3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing like the movie
I too would highly recommend the book over the movie. Except for the title and the names of the characters this movie has little to do with the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Shepherd of the Hills
I watched this movie after having read the book.Unfortunately, the movie twisted the whole story around and was not true to the book at all.I felt that the book was an uplifting story and the movie was much darker.I guess the movie is okay, if you haven't read the book, but I would have loved to see the story told as it was in the book.I would highly recommend the book "The Shepherd of the Hills" over the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNKNOWN CLASSIC
This film is one of the finest low profile American films I have ever seen. It deserves a much wider audience. Visually it is absolutely stunning. The scenery, especially that of Moanin Meadow, always makes me yearn for summer in the Adirondacks. The color is rich and lends perfectly to the visual landscape. The narrative realizes the haunting quality of its story. Every performer in this film lends exceptional support to the drama. Beulah Bondi was never better and the always enjoyable Marc Lawrence is an absolute suprise, perfect in a part you would not associate him with. The theme music, later heard as a song sung by Fuzzy Knight, has a wonderfully sentimental quality. Sadly, this film is not available on dvd as of this writing. Get the vhs copy; it is worth it. Harry Carey, John Wayne, Betty Field, Marjorie Main, the whole cast all hit the target. It just renews my spirit every time I watch it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Please Put On DVD!!!!!!1
Please put this great early technicolor film classic in DVD so that humble people such as myself can afford it. Thanks!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A TECHNICOLOR MILESTONE.
Fred MacMurray plays a city stranger getting caught up in the lives of a primitive Kentucky mountain family and their feud with a neighbouring clan.Sylvia Sidney is good as the girl he tries to educate and comes to love and Hank Fonda scores as the disapproving brother who is killed befored the feud is settled. Beulah Bondi is terrific as usual as is Fuzzy Knight in this saga filmed in the full-hue great outdoors. Paramount ventured away from black and white features for the first time since 1930 with THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE.The studio had been waiting for an improved 3-colour Technicolor to be perfected, and the new process enhanced the Walter Wanger production's appeal immensely, both on the screen and at the box-office.This was the third filming of John Fox, Jr.'s novel, and the best: the 1916 and 1923 versions had nothing to compare with the pictorial scope and cast strength of the modernised screenplay, written by Grover Jones, Harvey Thew and Horace McCoy.Henry Hathaway directed with a straighforward drive.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a Good Idea to Steer Clear of the Hillfolk
Just finished watching "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" and I have rather mixed feelings about it. I can't say I liked it; in fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't. However, the technicolor treatment is wonderful--the film looks very fresh, and it is only when you see how young Henry Fonda and Fred MacMurray are that you know this is in fact quite an old movie. I didn't care for Sylivia Sydney's role as the daughter of one feudfamily who takes a liking to railway engineer MacMurray even though she's sort of engaged to her cousin, Fonda (such consanguinuity doesn't bode well for the next generation, I'm afraid). All the trouble in the film stems from her actions, but no one in the movie seems to notice that. I would have much preferred if someone would have at least yelled at her for that, but no. So in that way, she reminded me of Maria in "West Side Story", who got the bright idea to send Tony to stop that rumble, where he just happened to kill her brother--oops. There's a scene when Sylvia demands that MacMurray kill some of the opposing clan in retribution for a recent murder. Rather than just stand there with no reaction, this ought to have been an epiphany for MacMurray's character, where he realizes that she is just like everyone else in her clan, blood thirsty. It is worth seeing that technicolor wilderness, but maybe pass on the story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars John Wayne is always great
I enjoyed this movie despite Glen Campbell's clunky acting.I had seen it before, years ago and it was still as entertaining.

3-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for snakes!
The story of True Grit reminds me, a tad, of Hang Them High.John Wayne, playing a U.S. Marshall called Rooster Cogburn, is hired by a strong willed young girl, played by Kim Darby, to bring back the man who killed her father.
5-0 out of 5 stars wayne makes this movie work
this is the movie that won john wayne his oscar and while he is very good i think he has had better roles than this but not as colorful. something happens here as wayne goes away and "fat" rouster cogburn shows up. wayne makes you feel every sore, pain and even every drink he takes. the action of helping a girl hunt down her fathers killer is really just a jumping off point so that wayne can work his magic and turn an ok western into a great one!! ... Even people habitually hostile to John Wayne movies tend to cast an indulgent eye on this rumbustious comedy-Western--partly because the Alaska gold rush setting seems more exotic than, say, Texas or Arizona, and because there are no Indians to discriminate against and no macho gunplay to fret about. As for John Wayne as all-purpose icon of male chauvinism, Big Sam McCord (the Duke) spends much of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Northto Alaska 1960
This rousing comedy-adventure set in the Alaskan gold rush finds buddies Sam (John Wayne 1907-1979) and George (Stewart Granger 1913-1993) hitting the mother lode in Nome . George then asks Sam to fetch his sweatheart Jennie in Seatle . But when sam discovers that she has married someone else he concocts a plan to bring George a new love , inviting a beautiful dancer (Capucine 1931-1990) to be Jennies replacement . Even though "North To Alaska" is a rousing western , it was a dramatic change for John Wayne as an actor . More famous for throwing punches than punch lines , he was given a change to also show his lighter side and play for laughs . Made on place In Alska and Washington .Razor sharp transfer and a movie your keep for many years . Higly Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars North to Alaska
this is one of John wayne's ventures into comedy. The movie is based on Johnny Horton's song where Sam McCord and George Pratt go to Alaska during the gold rush and strike it rich, while George pines away for his Sweet Jenny. That's where the similarity ends. In the movie, Sam, played by John Wayne, goes back to Seattle to bring Jenny back, while George, and Brother Billy, remain behind to build a honeymoon home for Jenny. Sam arrives at Seattle only to find Jenny married to another man.Sam has a few drinks and convinces a saloon showgirl to go back with him, as a bride for George. Then the fun begins.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My family hated this movie; in fact, they hated it so much it has become an in-joke.Apparently stating this in my review has gotten me several "not helpful" votes, but I bought the DVD based on all the positive reviews, and I think prospective buyers should be warned that not everyone finds this a 5-star movie. It has not aged well. There are some John Wayne movies that are among our all-time favorites (McClintock, the Quiet Man), and I was really looking forward to this one, especially since we had just been to Alaska. However, the story was uninteresting, the direction was uneven, the comedy (mostly bar fights) felt forced and awkward and the movie never "gelled".Stewart Granger did not seem to know what he was doing or why his character was there.Fabian's acting was unmemorable and we felt Capucine was miscast. We got bored and spent half the movie pointing out to each other how little the sandy beaches and desert terrain looked anything like Alaska (it was obviously shot in southern California).I gave it two stars because I was able to sit through the entire thing, but I spent most of it asking myself "why? Why am I wasting my time like this?" ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Noir-esque cold-case thriller.
Jimmy Stewart and Lee J. Cobb star in this noir-esque cold-case thriller.Stewart plays the hard-nosed big-city reporter in 1942 who is assigned to investigate a cop-killer case from 1932.Stewart becomes involved in the case when he reports on the sad story of the old lady who scrubs floors for a living and saves every dime to get her convict son out of prison. The story is very popular with the news-paper reading public, so Stewart is assigned to investigate the case.Stewart cynically follows the leads, believing that the convict is guilty but following the human interest angle.Ultimately he becomes convinced of his subject's innocence and Stewart is involved in race against the clock to get the falsely accused man out of prison.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answering the call at Northside 777
A really good film noir from Jimmy Stewart. It has a documentary style that may come off a little stilted today but is still a fine character piece. The film remains suspenseful until the end and has a "good" ending but not necessarily the "happy" ending. The climactic scene has a plot hole you can drive a truck through, but who cares?Jimmy Stewart is in great form as a cynical reporter. There is fine support coming from Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte. Its a tale of guilt and innocence in gangland Chicago.

4-0 out of 5 stars When Reporters Were the Good Guys
Jimmy Stewart plays a Chicago newspaper reporter. His editor is intrigued by a simple add in the paper. A reward of $5000 is offered for information on the murder of a policeman. The murder is over a decade old. A man has already been convicted of the murder and is serving a life sentence. What interest, the editor wants to know, would anybody have in an old murder? He assigns Jimmy Stewart to find out.

Richard Widmark's bravura debut as snickering gangster Tommy Udo, and particularly his infamous encounter with an old woman in a wheelchair, enjoys such pop cachet that the movie itself has been somewhat underrated. More's the pity. Henry Hathaway's third entry in 20th Century–Fox's series of post–WWII thrillers is just about the best of the bunch. These films incorporated the semidocumentary techniques and wondrously persuasive on-location shooting Hollywood learned from Italian neorealism and the wartime filming of some of its own best directors. 3-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VINTAGE NOIR

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic From the 1940s
This movie is an excellent buy for those who enjoy classics of the 1930s - 40s. I especially enjoyed Richard Widmark's performance in his first role as the unstable, evil-laughing gangster Tommy Udo. Victor Mature does a respectable job as the former miscreant trying to start a clean new life by cutting a deal with the district attorney to "squeal" on the nasty Udo. All-in-all, it's an enjoyable classic that I would definitely recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Camera Work and a Memorable Villain Highlight This Film Noir.
"Kiss of Death" was directed by Henry Hathaway based on an unpublished story by Eleazar Lipsky, who had been a district attorney in New York city. Hathaway also made "Call Northside 777" and "The House on 92nd Street", both docudramas inspired by true stories, and he tried to accentuate the authenticity of this material as well. The film was shot on location in New York. Those really are the Criminal Courts and Chrysler buildings and The Tombs and Sing Sing prisons. In fact, Hathaway had the cast "processed" through Sing Sing to add a dose of realism to their performances. One could debate which of Hathaway's films, "Kiss of Death" or "The Dark Corner", is the more "noir". They both qualify but deviate considerably from noir themes at times. "The Dark Corner"'s Bradford Galt is a quintessential noir protagonist, while "Kiss of Death" is best remembered for its villain, the sadistic Tommy Udo, who launched Richard Widmark into a series of unforgettable low-life roles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic film about the heroics of an honourable man
While this 1951 biographical film on WWII German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel is stylistically dated, "The Desert Fox" is a decent enough documentary about key moments in his life between 1941 to 1944.
4-0 out of 5 stars A tale of a great fox and many rats
It is interesting how often the losing sides in great conflicts often throw-up great military leaders. Just as the Confederacy had Robert E Lee in the Civil War so too did the German Wehrmacht, in WWII, have the military genius of Erwin Rommel.
4-0 out of 5 stars An honorable enemy
Loved the movie. By chance, I got to meet his son who was mayor of Stuttgart. As with his father, an honorable and funny man with a self-depreciating humor who told a funny story of the mayor going to the zoo and getting sick in front of all the people watching him. Shades of his father. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars European racing fans shouldn't miss this one
Although the production and storyline are pure Hollywood 50's melodrama, it's definitely worth at least one viewing if you're an enthusiast of F1 and sports car racing in the 50's in Europe. The cars are all real - Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes et al - and the track action is genuine, although with a lot more rear-screen filler shots than you would see later in the 60s. Shooting was done at several classic circuits including Monaco, Nurburgring, the Mille Miglia, Spa, and a climactic race at the great old highway circuit at Reims, France. There are in-car shots, though not many, including a shot going through Eau Rouge at Spa that was duplicated by Frankenheimer in "Grand Prix" 11 years later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great period videography
Wonderful period racing film of the golden years of GT and Formula 1 racing. Kirk Douglas does a great job as a wreckless driver willing to do anything to succeed in motorsport. Only flaw is typical 50s romance interest. Please, please, create a DVD version.

The Racers is a great movie about motor racing in the 1950s era.Previous reviewers obviously haven't the knowledge of F1 motor racing of that period. It was a time when the giants dominated - Fangio, Moss, Ascari,Behra, Hawthorn, Collins, etc. on some of the best but dangerous circuitswhich, of course, would be condemned today. In this sense, DirectorHathaway depicts this scene in an accurate manner. What a cast, KirkDouglas lends that ambitious, athletic, vibrant persona to the role.BellaDarvi balances his agression with beauty as well as the cultural dimensionof ballet - also a risky venture.Supported by a cast of professionals -Roland the venturous rake, Cobb the epitome of Mercedes'Nebauer, Romero theexperienced veteran, Jurado the constant support of a motor racing partner. Each suit their particular roles brilliantly. This movie is a motor racingclassic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth watching, but not all true to the facts
Considering that this movie was made in 1939 and 1940 it is an amazing achievement. The special effects are quite impressive for the time: The birds-eye view of the wagons leaving Nauvoo with the temple in center screen, Crossing the Missouri frozen river, Nauvoo homes and temple burning in the background across the river, all of the wagons and oxen crossing plains, rivers, climbing mountains, etc. But especially the near-final scene of the locusts and the seagulls (which were mostly all real).
5-0 out of 5 stars go read the book of mormon
i am mormon and im sorry Jmark2001 but i feel i know more about my church and how it was formed than u do. we are righteous people. WE have high morals which are not seen in many other people theses days. I am not saying we are perfect or that everyone in the church is righeous but just that what we teach is morally right. if you knew history correctlly you would know these murders you speak of have never been proven to have been committed by mornmons, but it has been proven many many mormons {im sorry i should say lds(latter day saints) since that is what we are really called not mormons} were killed and yes it was "just because they were mormons" if u still dont believe me i invite all of you to go get a book of mormon which u can get form any member, one of the churchs, or a missionary for free many even the website but i am not sure (www.lds.org) and read it. you are also invited to go to the church of jesus christ of latter day staints and investigate the church.you might like it if not you will still get a since of the sprit in the church and a respect for the teachings

2-0 out of 5 stars Highly romanticized treatment
Well, you won't learn anything historical from this movie but it is entertaining Hollywood fare. The reason the Mormons were run out of nearly every town was not because they were "just Mormons" but because they made themselves a law unto themselves and did everything from counterfeit money to luring young, underaged girls into polygamous marriages (and a lifetime of slavery), to building up vast arsenals of weapons, and threatening everyone who disagreed with them (they later murdered a large number of people in the Mountain Meadows Massacre). Brigham Young ran Salt Lake City like a slave state and public whippings and jihad type murders were common. BTW, the film never mentions that Joseph Smith wanted his son to be the next president of the church, not Young. The real story of Salt Lake is a gruesome story of religious fanaticism (to exclude outsiders, the church even tried to invent its own alphabet - the Deseret alphabet), blood and violence, and undemocratic autocracy/theocracy. If you are looking for Tyrone Power, his appearance here is brief. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Flic
I first saw this movie when I was 10 and was completely captivated.Of course, I've seen this movie on tv multiple times over the years and I never fail to fall under the movie's spell.
4-0 out of 5 stars Strange movie invites unfairly harsh criticism
I had just seen Houseboat and really wanted to catch another Sophia flick. There is a criminal lack of her movies on DVD.With all the harsh criticisms of this movie, I bought it hesitantly only because I couldn't find many Sophia movies. There's a strange flavor to this movie, almost as if something about it was experimental. The story doesn't have a strong punch line by the end, but it does come to a logical conclusion that some may not find satisfying, but I did.1-0 out of 5 stars Somebody fell asleep at the wheel
It is often fun to overly critize films made in other decades that often reflect a different attitude to what worked for audiences then.My memory of this film as a teenager stands up better than my views upon seeing this DVD resurrection. For instance, as soon as I saw the name Kurt Krasner in the credits this time, I recalled that it was a common practice to use certain actors over and over again, even though they were badly miscast each and every time.Mr. Krasner is cast as a French policeman in Timbuktu. The actor was often cast in exotic, foreign sounding roles. The problem was that, in Legend of the Lost, he never attempted a French accent. In fact, he never changed his accent or his delivery in any of his films. Ever! The fight scenes between Brazzi and Wayne (there are far too many of them) are amaturish; one camera angle actually shows Brazzi throwing a punch that misses Wayne's jaw by a good 12 inches!Where was the director, Henry Hathaway, a seasoned vertan, when this happened? The soundtrack element used for this DVD transfer was very poor; it has a thin, tin-like quality.I've heard better in the various TV versions of this film. I find that to be true of many DVD's.I'm glad I rented this DVD rather than simply relying on my memory and buying it outright. That saved me some hard-earned money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Marilyn Monroe miscast murderer
This is not one of Marilyn's stronger acting roles. It came early in her career. She got better later.Marilyn was typecast as a sexpot, but she was also cast as a murderer, putting her boyfriend up to murder her husband.I don't know why. That is the fault of the writer.A writer is supposed to tell us why someone wants to have her husband murdered.Don't you think?Wouldn't that be a reasonable question? It would have been so easy for them to tell us that the husband is rich, at least, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven but Suspenseful
This movie is very much in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock. Most of the film is intriguing and suspenseful -- the finale will have you chewing on your fingernails -- but several scenes in the middle seem to only exist to show off the natural beauty of Niagara Falls.
5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Marilyn

If you like John Wayne but you've watched all the really good ones over and over there are a couple that you may not have seen that are worth taking a little trouble to get. This is one of them.I have no idea why it's not better known, probably because for some reason it hasn't been shown on tv three times a year for the last thirty years.I saw this as an adult about seven years ago and thought it was very, very good.

Veteran director Henry Hathaway applies his reputation for atmosphere and characterizations to make this more than just another formula movie. Dimitri Tiomkin's score lends just the right touch of melancholy often associated the circus. The ship disaster and the climatic fire sequences are truly spectacular. The film also features Rita Hayworth, Claudia Cardinale, Lloyd Nolan, John Smith and Richard Conte. This was originally filmed in single lens Cinerama Super Technirama 70.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really loved it !!!
I remember seeing circus world when I was a kid! I really enjoyed seeing it again. John Wayne is one of my all time favorites. He played in alot of westerns and military movies, it was great to see him play in somethingdifferent. If you have kids it's a great circus movie to show them and theywill remember it like I did. I highly recommend this movie to all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why McQueen Was A Star
Nevada Smith was made at the heights of McQueen's short, but terrific career. This film, along with Love With The Proper Stranger, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Cincinnati Kid and Bullitt, proves just why McQueen was a star.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good western and great entertainment
I love this movie for it's "revenge" story line, the good action, terrific acting, and beautiful scenery. I've actually been to many of the exact locations where the movie was filmed (Eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada range in CA), which gives me some nostalgic memories whenever I watch the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Choose to live over vengeance.
A favorite Steve McQueen vehicle, the sprawling western that stretches a bit too far. To me, this was just a hip take on the western melodramas of the 50's. In the early scenes, McQueen could have helped cedibility a great bit by letting another actor play himself as an adolescent. I believe this was an early Harold Robbins novel and toned down into the lengthy story. As McQueen's character moves across the land in hunt of those responsible for killing his family, there are wonderful life-changing moments. Brian Keith's gun lore and rapport with McQueen is worth the whole viewing. Another mini-scene within this adventure is with the under-utilized, Suzanne Pleshette, in the swamplands of Louisiana. Love nearly conquered, slowing the story until McQueen catches up with Karl Malden and his thugs. Malden is strong in his scenes, but there is too much horseplay at the end that makes the revenge a bit silly and wrong-headed, since any red-blooded man would have run off with Pleshette anyway. Right when you want McQueen to kill the thugs, there's some nonsense with a Mission priest that slows the finish even more. Cut-up and shown on TV, it was a tighter, more fluid story. Like Malden's "Left-handed Gun," the film is uneven and crawls in spots. We forgive this movie when the sum of the mini-scenes do not add up to a successful whole, for the fact that an editor did not do what was best. I don't even remember what revenge McQueen's character had at the end. 30 years later I watch the movie to see Pleshette, Keith and McQueen do what casts of 10 or so on TV sitcoms can never approach.Kudos for casting, thumbs down for pacing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Discipline and Punish
It's a little farfetched that Robert Cain Junior, when forced by dire circumstance to find an alias for himself, can't think of anything but "Johnny Apollo."Talk about vain!I suppose in today's hiphop world he'd call himself "Li'l Apollo."
5-0 out of 5 stars The fine line between good and evil
The compelling 1940 film noir "Johnny Apollo" is movie that effectively sullies the demarcation between honesty and criminality.A terrific cast help director Henry Hathaway create a worthy gangster based drama.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining film noir
A surprisingly good and very underrated film noir which should be released on dvd. It's about the story of a man struggling with his identity and trying to get along in the real world with a tarnished family name. After changing his name to Johnny Apollo, things begin to spiral out of control. Good gritty performances by Lloyd Nolan, who usually plays the good guy, and Tyrone Power. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching Just for Susan Tyrrell's Performance
I saw Shoot Out when it was first released and just watched it again a few days ago. Although the negative comments that have been posted are generally accurate, the film has several elements that make it worth watching. Imagine combining 'To Kill a Mockingbird' with 'One-Eyed Jacks' and you will have a pretty good idea of what this story is all about. Unfortunately Gregory Peck did not put Aticus Finch energy into the Clay Lomax character, and even though Dawn Lyn (Dodie from 'My Three Sons') is fine as the little girl-the idea just doesn't work. There is at least one story too many in this movie and it would take a great script to pull it together. But as someone has already mentioned this is not a great script and there are 1970's dialogue issues that periodically jar the viewer back to reality, making it impossible for this thing to ever really get going.
