5-0 out of 5 stars A Sober Mel Gibson delivers an excellent performance
Very good acting and a fantastic script put this movie at the top of the list of must see movies of this decade.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hotch Potch
Not since "Sixth Sense", with the most obvious and telegraphed twist, have I seen a bigger load of hooey. This guys inability to tell a story without glaringly obvious chasms in the plot is only equalled by his obviously tenuous grasp of Christian theology and doctrine.. a bit like an O'level pupil writing a thesis on nuclear fission. The mere concept of this plot, using an alien invasion as proof of Gods existence, flys in the face of the most fundamental of christian tenets.. Crikey, and all this from an agnostic..

5-0 out of 5 stars Signs is One of Our Favorite Films
Not only does the movie Signs offer a wonderfully different kind of alien/ufo tale, but its characters are very likable and the story is about much more than aliens from another planet. The story's true question is this: does everything just happen by chance, or is God caring for His children in ways they simply cannot understand? Signs is the story of hope lost, faith put aside because of intense pain and grief, and how one man's relationship with God affects the lives of those around him. We were amazed by how truly moving this film is, as well as how humorous it can be, and we were impressed with the acting of all the cast. Does everything just happen by chance, or is God caring for His children in ways they simply cannot understand? ... Read more

Editorial Review

The short life and passionate music of romantic composer Frédéric Chopin provide the foundations for this 1945 drama, which proved influential in its gaudy, undeniably watchable formula of historical exaggeration and shrewdly simplified motives for its principals. In an Oscar-nominated performance, Cornel Wilde presents the Polish native as a passionate nationalist driven by his love of his native country and his hatred of its czarist regime, a thematic focus that can be forgiven in light of the political backdrop at the time of the production.Already a prodigy in his native land, where he's mentored by a shamelessly scenery-chewing Paul Muni as Professor Elsner, Chopin flees to Paris where his flashing eyes, dark nimbus of curls, and florid technique earn him stardom, while his involvement with the writer George Sand (a beautiful Merle Oberon, even when draped in then-provocatively masculine garb) introduces a romantic crescendo.Still, the tortured pianist-composer pines for his homeland, frets about its political fate, and begins to wither under the rigors of his new career as ur-superstar; in a typically over-the-top but riveting image, we see drops of blood spatter across the keyboard as he thunders through a recital, gallantly ignoring his failing health to spread his music and, by extension, awareness of Poland's fate.Numerous subsequent musical dramas (including two more Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Several Moments to remember.
This is the earliest movie rendering of the Chopin/Sand affair I have seen to date. However, in this, Sand is more of an impediment to what Chopin must do--raise funds for his Polish rebel friends. This is something that has been neglected to a degree, in the other two movies I have seen on this subject (Impromptu, Desire for Love). Both acknowledge his Polish-ness and one does even show his rushed departure from his beloved homeland.
5-0 out of 5 stars A SONG THAT I'LL CERTAINLY ALWAYS REMEMBER
A few days ago, thanks to Amazon and a kind gentleman named Ernest who had one to sell, I FINALLY became the proud owner of A Song to Remember on VHS - a little more than 56 years after I saw the actual movie. They say if something's good enough to want, it's good enough to wait for, and this is certainly true where this sublime movie and most treasured memory of my childhood is concerned. In 1946, at the age of 9, my well meaning parents (back home in Wales, U.K.) took me to see this movie, without telling me that their main reason was 'the hope that it would encourage me to put more effort in to my piano lessons'.To their dismay, they soon discovered that, in that respect, they had failed miserably because - after seeing this movie and being introduced to the life and beautiful music of Frederic Chopin, through the incredible combination of Cornel Wilde's good looks (and excellent acting) and the superb performance of the music itself by Jose Iturbi, I promptly came to the conclusion that if I couldn't play that well, then I didn't want to play at all. Not long afterwards, my long suffering piano teacher was relieved (in every sense of the word) of her duties. But from the moment I sat enraptured through that movie, I fell in love with Chopin and his music and made the vow that 'when I grow up, I'm going to go to Poland and listen to a Chopin recital in the country where it all began'.More than forty years later (and having moved to Canada in the meantime) I achieved that ambition and what a joy it was to hear this wonderful music played by a leading exponent of Chopin's music from the Warsaw Conservatory. My other ambition was to somehow 'acquire' this memorable movie for myself. But I found that to be easier said than done, as all my enquiries came up with an 'out of print' response. Then just over a week ago, I saw that Amazon did indeed have one for sale - 'used'. I knew it was a risk to fork out money for a product that I couldn't even be sure was in great condition. But I wanted this movie so much, that I 'boughtit' immediately, before anyone else could pounce on it.My movie arrived a few days later, just in time for it to be 'a special birthday gift to myself'.Today was my birthday and one of the biggest treats of my day was to curl up in comfort and watch A Song to Remember in my own home at long last.Oh what memories watching it brought back, and what joy is gave me to finally have this wonderful movie in my possession to play and watch for ever more. I am also happy to say that this 'used' tape turned out to be in superb condition, with its picture and sound as good as new. This is one happy movie owner and my thanks to Amazon and Ernest for finally making it possible for me to fulfil a lifelong dream. It means more to me than you would ever imagine!A Song to Remember made it a Birthday to Remember too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent And Gritty Crime Drama!
With so many reviews already posted here on amazon, I really don't think there is any more that I could add, other than to say this is an amazing crime-thriller. From the very beginning, to the very end this is the quintessential mob film of all time. The story of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) has already been discussed, I would just like to add that if there is anyone who has not seen this classic, do so. More importantly, it belongs in your DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars These are working guys, living it up and "Earning" at all costs.
Scorcese & Pileggi's masterpiece on the life of Henry Hill as a Brooklyn NY mob wise-guy is great film. While not my favorite Martin Scorsese movie it is a stunning achievement, and one of his very best movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best film of the 90's
GoodFellas is Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, following the life of a gangster named Henry Hill. It charts his way up from working at a mob-controlled cabstand to becoming a member of the gang, and eventually turning to the witness protection program to save his life. The movie is full of unforgettable moments, particularly the famous "Do you think I'm funny" scene. Joe Pesci steals every scene he's in as the murderous psycopath Tommy, and rightfully won the best supporting actor Oscar. This movie contains what may be the best movie sequence ever made: Henry, while high on cocaine, driving around town running a mixture of normal and mob errands (e.g. In narration, he says: I had to stop by Sandy's place to mix the cocaine then get home and check the tommato sauce for dinner...) while being followed by a helicopter. The scene is shot extremely haphazardly, making you feel as though your'e in Henry's place. This movie's greatness cannot be expressed in words; you have to see it for yourself. Also recommended: Miller's Crossing, Casino, Taxi Driver, and The Godfather. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Lucy Volume 1
This tape is a great with 5 of the top 10 episodes.5-0 out of 5 stars Vitameatavegamin, Grape Stomping, Harpo Marx and more!
Volume 1 of the "Best of 'I Love Lucy'" starts off with the classic "Lucy Does a TV Commercial" (Episode #30, May 5, 1952), Ricky is set to host a TV variety show and Lucy wants to do a live commercial for (all together now) Vitameatavegamin. Although she fails to win Ricky's support after staging a mock show inside their television set, Lucy arranges to get the gig anyhow. She starts off great, but the problem is that Vitameatavegamin contains 23% alcohol and with each rehearsal Lucy gets progressively drunker and funnier. Lucille Ball considered this the best bit, and one of the hardest, she ever did.Next we have the wonderful grape vat scene from "Lucy's Italian Movie" (Episode #150, April 16, 1956). The Ricardos are in Europe when an Italian movie producer tells Lucy that he wants her in his new film, "Grapola Pungente." Finding out the title translates as "bitter grapes," Lucy takes this literally and heads for the nearest vineyard where she has a memorable encounter with Teresa Tirelli stomping grapes in a vat.So right off the start, you have TWO of the THREE funniest Lucy routines (and the Candy Factory sketch is on Volume 2)!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall Best film version of JANE EYRE
I've been having a "Jane Eyre-athon."There are many good versions of this gothic story of the fight between worldliness and virtue. Many have one really outstanding element, but this version, with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine remains overall the best.Like most, it eliminates much of the second half of the book, which is the really important part for Bronte, who is one of the finest religious thinkers of her age. There are so many bests in this version, it will always be hard to top for getting Bronte right.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Adaptation
I have loved this film since I was a teenager. While, as many others have said, this film version does not match the story in the book EXACTLY, it does, however, invoke the spirit of the work in such a way that it captures the essence of the story without being too long and plodding.I think Orson Welles was magnificent as Edward Fairfax Rochester, tortured lord and master of Fairfield. His resonant speaking voice and his dark, brooding features bring to life on film the Mr. Rochester that I saw in my mind upon first reading the novel. To those who may say Mr. Welles was "too ugly to look at" please remember that Edward Rochester was described as an ugly man.His beauty lies in the strengh of his soul and the strength o his love for Jane. And to those who say Joan Fontaine was too pretty to play Jane let me say this, both pretty and plain are in the eye of the beholder.Compared to the glittering beauties of Hollywood in that era some may say that Ms. Fontaine was just as plain as Jane Eyre was compared to the rich and well dressed daughters of the aristocracy thet Mr. Rochester was wont to socialize with. All in all, I still feel that this is a superb adaptation of a superb classic novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Janet!
We think this version is quite good, but could be improved, because they missed out, or reararanged the order of important scenes!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but do not ask for the impossible
I will try not to repeat what other reveiwers have said, so I will be short about all the qualities of this miniseries: excellent actors, engrossing storyline, excellent reconstruction of the siege as it happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Although I just viewed the abridged version, I found it highly suspenseful and riveting. Otool and Strauss were exceptional--that's what made the drama so compelling. Each man was intensely resolved to achieve his goal, and neither would surrender to the other. Also, each hero was extremely human--sensitive and thoughtful--despite the pluck and resolve each had.
5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Masada Mini-series Available on 4 VHS!!
I bought my copy of the miniseries, MASADA. I just looked and I saw one copy from there. When I bought mine, I got it, factory sealed, from a seller called buy.com. I went to buy.com website and the movie is on back order but, hey, you've waited this long, right? I also see that www.moviesunlimited.com has it for sale; you will need: (item # 072787).I am looking to get mine put on DVD to preserve the video. I, too, remember watching it as a child and the indelible etching it left on my memory. I have watched all 394 minutes again as an adult and it is as huge and glorious as I remember it. I didn't even know an expurgated version exists - I can not imagine cutting even a minute from this perfect epic. It would be like cutting The "10 Commandments" or Homer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous Musical
"The Phantom of the Opera" may not be my new favorite movie, but it's certainly one of the most sensually appealing. It succeeds in being an appealing musical, romance, mystery, and period piece all at once.Everything in the movie is a treat for the eyes and the ears, from the rich period sets and costumes to the Andrew Lloyd Webber songs to the gorgeous cast members.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I love this movie! The scenes like the first one where it goes to color is beautiful. Of course, I'm very suprised about something: the fact that some adults don't even know why his hair changes when his mask is taken off!!(No offense to them). So, why does this happen? The black hair is a WIG!!! Look closely and you'll realize that before he goes out in that climatic scene, he checks his hair; correct me, WIG. When Christine takes off his mask, his hair literallycomes off as a WIG. I love the music, too, especially the phantom of the opera song (The phantom of the opera is there/inside my mind).Watch it!!!!! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Really not enough stars for this DVD
Someone, quite recently, as well as long ago, said that the film version of the musical was dead. If memory serves, they said it died with "Hello Dolly" or some such work. Anyone who believes that will need to watch "Phantom: on DVD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Singing in the Rain -most excelent
This movie entertains over and over again. The quality of the film on the dvd is great. The extra's on the dvd are well worth it.If you love Gene Kelly this is one you will really treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing movie, even more amazing extras!
This film, I think, can be considered to be the greatest musical of all time. I just LOOOVED it! Gene Kelly's magic feet dance to catchy Jazz-Age tunes, there are colorful musical numers, and superb comedy. What more could you ask for? And I'm glad it's finally out on a 2-disc special edition, with great special features. I loved the documentaries on disc 2, but what I REALLY LIKED about the extras were the musical clips from the movies where the songs originated! I didn't know about Freed/Brown songs then, I was suprised to find out that the movie was based on all of those songs from the early talkies. Those clips just changed my life. I bought most of the movies they were excerpted from. Now I know who Eleanor Powell is, I know who Robert Taylor is, and I'm totally hooked on their films! I've seen practically all of Eleanor Powell's movies! I mostly love about the extras is the "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin'" clip. The first time I saw it, I was just dazed, and I was wondering who the heck Robert Taylor and June Knight were. I thought that musical number was the most beautiful and most escapist and most romantic number I'd ever seen in my life. Taylor and Knight make a LOVELY looking couple. Oh, and I've also seen 2 of June Knight's few films. So I bought Broadway Melody of 1936. Now, it's my favorite movie. If you don't see that you're missin' out big time. This movie, Singin' in the Rain started movie collecting which consists of over a 100 DVDs and rare VHSs. So I just want to say that Singin' in the Rain is one of my favorite movies of all time, and thank God for it, or else I'd never have liked musicals and old movies in the first place. P.S. The song "I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' really should've been a big production musical number in Singin' in the Rain. Bet it would've turned out wonderful, because that's such a great song, maybe even better than the title tune! ... Read more

These books are great and the movie made a joke out of them. Visser 3 looks like a blue hair ball and theirs NO ACTION!

1-0 out of 5 stars A shame to the name Animorph
This like its predeseres is an insult to the magical books. The books were great this wasn't. Gone is the intense action and fights the book described. Now we get garbage sneaking around. The andalites are very fake and are never showen all at once. No taxxons at all. The hork bajar just stand there. Gone is the witty smart acting of the books replaced by total garbage. Read the books and stay away from this.

This is the best of the 4 movies! The 3 episodes are The Capture Parts 1 and 2 and Not My Problem. In the Capture Part 1 The animorphs discover the yeerks are in charge of a health clinic where the governor will receive a treatment and if the Yeerk's plan is successful he will be a human-controller.He is also running for president! Jake falls into the Yeerk Pool and becomes a controller. In the Capture Part 2 Ax figures out that Jake is a human-controller.Jake keeps reassuring the animorphs that he is not and they figure they must lock him up for 3 days to be sure.On the thrid day Jake waits for Rachel (who is guarding him) to fall asleep. He then morphs to dog and escapes the barn undetected (or so he thinks). He leads the animorphs to a new entrance to the Yeerk Pool.He finds out that his friends knew he escaped since Rachel had only been pretending. The Yeerk dies and the Animorphs meet at the mall where Jake calls tom disgusing his voice telling him not to give up.In Not My Problem Jake has had enough between fighting Yeerks and keeping up with his schoolwork. He wishes he never met the Elfangor and the Ellimist grants his wish. Then durind their new lives Tobias (who is the only animorph) tells Rachel about the Yeerk threat. At 1st she thinks he's nuts.Later they all go to a Sharing meeting where Tobias is caught sneeking around. It is then revealed that Jake is a controller. After school Tobias calls Rachel and asks her to meet him at the Spider Club (the place where the Sharing meeting was held).Jake follows her and a lion saves her from Jake. The lion turns out to be Tobias. He and Rachel tie Jake up and then Jake askshim about the "andalite" that attacks him.It turns out that Rachel has been a controller since the previous night and then she tells Jake everything.Tobias tries to escape but Tom, Cassie, Marco, and 2 punks cut off his escape. He is captured and Visser 3 comes in and promotes Jake to Visser 10.Jake tries to infest Tobias but fails when the real Jake fights back.Jake is then in his room back in a world where Tobias is still a hawk, the animorphs exist and none of them are controllers. Was it a dream or real? All in all this is a great movie. ... Yes the movie is great but please tell me about the DVD ! How's the quality, are there deleted scene's ,any bonus material ? I think there are about 115 reviews about the movie but I would like more info about the DVD itself!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest films ever.
Two friends, Stan and Billy, take a road trip down south but run into trouble when they are mistakenly arrested for murder in Alabama. The hapless youngsters have no money to hire an attorney but Billy's cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci) is a lawyer so they call on him to help. What they don't realise is that Vinny took 6 attempts to pass his legal exams and, what's more, has no courtroom experience to speak of. What follows is none stop humour and 'laugh aloud' moments as the brash New Yorker sweeps into the hick town accompanied by his strident girlfriend, Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei).
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Bold Comedy with Punch
This movie is funny and by being so bold in so many ways is refreshing. It presents realistic characters without worrying about offending people by presenting sterotypes. It takes the time to develope the story effectively without boring the audience. It is a long movie but it moves at a great and effective pace.

It's hard to imagine a finer Don Quixote than Peter O'Toole, who's spent most of his career with a slightly mad, dreaming look in his marvelous eyes. O'Toole's suitability for the role is tested by the Broadway treatment of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
I love Miguel Cervantes Story telling of Don Quiotxe De la Mancha. This has great songs. Rent is another one of my favorite musical turned movies but they are hardly alike. Rent is about the bohemian village, man of la mancha is about early spanish inquisition, but i do beilive they have a small relation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Story was good, acting good, singing??? What singing?
Sorry, if one is casting for a MUSICAL movie, one should actually cast actors who can SING, not just actors who have big names. Sophia Loren couldn't carry a tune to save her life.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Heaven and Dulciena!
This movie does an excellent job of portraying both Don Quixote and his author Cervantes who wrote this masterpiece while in prison. On top of all that, its a musical/comedy of epic proportions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Yeaaa! I found it!
On a June evening in 1968 I was awakened by my dad, a Marine Raider and one of the Chosen Few, at ten o'clock PM, that's 2200, to watch The DI... five hours before I was to report to the Armed Forces Induction Center, Oakland, Calif. I won't ever forget that movie session with my dad, and as one other person commented, ya never forget your DIs, mine were SSgt Gonzales, SSgt Rogers, and Cpl Sexton.
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding work, semper fI
All I can say is amen to the rest of the reviews on this great movie!! and Agree wholeheartly to the question raised by almost everyone, "Why hasn't this movie as well as a few others been released on DVD" I am also a marine VET, the attention to detail to this movie made so long ago "1957 I believe" is superb for the time it was released. I have a vhs copy and only wish I could get it on DVD also.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST MILITARY MOVIE OF ALL TIME

4-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense but still worth to watch!
Music is by Cole Porter, directed by Vincente Minnelli, and staring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. That sounds like promised musical to be impressed. However it didn't seem to get the result as expected.
2-0 out of 5 stars I'm the only one who didn't care for it.
Gene Kelly was very good in it, and it did have one very good musical number with Kelly, that I saved, after I recorded it from Turner Classic Movies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Pirate Should Be On DVD!
The Pirate starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly is a wonderful musical and the singing and dancing by the two leads is excellent and I wonder why this movie hasn't been put on DVD yet and I think it's about time it got the DVD treatment! I have this movie on video but the tape is in really bad condition with several scenes that are so worn out they are unwatchable so a DVD would be very appreciated! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Today I REJOICE!I have been waiting for years to hear the news that "TAP" starring the GREATS Sammy Davis, Jr. and Gregory Hines would be released on dvd.The date is August 29, 2006 so get ready! This movie is tap dance history! Great tap dancers old and young join forces to bring to the screen a celluloid history lesson for those who care to be educated. This is one of my favorite movies and while I haven't been able to watch it since Gregory's passing in August, 2003, I plan to celebrate on the release date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, TAP is coming on August 29, 2006!!
We can now rejoice!Gregory Hines in all his glory is finally being released and will be out on August 29, 2006.
