5-0 out of 5 stars Well constructed and spot-on
As a clinical psychologist who specializes in the development, analysis and evaluation of child sexual abuse interviews, I have reviewed many of the the materials associated with the real McMartin case. While I understand the nature of people who want to 'believe the children', it must also be known that there are some very bad interviewing practices which can affect how they remember events and what they report (not just children - adults as well). These kids were not fools, they were victims - but the McMartins were also victims. They were both victims of the very problematic interviewing techniques used in this case.I can tell you: not only was the portrayal fair, but it left out some of the most problematic interviewer behaviors. There were some interviewer behaviors so wildly inappropriate that viewers would never have believed they occurred. They did.
2-0 out of 5 stars They told the wrong story
I grew up in Manhattan Beach in the 80's. Luckily for me, I went to a different pre-school. I grew up with bumper stickers reading, "I believe the children." 5-0 out of 5 stars James Woods, Superstar
Armed with a perfect Verbal SAT score and an IQ of 180, intellectual powerhouse James Woods aces his portrayal of a defense attorney who, against the political might of the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, brings the best possible approximation of justice to a family falsely accused of committing the most heinous of non-capital crimes--a family already tried and convicted, though ambitious, reckless, and sensational reporting, in the court of public opinion.Read more

This warmhearted TV offering based on Mitch Albom's nonfictionbestseller of the same name dives right into the action, with Morrie (JackLemmon) collapsing within the first three minutes. Then it's cut to Mitch'shectic life as a sports columnist cum television host and long-term, oftenlong-distance boyfriend. But this Mick Jackson-directed film slowsconsiderably after the introductions as former student Mitch (Hank Azaria)learns his beloved professor is dying of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Hereconnects with his mentor and begins learning from him all over again, thistime about life. Oprah Winfrey produced this 88-minute film, and her renownedtouchy-feely quality is prominent as Mitch learns to love both Morrie and hisown girlfriend. 5-0 out of 5 stars My VHS copy gets a grade of "F"
As a biology teacher, I bought a used copy of this marvelous film although I spent less than $50.However, the quality of the tape is so poor that students had a difficult time understanding the conversations. And, as a teacher, to spend a larger amount of my own money is out of the question. How unfortunate that the idea of use in the classroom made this unavailable for interested persons as well as teachers wishing to use it.
5-0 out of 5 stars DVD version needed!
I have been searching high and low for a DVD version of this movie but now I know that the movie is only available in VHS. Who's watching VHS now? This is one great movie about the search of the DNA molecular structure and it should be updated to DVD.
4-0 out of 5 stars unavailable
It is a great movie. This is a moot point, however, since it is currently unobtainable. Maybe I'll enroll in a high school biology class at age 32 so that I can watch this movie again.

Everybody wants to get close to her, but someone out there wants her dead. In steps legendary bodyguard Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner, Waterworld) to advise the star and her camp on how to protect Rachel. They begin to fall in love, much to their mutual surprise. Can Farmer keep Rachel alive and separate his feelings for her when it counts?

5-0 out of 5 stars Volcano Shows It's Stuff.
Although it is a far-fetched plot when you first hear it, the filming of it makes you believe that it could happen. That plates underneath the soil of L.A. could possibly shift hard enough for lava to burst through. Tommy lee Jones, in his usual everyman role, plays a father trying to keep his life together when reports of a possible Volcano threat surface. Like always, proffesionals and specialits claim that that kind of incident would never happen but, through building reports, it does. A classic disaster movie with heroes sacrificing left and right to insure the safety of their fellow men. Lots of cool special effects and lots of great deep-thinking acting. A good buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars awful, awful, awful [...]
i think everything that needs to be said about this movie has already been said. i actually couldn't bear to watch it right through so maybe it suddenly got really good right after the bit where the guy's hanging off a firetruck ladder over an advancing lava flow which is so hot his shoes are melting, but the metal of the ladder is still somehow cool enough to hold onto with bare hands. but it's pointless to start nitpicking since the whole rotten film is one giant, err, nit i suppose. i only gave one star because there's no zero-star option.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Release ofVolcano Movie
Overall, I thought the movie was stupid and a waist of time.I though the movie did not have much plot to it and felt it could have been much better.I did like the special effects that were used. Tommy Lee Jones was a good actor and played his part.I would wait to rent it and not own it as my own copy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Reaffirms my opinion
While this movie was well written and acted, it did strengthen my opinion about those in the media.I know alot of people may disagree with me on this, but in this film I saw nothing more than sick, egotistical vultures scrambling around trying to find "the next big story" with little regard to the people they hurt. For those of you who view the media of being comprised of elitist know-it-alls, watching this movie will assure you that your assessment is correct.
3-0 out of 5 stars Sound and Fury
This is probably a fairly accurate representation of how newscasters operated in Iraq during the Desert Storm War, and of how they operate in general in front-line, crisis situations. I think the movie was aiming at evoking viewers' admiration for the newscasters' courage and stamina in "getting the story." It was supposed to be a paean to CNN as it established itself as a credible, round-the-clock news source during this War. But for me, the movie had the opposite effect. It showed how rash and ultimately futile most of the media people's actions on the scene were.
1-0 out of 5 stars Making Money Will Win Out
The movie portrays a group of CNN reporters grappling with journalistic ethics and the hazards of reporting in a modern war-zone. The message the film generally sends to its audience, although a bit corny, is that nations can avoid conflict by discussion and, of course, CNN would like to be the ones to orchestrate and film it.In the film Robert Wiener is a pushy on-location producer who is know for doing anything to get a story.Ingrid Formanek is his assistant producer and she turns the hardened journalist away from pursuing the risky ultimate story by reminding him of his family; really pulls those heart strings huh?As stated above the plot is beyond cheesy; it is simply Hollywood entertaining us with the typical fast love and action story. Although Mick Jackson and HBO might say differently, what happened in Baghdad was probably very different then what happened in the film.

4-0 out of 5 stars "You're going to be locked up, until we find out if you are sane or insane."
Chattahoochee (1989) is a film inspired by true events of a man, after returning home from the Korean war, went crazy go nuts, got hisself locked up in a state loony bin, documented and reported all the abuses he saw and experienced, which eventually led to reforms of the system for public provided care of the mentally ill. Directed by Mick Jackson (L.A. Story, The Bodyguard), the film stars Gary Oldman (Sid and Nancy, Romeo Is Bleeding) as the Emmett Foley, a certified hero in the Korean conflict and a certified nut at home. Also appearing is Dennis Hopper (True Romance, Space Truckers), Frances McDormand (Fargo, Johnny Skidmarks), Pamela Reed (Cadillac Man, Kindergarten Cop), Ned `Squeal Like a Pig' Beatty (Rudy, Radioland Murders), and M. Emmet Walsh (Slap Shot, The Jerk, Blade Runner).
5-0 out of 5 stars Moving
This movie is very moving. I saw this because I saw that Gary Oldman was in it and I will watch any movie he is in. I am glad I did, because this is one of his best performances, even as a young as he was. Based on a true story, Chattahoochee mainly takes place in an insane asylum. Dennis Hopper is also very effective as another inmate. The breadth of emotional range and display is amazing out of both actors. This movie also makes me wish Gary Oldman got more lead roles; he can carry a film like no other and is a much better actor than any one else out there (respectively). Anyone looking for a very deep, involving, emotional story that is based on true events should be looking here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Completely Biased, I Admit...
Truthfully, I know nothing of this movie's history, nothing of the actual events from which it was taken. However, considering the film for film's value alone, its strengths are easily indentifiable. Gary Oldman is absolutely brilliant. Any fan who simply loves to watch him work, loves to study each inflection of his ever changable features, will be in heaven just as I was. Though there are many movies of his I enjoy more - few display his breadth and depth so completely. He's nearly flawless here, and is present in almost every scene. Dennis Hopper is also uncomfortably believable, and the supporting cast was perfect (Frances McDormand, Ned Beatty, Pamela Reed). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Docudrama based on real events in the CIA/KGB war
Based largely on declassified transcripts, this is a very well-done reconstruction of the events surrounding a major scandal that ripped apart the CIA in the 1960s and 1970s. James Angleton was then chief of counter-intelligence, and after his close friend Kim Philby defected to the Soviet Union, Angleton grew increasingly obsessed with finding other Soviet moles in the highest ranks of U.S. intelligence. One defector (Golitsyn) played into the fears of the hawks by emphasizing the seriousness of the Soviet threat; another defector (Nosenko) insisted there was no serious threat. Following closely on the heals of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Kennedy assassination, the choice on whom to believe carried serious implications for U.S. security. In an unsuccessful effort to break Nosenko, Angleton and his staff put Nosenko into solitary confinement for almost three years--and though major inconsistencies were uncovered in Nosenko's story, he was never broken. In the course of the investigation, Angleton's drive to uncover the Soviet mole(s) in the CIA ruined the careers of more than forty people; the scandal that followed led to Angleton's dismissal, and the CIA's inclination to wash its hands of HUMINT (human intelligence sources) in favor of SIGINT (technology-driven intelligence). This opened the way for later Soviet infiltrations (Walker, Ames, Hansen), but also set an unfortunate precedent--the CIA's distrust of HUMINT--that seriously undermined U.S. security in the post-Cold War era.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very authentic film-Great acting!
The video is well rounded. The characters are based from the legendary members of the C.I.A. This is a true story. This video is highly recommended for its: to the point approach and gives a cold-war feel in history.

Directed by Mick Jackson and starring Tommy Lee Jones as Steve Daley, Josef Sommer as James Angleton and Oleg Rudnik as Yuri Nosenko. Yuri Nosenko: KGB presents a well acted and interesting examination of the defection Yuri Nosenko, an intelligence officer with the Second Chief Directorate of the KGB. How due to the influence of Anatoli Golitsyn a paranoid KGB intelligence officer that defected to the United States in 1961, Nosenko was incarcerated for over three years. It does a good job of representing the conflict that is caused by Nosenko's defection and the damage that it did to the moral of the Central Intelligence Agency. Unfortunately, Yuri Nosenko:KGB fails to properly represent many of the facts of the case correctly, and simply misrepresents many others. ... Read more

Read more
