3-0 out of 5 stars Book was terrific, movie a disappointment
Perhaps I should not have read the book first. The book was terrific: colorful characters, beautiful descriptive passages of the Utah country (as only Zane Grey can write), great story lines.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Western series
The actors are superb and are working with what I consider one of the most romantic and exciting western stories ever published (one of my favorites).
3-0 out of 5 stars Almost a great Film
Zane Grey had the unique ability to paint pictures through words of a world he experienced first hand in a time before television.Riders of the Purple Sage missed a great opportunity to literally show the Purple Sage and create a pictorial reference to time and place. The casting of Harris and Madigan was acceptable as they appeared to be instrumental in bringing the project to the screen. However, Grey's writing is not at all comfortable on television, it is big screen, big, big screen and the environment that Grey so lovingly described all but vanished in the clunky directing and the overuse of dissolves in the editing process. David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia is a Film I would have suggested they try to emulate. Grey created balances of character and place and this film badly missed. The casting of the young couple was SOOO Hollywood. I can almost see the casting session "but we need to attract a younger audience, let's not get too real with this and alienate the viewer and the Mormons" Yawn! ... Read more

Editorial Review

A complete lack of imagination is what qualifies this as a B movie. Thankfully, this snowy adventure about a boy and his dogs is charming enough to entice the kiddies. Charismatic MacKenzie Astin plays a teenager trying to save the family farm by entering a 522-mile sled-dog marathon. Except for Astin, the lusciously scenic background has more depth than most of the characters. This is so predictable you could take a nap and miss nothing except a few rousing scenes in the 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul sled race. Although this is visually more appealing than most family fare, one wishes more attention had been paid to the script. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THE RACE IS ON
Admittedly contrived and predictable with stereotypical characters, Disney's 1994 IRON WILL is nonetheless an enjoyable, sentimental and heartfelt film.Sean's younger brother Mackenzie Astin stars as a deteremined youth who in 1917 plans on winning a 500 mile dogsled race from Winnipeg to St. Paul.He is of course faced with nasty adversaries (BRIAN COX included)and a blizzard and his lead dog who is attacked by an opponent's vicious lead dog.Kevin Spacey brings his usual fire to the role of an opportunistic journalist who initially uses Astin's exploits to gain readers, but eventually warms to the boy's heroic persistence.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie
I don't expect anything more of a movie than to enjoy it and be entertained. I don't seek to psychoanalyze or offer up in-depth critique, it's only a movie. I either enjoy it or I don't. Oh sure, it's a little corny here and there, but the dogs and the scenery more than compensate for any shortcomings. A thoroughly enjoyable movie..

4-0 out of 5 stars One Of Disney's Better Efforts
How much of this story is true is up for dispute. I suspect most of it is highly exaggerated. Nonetheless, it is inspirational and fun to watch: an excellent adventure tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved Sam Neill in this movie
This movie should be understood more as a historical love story more than an attack on TJ's charactor. While we will never know the whole truth about his relationship with Sally Hemmings, I think this movie treated it well-- as a true love affair, and as Jefferson maturing over time.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of a kind
I found the movie both enlighting and puzzling. First of all we will never truely know what kind of love Sally and thomas really shared.Things that are written could have been fiction yet some may be true but we will never know the truth. I like the way the movie portrays thomas jefferson as a true mans, man and also showed the love that he had for his children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie
This movie dares to suggest that Thomas Jefferson might have loved his slave Sally Hemings. No one will ever know for sure if he loved her but if they had a relationship it would have lasted close to forty years. Can a man have a relationship with a woman for forty years and feel nothing for her, even if she was his slave and a black woman? Some people would suggest that but not this movie. Jefferson himself was a contradiction. He said slavery was wrong, yet he owned slaves. This movie focuses on the kind of relationship they may have had and the people they were. Sally is portrayed as a strong and educated woman. We know she went to France and she could have been educated while she was there. She is also the half sister of Jefferson's dead wife and she could have quite possibly looked like her. If Sally did look like Jefferson's dead wife, whom he loved dearly, could he have been attracted to her. Sally is shown as a woman that Jefferson could have loved. Jefferson is shown as a man wrestling inside with his public life and his private life. The relationship they have is tested many times but remains strong even after his death. It may be hard for some to believe that these two people loved each other but this movie suggests that they just didn't love each other but that they were devoted to each other. I like how it focuses on Sally's life because she is the one people know little about. It goes into detail about the kind of life she might have lived with her children and the joy and sadness she might have felt, living during this time. This movie offers a refreshing description of Sally Hemings and her life. If you are interested in history, Sally Hemings or Thomas Jefferson I recommend that you watch this movie. It might change everything you know about these two people. This is a great movie and I highly recommend it to everyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical but Corny
I like the movie for it's accuracy in uniforms, equipment, and weaponry.I like the scenery in the movie although it is filmed in Arizona and not New Mexico.FT Craig was in an area geographically different from Arizona.I've been there. Also, Rattlesnake Springs that was mentioned in the movie is actually in Texas.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Hollywierd production on Buffalo Soldiers
This movie is very sad. Seminole Negro Indian Scouts only served in Texas, not New Mexico. There are no officers present but Colonel Grierson, only the sergeant major. Grierson is presented as a wimp when he was in reality a hero of both the Civil War and western frontier. No american soldiers would have been able to sneak up on the Apache. No black soldiers ever had to dismount to pass through a western town, this is purely Hollywood. The song that is sung by the black troopers as they are carrying one of there deceased to the cemetary was written in the 1930s. This is one sad movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rating Warning
This is more about the rating perhaps than the move...However, I think that it is important to know that this is not,in my opinion a rated 'G' movie!Within the first few minutes, they used prejudicial language and swore-causing me to quickly turn it off in discomfort and disgust. When I think of a rated G movie, I think of something like Lion King, Parent Trap, or other family-type movies that EVERYONE no matter what their age can watch without offense. This movie is not one of those.I purchased this movie believing that I could share with/educate my kids on the historical significance and heroism of the Buffalo Soldiers and instead had to turn it off after 15 minutes due to its inappropriateness for anyone under 15. They were exposed to too much historic accuracy and prejudiced for my taste. We discussed why the movie creators may have added these words and situations (to be historically accurate and show the adversity the Buffalo Soldiers faced), but still felt the story could be told accurately without the use of such a strong and distructive prejudical term. I believe the rating should be changed. While this may be a worthwhile movie to show the plight of the African American in history, I found it to use too realistically harsh language and situations for its G rating. I relied on the previous reviews and the rating in making my decision to purchase and view this movie with my kids.Believe me, I will not make that mistake again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ER the pilot
I love ER but don't waste your money on this pilot issue if you've got season 1.This is just the same as the first two hours of season 1.Yes I did waste money on it because I read here that the pilot was different from the first show.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Episode of "ER" ....how different back then.
Greetings...I just got done watching this video for the first time. I had been a fan of "ER" off and on since it started, but have recently given up watching the show because they killed off several characters that I was rather fond of, and it kind of spoiled the show for me after that. This video makes it clear that ER was, in it's glory days, the best drama on T.V. Anyone who buys this tape will see that, even if they aren't familiar with the show. Watch for an unusual performance by Miguel Ferrer as a patient reacting to his awful diagnosis...Miguel would go on later to a starring role as Dr. Garret Macy on "Crossing Jordan".
5-0 out of 5 stars ER shines in this Brilliant Masterpiece
ER was brilliant. I was just sitting there without taking my eyes off the T.V. If you love the drama and suspense this is your show. It was so real unlike other shows where you know where all the gadgets and computer animation was done, it was like you were right there next to the doctors and looking at the patient. ER shows the truth behind being a doctor in the hospital its turns, ups and downs and consequences. Although we know none of its real, all fiction it is very alive and realistic. Watching it over and over never got boring for me, it was just better. It was very interesting getting to know the crew and its begginning. I give ER the best ratting five out of five. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Recreation of notorious FBI stand off in Marion, Utah
Nerve jangling telemovie based on the true story of Utah polygamist John Singer and his alleged murder at the hands of law enforcement officers. After Singer's death, Adam Swapp moved into the house with Singer's wife, Vickie, and her children, and they continued to wage war with the local community including blowing up the Marion LDS Chapel. Retreating into their ranch, the Swapp family held off law enforcement officials for many days who resisted storming the property due to the number of young children inside the fortified house. At the time, much was made by the media of the use of "psychological pressure" to try and dislodge the Singer family. Powerful searchlights, blaring horns and swooping helicopters were all used by law enforcement officials to disrupt the sleep of the occupants of the house and to try to force them to surrender.
