5-0 out of 5 stars Not the Book, but Worth seeing
This DVD includes a never-before-seen interview with author of the book Madeleine L'Engle and is worth the entire cost of the DVD for this reason alone.

I can't believe BLT productions had anything to do with this film which is unwatchably bad. Now I see why Roy Disney made a website called Save Disney. Oddly enough, Disney did a great job on a lesser-known L'Engle book, Ring of Endless Light, which will hopefully make it out on DVD.

The cast really seemed fluid, I loved the wit, the message and wish there were more quality movies like this today. The anti-use of swearing is a really great feature as well. The plot was terrific. I am surprised that I didnt find it until quite a while after it was released.Wonderful movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars A flood of emotion
This is one of the best of Hallmark. It's a story of a convict in the 20's in a Mississippi prison. The rains came and he was sent on a mission.Every time you thought things were going to get better, they got worse. This is a tale of two strangerscaught in a situation beyond their control, and find the trust and faith that had been lost in their lives. Arliss Howard and Jeanne Tripplehorn were excellent and very true in their portrayals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough and Sensitive a Great story meanders Ole Miss.
What do you get when you have a great story terrific acting and a director who nows about pacing .Well you get a great movie that will stay with you for years. Beatifully filmed this movie has everything . It is fable like and the pace is similar to listening to a great folk tune or folk story . It is just right. It really captures your attention and subsequently you care for these characters. Arliss Howards strong quiet lead and country looks pull this film above chick-flic status.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performances/Great story!
Arliss Howard and Jean Tripplehorn, two of America's greatest, but little known acting talents shine brightly in this quiet, intelligent film. It gets its Southern setting just right, with plenty of story, suspense andheart. Best of all is Howard's nearly wordless protrayal of a convict whohas a profound sense of honor and loyalty. For fans of Les Miserables, CoolHand Luke, Horton Foote and Shawshank Redemption. The best HHF producedyet! Highly recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Effort with a Great Western Actor
Just who are our Old West heroes?Should they be vicious thugs like Jesse James?Lazy (albeit likeable) bums like Butch and Sundance? The outlaws get all the press but it was the folks like Tilghman who deserve our admiration. In recent years, some of the lawmen have gotten some credit; Wyatt Earp may or may not deserve admiration, but Tilghman certainly does. This film treats the last days of the last of the old west lawmen, a man whom Masterson called "the best of us all".Sam Elliott does a marvelous job of making Tilghman real; the movie, though, needs some work.I would love to see Hollywood apply some real muscle to the story of the Old West lawman, because Tilghman would be the best and only choice for a subject.Bring in Sam Elliott to reprise the role and let him really stretch his legs in this role. 4-0 out of 5 stars Straight from the Dickson Plantation I write this...
Talk about living history...I've read all the books about this family and I live in the house David built for his daughter Amanda in 1871.I can look out my window and see the spot where David's childhood home once stood.I even met Jennifer Beals when she came to see the house and the land.Although not filmed here, the movie was great - although it did take a little dramatic license. It was known Julia held a very high position of authority, very rare for a woman, much less a black slave woman. It was also apparent David felt much love for his bi-racial daughter Amanda.Only two people know the truth of nature of the relationship between David and Julia that brought Amanda into existence, if indeed David was the father.(He was married for several years and never produced children.)If you're into historical drama, especially dealing with the relationship between slave and slave owner, watch it.If you like the movie, read Woman of Color, Daughter of Privilege by Kent Anderson Leslie for an even more intriguing tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Quiet Bombshell
I can't say enough good things about this low-budget gem.Fine acting and a gripping plot make this a must see. Based on the story of a mulatto girl who returns to her father's plantation to take back what is hers, this tale uncovers many an ugly skeleton in America's closet. It shows better than any other drama(Amistad included!), the refined cruelties of slavery and the obnoxious ideology behind it.The girl, Miss Dickson, returns to a post-civil war Georgia beseiged with a bigotry almost as appalling as slavery itself.Denied the land and house rightfully left to her by her slave-master father(superbly portrayed by the stellar Sam Waterson), she enlists the help of a noble lawyer, who dares to serve justice and not Jim Crow.Together, they trudge towards a final victory which takes Miss Dickson back through the ravages and diappointments of time, where ever since childhood, her 'blackness' and mother's identity have been kept in secret. The film does an amazing job of mixing the past with the present, making them appear indivisible. Resented and rejected by the other slaves, she tries to 'pass' into the white world, which ultimately scorns her, once her 'secret' is divulged. The Miss must confront who she is and that means acknowledging and accepting her slave mother. These scenes between mother and daughter are particuarly poignant and moving. The film shows just how much degradation you had to endure if you were a black woman in19th century America.Perhaps the best performance of the film was that of Julia, Miss Dickson's mother. The dignity of her character still managed to shine, despite all the endless humiliation she had to suffer. Unlike most slave-period dramas, A House dares to show how whites were also prisoners of their own system of prejudice, one that forbid interracial love. But not rape. The film artfully sculpts the amibiguous relationship between Waterson's character, David Dickson, slave owner, and that of Julia.Despite the brutal rape, the nature of his feelings for Julia remain a series of speculation....did he really feel something for her.....shame at what he had done.....affection....respect..... dependence.....we are never quite sure.....the film keeps you guessing. Like a good film should. If you want a great piece of drama that tells the ignominous story of American racism as it really was and unfortunatley, still is, then A House Divided is the one to watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars A House Divided
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.I loved the candor with which the film portrays the characters and struggles they endured in the face of unflinching opposition.Although, these events took place during very racially charged times Miss Julia, Miss Dickson and Mr. Daly quitely and courageously pursued and obtained justice.I was pleasantly and refreshingly surprised to get to the end of the movie and find it based on a true story! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cute movie!
I think this is one of the most adorable movies I have ever seen. I think as far as made for tv movies go this one is excellent! The actors were all great! Also what makes it such a good movie is that is a true story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Hallmark Hall of Famer, but Still Entertaining
The two leads in this (apparently true) tale of love, courage and sacrifice in war are very attractive and well suited to their roles.I had never heard of either Callum Blue or Barbora Bobulova but I would like to see more of them. The story of how an Italian village (or many of its inhabitants) hid a young English commando from the German occupiers is inspiring, if a little too neat in this presentation, and the photography of the surrounding Italian mountains and the village itself is lovely.I found it interesting that here, as in"Capt. Corelli's Mandolin", a recent movie,is presented the incongruous situation in which the Italians, part of Hitler's Axis presumably, are only too happy to lay down their arms at the first news of Allied successes and make common cause with the Americans or English, as the case may be, despite the presence of the Germans. At any rate, this makes for an interesting love story between the English commando and the young Italian girl whose family first befriends him.Worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best movie....
This movie, in my opinion, was better than Pearl Harbor. I loved it!The ending is just.... so perfect, you'll cry. I can't say enough how much I loved this movie. If you liked Pearl Harbor (and even if you didn't!), you can't go wrong with this one! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships?
This version is fairly well-made; my only complaint was the casting of Helen. Obviously when casting such a role, one cannot please everyone. But I found it impossible to believe this woman was the most beautiful woman in the world, whose appearance so bewitched and fascinated men that they would kill and die for her. The actress cast as Helen is certainly pretty, but in a rather waif-like and generic "Vogue" way that is certainly not representative of classical ideals of beauty in any way. Helen should not be merely "pretty", like most modern magazine models are, but her beauty should be more unusual and striking. For a perfect example of this kind of beauty, I refer you to Leelee Sobieski as the nymph Deianeira in the 2005 TV version of "Hercules". Now that's a Helen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helen of Troy
Personally, I found the movie entertaining and did get more than a few chuckles out of the present handling nad mischaracterization of the Greek story. It has little or nothing to do with the epic Helen or the Illiad, and Oddessey which could cause the movie to fall flat on its face for lack of any real connection to the actual story. The very worst part to me is the mishandling and misrepresentaion of Achilles and the way he lived, fought, and died. The portrayed rape of Helen by Agamemnon was a serious deviation from the epic poetry and other than groos and unnecessary sensationalizing of a terrible event which is entirely missing from the literature.Helen did accompany Menelaus back to Sparta and they seem to have lived out their lives there.I would recommend this movie for entertainment purposes only with the hope that it might stimulate others into reading Homer, about Crete, About Mycenae, and about Greek in particular.I will not criticize tha actors in this drama although I think they were underprepared for the role but did the best they could with what they had been given. If it stimulates the viewer's interest into exploring the other fine books and DVD's that are currently coming out, the movie will have far exceeded its potential.I would strongly recommend Homer's Illiad/Oddessey, Paul Cartledge's The Spartans, Anything by Bettand Hughes, a historian extrordinaire and a story teller of the very highest quality. Her books and DVD's will touch you heart and soul.In addition, Tom Holland's Persion Fire is an exceptional read which literally makes history come alive as does Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire which is a historical narrative of the Battle for the Gates of Thermoplyae.Having experienced the blood, sweat, tears, fear, and terror of hand to hand combat, I can attest the his book will make you feel like you were there and you understood, and will understand, why men can dedicate themselves to a country and a cause much bigger than themselves. All soldiers fear being hurt or killed on a humbug (events bordering on incompentence) but are prepared to die honorably if the cause is just. His book is the closest you will ever come to sharing the frontline without actually getting out there and doing it.Kudos to him.I love the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Helen" not so bad
I actually enjoyed this TV version of the fated story...it wasnot the epic that "Troy" is, with the multi-million dollar scenery and costumes--not to mention Brad Pitt--but the storyline was much more Homer...plus I feel that the actors were more into their characters and not so "Hollywood."(It's kind of hard to see Brad Pitt as Achilles, b/c he's Brad Pitt, even if he is a great actor)...I saw this on TV and fell in love with it...I really liked the way Agamemnon and Helen's relationship was portrayed, even if it isn't accurate...Helen is portrayed as much more childlike and naive, but she was only a child, a beautiful, pawned child...Agamemnon is seen as teetering on the brink of madness throughout the entire movie, as he probably was...the fight scenes were nothing to write home about and neither were several of the performances, but they had Cassandra and her foretellings, Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter in order to sail for Troy, Agamemnon being killed by Clytemnestra (even if it was in Troy), the pre-story of Paris and the fate of Troy, Pollux (but no Castor), and the fact that Helen was a Spartan (not through marriage to Menalaus but by birth--Menelaus inherited Sparta by marrying Helen)...in all, this movie is worth watching, if only for another take on the classic story. ...
