5-0 out of 5 stars Tennessee at his best!
I originally saw this production on Broadway. The taped performances are astonishingly good.Kevin Anderson is outstanding, and Redgrave cannot be topped. The ending is as Tennessee wanted it.While I will always like and have a copy of the movie version with Brando (he is excellent in his own style) this is clearly the more authentic production.Worth every cent of the price if you are a true fan of Tennessee Williams. This play is rarely produced, so get it on tape while you can.Superb!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking acting...
I watched this video after becoming interested in the actor, Kevin Anderson, a Steppenwolf ensemble member. You may know him as Julia Robert's gentle boyfriend, Ben, in "Sleeping with the Enemy".Well, WOW - he is HOT STUFF as Val in this adaptation.Truly exeptional acting from the *entire* cast.He also sings (gorgeous voice) and taught himself the guitar for this role.He starred in the London production of "Sunset Boulevard" with Patti LuPone.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Cussing in a Bible Movie
Loved some of the other titles by the same company but we were extremely disappointed to hear Esau cussing 3 different times in the movie! We easily could have understood his anger without the profanity. Some creative liberties were taken as well, but they didn't harm the Biblical account too harshly.A few scenes weren't how the Bible depicted it but no doctine was damaged by the changes presented. It was basically the language. The wrestling scene was poorly done and Esau's reaction to Jacob's return wasn't presented 100% Biblical but no harm there. The best feature was the representation of the family dinamics between the sons and their parents... especially Jacob's actions at the coersion of his mother, but the language prevents me from sharing it freely with my children or other church members.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jacob
If not for being the story of a servant of God, I would have given this film a much lower rating. Although I love Matthew Modine as an actor, I feel that the character Jacob was casted poorly. I am ashamed to say that his was perhaps the best casted character in the film. The sets were poorly constructed and the acting left something to be desired. I felt that this telling of the story of Jacob was hastily done and the key events held none of the profound quality that they should have. Many of the choices the director made in depicting certain scenes were almost so weak that it made me feel that there was nothing significantly special about Jacob. If I hadn't already read and was familiar with the story of Jacob, my watching of this film would have left me uninterested in learning more about the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible Collection (Jacob)
I am pretty pleased with the product.I always have fears about buying used or second hand dvd's but so far I have no regrets. It was still in great condition and no skips or scratches on the dvd.It was a quality buy.....for a good price.. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This 1968 Royal Shakespeare Company film version of the Bard's comedy is a lost cause. Directed by Peter Hall, the effort is choppy and distracting, with lines intentionally rushed and natural exteriors often overwhelming any focus on characters or story turns. The cast of outstanding names may reel one in, but there is nothing whole cloth about this project, leaving one mostly to marvel at the way Diana Rigg, Ian Holm, Judi Dench (in scanty costume), and Helen Mirren looked three decades ago. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ever Notice How Some Couples Look Alike?
In this late 1960s production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", we are presented with Shakespeare for the Hippie Generation, complete with barely-clothed flower-children fairies in bad paint, courtesy of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well, it IS about dreams, isn't it???
The text is about the dislocation of dreams and how we attempt to make sense of them, impose order on their unruliness -- both while we are in the middle of them and after they are thought to be over.It seems to apply to dreams dreamed while awake as well as those when one sleeps--the dreams of youthful love, the dreams of a parent for their child's future, the dreams of ambition on stage or the dreams of a ruler for peaceful resolution. The cutting and the imagery strike me as totally appropriate--including an overcast day, a night full of lights, and lovers covered in muck so as to be completely indistinguishable to us as well as each other. It is a delightful interpretation done by a cast that deserves all the knighthoods they've later earned--and more. The two Sir Ians are a hoot, it's a treat to watch Mirren and Rigg trade insults, and Dame Judi is a very sexy lady in green paint.Really.See it and decide for yourself.

3-0 out of 5 stars DOUBLE TALK
NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS is what is commonly referred to as an "erotic thriller", although it's eroticism is skimpy and the thrills don't come too often.Rebecca DeMornay (Risky Business, Trip to Bountiful) plays a repressed psychiatrist who is evaluating alleged serial killer Harry Dean Stanton to see if he should stand trial for his accused crimes.Stanton claims he is a multiple personality disorder victim and therefore can plead innocent due to insanity.DeMornay has a chance encounter with sexy Antonio Banderas and starts into a relationship with him. This alienates her best friend Dennis Miller who has been carrying a torch for DeMornay for some time.DeMornay starts receiving strange things in her mail:dead flowers, her dead cat, etc., etc., and soon it seems DeMornay may be the victim herself of a dangerous stalker. Is it Banderas? Miller? or perhaps even her estranged father (Len Cariou).Once all the secrets are peeled away, things aren't quite what they seem. While definitely not in the league of truly suspenseful films, NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS offers a sharp performance from DeMornay and Cariou particularly, and Banderas is effectively smoldering.Astute viewers, however, will see the end coming a mile away.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are you an Antonio fan?
If you like Antonio Banderas, this is a great movie for you!He is wonderfully sexual in this movie, and the one scene that stands out is right after Rebecca returns to his apartment and slaps him....it had me so...well, lets just say it was really good!If you can watch a movie for its entertainment value, and not pick it apart for its cinematic quality and reality quirks, then you will enjoy this movie. It does have a plot, and a good one, and the ending is a little bit of a let down, but other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.Antonio is at one of his sexiest in this movie! He had me captivated the whole time!Watch for that particular scene, you wont be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good drama
I really liked the plot and directing and acting in this movie.I thought this was one of Ms.DeMornay's greatist dramatic roles I've seen her in.No corny bimbo performance here, great dramatic acting combined with good soundtrack and storyline! It has mystery, intrigue, romance, and spice! I'll even use a word I don't usually use and say the "lovescene" playing in the snow and flashing back and forth was the best I've ever scene in a movie! Ms.DeMornay is underrated and all the nude scenes I've seen of her are classy and in good taste, unlike other actresses!I'd prefer her to keep her clothes on myself because of all the morons out there who only get off onTV nudity because no real women wants anything to do with them! Again she's a great actress! Keep making movies Rebecca, I'll watch them even if on a viewfinder!Your the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comedy with some culture and good singing
This opera is a comedy set in an english village in the early 1900's.The basic story is that the village notables decide that none of the village girls are good enough in reputation to elect a festival queen so they choose Albert Herring, the shy village green-grocer who is firmly under his mother's rule to be the festival King .In the subsequent events, Albert appears at the festival, collects his prize money and disappears, much lamented by all.He reappears at the end having spent some of his prize at nearby pubs.Clearly, he is transformed by the experience and takes charge of his own life in a happy ending.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Only serviceable....
Aside from a so-so cast, McLaughlin a stand-out as being unable to the task of Violetta, there is some really tasteless staging. Yes, the set is traditionally opulent, even fussy, but I do not need spread legs (even seen from the rear), nor a pair of unattractive breasts bouncing about. However, since this is about singing, aside from the inadequate McLaughlin is an attractive Alfredo sung by Walter MacNeil with an equally attractive but unexciting voice and the same may be said for Brent Ellis' Germont. This is not a TERRIBLE performance, but one I'll never watch again except to demonstrate to someone how Traviata should not be done. As for conductor Bernard Haitink, despite his credetials, which are considerable, if he's ever been considered a notable Verdian, I stand to be corrected.

4-0 out of 5 stars VG Picture-No Subtitles
I had the old VHS Version of this Glyndenbourne performance. compare to that the picture quality of the Dvd is a huge improvement. However the VHS Version had English subtitles; the DVD does not. In these days of everything in Opera having subtitles it seems very strange thatthis DVD does not. Maybe Image would have to pay extra. I do not see in the Opera listings in Amazon any consistent listing for subtitles. For me I would not want to have this if without subtitles so I seek some way of getting a refund. I do not want DVD with no subtitles ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a view from the edge
In this age of brain dead Hollywood movie domination, Peter Hall's Delinquent comes like a refreshing voice from the gritty edge of American suburbia. This is not a happy film but it is an honest one. Full marks.

4-0 out of 5 stars unpredictable, original and highly intelligent
Peter Hall's Delinquent is one of the best indie flicks I've seen in recent years, a refreshingly original yet not self-indulgent debut. The soundtrack rocked, too. Just when you think you know what's going to happen, Hall pulls the tablecloth out from under you. This filmmaker definitely has a sardonic vision (check out the ending) but he is also capable of tenderness to his characters. I hope he is working on a new one, wherever he is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Teen Angst for All Ages
Delinquent is a dreamy, suspenseful drama about Tim, a teenager trapped in a mobile home in the sticks with his alcoholic, donut-eating (one of the films only clichs) cop dad and the memory of his mother, whose body he recently found after she committed suicide. He finds a vacant summer home thatmakes the perfect hide out and escape as he uses his hungry imagination to live vicariously through the belongings of an absent teenage girl and her family.
