Editorial Review

Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the somber tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humor soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humor and somber drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. Editorial Review

Kids love this Muppet take on Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate classic, about the pirate Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his takeover of a ship in order to track down buried treasure. His friend and then nemesis is earnest cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop), who teams with the captain of the ship (Kermit the Frog) and several shipmates (including Gonzo, Ratso, and Fozzie) to foil Long John's nefarious plot. An odd subplot finds Captain Kermit stopping at a desert island to find his long-lost love (Miss Piggy--who else?). The Muppets have not lost their wild sense of humor, which works on enough levels to amply entertain children and their parents in imaginative fashion. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our kids sing the songs all the time!
Our kids (2, 3, 8 years old) absolutely love this movie, especially the soundtrack. After we've watched it, they go around for days singing the songs. I love the Muppets, too, and this movie is certainly not a hardship for parents to view along with their kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie!!
Great movie- laughs all the way through!!The songs are excellent and Tim Curry is hilarious.Muppets do it again! We have the video, but won't part with it until we replace it witht the DVD.I can't wait to receive it!!!!!!:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it alone for the extras...
I remember seeing this in the movie theaters way back, and even then I found this to be an entertaining movie. Now seeing it again on DVD, it still holds the same delight.Of course, I'm a Muppet fan *and* a Tim Curry fan, so this one is right up my alley. But seriously, the director's commentary is superb. The information Brian Henson offers during the movie is entertaining (and he's just amusing to listen to), plus the 'Hidden Treasure' clips are great!Watch for Tim Curry arguing with a Muppet version of himself.I know, if you've seen the movie, it is hard to tell the difference. ;) ... Editorial Review

This ambitious miniseries begins with Jack's descendant (Matthew Modine) and works its way backward to the story of the original young man and the beanstalk. Because the first Jack used that towering vine to steal a giant's magic goose and harp, an entire world was reduced to poverty and a bloodline was cursed--all Robinson men die in their 40s, and the modern-day Jack is around that age. Fortunately, Ondine (Mia Sara), a visitor from the giant's alternative reality, has a plan. If she and Jack can recover the stolen items in time, they may be able to solve both problems. The made-for-TV movie boasts top stars (including Vanessa Redgrave and Jon Voight) and Jim Henson's Creature Shop's nifty special effects. Although children younger than 10 may find the complex narrative confusing and the implied violence scary, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Filling in the backstory behind a famous tale
Jack and the beanstalk is one of the more famous stories in western literature, and it was only a matter of time before Hallmark made a movie version of it.The twist here is that it is the present day, and the Jack of the story is the latest in a long line of men, none of whom have lived past their 30th birthday. What gives?Jack finds out from a beautiful woman named Ondine who takes him to a land above the heavens. It turns out Jack's ancestor, also named Jack, had traveled up to this land and stolen a magic goose from the giant, and taken it back down to earth.Because of this, Jack, and all of his male ancestors were cursed to never live past their 30th birthday. The modern day Jack, with some love and inspiration by Ondine, does the right thing and returns the goose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful color, exquisite 5.1 sound, dazzling special effects and puppetry.
I loved this version of the fairytale. The widescreen transfer is abolutely stunning on a 16 x 9 TV.Be aware this is over 3 hours long, and it does drag a bit towards the end, but a brief intermission during the movie, will overcome this.Get the DVD for the beautiful color, special effects, and 5.1 sound - they will amaze you! P.S.The DVD jacket says 1.33 aspect, but I set my TV on 16 x 9 - and it was Perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars New on twist on an old Tale
Very well done, just the right amount of action and suspense.

Considering all the myriad BAD business decisions they've been making lately (they *really* passed on distributing Moore's new film?WHEW, they're gonna regret that!) 4-0 out of 5 stars More good episodes
In "Til the Blood Runs Clear," our heroes become involved with bounty hunters while having repairs made on Crichton's module. There is some good interaction between Crichton and D'Argo, and there are some characters and plot points introduced here that will pay off in a big way many episodes from now.In "Rhapsody in Blue," we meet a group of Delvian dissidents with an unscrupulous leader who is not above deceiving Zhaan and playing with the memories of the other Moya crewmembers in order to get what she wants. Two good solid episodes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crichton continues to set things straight on "Farscape"
This is my first trip through the "Farscape" universe and by the time I have gotten halfway through Season 1 my recurring thought is that John Crichton (Ben Browder) really needs to stop hogging the stage. Now, I understand that this earth astronaut stuck in a galaxy far, far away is our conduit into this particular science fiction realm, but I am really much more interested in the other characters on Moya. The recurring plot element at this point in the series is that every time one of the others becomes the focus point, Crichton is required to save the day.4-0 out of 5 stars Two Great FARSCAPE Episodes
One of the things that the FARSCAPE tv series does so well is explore the boundaries of television science fiction and take on the task of giving their stories interesting turns and twists of both plot and characterisation. The sixth DVD disc of the first season is no exception to this rule.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Problematic characterization mars otherwise excellent ep
One of the best things about "Farscape" that sets it apart from most SF programs is that there is genuine conflict among the main characters, who do not all necessarily share the same agenda.Even so, the viciousness and back-stabbing that they display in "DNA Mad Scientist" is way over the top. When the mad scientist of the title demands that the crew give him one of Pilot's arms in exchange for his help, they immediately comply, hacking the desired appendage off while Pilot screams and struggles. They then fall to plotting against each other.I understand the time constraints of a television program, but it simply doesn't ring true for our heroes to be at each other's throats within the first few minutes of the episode without suitable build-up.It's not that I don't think D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Zhaan (Virginia Hey), and Rygel incapable of such behavior, it that it was too abrupt.Especially when they are positively tender with each other in the next episode, the far superior "Secret."This pivotal episode sets in motion certain events that will have enormous consequences in episodes to come...

2-0 out of 5 stars It's No Secret, One of these episodes is really bad.
As you can tell from my title, one of these episodes does not impress me at all.4-0 out of 5 stars The bad side and the good side of the Farscape crew
Volume 5 of Season 1 of "Farscape" offers up an interesting counterpoint between two episodes that show the characters at their worst and at their best as crewmates. In "DNA Mad Scientist" D'Argo, Zhaan and Rygel barely blink before they cut off one of Pilot's arms in order to trade it for a crystal that will show them how to get home and avoid the Peacekeepers. At that point they turn on each other in the great tradition of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre."Meanwhile, the titular mad scientist turns Aeryn into an intergalactic guinea pig in one of those plotlines I hate where playing with DNA has characters evolving/devolving with the greatest of ease, leaving it to Crichton to restore sanity and order to our dysfunctional little family.Read more

Well, here I have been watching the Season 1 "Farscape" DVDs and praising the tag-team great commentaries I had been enjoying as the best in fan friendly extras (not to mentioning why Joss Whedon has been so skimpy with such commentaries on the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" DVDs).So I get to Volume 4, which is the best pair of episodes I have seen to date, and guess what: no commentaries.I was all ready to give this volume 5 stars but I have to subtract one in protest because I am so disappointed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Farscape
"Nerve" and "The Hidden Memory" are a two-part story that gathers together the various plot threads of the Farscape story and launches some ambitious story arcs that will figure prominently for the remainder of the series.Crichton (Ben Browder) and Chiana (Gigi Edgley) infiltrate a Peacekeeper base to obtain genetic material that is necessary to save Aeryn's (Claudia Black) life while the remainder of the crew remains aboard Moya to attend the birth of her child.Crichton falls into the clutches of Scorpius (Wayne Pygram), a hybrid being working with the Peacekeepers who is determined to rip the secret of wormhole technology from his mind.
4-0 out of 5 stars Two of the best first season episodes
Farscape was a mixed bag during the first season; the best episodes rank with anything produced by the Trek franchise or Babylon 5. What made Farscape unique is the quirky sense of humor at the core of every episode. It's the first series since Tom Baker's Dr. Who era to wink at the audience while serving and exciting premise or boots to the floor action episodes for dinner.

"The Flax" is memorable for presenting the first real intimations of the Crichton/Aeryn (Ben Browder/Claudia Black) romance that will later prove to be such an anchor for the series. The bickering couple is stranded in an energy-dampening space trap and must make some hard choices as they face the very real possibility of impending death.Meanwhile, D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) must also make some hard choices, as he agonizes over which is the greater priority: rescuing his erstwhile crewmates or searching a Luxon derelict for information about his missing son.

With these two excellent episodes, Farscape began a run of outstanding shows that would introduce many pivotal elements and characters that would figure prominently for the remainder of the series.Prior to these programs, it was still a very fine program, but here (and even more so with the next two episodes) it began to shows signs of the excellence that was still to come.

In all that is good in the world please do not opt for this DVD collection. 4-0 out of 5 stars D'Argo takes center stage
In "Back and Back...," Crichton (Ben Browder) and company rescue a scientist and his assistant from their imploding spacecraft. In the process, Crichton begins to suffer from time flashes wherein he experiences the future, thereby becoming aware that the mysterious assistant has a deadly secret. There is a lot of good characterization here and a tantalizing hint at D'Argo's (Anthony Simcoe) past.I like the way that so many Farscape episodes turn on Crichton's disarming manner of just leveling with other characters and telling them the truth rather than contriving unlikely deceptions to resolve plot points.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring a Different Uncharted Territory
The pilot episode of Farscape lets us know these stories take place in the Uncharted Territories. But starting with the episodes featured on this disc, we see that these uncharted territories include the souls of Moya and her crew.5-0 out of 5 stars D'Argo's Time To Shine

In what seems like mere moments he finds himself aboard a living vessel named Moya with a group of escaped convicts trying desperately to outrun a race called the Peacekeepers and their leader whose brother Crichton accidentally caused to perish. In order to escape these forces, the crew of Moya are forced to head into the Uncharted Territories, knowing that they will be followed but that at least the pull of the Peacekeepers isn't a strong as it is elsewhere. Yes, space isn't what it seems.
