3-0 out of 5 stars Martin and Lewis are no "Ghost Breakers"
"Scared Stiff" is a remake of a 1940s Bob Hope comedy called "The Ghost Breakers" which was directed by George Marshall, who also happened to direct this version as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD COMEDY HORROR SPOOF
Martin and Lewis teamed again in 1953 for this fun comedy horror that is somewhat of a remake of Bob Hope's Ghostbreakers.martin plays nightclub singer Larry Todd and Lewis is busboy Myron Mertz who flee a murder charge to a mysterious caribbean island inherited by wealthy heiress Mary Carroll. There's some genuinely spooky set pieces and scenes in the film although the horror element fades quickly when Dean stars singing. It's just not a great mix i guess.Lewis does well treading on ground set forth by many earlier comedy stars including the Three Stooges and Abbott & Costello and is his usual, manic, slapstick self. One only wishes there were a bit more horror than song to the film but I guess Dean had to have his requisite numbers in the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Martin and Lewis essential...
The reason why I found this particular Martin and Lewis film 100% pleasing is because it not only incorporates classic M&L antics, jokes and over-the-top characterizations of both men, it also includes a steady storyline that is easy and entertaining to follow. Although the seldom dull storyline is due to the already established original film "Ghost Breakers" the film is quite worth viewing for any M&L fan, especially since most plots of M&L films are slightly less stable. Therefore, along with such M&L films as "The Stooge" and "My Friend Irma" (which the exception of M&L not being 'headliners' in their first film), "Scared Stiff" is a M&L essential. However, for less entusiastic fans of the comedy team, the original "Ghost Breakers" release may seem to deserve more credit; personally, having not seen the original film in addition to my neverending admiration for M&L, "Scared Stiff" is a wonderful addition to my M&L video collection. ... Editorial Review

This quintessential Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musical has all the kinetic energy and beaming goofiness that made their films together (nine in all) so popular--and so easy to lampoon. The son of a vaudeville performer (Charles Winninger), Rooney decides to put on his own show (in a barn!) to save his family's fortune, his town, his peers, and, gosh darn it, even the American way of life. The star luster generated by Garland matches the explosive energy of Rooney's performance. Director Busby Berkeley's big production numbers are a sight to behold, from a march through town for the title number to an embarrassingly dated minstrel show routine. The movie was made the same year as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes in Arms
Great old movie, good watching for the times we live in. A lot of good music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mickey and Judy!
This classic film stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland as teenagers living in Seaport, Long Island, NY just before the Great Depression struck. Vaudeville is dying; thus Rooney's family business as show biz perfomers is very much at stake. When the older folks leave Seaport to put on a show and prove to the world that Vaudeville is not dead yet; they leave the younger folks behind. What to do? Put on a show! Rooney's character trys to woo some fading child star so she can put up the money for the show and bumps Garland from the lead. She inevitably retakes the lead in the show and everything ends happily ever after when out of nowhere some hot-shot producer likes what he saw in the barn show scene. (By the way, one cautionary note: the barn show scene includes a minstrel show; although typical of that era it is not only dated but potentially ofensive to some viewers.) The viewer also gets an extra treat: Margaret Hamilton has a small role as the nasty old lady who runs welfare in the town and wants to send the kids off to a vocational school. All in all, this really is a very goood movie and great fun to watch. I would add that this is an obvious must-have for any Garland or Rooney fan. A BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Essential for Rooney-Garland Fans
In the 1939 Mickey Rooney was among the top box office draws in the world.Judy Garland had appeared as a supporting player in two Rooney films, and the two had significant chemistry--more over, Garland had just completed photography for THE WIZARD OF OZ--a film that MGM rightly expected would launch her to international stardom. The time was right to costar the two, and MGM did it with BABES IN ARMS.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Sullivan's Oscar Moment
I don't know why Ed Sullivan didn't get more movie roles after his performance in The Singing Nun.Astonishing, simply astonishing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great music, fine cast.
Based on a true story, The Singing Nun tells of a nun, Debbie Reynolds, who walks a fine line between joyous praise through music and vain self-glorification as her popular songs become commercially successful. The story's pretty simple as she rises to fame, with a profound twist that gives her a wake-up call. There's a terrific supporting cast, but the main appeal is the music, my favorite being the song "Dominique," which she performs on the Ed Sullivan show (apparently based on a true-life event, with Ed Sullivan appearing in the movie to recreate it).Fortunately this melody is used extensively in the films score making for very pleasant viewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Movie....
This movie is sweet and fun. That's all. It's not complicated, it's not a biography. It's a fictionalized account of a "Singing Nun". Debbie Reynolds has a beautiful voice.I loved this moviewhen I was little and still enjoy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, warm trip down memory lane!
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a charming and playful Halloween story that adults and kids will love. Bing Crosby's smooth tones are the perfect accompaniment for this old-fashionied cartoon - perfect for snuggling under the covers on a dark, rainy night! I absolutely loved it as a 7-year-old kid and I am thrilled to share it with my little boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The eleventh animated Disney masterpiece is a winner
I recently reviewed "Fun and Fancy Free," released just two years before this film.Walt Disney tried the same thing in that film that he did in this film; he combined two shorts into one release.Unfortunately, the technique did not work well in "Fun and Fancy Free."The technique worked very well in this feature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney does its magic!
Another Disney classic just like Pocahondas, Shrek, Snow white, Alandin and Lion King. These are cartoon figures and films that are never forgoten.

2-0 out of 5 stars The legend reworked...
To be fair, the legends of Herakles, as they were originally written, have little to do with this movie, but maybe that's for the best.Having grown up on Superman, Batman and the Justice League, I have a hard time calling a person like Herakles a hero.In the original legends, he was a warrior, but also a brute who eventually wound up killing his wife and children in a fit of rage.He also wasn't, as far as I can tell, as strong as in this version.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun - the Kids and I Liked It
This is a great show and very entertaining. The story isn't the Greek classic, but it's a fine riff on it.The songs are good, and they grow on you as you watch.I take issue with the reviewer who thought there was gratuitous sexuality in the Meg character - it's just a cartoon, for pete's sake.

Editorial Review

The script for this movie was written by outrageous poet-author-alcoholic Charles Bukowski. But director Barbet Schroeder makes it into an oddly amusing story of a pugnacious drunk writer (Mickey Rourke) based on Bukowski himself. Rourke spends almost all of his time at the bar, struggling with sobriety (he's against it) and, occasionally, having fistfights with the bartender (Frank Stallone). He meets another souse, a formerly attractive woman (Faye Dunaway), and gets involved with her, which means they drink copious amounts of liquor and try to have sex. Not much happens beyond that, yet this film is strangely entertaining, for all of its bottom-of-the-barrel humanity. Maybe that's the secret: "Oh, the humanity...." Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Rourke could've been more subtle
I was in a Bukowski phase when I purchased and watched this movie, which I found disappointing. I liked the storyline, but thought Mickey Rourke overacted. Faye Dunaway had her role pegged, though.
5-0 out of 5 stars A staggering good time
Who but Mickey Rourke could adequately portray a character based on the supremely inimitable Charles Bukowski? In a film that is both dingy and bright, Rourke staggers from the screen a pickled genius and gives a stellar performance as the hard-drinking, alley-brawling, pickup line-snarling Henry.
4-0 out of 5 stars I should own this movie
But I don't because only rubes and collector freaks own movies. I never understood why people buy movies. How many times must you watch a movie to make up what it would cost to rent it? Something like 10-15 times, or less, depending on where you rent.

Michael Radford's adaption of George Orwell's foreboding literary premonition casts John Hurt and Suzanna Hamilton as lovers who must keep their courtship secret.Aside from criminalizing sex and interpersonal relationships, the ruling party in their country Oceania both fabricates reality and reconstructs history for the sake of oppressing the masses. They brainwash their citizens via large, propaganda-spewing TV monitors installed in their living rooms, which also inspect everyone's activities. Hurt and Hamilton are among the few we see desperately trying to fight the system by keeping control of their thoughts and beliefs. While the atmosphere becomes a bit too stifling at times, the images are quite striking with their muted colors and dilapidated sets. In an interesting bit of casting, Richard Burton costars (in his final role) as a government agent who surreptitiously exposes Hurt to the ideas of resistance. Unlike many like-minded films, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Humm it did not happen in 1984, but how about now???
Look at current events an our culture of fear. Look at them. This movie is great, but read the book 1st if you can.If not at least watch this movie and think about it.It is really scarry when you think about it and how did the author know ahead so far. While you are at it read brave new world. It is great too and will make you think too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good production, but absolutely pointless
I should say first that this should be a good movie, at least on paper.John Hurt and Richard Burton turn in solid performances, and everything about the production -- set design, costumes, etc. -- looks just as it should. But there is something lacking in this adaptation that makes it pale compared to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas movie
I have worn out my VHS tape I copied off tv many years ago of this Christmas classic.I will be thrilled if they ever release it and the other Addie Mills specials on DVD. I always looked forward to seeing them when they aired. It was nice seeing the review from Lisa Lucas (Addie Mills).Nice to hear she enjoyed making these movies and knows how much pleasure she brought us all. She and Mildred Natwick and Jason Robards were so special together.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christmas Stories Ever
It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my all time favorite T.V. special!
I loved watching this T.V. special when I was a young--er.I was about the same age too as Addie, and I looked forward to watching it year after year after year, but then they stopped running the special and I was so disappointed.I just took a chance to see if I could find it for sale on the Internet and low and behold, I found it so I just placed my order! You have no idea how thrilled I was to see that it was available to buy.I can't wait to see it again, considering it's been about 30 years or more since I've seen it.I couldn't remember the name of the special but all I knew for certain was Jason Robards played Addie's dad, and Mildred Natwick played her grandmother. It was one of the best things I've ever seen on T.V., and now I can pass this on to my children.

Jody is the kind of guy that every 1970s teen looked up to. He's inhis early 20s, has a cool car, splendid '70s hair, leather jacket, playsguitar and (naturally) snags all the girls. His little brother, Mike, inparticular, admires him and emulates him at every turn. Things start to goastray, however, when the two brothers and their friend Reggie attend afuneral for a friend. Mike notices a tall man working at the funeral home; inthe course of his snooping, he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into theback of a hearse as easily as if it was a shoebox. Jody doesn't believe hislittle brother's stories, though, until he brings home the tall man's severedfinger, still wriggling in what appears to be French's mustard. From there, the film picks up a terrific momentum that doesn't let up until thesequel-ripe twist ending.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a horror classic
I think that Phantasm was a big surprise hit back in '79 for different reasons than why it has endured as a cult movie to this day.
5-0 out of 5 stars TALL MAN CLEANIN' HOUSE!!!!!
Classic, 'nuff said (Thanks, Stan Lee)!
5-0 out of 5 stars DRIPS WITH SURREALISM AND ATMOSPHERE
Phasntasm, a little-known (outside of fans) horror fasntasy from 1979 is, simply stated, one of the most effective, atmospheric and genuinely scary movies to come out in a long long time.Even after 27 years, it still holds up as a truly unsettling and thoughtful horror movie and, believe me, it WILL scare the bejesus out of you.The thing I remember most about Phantasm was the normal, suburban culdesac surroundings where the film takes place.I swear, it will remind you of the neighborhood you grew up in.If you thought Spielberg's Americana neighborhoods seem real, wait til you check out the settings here. The fact that the 2 boys live alone in this big Brady Bunch-type house makes the whole thing kind of dreamlike.(Their parents died recently with little explanation). The acting is spot-on.The guy that plays the little brother is completely realistic. You will swear you know this kid!Likewise his cool brother and Reggie the ice cream man. These 3 genuinely seem like they have been friends for years. The acting seems very spontaneous and natural. You totally buy into these characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great drama and romance.A very psychological movie
I want to say something a bit different about this movie than some of the other reviews. Clearly, Winger and Hopkins hit a grand slam as character actors and the plot is good as so many reviewers have pointed out.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I don't want to be lost."
'Shadowlands' is a film you must be willing to sit through to appreciate, for the first twenty minutes are dreadfully boring. That said, once you get past the exterior and get to the meat of this tragic love story you'll be emotionally drawn into each frame. The true life story of C.S. Lewis (Hopkins) is a beautiful story of love, trust and the ability to allow suffering to appreciate that love and trust.Jack (as C.S. Lewis is reffered) has built a life of comfort for himself, a life around those who can't hurt him.He enjoys the fact that he hasn't felt the cold hand of suffering in his lifetime, but after meeting the beautiful and bold Joy Gresham (Debra Winger) all that is about to change.Joy is a divorced poet who brings her young son to see Jack (beings that he has written the succesfull Narnia franchise) and she immediatly becomes smitten with Jack, as he does her.Their relationship, strickly platonic, changes as Joy is diagnosed with cancer and given a short time to live. The remainder of the film is so heartbreaking for it shows Jack realizing how much he loves this woman, and his faith is tested as he wonders why God would allow this to happen. As Jack soon realizes, it's the suffering now that allowed us the love then...it's a package deal (that's not exactly the way he says it, but it's the general jist).Anyways, it's a truly wonderful film with brilliant acting on all parts, Winger and Hopkins taking the bulk of the praise.Just remember, stick it out and you'll appreciate why! ... The studio apparently agreed with the previous reviewer, since the W.C. Fields segment was cut from the movie when it was initially released in theaters.

5-0 out of 5 stars That mythical place where everyone gets what he/she deserves
Other reviewers have given plenty of information regarding the general shape of this film--stars, cast, vignettes.A wonderful collaboration of ten different writers who together with a cast of stars, character actors, the Hall Johnson Choir (one of the gems of the Harlem Renaissance), and probably every extra then available in Southern California trace the path of a tailcoat cursed by it's tailor. This film was released in September 1942, the same month the German 6th Army began it's advance on Stalingrad; it was, and should be, considered light entertainment. Not Frank Capra-ish, each vignette weaves into the next with the final feeling of the film leading the viewer tobelieve that people, good and bad, somehow get what they deserve.A gentle gem with a particularly wonderful performance by Edward G. Robinson.Watch it with an open mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of 20th Century Fox stars
"Tales of Manhattan" was an essentially pointless series of vignettes starring a plethora of stars under contract to 20th Century Fox studios. The pretext for the story surrounded a finely tailored formal tailcoat which was purported to be cursed. The tailcoat represented a talisman of both good and evil as it was passed from character to character.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why no rerelease of this sweet family movie?
The synopsis of the movie: An eccentric toy company magnate (voice of Vincent Price)dies and wills his estate to the winner(s) of a strange Scavenger Hunt. The family members and servants form teams to obtain odd things like an ostrich, an authentic suit of armor and the "worlds fattest man" each of which is worth a number of points. The movie is very amusing and great for children and adults.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much like "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World".
I remember seeing this in the theater while in High School. The whole movie is a laugh out loud riot. They don't make them like this anymore.Full of great comedic actors from 1979.Rare appearances from Ruth Gordon, Vincent Price, and many others add to the fun.Cloris Leachman has her funniest role since Young Frankenstein.Like the other reviews, I too am suprised this classic comedy has never been released on DVD.This has caused the few VHS copies left to become quite expensive, and that's if you can even find it avaliable on VHS.It can only be purchased used right now.I highly recommend the movie, but you'll need some luck finding a copy of it anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC!
How this movie hasn't made it to DVD is beyond me.I saw this when it first appeared in the theaters and I've been watching it since it was released.Liz Torres - "You stole an ostrich?" - to Ruth Gordon's "I Pearl Harbored the mothers" and Richard Mulligan's "Brp, Brp, Brp" as he danced his way along the hall wrapped in gauze!I try not to play it too too often as I don't want to wear it out....but it's such a great feel good movie. And you just want to smack Georgie and Mildred. If you haven't seen it - rent it.If you can BUY IT! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Interpretation of Irving's Tale
Ahh - the perfect Halloween film!Better than many of the old classics. This is Tim Burton at his best.As a child, I loved the gothic tale of the Headless Horseman - and this rendition never fails to ring the bell.Johnny Depp is well cast as the somewhat nervous, eccentric, but always ernest Ichabod Crane.Christina Ricci is beautiful and Christopher Walken is perfect as the Horseman. While the film is gory - after all there are lots of heads being lopped off - it's not really scary.I wouldn't recommend it for children under the age of 12 however - especially those with overactive imaginations. The old animated Disney version is better suited for the little ones.
5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining... a real Halloween delight !
"Sleepy Hollow" Has just the right amount of everything to make it quite a memorable movie. The atmosphere that Sleepy Hollow portrays makes this movie
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spooky Flick for the Fall Season!
Let me state right off that, although I respect Burton as a great filmmaker, I'm not a fan of his films; they usually strike me as eminent examples of style over substance (which, in a sense, isn't his fault since he's not usually the writer). Plus the films he usually picks to direct simply aren't my cup of java (for instance, I have no plans to catch "Edward Scissorhands" anytime soon). But who can deny his great visual talants? This guy knows how to make a film LOOK good, that's for sure.

Editorial Review

It's hard to know who thought it would be a good idea to make a live-action version of Disney's animated classic. The one bright notion anyone had was casting Glenn Close as Disney über-villainess Cruella de Vil; her flashing eyes and angular features are a perfect match and do credit to what is one of the most indelible animated characters Disney has ever created. The story remains essentially the same, focusing on Cruella's plot to kidnap the puppies of a young married couple (Jeff Daniels and Jolie Richardson) and make them into a coat. But the dreaded John Hughes, who wrote this script, fills it with sadistic slapstick and far too few genuine laughs. The human actors work hard, but to little avail; thankfully, there's a passel of puppies to regularly steal scenes when the going gets dreary--although there are only so many laughs to be had from inappropriate dog puddles. 5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite movie of all time!
101 Dalmatians is simply my favorite movie of all time. Funny plot and loveable charcthers and great rated G horror movie. I was very young when I saw "101 Dalmatians" in 1996 and I was So scared of Cruella but, that is sort of a good thing because Glenn Close's proformance is so great and that is what I look for in a movie. Almost 10 years later, "Dalmatians" is still fresh and great. One thing I have a problem with is the price for the DVD. Even though I love this movie, Im not going to pay that price. Great movie way awful DVD price.
4-0 out of 5 stars Family Funny
In 1996, Disney remade the animated classic "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" into a live-action movie. The plot was kept very similar to the original, with enough variation from the original to keep the plot fresh.I found this version to be enjoyable and sufficiently family friendly that I have enjoyed watching it more than once.
