A Great Aid to Spiritual Enlightenment!
In the early 1970s I began having spontaneous, conscious "out-of-body" experiences.As they progressed, I struggled to learn how to induce the experiences ... as well as being able to exercise some control over them.I read every book on "out-of-body' experiences that I could get my hands on. Then came the film "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"! I was utterely captivated!I identified with the character of Jonathan from the begining of the story to end. I related his personal struggles to my own ... his love of "flight" and his determination to prove that there is more to life than what "meets the eye".
30+ years later, I'm still moved by it
It haunted me as a child of nine years when my mother took me to see it on its original theatrical release. It inspires me today as an adult. Why is this not out on DVD?!!!

Grew up loving it
Until this afternoon, I did not realize just how old this wonderful movie is.Not that it matters that it's older than I am.I grew up watching this and was wondering if it would be possible to replace that old tape if there ever were reason.This film and the soundtrack LP have inspired me a great many times over the years.I will echo some others here in saying that if you watch this film the same as you would watch most feature films today, you'll miss out.You have to be able to just sit back and relax with it.Pay attention to what's going on, and what Johnathan is actually experiencing.If I could walk into a brick and mortar store and see this video on the shelf in any format, I'd probably go into debt buying 5 copies.I love this hard to find film.Just to make sure I never have to worry about losing it forever. ... Barnabas Collins Has Risen

GREAT!!!
I used to watch the soap opera, then I saw this film.I loved them both.

Darker than "Dark"
"House of Dark Shadows" is one of my all-time favorite horror movies, and I've always been a fan of the TV series.The movie, though, is fairly gory and much darker than the series had ever been. It was made 35 years ago, but it still scares me when I watch it!Some of the best scenes include Willie Loomis releasing Barnabas from his coffin, and the film's climax involving Barnabas, Maggie Evans, Jeff Clark and Willie.

The wonderful Leslie Caron stars in this Oscar-winning musical fable with a touch of the bizarre. Caron plays Lili, a recently orphaned waif hopelessly in love with a carnival magician. Mel Ferrer plays Paul, a gruff puppeteer who can express his softer side only through his puppets. Sound weird? It is. Caron's performance is lovely. She is, as always, a graceful dancer, but she is also able to pull off the much more difficult task of making Lili pure and innocent without being icky--shetalks to Paul's puppets with complete conviction. Wonderful!
I could tell you all about this wonderful movie, but other reviewers have done such a great job.Just let me add one tidbit--the end contains what is probably the most hilarious screen kiss in history (although I'm sure it was meant to seem passionate).

Give That Girl A Contract
How hard can it be to find a film with elements of homelessness, unemployment, despair, suicidal thoughts, thievery, feigned affection, disability and self-pity? Not very hard you say. But in a G-rated film barely eighty minutes long?
Career High for Caron, Ferrer, and -- Zsa Zsa
Charles Walters is another, like George Sidney, another incredibly talented director whose 1950s work has been for too long overshadowed by his MGM competitors Cukor, Donen and Minnelli.Walters isn't nearly as flashy as these guys, but where it counts, he's got it all, and as a choreographer, he can design dance films in a way that eluded these other non-dancers.LILI isn't a musical per se, though years later it inspired the memorable Bob Merrill score for CARNIVAL, but it has more than enough music to qualify it as the kind of picture you leave the theater whistling the tunes from.And in Leslie Caron they found the right blend of wistfulness and innocence; even her mouth looks bruised, but her eyes light up whenever she sees her darling puppets.

Paul Newman directed this poetic, sunlight- and memory-drenched film version of Tennessee Williams's classic memory play. The casting is surprisingly adept, considering that several of the performers would seem to be too old for their roles. John Malkovich plays Williams's stand-in, Tom Wingfield, a dreamer who lives with his domineering mother Amanda (a luminous Joanne Woodward) and his fragile, limping sister Laura (Karen Allen). Mom wants nothing more than to marry off shy-flower Laura and keeps bugging Tom to bring home a guy. So he corrals coworker James Naughton for an evening--and Amanda treats it as though Naughton's signed up for the nuptial short-course. Woodward is alternately touching and harridan-like as this smothering mother who means well, while Malkovich is perfect as the would-be writer longing to break free. SUPERB!!! When will it be available on DVD?
This is the best most intelligent version of St. Tennessee's GLASS MENAGERIE I've ever seen!There is great humor and tenderness in this version, alonside the heartbreak.The direction by Paul Newman is subtle and insightful, the artful cinematography by the great Michael Ballhaus gives every scene layers and layers of meaning, and the acting is astounding.John Malkovich's Tom is achingly brilliant (the semi-literate lump Christian Slater playing Tom/Tennessee on Broadway was absurd) and bursting with resentment and anger and creative potential; Joanne Woodward perfectly inhabits mother Amanda's well-meaning but at times smothering narcissistic love and sing-song nagging and melancholic nostalgia; and then the revelation is Karen Allen (who knew?) whose wounded resigned Laura cannot achieve her mother's ambitions or her brother's cultural curiousity, but who compassionately loves these two human volcanos despite everything.
Deeply moving---unquestionably the best film version.
The depth of feeling manifested in the acting on display here easily trumps both the (wildly miscast)Gertrude Lawrence and the (vastly overrated) Katherine Hepburn versions of this celebrated play.

An Improved -But Still Flawed - FIlm
I actually liked "Attack Of The Clones," but it's despite the important plot points included in it's story.

Why does Obi-Wan Kenobi look like Jesus Christ?
Picking up 10 years later, Anakin Skywalker is no longer an adorable if stoic little kid but now a tall, gangly, jerky young man (Hayden Christensen) with a tendency to whine and bitch about stuff for no apparent reason (takes things way too personally he does). Well, him and his master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) are assigned to protect former queen turned senator Padme (Natalie Portman) after ten years apart from an assassin. This job eventually leads to Obi-Wan being separated from Anakin while he investigates the assassin who happens to be involved with a cloning conspiracy and this later leads him to a renegade Jedi master played by Christopher Lee. Guess what? Anakin still has the hots for Padme and whilst Obi-Wan is away Anakin would like nothing better than to strip her naked and get her in the sack. The future Darth Vader also has a nightmare about his mom's death back on Tatioone and he FINALLY goes to rescue her but by the time he gets there she's already dead so he goes and kills the cannibal Sand People who killed her.

excellent film of a great play
If you can believe it, the first play I was ever in was The Crucible, when I had just finished sixth grade.We had a rather progressive director for the YMCA summer drama workshop.Her philosophy was that this was not theatre for children, but theatre by children and we did the last couple of scenes of this great play.I got to play Judge Danforth and my little brother was the Reverend Mr. Hale.I doubt any of our cast fully understood the play's ramifications then, but some of us understood enough to learn more, to read the entire play, and to try out for more plays when the chance came.
Disturbing and well made
I'm not sure why I ordered this movie, given that usually I don't like too much suspence, but maybe the historical aspect of it drew me. In any event, I'm happy I've ordered it--it is very well made, the acting is unnervingly convincing, and the story makes one be VERY grateful for not living in that village at that time! The analogy to present time abuse of power, mass histerias and tendency for 'witch hunting' (though no longer in the literal sense, still very much in other finger-pointing-to-save-one's-own-face and terrorizing others to join or else...as well as pompous know-it-alls) is eerie. Ideas and locations change, but the human flock-factor seems to be an ever present enemy...
Not the definitive version, but ultimately moving and powerful
The Crucible is considerably simplified from the play. Despite Arthur Miller handling the adaptation himself, so much of the historical detail and motivation for the witchhunts is dropped to get the narrative moving faster that at the end of the day the whole thing seems to have been reduced to a simple case of a woman spurned and a bad case of mass hysteria. Some awkward performances in the first half don't help either - Bruce Davison is shrilly ineffective, Daniel Day Lewis still seems to be doing Hawkeye, Joan Allen does her serious face again and the jury's still out on whether Winona Ryder is giving a convincing performance as an unconvincing liar or and unconvincing performance as a convincing liar. Yet the strength of the material shines through and suddenly, by the halfway point, you suddenly realise that you are completely gripped by it and that most of the performances have improved immeasurably once Paul Scofield has arrived to up the ante. Indeed, by the end the piece is genuinely tragic and moving (that said, I still maintain that the real hero of the piece is not John Proctor but Pastor Hale - the only character to realise his terrible error and to have the courage to publicly try to remedy it, however hopelessly). Excellent supporting performances from Karron Graves and, surprisingly, George Gaynes, although the houses seem a little too large for Puritan stock. Definitely a film of two halves, but worth seeing for the sheer power of the latter half.

Christmas Classic!!
This movie has become one of my holiday favorites!

The burglars were funny and goofy.But, they were a bit too crazy.Why?Because when they tripped on ice, and stepped on christmas ornaments is was too violent.That's why I only gave it three stars.

The movie itself is pretty good, well-organized with many distinctive and innovative plots. but the DVD transfer has serious problem. Let me tell you something, widescreen 1.85:1 is actually 1:33:1 (Black matte top and bottom makes it 1:33) If you play it on widescreen TV (not on computer), you'll probably get very small widescreen on the middle of the screen. ... gary cole shines as custer in t.v. 's version of "dances with wolves"

Loved the movie,but how much longer for the DVD?
Despite being a made for TV flick, this is my fav Little Big Horn movie.I don't know why it takes what feels like forever to reprint VHS versions to DVD whith all the high-tech out there, but like Zulu Dawn, another of my favorite war flicks, it seems that the conversion of celluloid to digital is as slow as molasses in January (that's January in Norther Virginia, and baby, it get's cold here!).I found the acting of all the characters excellent, the storyline, wonderful, the action super, and the perspective from both sides, the red man and the white man, excellent, and the atmosphere convincing, although there is not much grit to the era in the movie.Just stop farting around and get me a DVD version and make me a very happy fan.

"son of the morning star" is a true epic
this is t.v.'s take at the boxoffic and oscar power of "dances with wolves" and it is really the best thing t.v. has done next to "lonesome dove". gary cole is just perfect as the bold,ego manic, loving husband, and a commanding officer no one would want. rodney grant of "dances with wolves" is also great as crazy horse and the battle is the center piece of this fine look at the little big horn from both sides and really brings home the sadness of what followed for both sides. this belongs on dvd, i hope it is soon. but if a tape is what it takes to see this movie then buy it you will love it ... Girl meets Guy
A love story like no other. The girl and boy meet, and its magic!
One can only hope...
Sometimes there are movies that are corny and pointless , this might be that movie BUT I have to say it's my GULITY PLEASURE, as much of the 80's was about the good girl with the bad guy or the poor girl with the rich guy, I love 80's films they are nostalgic, or maybe more like a fresh of breath air, no gimmicks, no special effects and might not be corny or pointless after all. So one can only hope of a DVD Release soon!

Why isn't this on DVD?
I love, love, love this movie.It is a wonderful star-crossed lovers story, with some terrific secondary characters (D.B. Sweeney with the pack of cigarettes rolled up in his sleeve makes me laugh every time, as does the Mapmaker's "Radcliffe-Radish" explanation).But WHY hasn't this been released on DVD?If "Tuff Turf" is on DVD, "Fire With Fire" absolutely should be too. ... My three year old son thinks it is too scary
Well, this is cute.I like it.But my three year old son (who normally likes Elmo and who normally like Halloween) is scared to watch it.He doesn't want me to play it--he asks for Dora's Halloween instead.

Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.

The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

American Pastoral: captures the spirit of McCullers' poetic study of loneliness
No, it's not the novel, which is a multi-plotted study of four characters whose lives are symmetrically developed and eventually tied together like the themes in a sonata, all of them linked by their attraction to a deaf-mute as an alternative to a profound sense of futility, despair and, above all, loneliness felt by each of the four.The ultimate irony is that the only character who affords the others a solace from their alienation is himself the most isolated and miserable character in the story, denied even an illusory companionship when his only friend dies.
A Message To All Of Us
This is, as promoted, simply a nice story about a really good guy: a deaf mute who helps some people and, in the end, desperately needed someone to help him.
A movie you will probally want to see agian.

Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 multiple-Oscar winner (including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley) is an engrossing, reverential look at the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, who introduced the doctrine of nonviolent resistance to the colonized people of India and who ultimately gained the nation its independence. Kingsley is magnificent as Gandhi as he changes over the course of the three-hour film from an insignificant lawyer to an international leader and symbol. Strong on history (the historic division between India and Pakistan, still a huge problem today, can be seen in its formative stages here) as well as character and ideas, this is a fine film. A total waste of time and money - Its a movie full of lies
I watched this movie and found nothing but bundles of lies. He did his best not to divide India and it was all Jinnah who divided and founded Pakistan. Gandhi was totally against it.
Cinematic Masterpiece Overviewing the Long Complex Life of an International Hero
Lord Attenborough sought out to offer a sampling of the most well known and farthest reaching events, while interjecting events little known in Gandhi's personal life. The beginning disclosure makes clear that there was no possible way, in the time allowed, to tell all that could be told about the man.This film introduces us to the essence and primary thoughts of Mohandas K. Gandhi and explores the patience and diligence of non-violent philosophy.
A movie that shows us there is hope for humanity
We are not perfect, but if we decide to do better than what has been the norm for humanity, we can. Gandhi chose to be a better man than he was and through his will power, guided but not blinded by his convictions, he embarked on a life that led him to challenge accepted notions on many aspects of our lives. He was creative, asking questions others did not ask and inventing answers others did not offer, with respect to problems we still face. And then he lived by what he discovered. He did not let his fears control him, but rather experimented with his own life to try out those answers. He sought the "truth" and tried to live by it. Above all, he tried to be honest with himself and with others. He tried not to inflict suffering, while also not allowing it to be accepted.

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. Read more
