Liz and Dick (a.k.a. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) almost seemed to be importing the psychodramas of their marriage into this 1967 film (of course, the same was true of every film they made together). Adapted from Shakespeare's play and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Love Tames the Shrew ....
Turbulent star-crossed lovers Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were the leads in this 1967 take on Taming of the Shrew. Taylor gives a fiesty performance as the one who won't be taken ... who cannot seem to give (to quote Bette Midler's The Rose) ... while Burton's ravishing maestro of a character is the (finally) successful shrew tamer. Comedy that tells us why only love can tame a shrew ...but for how long?

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Burton/Taylor
I first saw this movie, as a child, and I just had to add it to my collection.Burton/Taylor are so perfectly cast in their roles, I really can not imagine other actors in those parts.I think a young Michael York does a good job with his small part, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shrew? Or a Neglected Daughter?
Along with "The Comedy of Errors," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and "The Merry Wives of Windsor," I always liked this comedy of Shakespeare's. As usual, Director Franco Zeffirelli brings the written material to the screen better than any of us could have expected. Some people complained that it was a bit overdone and rompish, but remember, this is a comedy, so you can get away that. Basically, this story involves 2 subplots that the master Shakespeare cleverly intertwines. Lucentio (Michael York, whom you may recall as Tybalt in "Romeo and Juliet), along with 2 rivals (Hortensio and Gremio) are in love with Bianca. But the problem is, Bianca's father Baptista will not allow Bianca to marry until her older and more shrewish sister Kate (Elizabeth Taylor) marries. Financial negotiations are of course mandatory in the cases of marriage here, (and if we think that is in the past, we are only kidding ourselves). Well, moving on Kate's shrewish nature makes the prospect of this unlikely. So, Bianca's suitors team up to at least resolve the matter of Kate first. Some people feel this is a sexist play, but if we look at Isaac Asimov's views, we find the play is not so. Asimov convincingly explainsin his book "Asimov's Guide To Shakespeare" the hidden picture. Bianca is not exactly so sweet. Rather, she is manipulative and has learned to monopolize her father's love, as well as the love of other people. We can also infer that Kate is not really a bad person. Rather, she is tired of the fact that her father virtually ignores her, and she is so scarred from this neglect, that she can't even see love when it is given (even though she so desperately wants it). And of course, the people who taunt her and tease her don't help the situation! Director Franco Zeffirelli does kind of hint at this. Moving on, in comes Petruchio (Richard Burton and Elizabeth's at the time husband). It may appear that Petruchio is only after the financial benefit of marrying Kate, but later situations prove otherwise. One charming bonus is that while Shakespeare has their wedding off stage, and explained, Mr. Zeffirelli shows the comical wedding for us to see. At first, it may seem that Petruchio is also cruel to Kate, but in reality, he is using a form of behavior modification, and if he did not love her, he wouldn't be going through the trouble that he does. In some ways, a more appropriate title to the play would be "The Rehabilitative Therapy of A Neglected Daughter." To be sure, Baptista is not exactly cruel to Kate, but he made no secret of the fact that he liked Bianca better. (Some parents try to at least hide the fact that they have a favorite child.) Well, Shakespeare switches back to the other plot, and Lucentio and Bianca can marry IF, Lucentio can prove he has the fortunes he says he does. Well, to do this, Lucentio hires someone to impersonate his father and negotiate. And all seems happy UNTIL, Lucentio's REAL FATHER comes for a visit, and runs into the man who is impersonating him! But leave it to Shakespeare to resolve everything, gives us a happy ending to both subplots, and bring everyone together for a feast and celebration. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A weak sequel but still enjoyable to watch!
I enjoyed the first two a lot but the third one seems to be weak. It's nothing close like the first two and the plot didn't seem to make sense to me. The ending was cool but I sure wish they made a BTTF 4 but BTTF 3 seems to be the end of the series. The acting is not bad though but I didn't see any similarities with the first two it was just a newer adventure where they go cowboy but it's still fun to watch if your a BTTF fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Was This the Best Science Fiction Movie Ever Made?
Well, there are five reasons. The first four are found in the review of the DVD set of all five;here is the last one:
3-0 out of 5 stars THE FUNNIEST WESTERN EVER MADE.
*** stars for "Back To The Future, Part III". Well, this movie isn't exactly a western, but it's a nice twist in the direction of the series, and a good conclusion to this excellent saga. This time, Marty (Michael J. Fox) and our favorite mad scientist Doc Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) are stuck in the Old West, and that premise gives a lot of opportunities to play with opposite genres, Western and Sci-Fi.

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with this inventive, perhaps too clever sequel to the popular 1985 comedy about a high school kid (Michael J. Fox) who travels into the past and has to bring his parents together (or lose his own existence). Director Robert Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication to this follow-up, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Fox's character watching his own actions from the first film. Read more

One of the greatest Westerns ever made gets the deluxe treatment on this superior disc from Republic Home Video's Silver Screen Classics line of special-edition DVDs. Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign.Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. 5-0 out of 5 stars A haunting and disturbing movie drama when it first came out
I have read a number of good reviews of this DVD on this site, especially the one written by Dennis Littrel. I will thus only add a small personal impression. I remember seeing this movie when it first came out and being troubled by the sight of the 'good guy' so disturbed and unsure of himself. This is not what we were expected to see from Western heroes. Also troubling was the possibility that the good guy somehow might not win. Also troubling was the involvement of the good guy with another woman in a way which could not be understood by a very young person. If he had a fiancee then what was he doing with this elderly Mexican woman?
5-0 out of 5 stars "I've never run from anybody before."

5-0 out of 5 stars High Noon
This movie hails as one of the classics of all times. The storyline always keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the final challenge of whose going to come out on top of the showdown and which gunfighters will live and die.

I love this movie. It's one of those cheesy 70's/80's films where the teenagers are full of hormaons and the pranks are played. However, unlike the million other's, this one rates right up there with the likes of Porky's! This comedy is filled with humour and some classic scenes thats sure to get the open minded veiwers laughing. It's not a kids flick, it's not something to sit around with grandma watching.

This well-acted drama won the Audience award at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, causing a festival ruckus when several distributors entered a bidding war in response to the movie's positive buzz. When the movie was finally released, audience and critical response provided a sudden reality check: the movie's good to a point, but hardly worth the fuss it received at Sundance. Packing a miniseries' worth of melodrama into 117 minutes, the story centers on a young woman named Percy (Alison Elliott) who served prison time for manslaughter and arrives in a small town in Maine with hopes of beginning a new life. She works as a waitress in the Spitfire Grill, owned by Hannah (Ellen Burstyn), whose gruff exterior conceals a kind heart and precious little tolerance for the grill's regular customers, who cast their suspicions on Percy's mysterious past. The plot unfolds when Hannah holds a $100-per-entry essay contest to find a new owner for the grill. There's ample mystery surrounding the collected money, a local hermit who's really Hannah's shell-shocked Vietnam veteran son, and circumstances that lead the locals to adopt a lynch-mob mentality at Percy's expense. By the time Percy is nearly drowning in a raging river, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A quiet, satisfying movie
The Spitfire Grill is a very well written and acted tear-jerker.A young girl, just released from prison, decides to settle down in the quiet New England village of Gillead. The residents initially are downright unfriendly to her, and their transformation is predictable, but achieved in an unpredictable and pleasing way.The Spitfire Grill is like that:certain outcomes are required in this kind of movie, but the way the story gets to them is surprising and satisfying.

The fate of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca under the brutal Franco regime is the subject of this political thriller. Esai Morales plays an expatriate writer named Ricardo who returns to his hometown Granada in 1954 to find out what happened to Lorca (Andy Garcia), his boyhood hero. With Franco's forces still in power, Ricardo meets a lot of official resistance, takes a few beatings, and defies the wishes of his own host (Jeroen Krabbé), an army colonel who was thickly involved in the torture and assassinations of the 1936 revolution. The closer the intrepid journalist gets to the truth of Lorca's disappearance, however, the more gray that truth becomes, and the more obscure the line between heroism and villainy. This film by Marcos Zurinaga suffers from a bit of miscalculation--Morales's character is simply not interesting enough to hold the center of the story and be our window into the great Lorca--but it is nonetheless startling and tragic in its revelation of complicated truths. As Lorca, Garcia is the picture of nobility, and supporting roles by Krabbé, Edward James Olmos, and Miguel Ferrer add a great deal of dramatic texture. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie
This was one of the best movies I have seen. The flashback technique was somewhat like Mulholland Drive, but the viewer was allowed to achieve total understanding at the end. (Although it might take a couple of viewings to really understand.)Every actor and scene contributed to the mystery which gradually illuminated complicated political, social, artistic, and psychological truths in the search for the answer to a seemingly simple question. The acting was fantastic as were the music and the settings, and the dialogue. Each complimented the other. There was some gestalt in the ending and Andy Garcia's portrayal of Lorca was courageous, sad, intelligent, and sensitive. It definitly inspires a second or third viewing, purchase of the soundtrack and Llorca's poetry. Also politcally pertinent even today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
I loved the movie "The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca" mainly because of its respect for its subject matter, which is the great Spanish poet, Garcia Lorca.I had just read some of his poetry while taking a World Literature course, and I absolutely fell in love with this poet. Therefore, I wanted to know more aobut his life and the circumstances revolving around his suspicious death. The movie answered a lot of my questions in an entertaining, yet informative manner.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Moving, if not completely historically correct
This movie was very good. Given that, yes, some of the lines were cheesy and there were some questionable characters(the cab driver and Gabino). Nevertheless, this movie did bring to life the lives that Lorca touched and the beauty of his work. Andy Garcia gave a wonderful performance and his acting was so touching. The only thing that irritated me was that there was a sex scene. I know the old saying,"Sex sells" but come on! This was not a pornographic movie. This was about a poet and his death. I didn't particularly want to see Esai Morales "get it on" with a childhood friend. That was unnecessary. Otherwise, I was moved and inspired by this movie. I bawled my bloody eyes out at the end. Good movie. Please watch it. ... Read more

A young Rick Schroder makes his cute-as-all-get-out film debut in this 1979 tearjerker from director Franco Zeffirelli. Jon Voight plays Billy Flynn, a former champion boxer now given to drinking, gambling, and raising his son T.J. (Schroder, billed here as Ricky) as best he can. The ups and downs of the devoted codependent pair might be enough movie on their own, but soon enough Annie (Faye Dunaway) shows up and displays a strangely protective interest in T.J. I saw this movie when it first came out. It's just as tear-jerking now as it was then!Ricky Schroeder is the best child actor ever and rips your heart out in several scenes. The whole cast does an awesome job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best Child Performance Ever Caught on Film
I remember seeing this movie in the theater when I was 16.I recall that everybody there was crying by the end.I don't think I've seen a performance by a child star that can rival little Ricky Schroder's effort in this film. This was his first acting job and he stole the show with what was easily an Oscar winning performance. This movie is a remake of an older film by the same title made back in the early 1930's; this remake is superior on all counts.Jackie Cooper, then age nine played the role covered here by Schroder.Wallace Beerey played the title role done here by Jon Voight. The film is about as perfect as any drama could hope to be because it deals so honestly with very real family issues. The events told in the story could happen to anyone.Perhaps that's why it was such a success in the theaters.Performaces by all the actors were simply fantastic, but again Schroder's will leave you stunned.I've never been able to get through this film without tearing up, as it's one of the most emotional films ever made.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jane Eyre not a great adaption
I have seen most of the versions of jane Eyre. and this has to be my least favorite. I wanted to like it.. I really did. The visuals were wonderful, the moodiness was there. What ruined it was William Hurt.. which I hate to say, because he is one of my favorite actors.
2-0 out of 5 stars A poor adaptation
As Rochester remarks, there is much more to Jane Eyre than her starched demeanor allows and in turn, more to Rochester than his repressed and sometimes cruel stance. The book is a testament to character shaping destiny and of course a love that transcends and transforms their lives.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zeffirelli's version is excellent
The cinematography and attention to period detail is breathtaking and natural. One finds oneself engrossed in the time period of this film. This version excellently conveys one of the central themes of the English novel of its time:a woman is relegated to her place in society based upon the circumstances of her birth. How does she escape her social bondage?Jane Eyre is a triumphant herione because of her strength of character. Thus, expect a "plain Jane" in her role, whose beauty lives in her spirit and courage, rather than her appearance.William Hurt's portrayal of the tortured protaganist was surprisingly outstanding. He is both charming and inaccessible;witty and complex;vulnerable and strong. And most important, convincingly appealing,at least to a middle aged woman! The supporting roles were outstanding, especially the housekeeper. The mystery of the house is both suspenseful and intriguing--it will definitley keep you engrossed. All elements worked together to a make this version outstanding.Ultimately, when reading a review I want to know if the film is worth purchasing.I have watched it repeatedly and am pleased I purchased this faithful adaptation and beautifully filmed version. ... CHEESY. STUPID. MEANINGLESS. BOOGER SUCKS!!! HOW COULD THEY RUIN PART 3???

3-0 out of 5 stars Luscious Lamar's My Love
What we have here is a reunion of sorts 'cause you see there's gonna be a wedding- Booger's (appropriately named because he picks his ____) gettin' hitched. I agree with most of the other reviews which claim it pales in comparison to the first two flicks. But for me, the writer, director & producer all get five stars for deciding to again capitalize on Larry B. Scott's 'muscles on top of muscles' bod. Trust me, Scott's certainly not the wimpy milktoast he portrays in these vehicles. Always buffed beyond belief, his saving grace has always been below his neck. Guys & gals who flock to him probably just put a bag over his face before getting down & dirty. The writer has given Lamar a striptease scene towards the end of the movie but even before then viewers are unmercifully treated to countless flexes of his huge guns. As for the other nerd contributions, Ted Mc Ginley spends most of his time watching all the zanniness from bed with 3D glasses. Naturally his girlfriend is aboard as well. One of my favorite clips comes at the very beginning where THE FAMILY TREE is displayed with the new additions. It might've played better if Booger was pictured _______ you know what. Outside of Lamar's stripdown being too brief, I liked the clever banter back & forth between the principles. It came across on sceen as most definetly a wedding I'd attend but then that would be for a totally different reason which I'd rather not go into. Oh OK I think LUSCIOUS LAMAR needs a boyfriend badly. What a pity a four volume DVD collection of THE NERDS hasn't graced store shelves yet. I just LOVE getting up close & personal with MY ZOOM!

A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Heart-Warming Tear-Jerker Of A Movie. Anna Chulumsky Is Terrific. Recommended For Girls Only.
I caught this wonderful movie on TV (and was able to see all of it) after only seeing snippets of it, which I liked. I admit, I'm a real sucker for these movies (my best friend knows me best-thank God for her; that's how I can relate to this tear-jerker). I cried at the end of this movie. SPOILER AHEAD!!! My favorite scene is when Vada (Anna Chlumsky, in a heart-breaking performance) cries over Thomas J.'s (Mac. Culkin) coffin. God, that scene literally ripped me in two. Jamie Lee Curtis (daughter of the late Janet Leigh (from "Psycho" fame) and Tony Curtis ("Spartacus," "The Great Race")) and Dan Akroyd ("Pearl Harbor") are well-cast as a wandering woman whom Vada initially resents for trying to marry her overworking father to escape from her past experiences in life, but then comes to love at the end, and her dad, who works as an undertaker. I recommend this movie to girls for a Girls Night Out (or sleepover, etc). Rated PG for some thematic elements and mild language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Confused About Death
I remember when "My Girl" came out in cinemas. I was in third grade, I was at a new school, and it was the start of a new term. First thing we had to do is get into partners and tell the other person what you'd done over the holidays. I still hadn't made any proper friends yet, so no one really wanted to be my partner. I told the teacher, and he told off the class for not being very friendly. That was embarrassing, but it got me a partner. And what had I done over the holidays? I'd gone and seen "My Girl", so I talked about that...
1-0 out of 5 stars Parents be forewarned! This is a troubling film.
Be forewarned!.....This is a sad movie.I don't agree that this movie is a comedy nor is it a family film.I lost my best friend who was a girl unexpectedly at the age of 7.My parents in their wisdom thought it best that I didn't go to the funeral home and see her lying in a coffin.I feel the producers of this film should have included a warning.I felt violated by this film.Although death is a natural event, this young girl lacks any spiritual understanding of death.Like so many films today that call themselves "Family Entertainment", there is no God and consequently, no hope.I'd steer away from this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Touching Film of Courage, Canniness, and Survival
This is a very moving film of one man's determination to stay alive while alone on a desert island after a plane crash. You can feel Chuck Noland's frustration level build as nothing seems to be going right, and he finally crashes emotionally when his only friend on the island (a volleyball named Wilson) floats out to sea.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Part of Film History
About 90% of the film you only see one actor, one person on the screen: no one else expect that one man...
4-0 out of 5 stars I forgt how powerful this film really was...
I watched this film again in anticipation of Hanks in The DaVinci Code. And I was amazed at how much I reacted this movie after 2 years. Unlike others, I don't like to give away the film. Details can sometimes make it so the film doesn't need to be seen. I prefer to express the emotion in this movie.

Through the idyllic but war-ridden jungles of Vietnam strides Chuck Norris as Braddock, one-man army, killing the enemy in droves with every gun burst, hauling wounded buddies to safety draped across his shoulders like sacks of wheat. He doesn't wear a helmet because clearly his head is not a particularly vulnerable area. As he leaps upon a vicious Vietcong who's brutally bayoneting a buddy of Braddock's, he plucks the rings from two hand grenades--and wakes from a recurring nightmare. Haunted by his memories, Braddock joins a delegation sent to Vietnam to negotiate for the return of missing-in-action prisoners of war (hence the movie's title, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tsunami is water fleeing Chuck Norris
I would say this is the greatest Chuck Norris movie, no wait, the greatest movie of all-time except for one thing. And that is that all Chuck Norris movies are created equal and better then the movies like the Godfather, Schlinder's List, Back Door Sluts 9, and Braveheart combined.Chuck Norris is a much better actor then Tom Hanks and Marlon Brando because he knows karate.Hell Chuck Norris invented Karate as well as Judo, Kung Fu, and Hamster style Jap Slapping.Do yourself a favor and buy this movie so you can call yourself a man.And if your a woman buy this movie and pray Chuck Norris comes to your house and gets you pregnant.
