5-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Jungle
This is a Classic Movie, with a great cast, Eleanor Parker plays her part so well,I just love her,as for Charlton Heston, his part as the arrogant plantation owner is stunning, you just have to hate him when he first meets his proxy bride, and then later you understand why,This is a real thriller,so nice to watch a movie where there is no swearing or blatant blood letting, and yet it keeps you on the edge of your seat till the climax

4-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Jungle (aka Lanigen's Ants)
Charleton Heston and Eleanor Parker star in this movie about love and army ants.I believe it was originally released as "Lanigen's Ants".Heston plays a wealthy land owner with very definite ideas of love and marriage.Eleanor Parker is his mail order bride who enlightens him to what love and marriage should really be.The army ants are there to wreak havoc with his hard earned dynasty and to threaten their blossoming relationship. As a Charleton Heston fan, I really enjoyed this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Forty square miles of agonising death!"
The Naked Jungle's reputation rests on its last couple of reels, when plantation owner Charlton Heston battles the Marabunta, the twenty-mile long, two-mile wide army of billions of soldier ants ("forty square miles of agonizing death!") heading straight for the empire he carved out of the jungle with his bare hands. Well, his and the local natives bare hands. Of course, you have to get through an hour of soap opera first as the arrogant and virginal Chuck ("They have a word for men who go to the native villages at night. No one ever used that word about me") is more than a tad miffed to discover that after shipping new furniture and a new piano out to the jungle that he's been sent a second-hand mail-order bride in Eleanor Parker, despite her admonitions that "If you knew anything about music, you'd know that a good piano always sounds better if it's been played!" But then you have to expect that sort of thing when you marry by proxy (we learn that William Conrad, who played the Heston role in the earlier radio version of the original story, stood in for Parker!). Still, at least Ranald Macdougal and blacklisted Ben Maddow have fun with the script with exchanges like "I've been trying not to irritate you." "I noticed that. I find it irritating." It would have been good to have less of the matrimonials and more of the Marabunta, but the picture is great fun for both the right and wrong reasons and I can't say I felt short-changed revisiting it.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT EXTRAS
**THIS IS ONLY FOR THE DVD**
5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the War of the War of the Worlds
Now that three more War of the Worlds movies (that I know of) have been released within the past few years, one with a really big budget and set in New York (you've probably seen that one) and two low budget movies set back in Britain in the 1890's, this is still the best War of the Worlds movie out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned Sci-Fi Movie At Its Best
I sound like an old man when I say that there are movies back in the day that are better than the slickest modern production, even when the movies outdate ME.Maybe because today's filmmakers are so much in love with CGI effects that they feel they can replace little, unimportant things like plot, storyline and character development. That's why I've steadfastly refused to see Spielberg's version of this classic; I don't want anything to tarnish my memory of what I consider, as a kid growing up and today, one of the best sci-fi films ever made.

Humphrey Bogart and Raymond Massey star in a unique film that shows whatconvoy duty was like for the Merchant Marine in World War II. When their tanker is torpedoed by a German U-boat, Bogart and Massey take command of a Liberty Ship, and their convoy must play cat and mouse with a German wolf pack. While clearly shown in a bad light, the Germans are not heavily demonized, which was unusual for a patriotic war film of the time (1943). Another unusual choice was having the Germans speaking only in their native language, with no subtitles. This realism helps carry any dated elements, especially when combined with the accurate depiction of convoy techniques and battle tactics (the footage was later used for actual training purposes). Even jaded viewers will be on pins and needles when the convoy is attacked, and they hear the repeated German command of "Torpedo... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sea Action
Fans of Bogart or war movies will definitely want to see this one. IMHO one of the best WWII movies made. Along with "Casablanca", "African Queen", "Caine Mutiny", and "Sahara", this was one of the all time great war movies that Bogart created a believeable character you enjoyed watching. The support cast round out the movie and add the the subplots that are needed to give an in depth look at the Merchant Marine. To few movies show groups of people, like the Merchant Marine, that were a large part of why we won wars. I salute them since they don't receive the recognition they deserve. We are quick to erect statues of fighting heroes, but not so quick to honor those that fought by supporting the troops with supplies, construction, first aid, and much more. If you enjoy this be sure catch John Wayne in "The Fighting Seabees". It amazes me that the rights owners of this wonderful movie have not put it on DVD. This will certainly sell as well as any classic John Wayne movie. I always wonder why so much junk is on DVD, but excellent movies like this are only on VHS or out of print (OOP). I love WWII movies and you need a variety to truly appreciate what happened. Movies like "Mrs. Miniver", "Three Came Home" and "Go for Broke" are not mainstream for everyone, but like this movie they give a better idea of the real people that made up not only our fighting forces but the civilian war effort as well. God bless the Merchant Marine. I know what you did has never been fully appreciated. I think movies like this help to make people get a glimmer of what really happened and how we all owe a debt to the Merchant Marines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate Tribute to a Deserving Group
There weren't a great deal of movies about the auxillary outfits that aided the war effort abroad in WWII.John Wayne's "The Fighting Seabees" comes to mind as well as a Martha Raye USO picture or two. However, "Action in the North Atlantic" qualifies as sort of the epic picture of the limited genre. It's about the Merchant Marines and it stars Humphrey Bogart in a somewhat subdued yet very effective role. There's a fair amount of naval action as well as a lot of shipmate camaradarie, and even a romantic interlude (don't worry, it's not on the ship). We get a sense that these men are preforming a vital task at a high risk to themselves.

Forget the simplistic plot to this B western; that is if you are a railfan--as I am.
1-0 out of 5 stars saturday matinee western
A very bad B movie unless you are a railroad enthusiast (which I am) , or a ten year old boy ( there is no kissing).Ends with a lesson in not taking the law into your own hands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clear Technicolor missing.
On the VHS they recorded it super long play using a small amount of tape. This ruined the beautiful Technicolor. Still worth buying for the price, or cheaper, unless they redo it another way. Sound was not ruined. Picture clear enough to watch, but the details, such as leaves blowing in the wind, and the overall brillance of technicolor do not show through like they should. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It had a lot of potential, but somehow flawed.
The inhabitants of planet Zanti have sent some of their exiles to Planet Earth, because they don't believe in executions. There has been a specific land allotted for the Zanti exiles to land, making sure that no one else can enter the area. However, when a couple who are on the run break through the gates and enter the area, the Zanti misfits are somehow let loose and go after the human race. It is now up to a group of men, secretly operating from a ghost town (and in communication with the other planet) to stop the aliens before they spread and destroy everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Before the Krites there were the Zantis.
Long before the Krites "Critters" (1986) [see my review], there was the much more serious Zantis. It is the mature of "Outer Limits" to point out the nature of humans. They do it quite convincingly in this episode.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best examples of SF on TV
Despite the absurdity of the bug-eyed giant ants with a semi-human face, this is one of the best episodes of science fiction on television. The authorities on the planet Zanti contact the Earth leadership, and the message is an ultimatum. Receive and intern a collection of Zanti exiles that are a danger to their society. Given no choice in the matter, the Earthlings prepare a ghost town in the southwestern United States called Morgue. The ship arrives and it is very small. Two human criminal malcontents, a man and a woman, break the quarantine area and encounter the ship. The man is killed and the woman is pursued. A historian consultant to the military forces controlling the area goes to the ship and rescues the woman. The creatures then attack the military forces controlling the town and after a battle, all of the Zanti exiles are killed.

Strap on your pantaloons and prepare to travel with Jim Hawkins andBlind Pew to one of the most famous fictional islands in history. Walt Disney's 1950 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece has held up extremely well, with action and characterizations that feel freshly minted (although it's unlikely that the Mouse of today would sanction the high level of booze flowing throughout the picture). Great fun, with nary a wasted frame and, in the character of Robert Newton's much-imitated Long John, one of cinema's most boisterously crowd-pleasing villains ever. (Proving that you can't keep a good--er, bad man down, Newton would return with director Byron Haskins for the enjoyable sequel, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Pirate Movie
While this is a Disney film, the experience is fast moving and true to the original story. The acting, particularly Robert Newton as "Long John Silver", is a bit over the top, but it just adds to the fun.Robert Newton is the architypal pirate and a great role model for September 19th's Talk Like A Pirate Day!

5-0 out of 5 stars There'll never be another!
This is THE immortal pirate story, in its incomparable filmic garb. No-one will ever outdo Newton in his incarnation of Long John; and virtually everything else in Stevenson's tale comes together perfectly. I put this down, first, to the incredible dialogue fashioned by Stevenson. Reading the book, the words he puts into the mouths of his varied characters are so vivid I can actually hear them in my mind's ear. The individual personalities are so strong that they leap from the page. The film does not let him down, even though it may have changed one or two elements in the story. Particularly good are the costumes, and the 18th century atmosphere generated by the settings: inn, seaport, ship and island. I feel sorry for anyone who cannot respond to this delightful creation. Sez I.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arrrrh!
Robert Newton is hands down the ultimate pirate. And I'm sure, if he were still alive, would have been offered a starring role in the Disney production of "Pirates of the Carribean".Johnny Depp is terrific as Jack Sparrow, just a little too swishy for my taste, but funny none the less. This movie holds up well even by todays ultra violence and CGI,plenty of swashbuckling swordplay and adventure to keep the kiddies interested.By the way a little historic note-pirates drank rum because the water on the ship was often rancid and undrinkable after so many months at sea. Yo, ho, ho! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sindbad Defeats Dismal Special Effects!
Here's one for the books. With wonderful character actors like Guy "Zorro" Williams, new-comer Heidi Bruhl, and the legendary Pedro Armendariz - who despite cancer, provided a stellar performance as the evil El Karim, even Abraham Sofaer's magician character can't pull this rabbit entirely out of the hat.The storyline is very good and the film score is memorable.

CAPTAIN SINDBAD IS GUY WILLIAMS AT HIS BEST!!!In between his roles as tv's ZORRO in the late 1950s and as Professor John Robinson on tv's LOST IN SPACE in the mid to late 1960s, Guy Williams took his family to Europe in 1961 when he went to make 3 movies, the third of which was 1963's CAPTAIN SINDBAD, made in Germany.1-0 out of 5 stars bad sinbad bad

5-0 out of 5 stars CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT
One thing that makes Controlled Experiment different is that it portrays a diffrent form of time travel. Instead of zipping into the future like Rod Taylor did in 1960 or Guy Pearce did in 2001, the two martians in this story manipulate time examing an event from several view points, also it would be a strange experience to be at say a car crash watching everything proceed in slow motion, this episode also gives you a chance to see Caroll O' Connor as somebody other than Archie Bunker

4-0 out of 5 stars Lt. Philip Gerard & Archie Bunker On Earth Murder

5-0 out of 5 stars A rousing old fashioned adventure movie
Lancaster gives a fine performance in this classic account of a soldier of fortune willing to risk his neck for profit, and yet, act with honor and courage.4-0 out of 5 stars Burt in All His Glory!
If you like Burt Lancaster, you gotta love this movie. It's even strangely politically correct for its time. One of the themes boils down to not messing around with indigenous cultures to satisfy the White Man's greed. Meanwhile, if you want to dispense with the anti-exploitation morality, just enjoy the most virile male lead in Hollywood history spreading his testosterone around the Fiji islands. Every Burt Lancaster film has a memorable scene that marks his territory forever in your mind. In this movie its the scene where is challenged by the native chief and fights him for domination of the island. His Majesty O'Keefe is a flawed hero, but a real man, no question. He learns from his mistakes, such as ruining the native economy while trying to do them a favor. It does a satisfying job poking holes in the White Man's Burden myth and is rousing entertainment. This isn't a rampant swashbuckler like Crimson Pirate, but if you like that movie, you'll probably enjoy this one also. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Requires some understanding
There's Midsummer Night's Dream and then there's Rabalais with his Pantagruel and Gargantua characters. The first story, despite its age, still communicates fairly directly and in a language many moderns can grasp and love (although some younger people might disagree, but for several hundred years no one had much trouble with Shakespeare!). The second story is outwardly of-its-time, can seem dated, mannered and awkward, works with oddball logic, and is a grind for those not willing to give it a chance. Rabalais is not "no-brainer" entertainment. Despite that, with a bit of effort people find the stories are wonderful and offer tremendous rewards. This George Pal film is somewhat like that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harlan Ellison's story of a super "Solider" from the future
Having crafted one of the very best episodse of "The Outer Limits" with "The Demon with the Glass Hand," Harlan Ellison comes up with another strong script with "Soldier," adapted from a short story. In fact, if you get the chance to read the 1957 short story, which is a rather crudely drawn anti-war polemic, then you will be even more impressed with the story's refinement in this script.Qarlo (Michael Ansara) is a human killing machine who is catapulted from the future to the "present" during a battle with an enemy (who is stuck in between time--for the time being...).Kagan (Lloyd Nolan), a language expert, is assigned to crack Qarlo's language.Kagan succeeds, at which point the story takes an interesting but strange turn, as Kagan brings the super soldier from the future home to meet the wife and kids. The scene does develop some very interesting aspects of Qarlo's personality and story, but it is rather unbelievable that the government would let a time traveler go home with a linguist for dinner.Still, "The Solider" is a very interesting time travel story and the performances by Nolan and especially Ansara goes a long way to make up for that one gapping hole in the script. It is on the strength of those performances, a common finding with episodes scripted by Ellison I should point out, that I decided to round up instead of down with this 4.5 star episode. The strange mix of violence and optimism actually makes the story work, at least for me.As everyone has mentioned, there are some strong similarities between "Solider" and "Terminator."So much so that Ellison won a suit against James Cameron (you know, that "Titanic" movie Cameron made was not an original story either).Actually, I think "Soldier" owes something to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come from Dickens's "A Christmas Carol.""Soldier," Episode 33 of "The Outer Limits," was directed by Gerd Oswald and first aired on September 19, 1964, which I believe makes it the first episode of the show's second season.

5-0 out of 5 stars Future Fighting Foes Freak Philly!
Great sci-fi, fascinating drama.4-0 out of 5 stars Dog, dog, dog ...
Most Outer Limits in my opinion cannot hold a candle to the majority of the Twilight Zones. This is a rarity. Featuring, what will be a Klingon on Star Trek we have some very good performances. If it weren't for the fact that the "Soldier" was brought home this ep. would be 5 stars ... the ep. falls apart when the kids come in contact with him. Although I have this on laserdisc, I would buy it in a heartbeat on dvd ... wink, wink, nudge, nudge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Weird, Strange Trip, Indeed!
After killing Andre, two women put his body into the trunk of their car.Traveling through the forest, they enter a house containing an old, blind man and Mr. Tone Hobart, who posseses a "time tilting" device.A device he uses to bring Andre back to life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series
Joseph Stefano's most lyrically poetic script is a sturm-und-drang classic. In some ways, it's a quintessential OL, and in others it's nothing like the rest of the series at all.5-0 out of 5 stars Cruel Blonde, Clocks and Wires
Alfred Hitchcock attempted to mold Vera Miles into his classic "cool blonde" such he had done with Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint and Tippi Hedren. However Miles screen persona seemed to lack glamour and radiance. She exuded more pragmatic and matronly qualities as a veneer hiding some darker side of sexuality. Rather than the "cool blonde" she seemed more the "cruel blonde" similar to her role in 1961's "Back Street." In "The Forms of Things Unknown" Vera Miles gives a tour de force in subdued sexual and sadistic manifestations. This episode seems like one of the most explicit ventures into erotica from 1960's television. A strange mixture of 60s chic and spooky Gothic Romanticism it is a highly stylized examination of human sexual behavior, fears and relationships. Stiletto heels, poisoned Martinis, drenching rains, crackling fireplaces, dark shadows, eerie music box tunes, webs of wires and lots of clocks, ticking clocks abound. Is David McCallum a mad scientist or just mad? I was at a science fiction meet in New York City over 20 years ago. Joseph Stefano was the featured speaker. He brought a 16-mm copy of this episode for viewing. Originally this was a pilot episode for a show he was trying to sell to ABC. This pilot was not for "The Outer Limits." It was for another show more in the horror genre. The episode Joseph Stefano showed the audience that day had a different ending. For "The Outer Limits" the ending was re-edited to give it a science fiction element. In the original McCallum was a time traveler only in his mind. For "The Outer Limits" version, well let's just say that you decide. I just touched the tip of the iceberg. There is much more to this episode than I can fathom. It remains my favorite episode. New Haven born composer Dominic Frontiere's title theme from the first season still remains a great piece of classic musical innovation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Episode 8: The Human Factor
The eighth episode in the series, "The Human Factor" is basically an exchange of identities, one good and one bad, and how the bad takes advantage of it. This is not one of the best episodes, but it is better than a few.
1-0 out of 5 stars The Human Factor = 1 star out of 5
God, this episode was awful.Considering it had some nice plot twists (and some of the best in the series) and that it still stunk out the joint tells volumes on how bad The Human Factor was to watch. The episode invloves: a scientist, his love?, a pyscho soldier, a bunch of inept officers, awful/silly dialogue, a head-scratching plot, a nuclear bomb, officiers that arm nuclear bombs to show another person how it works(?), etc etc etc. This is one of the worse Outer Limits episodes.4-0 out of 5 stars This plot is best unspoiled
After seeing a long string of weaker Outer Limits episodes (The Probe, Keeper of the Purple Twilight etc.), this one just about blew my mind. Good Outer Limits is SO GOOD. I wasn't thinking of the strenghts / weaknesses of this one while watching, i was just sucked in completely.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lawrance M. Bernabo needs to be corrected on the origin of this outer limits screenplay.
Great old television science fiction. However, I need to correct Mr. Bernabo on the source of this OUTER LIMITS screenplay.Otto Binder wrote the story used in this DVD in an issue of AMAZING STORIES magazine in 1939.It was entitled "I, Robot" a full eleven years before Isaac Azimov's collection was published. The publisher "appropriated" the title above Azimov's objections. While crediting Isaac Azimov's collection, the recent Will Smith film also used the title and elements of Binder's story without giving any reference or credit. The Binder estate ought to hire a lawyer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stupid is as Stupid does
I felt I had to say something since the last reveiwer just made a complete ass out of himself. Yes Lenard nimoy did play the lawyer IN THE REMAKE that is not being discussed here. In this one he played the reporter. So looks like someone else needs to straighten their facts before posting.

5-0 out of 5 stars did you watch the show?
if you watched the show you made a mistake. Leonard Nimoy was the lawyer that represented adam not a reporter. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Episode 1: The Galaxy Being
This is the first episode and a great start to the series!
5-0 out of 5 stars Debut Episode Of This Sci-Fi Series Is Still The Best!
This VHS video contains the premiere episode of the 1960s science-fiction TV series, "The Outer Limits".Cliff Robertson stars in "The Galaxy Being", a story of energy gone haywire.4-0 out of 5 stars 'Scared the[stuff] out of a then ten-year-old!
When I saw the pilot episode of the classic sci-fi anthology, I was frightened beyond belief. The mouthless, glowing alien that the unwitting radio announcer "yanks" from outer space was enough to make a kid sleep with a nightlight on.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Episode 10: Nightmare
The tenth in the series, which is based on a `War Of The Worlds' theme, this episode was one of the most interesting episodes of The Outer Limits that I have seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surreal "Nigthmare" !
I agree with the other reviewers that this episode was one of the best from the original series. I saw this as a kid when it first aired and again in a re-run. "Nightmare" has stuck in my mind for 40 years now.3-0 out of 5 stars Nightmare = 3.5 stars out of 5
One of the better episodes of the series and maybe, just maybe, the most memorable. The whole episode deals with the interrogation of human soldiers by am alien army called Ebonites. The sheer starkness of the set and coldness of everything is very effective, giving it a dreamlike quality. The prisoners are interrogated one-by-one because they have information that the Ebonites (and others) need. When the plans are exposed to the Ebonites about the next wave of soldiers arriving, the 5 remaining members of the party believe they have been betrayed by one of their own.I don't want to give anyway if you have not watched the episode, so I will seal my lips now.Read more
