5-0 out of 5 stars very competent B sci fi
since the other review is a little harsh I thought I would up its star rating. anyway I did like this a lot. It is one of the better examples of b sci fi and is something I will always try to keep a copy of. wish it was on dvd. the premise is somewhat similar to minority report (without all that big budget stuff). judgement for murder in the future is as follows: they go back in time and kill you before you even start committing crimes. I'm a sucker for time travel stuff. I didnt really like minority report much so I can honestly say I prefer this. the 5 stars? well, B sci fi doesnt get much better than this.

1-0 out of 5 stars POOR BASICS BRING EXPECTED RESULTS.
To be successful, science fiction and science fantasy must rely, in whichever modes they appear, upon creation of a sense of wonder parented by imagination, with cinematic examples being legion, from THINGS TO COME to BLADERUNNER, but unfortunately films of this genre are too often devoid of imaginative structure.Such is the case with this low budget effort shot in and about Vancouver (representing Seattle) and featuring Eric Roberts, who has referred to himself as "the king of B movies", an infirm distinction at best, and in the event here nothing of which to be proud, with his co-leads seemingly being stunt and demolition performers.A rather disjointed plot is set in a present visited by three individuals from a near future (2023) who move into their past to eliminate crime at its source by executing criminals-in-the-making, and while one is soon aware that time travel paradoxes are rife, they are sublimated by a glut of vehicle chases, explosions, and lengthy gun fights during which injuries are scarce. There are so-called "special effects" a-plenty, not very well done, and obviously a misplaced expenditure of future resources for the lone purpose of eradicating a small coterie of four teenagers who are engaged in selling weapons to other teens, but they do provide rationale for countermeasures utilized by Seattle P.D. detective Dylan Cutter (Roberts) who moves from one crime scene to another in his personal older Chevrolet Camaro ( equipped with red light, etc.), a particularly notable feat since the car is totaled early on in a collision with an oversized van.But then, such flaws in continuity and logic are fundamental when substitutes for imagination are wielded, as in this film that squanders talented performers such as Nick Mancuso and Saul Rubinek who are cast as two of the time travelers, along with a hearty effort by Laurie Holden, who plays Cutter's partner, to infuse her character with some depth, so that a viewer finally focuses upon the camerawork and lighting skills of cinematographer John Houtman as items of true imaginative quality. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars DOUBTING AMY
Since her breakthrough role as Carrie's friend in the classic Brian De Palma CARRIE, Amy Irving has played a variety of roles, most noticeably her Oscar nominated turn in YENTL and her spirited turn in CROSSING DELANCEY.Donald Sutherland, never Oscar nominated, but definitely a should have been for ORDINARY PEOPLE, also has taken a lot of chances in his long career.Together you would expect a great chemistry and fireworks to light the screen.Sadly to say, this doesn't happen in this by the book thriller.Even stalwarts such as Christopher McDonald, Theodore Bikel and Graham Greene don't ignite any sparks. The scenery is gorgeous and the plot does take an unexpected twist towards the end, but all in all, director Jonathan Heap doesn't build enough tension and suspense to make this anything more than an okay thriller.McDonald's death scene is almost funny as one other reviewer notes and Greene's dispatch is cruelty to the max.Rider Strong (Cabin Fever) in his first role shows the potential talent he will realize in future films.3-0 out of 5 stars Puzzling little yarn
I wasn't sure if I should give this flick 1-star for being so bad or 5-stars for being so bad it's good, so I went for the happy medium of 3. If you enjoy poorly scripted, odd, formulaic thrillers like I do, then this is right up your alley. 2-0 out of 5 stars benefit of the slouch
This by-the-numbers thriller is elevated by better than average direction by Jonathon Heap and the performance of Donald Sutherland, as a sly gentlemanly criminal recalling his Nazi undercover in Eye of the Needle. Here he is released from prison having been convicted of murdering his wife and now intent on rekindling a relationship with the daughter (Amy Irving) who testified against him. Irving appears to be slumming, playing the daughter as a foul-mouthed white trash waitress in a topless bar, but she adds nothing that any number of actors could bring to the part. Sutherland's first obstacle is to convince Amy that her mother's death was an accident, and once that is overcome, then he must confront anyone that threatens his idea of family, which includes Amy's gratuitous son. Heap actually makes Sutherland's pathology amusing in a perverse way, though we know what to expect when the father's first action is to smash in a window, since behaviour defines character. Sutherland looks heftier than usual though perhaps that's in direct ratio to Amy's anorexia, recalling her bulemic in Kleptomania. Location footage was done at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona where we see beautifully eroded rock formations, and a cave with an eroded interior. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BOMBS AWAY
The irreppressible and sometimes laconic Stephen Baldwin stars in this thriller, which isn't bad for a straight to video movie.Baldwin plays one of this militant activists who mans an organization called R.A.M.On one particular mission to prove that water is being tainted, something goes wrong and one of his sidekicks is killed (his girlfriend) and another, Jeremy disappears.Afterwards, a serial bomber is taking care of those people he or she feels is responsible for ruining the earth. It's all been done before, but director Jonathan Heap keeps the action tense and suspenseful. One big problem is there is never any explanation as to how the bomber manages to get a glass paperweight and a glass duck into the buildings of his victims?Baldwin is appropriately stoic, Kelly Rowan is fine as the ATF agent who becomes his "friend";Tom Skerritt is durable as always as the crusty mentor of Rowan; and D.B. Sweeney oozes righteous insanity as the bomber. All in all, GREENMAIL is an entertaining if somewhat derivative film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good story in a good setting
The story starts out with a bang and then unfolds into the plot.Stephen Baldwin seems to play himself at times in this movie. It gets a little slow once or twice because Jonathan Heap is getting across a message to protect the environment. The supporting cast of Tom Skerritt and Kelly Rowan does a good job of keeping the story on track when Stephen Baldwin is delivering that message. Not a fun movie if you don't believe in global warming or stopping the destruction of our natural habitats. If you give the Day After Tomorrow 5 Stars you will give this one 4 or 5 Stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A BORING MOVIE
AN EX-CON [STEPHEN BALDWIN] HELPS THE POLICE GO AFTER A SERIAL BOMBER. HAS A COUPLE OF GOOD ACTORS IN ITS CAST, BUT THE STORY IS POORLY PACED AND THE SCRIPT IS WEAK. NOT TO MENTION, THE ACTION SCENES ARE ALSO BAD. THIS MOVIE IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. THIS MOVIE AIN'T NO BETTER OR DIFFERENT THAN ANY OF THE OTHER DIRECT TO VIDEO ACTION MOVIES THAT YOU'LL SEE IN THE ACTION SECTION OF YOUR LOCAL VIDEO STORE. ... Read more
