or if there is enough extra footage, re-edited!). It was a great idea that just wasn't executed to its full potential!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie
There are a number of new movies that are great for a family - but this is an old and timeless classic! Great movie!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
The Last Flight of Noah's Ark is about two strangers, two young children, and animals on a plane that crashes. They all end up on a remote island. The movie is good for family fun, but is a little unrealistic and is very predictable. It is unrealistic in the shark scene because the shark was moving too slowly and the water was too shallow. Also, the storm scene did not show the damage that it should have shown. Noah's Ark was predictable by the "boy - meets - girl - falls - in - love - and - marries" scene. In addition, nothing really bad happens. The movie is good to show how families come together and work together. Great for a Saturday afternoon, or a classroom. ... Read more

Rosemary Anne Sisson, wrote the screenplay also penned 'Ride a Wild Pony' for disney which came out around the same time; also recommended as a companion to this film, hopefully one day that film will be released as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD
I saw this movie many years ago and have been waiting for it to come to DVD.This story is especially relevant today, as the country hears more and more about terrorist cells within our midst. It was interesting to see how an everyday Joe trains (Hollywood style) to become an assassin and to follow the action as he avenges his sweetheart's death.

1-0 out of 5 stars Typical Anti-American NONSENSE
Typical freaking Hollywood anti-american nonsense!
3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but engrossing thriller

Great for a Saturday afternoon, or a classroom. ... Read more
