5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites and finally found it on DVD!
The acting's excellent, the music's amazing, and the combination of Mikhail Baryshnikov's--Misha's and Hines' dancing will blow you away.Russian ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov essentially plays himself--a Russian ballet star who escaped the USSR in the 1970's and sought asylum in the US.When a plane carrying him crashes over Russia, he's back in the Soviet net with no escape. His handler is Gregory Hines, a US dancer and US expatriate who renounced his US citizenship.
3-0 out of 5 stars Two Spectacular Performers Dance Around One Weak Cold War Thriller...Literally
Seeing this 1985 movie (dubbed without irony by director Taylor Hackford as a "political dance thriller" in his DVD commentary) over twenty years later in a pristine new print reminds me exactly what I thought about it back then. That is that Hackford recruited two world-class dancers of completely different genres and then went about and contrived a far-fetched Cold War thriller story around them. It is really the unparalleled dancing that makes this film still watchable beginning with Mikhail Baryshnikov's extraordinary performance of Roland Petit's ballet, "Le jeune homme et la mort", opposite Florence Faure over the opening credits. His artful athleticism inevitably makes the rest of his acting feel rather pedestrian, as he unsurprisingly portrays Nikolai Rodchenko, a world-renowned Russian ballet dancer who has defected to the US after having been the leading performer of the Kirov Ballet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Summer Nights
I love it that this is out in DVD so everyone can watch it over and over to see how these dancers work out and get in shape and see their joy in dancing.I was amazed at Baryshnikov's flexibility, when he does the splits on the floor, against the wall, and the strength of the jumps of both dancers.Hines' footwork was really beautiful, too.Being a dance devotee, I am always very impressed with the way dancers work so hard, and you could see it here. The movie had a fun plot that was serious, too.You knew it would end up okay but it made you think. The music was excellent and upbeat, too, as well as the scenes of Russia and the theater.I'm happy to have this in my permanent collection, because it's really a classic for dance fans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent movie about one of the best
This is my favorite movie about a musician (my 2nd favorite being Walk the Line).Jamie Foxx does an outstanding job playing the part of Ray Charles. The movie covers Ray's rise to stardom flashing back occasionally to his childhood when Ray lost his brother at an early age and then shortly after began to go blind. It also covers very well how Ray's mother had a positive influence on his life and how she insisted he be strong and assertive in spite of his blindness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic Biopic!
Instantly an all-time favorite. A film I never grow tired of watching. Jamie Foxx captured the essence of Ray Charles' mannerisms and speech so well, you tend to forget the actor, and seemingly believe it's the real Ray. Show's that intense true-to-life dramas can be put to film, yet without the perverse language and nudity. Some things are better left to the imagination. Well deserving of all the praise for Jamie Foxx, Taylor Hackford, and the entire cast and crew. Great DVD addition to my ever growing collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ray
Any movie about Ray Charles is guaranteed to have a fantastic soundtrack. What else? First of all, Jamie Foxx became Ray Charles. He was a pleasure to watch. Next, since we have childhood flashbacks, we must have a credible young actor. We do. The kid's great. Next, the story. Yep, we've got that. No sugar coating of the lows and an excellent job of sharing the highs. It's a fine, fine movie. It focused on the early years, before rehab, and probably simplified some things to fit into only 2.5 hours. So, not perfect. But very good. Well worth watching.

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still emotional
This film really stands the test of time-and the famous line: 'I ain't got no place to go' is still strong enough to pull a tear from your eye. It's hard to believe that Debra and Richard didn't get along through the filming of this classic.Hollywood rarely get these romance flicks right, but this one is dead on.Now romance films have to be a comedy. When was the last Hollywood straight romance movie?Richard Genre (the King of romance films: Pretty Woman, Last Knight, Runaway Bride.)is fantasic and Debra Winger never looked or acted better. (except for the that small little film called: Terms of Enderment.) Do yourself a favor and see this movie again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to Make You Cry
A good character study of a boy who grew under the wing of a moral-less father and still had the balls to make something of himself and his life. Richard Gere is hot and sexy as the naval aviator in training. Winger's character can grate on your nerves a bit but you warm up to what her character stands for. I've seen this movie over one hundred times and each time I'm just as interested as the first. I still cry at the ending. Lots of swearing both in dialogue and in the catchy songs. One of the best films of all time.

5-0 out of 5 stars From zero to hero
The story of a hardened loser who overcomes his own personal demons and learns about love, friendship and responsibility.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vincent, Make Us More Idols to Worship
This movie was released in 1980, starring Ray Sharkey and Tovah Feldshuh. Ray is Vincent Vacarri, said character being loosely based on Bob Marucci, an idolmaker in his own right - Frankie Avalon, Fabian. Vincent is ever-seeking fame and fortune, but feels he can't cut it in the spotlight himself. Those who can't, teach (and capitalize from it). His drive to succeed is merciless, on himself, and others, but his character remains deep and thoroughly likeable. Tune in, Peter Gallagher fans, he is young and hot-hot-hot in this one, while Vincent molds him into idol material. As great looking as this guy is, physically it's not a far stretch but he benefits from instruction. Memories of Ed Sullivan rock and roll first viewings - Elvis, the Beatles, etc. - will hit strongly. Great music, interesting story line...Christine Taylor (Marsha in The Brady Bunch) is a reporter who wants to do more to our Idol than just interview him.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of 3 best rock and roll movies
Forget 'Spinal Tap'--it's purely satire; and yes, 'A Hard Day's Night' is a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Performances!
This 1988 movie may seem at first to be about football, but it is really about themain characters who are developed to a depth you do not see in mainstream film anymore. What a delight to have Dennis Quaid,Jessica Lange, and Timothy Hutton still in their primeand all in the same film. Yes,the main message is: 'there is life after football'. But to breathe life into that message you must have characters who become alive in your heart as you watch the film. Mainstream movies simply will not let characters develop like this anymore, because we do not have the patience for character-driven films. This is an under-rated work that will simply pull on your heart,as you identify with the lives of these very American stories and struggles which surround these fine actors over three decades. If you want to see where we traveled from the late 1950's to the early 80's,this is a movie that uses the subject of football as a kind of time portal, only so you can see where we really traveled through the development of Gavin and Babes Grey. Quaid and Lange and the entire supporting cast will give you a deep slice of Americana. For me,it tapped into my own identity during those years---------not an easy thing for any movie to do with so much success.Take some time to see this film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trying to get things right
Dennis Quaid plays a college football hero stuck in that role and incapable of doing anything else. Jessica Lange is the college queen who marries him, has lots of babies, and gets neglected by Quaid. Quaid goes on to the pros, passing by business opportunities along the way, and stays on too long (it's all he knows). When they are about to go bankrupt, Lange takes charge, getting a job and holding them together. More important, she grows as a person, taking on responsibilities and doing things she never thought she could do. Meanwhile, Quaid continues to live in the past. Then the best 20 minutes of the movie occurs: Quaid and Lange confront their dilemma and work it out. Whether their (and the movie's) solution is believable is questionable, but the acting here is very sharp.

4-0 out of 5 stars EVERYBODY'S ALL WORKED UP OVER TOUCHDOWNS AND FOREPLAY
"Everybody's All American" is the story of Gavin Grey(Dennis Quaid)a guy who goes from stud-muffin to couch potato faster than you can say touchdown. In this endevor he's aided by Jessica Lange - the no-good-for-him love of his life. Taylor Hackford directs with slick style and lots of heart this story better suited for reruns of "General Hospital" than a big screen romance. 5-0 out of 5 stars Proof of my best movies
Indeed this movie may seem like a common action-drama-love story but not really watch it attentively and you'll get what i mean. It gives you the message of professional and moral responsibility over a situation that is confusing whether to abandon your job or fulfill it. In this matter russell is divided with his affection towards his client's wife and the duty to save him. Great sequencing of events every part is juicy. the rescue in the end is classic special forces operations. the saddest moment was when meg drives away with her rescued husband and russell cant take off his eyes from thevehicle. Great movie indeed!

4-0 out of 5 stars No Proof Required, This Movie's Got Life!
I like Russell Crowe and David Morse so when they are together in a movie of course I have to buy it.I probably would have given this five stars if I had reviewed it last year but I've watched it like twelve times so the absolute wonderfulness has worn off a bit.Definitely a fun movie to watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very under-rated film!
I hate when a film fails in the box office due to off screen antics versus actually sucking. It still baffles me that 'Dukes of Hazzard' can overtake 'Cinderella Man' in the box office, all because Russell Crowe has a temper.WHO CARES!!!Cinderella Man was and is a far better movie. Now this brings me to 'Proof of Life' which failed in the box office mostly due to the offscreen affair between Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe. Now rumers circulated that it was Russell Crowe who ended the marriage of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, although Ryan claims that their marriage was already on shakey grounds.Again, WHO CARES!!!This movie is still a great movie, a great plot and some equally impressive acting.WHile not Crowes best performance he still puts his heart and soul into Terry, a H&R negotiator (Kidnap and Ransom)...anyways...the story is like this.Alice (Ryan) and Peter have a rocky marriage. They are at ends with each other because Peter is to involved in his work that he neglects his wife.he's never around and when he is he's always preoccupied with getting his dam built. That is all until he is kidnapped and held ransom by a group of terrorists in South America. That is where Terry comes into play.He is sent to help negotiate Peters safe return. There are a few plot twists and it ends up that Terry is doing this mission seperate from his company (kinda probono). The movie realy revolves around the emotions of the charactors. You know, I feel it's unfair to feel that Meg Ryans charactor is unsympatetic because of the assumed affair between Alice and Terry. As the beginning of the film helped us see, her husband didn't pay any attention to her, and that is one of the main reasons that women leave their husbands in the first place, not because they don't love their husbands but because they don't feel their husbands love them and find that love in the eyes of a strager who gives them attention.Like Terry did, just by asking the name of her dead daughter, like she says "no ones ever asked me that before".I thought that this movie was very well done, and is worth a watch even if you aren't pleased with the off screen lives of the actors, it doesn't change the fact that they deliver above par on screen. The only, and I mean only, reason that I did not give this movie 5 stars is the fact that it is all to common to rate a movie R for no apparent reason. This movie has very little violence and NO sex (although a sex scene between Crowe and Ryan would have been welcome) and the only reason for an R rating is the unnessisary F-Word use...if only these words were ommited then my children could watch this great film! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dance with the Devil
This is a very addictive film after the story picks up,gets moving at a faster pace, the characters develope further and the plot thickens...you can't help but get sucked in.My only complaint is Keanue Reeves with his lame Florida country boy accent,it's hard to stomach for over two hours.Al Pacino is fantastic in this film, and there is no doubt that he carries this film from start to end from his charismatic on screen personality and performance, you can't help but love it!Keanue does a great job,I only wish he lost the accent. Not to mention of course, the beautiful Charlize Theron lends a strong supporting role, not to mention her other fabulous attributes.Watch as the plot thickens when hot shot lawyer Kevin gets his strings pulled like a pupet.Only in the end when all seems to be doomed does he learn and accept what has come to be and is put into a position to make a decision that will change humanity and the balance of the world. Will he do it?If you haven't seen this film,I highly reccomend watching it,and you will love the ending."Was there any doubt that the 20th. century wasn't all mine?"Strong biting words that will etch into your memory when spoken so soundly from Satin himself.Kind'a makes you wonder where we are headed now, doesn't it?Well worth owning, and if anyone asks...you can always say,"The devil made ya do it".

5-0 out of 5 stars Stars are stars are stars
What a revealing factstory about Devil and inside look into his way of the recruit and of course what nice actors that are in the cast. AL Pacino and Keanu are one of the most talented in the industry. As I remember the words of a great Saint, Jean Vianney : "The devil only tempts those souls that wish to abandon sin... the others belong to him: he has no need to tempt them." Rveleaing

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Keanu Reeves as a small town attorney who can't seem to lose.He is recruited to a large New York firm and becomes a star as he seems to get all kinds of "bad" people off.One can immediately sense there is something not so ordinary with his boss (Al Pacino) who causes terror to Reeves' mother and seems to have sexy woman fawning over him.Not too long after joining the firm, Reeves catches one of the firm's top employees shredding questionable documents after hours and then Reeves' wife seems to go mad after a wierd dream.

Editorial Review

Dark secrets, family torments, and two murders swirl around the stoic, hardened figure of Dolores Claiborne (Kathy Bates), a housekeeper accused of murdering her employer of 22 years. Then there was that timely accident that took Dolores's husband (David Strathairn) during the solar eclipse of 1975. Yet with all the somber suffering that follows Dolores like a miasma of pain, none of it compares with the heartache of a relationship she has with her grown daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Although this flick is rife with horror, it is not of the supernatural kind, but rather of the torment only real people can impose on one another. The script is full of colorful language, and director Taylor Hackford successfully weaves several plot threads and psychological dilemmas throughout this engrossing tale without diminishing any of them. He not only culls intense performances from his cast, but he also brings to life the landscape around them. When the film's best-kept secret is finally given up, it occurs under the surreal backdrop of a solar eclipse that is a truly sensational bit of cinematography. Read more

Awesome movie, Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Lee are brilliant, along with Judy Parfitt and David Straithorn. Oscar performances in my book. This is one my favourite films, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth will set you free
When Selena's mother is arrested for the murder of her boss, she returns to the seaside town to find out what happened. Selena, a New York City reporter, has distanced herself from her hometown and mother since leaving for college. As she pieces together what happened, Selena confronts her own demons that drove her into a life of haphazard relationships and fast living.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kathy Bates does it again.
After her amazing performance in Misery, Bates takes the role of another Stephen King character: Dolores Claiborne.

Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at best
I can't get over all the glowing reviews of this deeply flawed film I've read here! First off, let me say that Jeff Bridges is one of my absolute all-time favorite actors ("Big Liebowski" and "Fearless" by themselves would make up for a dozen "Against All Odds") but this movie is a serious train wreck! What a waste of good actors and beautiful locations. It is truly poignant to see the highlights of the Yucatan area circa 1983 before that wondrous part of the world became package tour Gringolandia and that alone is almost worth the two hours and two bucks but Good God does this movie nosedive into atrocious absurdity over the last hour or so! I think a couple of more rewrites might have done a world of good as none of the actors involved are bad (George Poppadopalous arguably notwithstanding), the locations are second to none, and the basic storyline had at least a marginal amount of promise. Whatever the case, I suppose that's neither here nor there because this movie turns into a semi-glossy Matlock crapfest once Jeff and Rachel finish steaming up the Mayan stonework. Que pena. The amazing footage of the pyramids and statues of Chichen Itza and the gorgeous turquoise waters of Cozumel and Tulum are definintely worth checking out though if you think you can stomach the ham handed TV movie way in which the last half of this film unfolds.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Loved This Film!
What do you get when you combine Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, James Woods, Richard Widmark, and Jane Greer? The VERY best of the old and the new. This movie was a classy remake of "Out of the Past" which was made sometime in the 1950's.
3-0 out of 5 stars Gotta say, Jeff was the man in this one
Bridges was the man in this one.Without Bridges this movie is laughably terrible. He carries the movie basically.Wards character is basically a piece of ace and none of the other characters beyond Woods are developed at all.

Now rumers circulated that it was Russell Crowe who ended the marriage of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, although Ryan claims that their marriage was already on shakey grounds.Again, WHO CARES!!!This movie is still a great movie, a great plot and some equally impressive acting.WHile not Crowes best performance he still puts his heart and soul into Terry, a H&R n
