1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!!
This movie is SO bad!! This is a PRIME example of cheezy low budget 80's teen ... films. I mean I really have never seen acting this bad. Rent it and I can say you will laugh, but only at the stupidity of the acting, writing, jokes, the music, and it goes on. There are SO many loose ends in the film, it's just crazy. It's bad writing at it's worst. I just cant believe teens in 1989 would have liked this movie or thought it was funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, tragic, depressing -- and singularly fascinating
I really don't know what to make of this film. When you first start watching Crumb, you wonder why anyone would ever want to watch something this odd, but after about twenty minutes you realize that you couldn't stop watching it if you wanted to - and you don't want to.The world of Robert Crumb, a pioneer in the world of underground comics, is as disturbing as it is fascinating - and that is exactly what Crumb is, a documentary about the life of this man and his family. It gives you a disarmingly honest look inside the man's mind, and I'm not sure anyone can really describe what we discover. In all honesty, I had never heard of Robert Crumb nor seen any of his work (although Fritz the Cat does ring a bell) before - that work is eye-opening to say the least, and you get to see a lot of it during the documentary.Much of it is misogynistic and arguably racist, so I'm sure Crumb fans and anti-fans alike will be most interested in this artist's direct insight into his work.Crumb is a compulsive artist who draws almost constantly, and one gets the sense that it is the only thing keeping him from crossing a line into madness.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Portrait of Mental Illness.
Although with this statement I am not referring to the principal subject of the documentary. Robert Crumb is a man who exhibits the ability to work and love so one would have to say, despite his prevalent eccentricities, he is a functional adult. The same cannot be said about his two brothers who are extensively interviewed here. They would not seem to have been an obvious choice as Crumb does not have a great deal to do with his family anymore. Both of his brothers are deeply depressed and mentally ill. They are a sad sight to see. Crumb's mother is also in bad shape and it is implied that she doesn't like to leave the house for any reason. Hyper-sexuality seems to be a trait running through their family as one brother fantasized about molesting boys while the other was actually arrested for molesting women. The Crumb family is at times repulsive but do offer up exceptional insight into the ways of the imbalanced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Unpolished, yet entertaining and compelling.
As a graphic designer and sometimes-comic artist, I have always been drawn to R. Crumb's work. Although many find R's art for the most part obscene or bigoted, I am quite drawn to his work and try to look at some of his more controversial pieces in the context of social, political and personal conditions. This documentary has certainly helped to further my understanding of 'R' the person, and should not be missed by those wanting to learn more about the man behind the art.

3-0 out of 5 stars At Least Give It A Chance
Alright. Granted, this movie is not exactly an over the boards smash. That said, it really isn't so bad. To be sure, there are a lot of silly moments, but remember, it's a comedy. The story starts by introducing us to a detective agency that is not doing so well. John Larroquette plays Willis, who may seem obnoxious and annoying. However, as we grow to know him, we start to understand his frustrations. He left the Boston Police Force on less than good terms, and (to say the least) he has to deal with his less than normal partners. Preston (Stuart Pankin) is a nice enough guy, but his fascination with scientific aspects of situations often distracts him from performing at optimal levels. The other partner (Bobby) has seemingly boundless psychic abilities. (Not only can he read thoughts, but he has the power of mind over matter.) What prevents Bobby from being an invincible ally is that his eccentricities often get in the way of his duties and cause less than desirable consequences. (As we see more of this, we can understand the frustrations of Willis.) Bobby's spiritual guide (Murray) also offers some laughs, but he is not without angry emotions that lead to dangerous consequences. Moving on, a nun (Sister Elizabeth) and her assistant go to these unusual detectives over a hit and run case. Our poor detectives fail miserably. But in the process they learn that Sister Elizabeth had a tragic past with Bobby's spirit guide Murray. Later, our detectives learn that the hit and run incident was only part of a plan to kidnap the cardinal. So while our poor detectives failed in the simple hit and run case, they decide to uncover the mystery behind the cardinal's kidnapping. In my opinion, what makes this comedy work is that as silly as it gets, it avoids becoming an utter farce. The bumbling detective agency not only goes through moral development, but they actually start to pull together more, and become more effective. This is a lot more convincing than so called Hollywood heroes who are faultless and indestructible. Also, there is some violence in the story, but it is well placed, and the story doesn't take a back seat to it. Special kudos to Bess Armstrong for playing a very human nun. Perhaps the most hilarious scene is in the final chase when our heroes find themselves surrounded by the villains. Preston lets out a curse of despair; Sister Elizabeth gives a swift kick to the villain putting him out of action; but before their escape, Sister Elizabeth tells Preston: "Watch your language." Not only does this movie juggle comedy and suspense well, but it also allows the characters to go through moral development. My advice is to understand that this is a comedy, don't take it to seriously, and give it a chance.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Goober look at physic detectives
The basic story is of the rivalry of a private physic detective agency verses the police chief. An important person is abducted and it is up to the psychic to locate the perpetrator(s). The psychic must be feed Goobers regularly to maintain his stability. And somebody is getting lottery tips on the side.4-0 out of 5 stars Second Sight

4-0 out of 5 stars Plain funny movie, or was it at TAXI ????
I remember seeing this many years ago as a staple of late night movies, or sunday afternoon fillers. Now, being available on DVD, it is a must have for any movie collector.Kurt Russell plays one of the shadiest car salespeople you will ever meet. Two Brothers have competing auto dealerships across the road from each other. One is an old fashioned hard working man, the other is slick, shiney, and greasing the palms of all the important people.Watch these two dealerships slug it out with outrageous promotions, "honest salesmanship", and a whole lot of water based blue paint."Was This A TAXI?" is the first line I use when looking at Pre-Owned Cars now.get this movie, it's a sidesplitter.
4-0 out of 5 stars What have I done to the children?
When cineophiles think of classic 80s comedies, I would only hope that Used Cars makes their list.I had the unique opportunity to watch this film, and it took me back to a time when bathroom humor and gross sexual jokes were not needed to create hysterical comedy. It reminded me of a time when spontaneity and simplicity allowed for more laughter than imagined. This was the case with Used Cars. As I am a man in the used car business, I was a bit nervous about watching this film and perhaps seeing myself muddled in the middle.Needless to say that after watching this movie, I believe that every used car salesman (or anyone in sales for that matter) should watch Used Cars for not just Zemeckis' silly look at the profession, but because it actually does cover the true basis needed to run a successful dealership. As I watched this film, I couldn't think that Zemeckis made Russell and Graham's characters into very creative individuals, sometimes bending the law to assist in gaining a stronger customer base. They were smart, shrewd, and clever when it came to making the customer feel comfortable buying a car from them, which opened the door to more laughs per mile than most modern day comedies.Used Cars is a staple in the comedy genre, demonstrating that you can spoof a career, reinvent an age old story, and use mathematics (1 mile of cars = 250 cars) all to make a viewer laugh. It is a film that will make me laugh again and again, proving that it sustained well over the test of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Literary Movie
This is the type of story I was trained, as an English Major, to enjoy (and oh how I have hated being an English Major, but these are the moments when it seems to serve me well). I did enjoy it very much. I particularly enjoyed the slow, measured pacing vs. the amazing mountain footage. The pacing & footage were perfect for each other. The actors were all great--very nuanced. Less is more. The enjoyment of the movie for me lay in its great subtleties. For example, the young mountain guide, as he is about to ascend with the doctor, looks up at the mountain with a fatigued, defeated look that sets up the rest. A very fine movie, this. I made it four stars instead of five because somehow the overall carry wasn't just enough for five. The outcome and the things leading up to it weren't quite meshed enough. The heroine seems an ersatz Emma Thompson, to her credit, and the young man is very intense; his looks at her speak reams.

Editorial Review

Movies about the movies are a particularly rich vein, especially in comedies. No one understands just how ridiculous Hollywood is like the people who work there. This film is an affectionate behind-the-scenes story about a bumpkin (Jeff Bridges) who moves to Hollywood in the 1930s with visions of a career penning the kind of Westerns he loves to watch, especially the ones starring his favorite Western star (Andy Griffith). Instead, through a series of mishaps, he becomes an actor himself--and a pretty bad one at that--starring in B Westerns (and becoming a rival to Griffith, who turns out to be a particularly nasty piece of work, in a bit of casting against type). Alan Arkin and Blythe Danner join in the fun in this good-natured and amusing spoof. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Are we supposed to take this seriously?
Seriously, this movie has Michelle...I don't care that much to finish her last name. She is a terrible actress and yet she keeps getting roles in good movies. This isn't one of them. Unlike her catwoman preformance in "Batman Returns" where she was at least nice to look at, she does nothing in this movie. It's not even up to par with "Dangerous Laisons," in which where suppsoed to believe the hottest women in france are Glenn Close (ok, technically she is an attractive older woman) and Michelle. If that's true, I'm never going to france.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very well done , we even get to see Harrison Ford with no
shirt, not bad for a guy pushing 70.And Michelle always looks adorable.Loved the plot, perfect family, perfect house, perfect dog, perfect friends, perfect husband, a scientist with a big salary no less, perfect size 2 wife, and something hidden, dirty and horrifying to screw it all up.Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars BENEATH Contempt
I jest just a bit with that headline. This film is more disappointing than truly contemptible. WHAT LIES BENEATH looked like it might be that rare Hollywood commodity: a horror film geared toward a somewhat more mature audience. Casting respected actors (and major stars) like Ford and Pfeiffer seemed promising. And even though I am not a huge fan of director Zimeckis, I figured you could count on him for a solid, if not necessarily inspired product.

Seven men escaped from Westhofen, but just one of them George Heissler will surmount all the obstacles to findat last, to materialize this dream.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seared into memory
I first saw this movie in 1944 or 1945 at the age of 11, and the images of Spencer Tracy (number seven), as well as the suicide of the aerialist number six were seared into my memory forever. My vivid memory gives it a 5-Star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Conquering the Captive Mind
This is a good WWII vintage movie that makes a sombre and serous attempt to explore the captive mind of Fascism. It stars Spencer Tracy as one of seven concentration camps escapees in Germany. The commandant has sworn that he will nail each of the escapees to the seven crosses he has made. The bulk of the movie focusses on George Heisler (Tracy's character) and his efforts to find someone on the outside he can trust to help him.One by one the crosses are filled and Heisler's search becomes more and more desperate and depressing. No one seems to want to stick their neck out and help him.In time, things reach a crisis point and, in the midst of dispair, hope and trust appear. The movie becomes an uplifting message that transcends that of the typical WWII era movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars when it all strarted
This is the second dysfunctional family I know, besides mine of course lol. It's a realistic show (more so than Full House) and I can relate.Raymond "Ray" Barone (Ray Romano), who is a sports writer, is married to Debra (Patricia Heaton) and they have three beautiful children Ally (Madylin Sweeten) and twins Geoffrey and Michael (Sawyer and Sullivan Sweeten, who are real life brothers to Madylin).Ray's parents Marie (Doris Roberts) and Frank (Peter Boyle) live across the street along with his brother Robert (Brad Garrett), who has always been jealous of his older brother. With everything that happens, short from having a mental breakdown, Ray keeps cool and witty at all times.

2-0 out of 5 stars Slow Start.
Outside of episodes 4,5,10,20,21, and 22 the first season was not stellar by any means. The first episode and the Eulogy one were lame. Thankfully, this series was not cancelled. It would turn out to be one of my favorites over time. The last two episodes is when the series hit its stride. The Barones will be very missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars a very funny and successful inaugural season
I am pretty sure that while some of you have been tuning into "Raymond" from the very beginning, there are many, many other loyal fans who didn't start getting into the show until it really took off around Season 4. In any case, this season is a very fun one to revisit and will undoubtedly take you back to the cast's much earlier days.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Big Fat Greek Wedding
I'mnot known as a person who sits around watching romantic comedies. There's a reason for that. But I've shown this one to half a dozen classes and it hasn't grown stale. Witty dialogue, comic bits that work, and a fairly rapid pace that acknowledges we've seen this story before. The author didn't dumb it down, and the result is so universally appealing that I can show it to Chinese students and watch their shoulders shake with laughter. I can also see some weepies, which is always funny. Get this one and watch it when you want to relax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marriage is Between Families
Funny! The pressures of a Greek-American single woman who finally finds the groom and he isn't the Greek Knight she was supposed to find. Romantic Comedy with a Hellenic bent.

3-0 out of 5 stars run-of-the-mill ethnic comedy
I must admit, after I finally sat through the whole film, that I didn't think it was all that good. The acting is uneven:while the future husband is good, the dowdy-turned-sexy wife really doesn't give a convincing performance:not only is her character not very cogent (she quickly changes from painfully shy and timid to this earthy and witty chick), but her delivery lacks whatever it takes to get me to suspend my disbelief.I just couldn't see her as a real person. The supporting actors are quite good, if predictable, i.e. the in-laws freak out then come round with lots of ouzo, etc. etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not happy at all - DVD not working properly although suppose to be new
Although I purchased a brand new DVD and expected it to be brand new I have to report that I am extremely unhappy as the DVD is not working properly and stalls frequently during the middle part of the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars About Last Night still holds water
I can't believe I've only just seen this movie for the first time.SUCH a realistic insight into first (real) love and what living together must be like.My favorite aspect was how it portrays the strain that being in a relationship puts on your friendships.I liked it even more than the John Hughes movies of that era because of it's realism--Hughes would sometimes sacrifice the truth for a joke. The only part I found unrealistic was the ending--too Hollywood, considering the rest of the movie had an independent film feel (hence the four stars rather than five).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best date movie of the 80's...
For me this is best and most truthful date film of the 80's.Being from Chicago everything just rings true.I always thought the film makers did a great job of adapting a David Mamet play into an 80's comerical date movie, while leaving in some of Mamet's complex wording in the dialogue.

It seemed like a good idea in 1973: a musical scored by Donovan about the life and times of St. Francis of Assisi, the passionate ascetic who expressed love for God by loving nature. But the finished product was something else. Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Innocence
I caught this on AMC about five years ago and by the end of the movie I was in tears...I mean, I usually don't get too choked up over movies except for maybe Diehard and the Terminator series (just kiddin')...but this movie really touched me and moved me deeply and made me remember why I fell in Love with God.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the few truly inspiring movies, and I'm not even a Christian.
This movie really brings back the sixties--in the best sense. Back then we were on course toward a more caring, less conformist and corporate society. What happened? The movie plays just a little loose with the facts. In reality there was no tension between Francis and the Bishop of Asisi. Bishop Guido actually championed Francis. Oh, well, what's a movie wihout the obligatory murder? Anyhow, the casting is perfect, the camera work is beautiful, the songs are great. Inspiration awaits you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Silly, but Judi Bowker is pretty
At best, this movie is silly. At worst, it's stultifyingly boring. If one is a follower of St Francis, one might see this movie through rose-colored---no, make that opaque glasses. They would have to be opaque to avoid seeing the vacuous look on Faulkner's face most of the time. There is better acting in most middle-school plays. I am sure that St Francis was much more interesting and had much more depth and complexity of character.

An episodic account of a family of roving sheepherders in Australia. Paddy Carmody (Robert Mitchum) loves being "someone whose home is where the sun goes down," but his wife (Deborah Kerr) and teenage son are tired of the nomadic life and want to settle down. Director Fred Zinnemann (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Country
THE SUNDOWNERS is a very special film about sheepherders in the wonderful country of Australia. Robert Mitchum gives an impressive performance of a man torn between family and his love for the wide open country. This is a richly textured film with a touching score composed by Dimitri Tiomkin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Mitchum is Wonderful
I love this story of sheepherders set in Australia. Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr are a fine pair but one wants to take root and have a home and the other just can not stand still long enough to feel comfortable because it's in his blood you see. Mitchum is very convincing. Perhaps he identified with his character to some degree. This is sort of a change of pace for director Fred Zinnemann as his pace his methodical yet endearing to the land and people. This is a long lost classic.

3-0 out of 5 stars It screams for a remake!
I was really charmed by the book which is a great story about family and had high hopes for the movie when I finally found it.Don't get me wrong, I really think Ms. Kerr and Mr. Mitchum are wonderful actors and the scenery is great but the story is dumbed down and everything is too cute and funny. Peter Ustimov makes me gag!
