5-0 out of 5 stars A TRULY WONDERFUL FANTASY
Here Comes Mr. Jordan is a delightful 1941 fantasy film that would later be remade with Warren Beatty (although not nearly as good) as Heaven Can Wait. Robert Montgomery, father of Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched fame, plays boxer Joe Pendleton, who is on the verge of fighting for the title. Joe is plucked out of his airplane just before it crashes by an inexperienced angel played by Edward Everett Horton who wanted to save him the pain of the crash. The Angel's Boss Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) finds out that Joe isn't supposed to die for another 50 years and orders the over-eager Angel 7013 to put Joe back in his body. Unfortunately, Joe's body has been cremated by his boxing manager.
5-0 out of 5 stars This film needs to be more accessible
Here Comes Mr Jordan is an exquisitly feel good film. With great acting and an wonderful storey. In this day and age where VHS is disappearing faster than artic ice it surely cannot be beyond somebodies wit to produce it on DVD and make this and other of its ilk more accessible. I personally do not have a video recorder anymore but love films like this and would buy them in DVD format. So come on somebody Mr Jordan is Waiting.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Your body . . . worth chemically 32 cents."
Most movies at least make an attempt to develop realistic plots; this one is content with just the opposite - and to good effect. A boxer (played by Robert Montogomery) dies in a plane crash, only there's been a mixup in Heaven: he wasn't supposed to die for another 50 years. When the "boss" Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) tries to put him back into his old body, it's too late: he's been cremated. So he finds another body, actually two - the first, a very rich man, and then, when that doesn't work out too well, another boxer.

Shirley Temple's superstardom in the 1930s was associated with Twentieth Century Fox, but before Fox locked her down she made two films for Paramount. It was 1934, her breakthrough year, and these pictures are not quite yet the showcase vehicles Fox would assemble for their pint-sized meal ticket. In Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Shirley Temple movie of all
Actually, I watched this movie because I was so fascinated by Dorothy Dell, who starred as "Bangles Carson," a tough gambler's girlfriend and nightclub singer. It is hard to believe that Dell was only nineteen years old when she made this film; she died two weeks after the film's release in a horrific nighttime car accident. But she looks and acts much, much older...she was beautiful, talented, and had an extremely promising future.
4-0 out of 5 stars Too Cute !!!!
This is a great movie for all Shirley Temple fans .Shirley plays a curly topped orphan who starts out as a sweet little girl who loves fairies and King Arthur and turns into a little mug and says things like "lay off me" and "that would be somethin'."The only thing that would keep you from buying this movie is Shirley does not tap dance or do much singing in the movie. The only song she does is " Son of a Gun." Still she is very cute in this movie and it shows one of her earlier roles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor Little Rich Girl
This movie is the type of movie that children should be watching today. It had some educational back ground in it.Where Shirley was presued by a man and wanting her to go with him to buy candy. If the parents are watching this movie with the children they can point out what was wrong when she started to go with him.Other than that the movie was fun to watch and a delight to see a movie without swearing. As in all of her movies she can light up your day and at the same time make you cry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great!
The Toast of New York is an interesting and kind of bizarre movie that I would say is good but not great and is not Cary's best. It is one of Cary Grant's first movies though he is not the main star of the movie, it is actually Edward Arnold's character that the movie is about and the character he plays is a selfish and greedy egomaniac. A real meanie! The movie is a semifactual biography of post Cival war era Wall Street wheeler dealer James Fisk who is played by Edward Arnold and Cary Grant plays his friend and employee and the movie also stars Jack Oakie and Frances Farmer.

3-0 out of 5 stars An odd entertainment, but oddly entertaining
'The Toast of New York' is definitely an odd item - a huge budget biopic about 19th century fraudster Jim Fiske and his battles with Daniel Drew and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Edward Arnold is the right man for the role, easily overshadowing second billed Cary Grant with his force of personality, but it's hard to root for a `hero' whose aim is to bankrupt America. What next, George Soros, the Musical? It's never less than watchable but while Billy Wilder and Izzy Diamond could have turned this into a blistering black comedy, it's beyond the writers to make it work as a rags-to-riches-to-rags drama. It does have one rather beautiful song, 'The First Time I Saw You' that even manages to survive Frances Farmer's flat foghorn drone delivery. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars so so
Ray Milland and Loretta Young try their best to make this movie work. But even their effort can't hold this together. Milland plays a doctor who is mistaken to be feminist writer's new husband (Loretta Young). In order to raise both of their careers, they fake marriage. 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!
The well written comedies of the forties and fifties have yet to be equaled! This particular comedy is the quintessential romantic comedy of the 1940s.Loretta Young and Ray Milland match each other wit for wit and jab for jab. This film will keep you laughing constantly. An all-star cast including Reginald Gardiner (My Favorite Wife) and Edmund Gwenn (Miracle on 34th Street).

5-0 out of 5 stars hilarious
The Doctor Takes a Wife is fantastic!Right up there with The Farmer's Daughter, also starring Loretta Young. Not quite as sweet, maybe, but definately funnier. The one-liners are hilarious.I watched it with fourother people, and we all loved it.A must-see! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Melvyn Douglas Shines in a Crawford Comedy
"They All Kissed the Bride" (1941) is a noteworthy film as first, being a comedy from Joan Crawford, and second, as the film Carole Lombard was scheduled to do at the time of her death.
4-0 out of 5 stars Joan Crawford Goes on "Loan Out" With Pleasing Comic Results
"They All Kissed The Bride", marks a slight variation in Joan Crawford's early 1940's movie career and being a Columbia release has a different feel to it than most of Joan's MGM features at this time, despite the presence of frequent costar Melvyn Douglas as the male lead. Originally set as a starring vehicle for Carole Lombard who was due to start this film upon her return from a War Bond selling tour, the film's production schedule was thrown into disarray by Lombard's tragic death in a plane crash on the return leg of her tour. At very short notice and as a homage to Miss Lombard, Joan Crawford not only stepped into the lead role but very generously donated her entire salary to wartime charities. When her agent still tried to collect his 10% fee for her services however Joan fired him on the spot!Despite starting off as a hard nosed, no nonsense businesswoman in the beginning this role reveals a delightfully comic and carefree Joan Crawford in the later stages that comes as a pleasant surprise after all her strongly dramatic work as one of the Queens of MGM soap operas for over a decade.3-0 out of 5 stars NOT A BAD CRAWFORD COMEDY.
Margaret J. Drew, known as M.J. by her intimidated employees, has taken over command of the vast Drew financial empire from her late father. When reporter Michael Holmes begins to publish exposes about Drew's tyrannical employment practices, the imperious M.J. demands that he be investigated. A pretty enjoyable film considering its rather contrived storyline, it nevertheless should please the mulititude of fans who still see in Crawford something I don't personally - generally speaking. The film was originally to have starred Carole Lombard, but she was tragically killed in a airplane crash after a highly successful War Bond drive. The script was re-written to suit Joan of Crawford. To her credit, Joanie donated her entire salary for this film to various charities in memory of the much-loved Lombard. As trivia footnotes, cinematographer used a special new "lavender lighting" technique which was used as an experiment in order to enhance the brilliance of Crawford's eyes (!) The film's ending credits acknowledge thusly: "Miss Joan Crawford appears through the courtesy of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer". The working title of the film was HE KISSED THE BRIDE & a deleted piece of dialogue ran: "When I want a sneak, I'll hire the best and get a Jap!"...Definitely politically incorrect by today's standards! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rita is really Beautiful inthis movie but the movie is so so
If you are a Rita fan this is a must see for you.The camera loves her, thats the treat here. The movie and songs aren't that good, the story is really empty and not interesting except for Rita. What a real Goddess she will always be to me!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Goddess Steps Down To Earth
After the success of "Gilda", Columbia put their superstar Rita Hayworth in this musical remake of "Here Comes Mr. Jordan".It did well at the box office, although in later years it has been panned by many as silly, far-fetched fare. I personally don't have a problem with it - it's not on par with Rita's earlier musicals, but it is very entertaining. The color is lush, and Hayworth is breathtakingly beautiful, and certainly suited to play the goddess of music and dance, Terpsichore (her singing voice is again dubbed by Anita Ellis), and Larry Parks is adorable as the young Broadway producer who wants so desperately to succeed.George Macready, who played Hayworth's evil spouse in "Gilda" again appears here in a similar role (with comedic undertones) - his office even seems to be the same as in the earlier film. It's also fun to see William Frawley in a small but memorable role.
5-0 out of 5 stars Down to Eart1947
Its heaven on earth in this delightful musical comedy sequel to enormously successful " Here Comes Mr. Jordan 1941" . Rita Heyworth (1918-1987) plays incredibly angelicmuse , inceensed at the notion that a Broadway musical is going to portray her as a modern living sexpot . She sets off forEarth to set the record straight and the results are a "mousing" . in 1946 , Columbia knew it had all the makings of a blockbuster by reworkng the "Here Comes Mr.Jordan" theme along with teaming up some of the original cast members with Hollywood brightest star, Rita Heyworth. The proscts might have been too promising , as they enabled Hayworth?s agent at the William Morris Agency to renegotiate her already lucrative studio contract .in DOWN TO EARTH , Rita Heyworth?s talent are absolutly show-stopping and with the realese of this film , its easy to see why she earned the reputation as Silver screen?s one and only love goddes . Do you need a better recommendation ! . Super ultra-resolution transfer quality pictures . Recommended ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful,innocent movie
This movie always makes me smile.Such nostalgia with the technicolor, shiny cars, women in dresses and men in suits.Lucy is one of my favorite comedians and she does a great job.I've never been a fan of Desi(sorry)but James Mason is absolutely dreamy.Forever Darling is bottom line just a fun movie to watch.

1-0 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR LUCY/DESI DIEHARDS!
This is a terrible movie. When it came out in 1956 it was a box office bomb even though both stars were at the height of their powers. Time had only added to it's mediocrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF A WONDERFUL PAIR OF MOVIES
I have seen both Forever, Darling and The Long, Long Trailer (in that order) and would be hard-pressed to say which one I liked most. I love the title song sung by the Ames Brothers, but to hear Desi sing it in Spanish was a delight. Other reviewers have mentioned James Mason (I loved him as Dr. Watson in Murder By Decree) but don't forget the actress who played Thurston Powell III's wife on Gilligan's Island, Natalie Schafer, playing Susan's high-society mother!! All the comedy scenes will leave you breathless (I loved it her slave-and-master routine when she and her husband's first jaunt in the rowboat ended (with her rowing) but don't lose sight of the reason for the trip. It was because their marriage was on the rocks that Susan went with her husband in hopes of fixing things between them, and it was in the end, when she told her husband it was time she started going in his direction rather than her own, that my tears came. It would have been glorious if more movies by this superb team had followed.

3-0 out of 5 stars RIDICULOUS PLOT BUT KIND OF FUN
Well this one may only be for fans of Edward G. Robinson but it's not a bad film.I cought it one evening on TCM and I've always kind of liked Robinson although his films don't turn up nearly enough on TV and few are on VHS, and we won't even talk about DVD.Robinson is John Lindsay, a law professor who is asked by a local civic leader to help bring down the organized crime that is plaguing the city.Lindsay eventually recruits several of his students to help infiltrate the mob ranks and eventually turn the tables on the very man who requested Lindsay's help in the first place.Ah...you sure couldn't get away with that kind of plotting these days...but Robinson is always so fun to watch and seems to put equal gusto into every role he takes on.

"Goin' to Town" is one of Mae West's funnier films. She plays Cleo Borden--a former saloon girl who strikes it rich after the death of her fiance. Cleo takes over his cattle and oil empire with gusto, but is attracted to British oil engineer, Edward Carrington (Paul Cavanagh). She tries one trick after another to get his attention, but he says he's not interested--confiding in a workmate that she's "rather crude oil." But when he leaves for business in Buenos Aires, Cleo follows in hot pursuit.
