4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Blooded but Flawed Tale of Backwoods Romance
"Ruby Gentry" is one of a string of intense and fiery melodramas that remind me so well of the proliferation of night time soap operas that blossomed during the 1980s. This film stars Jennifer Jones at her sultry best as Ruby, a no-account white trash raised in the rugged swamplands. The flame of her dishonorable intentions is turned up at the first sight of rich and bo-hunky, Boake Tackman (Chalton Heston). Boake allows Ruby to get close to him but he never once considers their youthful dalliances anything more than slumming. When Boake enters into a marriage proposal with Tracy McAuliffe (Phyllis Avery), done more for community property than grand amour, Ruby dives head first into a love-less marriage of her own to Jim Gentry (Carl Malden). Jim's financial success allows Ruby to gussy herself into respectability which is short lived after a boating accident claims Jim's life. Ruby's lack of mourning arouses suspicion from the local town folk. More than a few eyebrows get raised when Ruby makes another passionate pitch for Boake's affections not long thereafter. Rejected by Boake once more - this time for her reputation rather than lack of money - Ruby's passion ignites into bitter sadism. She purposefully destroys Boake's farm. There is more to this sordid tale, but I'll stop short of giving away all the trade secrets. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific tale of love, passion and revenge!
The melodrama formula is perfect in this film. King Vidor, one of the most talented directors of the Hollywood great times, give us a stunning fable of desire. Jennifer Jones is amazing as Ruby... as young Charlton Heston. Some people of today can't understand why a movie like this could be a masterpiece. They want reality on the screen and "Ruby Gentry" is a surrealistic story of love. Like "Peter Ibbetson" or "Portrait of Jeannie" or, most recently, "Birth".

4-0 out of 5 stars Passion and revenge in a small town
Charlton Heston may be featured prominently on the dvd cover but the real star of this passionate melodrama is Jennifer Jones. In one of her best roles, she plays the title role, a sultry North Carolina backwoods girl from the wrong side of the tracks. She's in love with Boake Tackman (Heston), a blueblood land developer who betrays her by marrying a wealthy girl that his family approves. Ruby vows revenge on him and the townspeople by marrying a wealthy doctor (Karl Malden) and gaining entry into the high society that shunned her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Idiot's delight
Remade less successfully as Pure Luck, the first of Pierre Richard and Gerard Depardieu's three teamings for writer-director Francis Veber, La Chevre is still the best of the bunch. Richard's the idiot accountant assigned to find a missing girl in South America simply because he's every bit as accident-prone as she is, while Depardieu's the worldly private eye who has to pretend to be working for him while really running the case and trying to keep him out of trouble. You can pretty much fill in the gaps from there, but that doesn't make it any less funny. Richard's pratfalls work not just because they're unsensationally directed rather than heavily telegraphed (one even takes place out of focus in the background) but because, like Clouseau, Richard's character doesn't know he's a clumsy idiot. In fact, he thinks he's the epitome of cool and control. But it's Depardieu who really makes the film, his underplayed exasperation and beautiful reaction shots easily the funniest thing in the film, especially as he realises with increasing fatalism that Richard's bad luck is starting to rub off.
3-0 out of 5 stars Just to have fun
It is a good movie, not a great one, but it still follows an original line. A CEO sends an employee -Pierre Richard -, to find his kidnapped daughter in Mexico. He has been advised to choose him because the employee has such a bad luck, as his daughter has, that he is forcefully going to fall in the same traps and, sooner or later, in the same place than her beloved child. Gerard Depardieu does not believe in such argument and has to make a team with the bad-luck guy. Together, they will made a great team. Hillarious, entertaining and fun !.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pan and Scan?
Although Kino's DVD is widescreen anamorphic, it appears that one is not seeing the whole film.According to IMDB's technical specs, the film was shot in Panavision, with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.Whereas the DVD has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1

4-0 out of 5 stars Very funny at parts but kind of slapstick
I wouldn't call this a subtly witty movie, but there were times when I laughed out loud. There were other times when I thought it was predictable and the humor just too broad.

Les Comprres is a must for French classrooms.Students 7th through 12th laugh hysterically at the comical duo of Depardieu and Richard!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining and well performed, but nothing new
Episode title: The House of Quark5-0 out of 5 stars Quark becomes the head of a Klingon House...really, he does
It is amazing how much trouble one little lie can get you into.A Klingon named Kozak gets drunk and falls on his knife in Quark's bar.The Ferengi makes up a story about a fierce battle in which he slew Kozak.Surprisingly, D'Ghor, Kozak's brother, supports Quark's wild story and the next thing the Ferengi knows the Kozak's widow, Grilka, kidnaps Quark, takes him to the Klingon home world, and persuades him to marry her by holding a knife to his throat. It seems that because Kozak died "honorably," in battle with Quark, his house was about to go to D'Ghor since Kozak had no male heirs.Grilka quickly wed the person who killed her husband, thereby creating the House of Quark.Of course, matters between Quark and D'Ghor are only going to be settled in the end by personal combat. With all the clashes between the Federation and other cultures it is wonderful to get them out of the way and let the Klingon and Ferengi views of the universe collide like this. After all, Quark is basically a coward out who just wants to make a profit, which means Gowron and the rest of these Klingons do not have a chance.Although this episode focuses on Quark and his predicament, there is a sub-plot that shows Bajorans abandoning DS9 because of the threat of the Dominion. But that is just treading water while Quark as the head of a Klingon house certainly qualifies as jumping into the deep end of the pool."The House of Quark" would be my pick for the best Quark episode ever, at least in terms of the "funny" ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars the canonic decline of the Klingon female
Most Trek episodes featuring the buffoonish Ferengi are comedy.Or the greedy, cowardly, conniving, sexist little trolls serve as foils for the nobler, more enlightened Humans and other Federation species."House of Quark" establishes a disturbing view of a species apparently even more misogynist than the Ferengi.Ironically, that species is one wildly popular with the series' female fans: the Klingons.Admittedly, Klingon women's role in Trek had already degenerated, from the powerful warrioresses who could command ships in battle and rule the Empire, to little more than lusty, cleavage-baring dominatrixes. But as revealed in "House of Quark", the Klingon wife is basically a chattel. She cannot head a House, inherit property, or even fight her own duel for Honor.A widow may be forced to marry her husband's murderer to retain her position as mistress of his House. This is the basis for the episode's "cute" plot device -- Quark has to marry a Klingon! There is obviously no love between Grilka and her useless mate Kozak. But when the drunken petaQ falls on his own knife in Quark's Bar, his hapless widow must coerce Quark to champion her.The resulting comical situations don't disguise the unsettling revelation that a Klingon female has fewer rights on her own Homeworld than does a Ferengi male!Considering the Klingon opinion that Ferengi occupy the lowest rung on the Galactic "food chain", this is unpalatable fare indeed!Luckily for the damsel in distress, Quark is more chivalrous than the average Ferengi, and clever enough to convince the Council to grant Grilka "special dispensation".Although overall "The House of Quark" is entertaining, I consider it a poorly-conceived, disappointing episode. It institutes the canonic disempowerment of the Klingon woman, which will progress throughout the DS9 series and continue in Voyager. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The very best Highlander Season
It is great to finally watch the fourth season again, and for the very first time watch them in English and with Eurominutes both. I have been a Highlander Fan since the first (and only acceptable) movie 1985, and I was a fan of the series since it came to German in 1993 (I think). But I always could only see it in German dubbing. Until now. And the fourth season is the best one - dramatically, and for the quality of the show. The fifth is a close runner-up, because it has unforgettable episodes like Comes a Horseman, Revelations and Forgive Us Our Tresspasses; but the overall development of Duncan in the fourth Season is breathtaking to watch again, and than there are episodes like Timeless, Something Wicked and Deliverance, with a breathtaking Dark Duncan MacLeod who seems still a bit too harmless to be really an irredeemable bad guy, but also shows all the necessary Horseman-material. And in the end: Judgement Day! With it's first thrilling hints about hos it would look if it ever came to war between watchers and Immortals! WOW!
4-0 out of 5 stars Changes in Highlander
A darker look at Duncan MacLeod, that showed variety in the show, if not it's best side. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a brilliant series
Highlander is a wonderful series and season 4 is one of my favorites. Adrian Paul is magnificent as always but really puts in one of his best performances aa the Evil Duncan MacLeod.Read more

The crew's much-needed shore leave has to be postponed when they runacross anomalies in the space-time continuum. Hiccups in time are causing occasional moments of déjà vu. The distress signal from Dr. PaulManheim (Rod Loomis), a scientist who's been working on experiments in nonlineartime, puts Picard into a bit of an emotional funk. You see, 22 years prior, Picard was supposed to meet a woman in a café in Paris--a woman whom he loved and who loved him. He stood her up for fear of being tied down by a relationship, choosing instead his Starfleet career. Needless to say, the old flame (Michelle Phillips) ended up marrying Manheim, and now it's up to Picard and the crew of the Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars "Oh, we are us sir, but they are also us.So indeed, we are both us."
Star Trek:The Next Generation attempts to humanize its captain with "We'll Always Have Paris."It not only reveals the romantic side of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) but examines how his personal life has suffered because of his dedication to Starfleet.
4-0 out of 5 stars Picard relives a moment of great weakness
On their way to a base to engage in some much-needed shore leave, the Enterprise suddenly experiences a brief looping of time. After verifying that the loop did indeed occur, they discover that it was not an isolated event, as it propagated across several thousand light years. Shortly after this, they receive a distress call from Dr. Paul Manheim, a scientist known to be conducting research in the fundamentals of time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Au contraire....
Contrary to the review "Time Distortion" just previous, I would have to say that chemistry of a former affair between the characters of Picard and Jenice was, in fact, in evidence. But this former connection was played with subtlety and maturity, not foolish hot kissing and furtive groping, as is so much in evidence on current television. The former affair would have had its after effects, years later, very plausibly in the way it was protrayed. It made an interesting foil to the time distortion story, as well as help to flesh out the human side of Picard's normally brusque character, a necessary development in the first season towards building audience interest in the new series. And it didn't hurt that Michelle Phillips was cast as Jenice - she played the part with the right mix of chic, loveliness and grace. This episode is one of my favorites, as it addresses the age-old story of lost loves, regrets, ambition, and other roads taken, all as a universal theme of the human condition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Mature Film
The stifling oppression of poverty and the tragedy born from it is the subject of this mature film from King Vidor. Based on Elmer Rice's Pulitzer Prize winning play this Samuel Goldwyn produced film starring a young Sylvia Sidney is full of insight and maturity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film
Gripping, realistic account of the lives of the inhabitants of New York tenements, during the Depression years, based upon the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Elmer Rice.
4-0 out of 5 stars STREET SCENE: Sylvia Sidney Heats Up the Screen
Every so often heat becomes more than just a stifling rise in temperature designed to raise both a sweat and the tempers of the cast.Sometimes, heat acts as a metaphor to suggest the turmoil that often accompanies that heat rise.In STREET SCENE, director King Vidor took the Pulitzer Prize play by Elmer Rice and used Rice's own adaption to present a steamy day in a New York City tenement.A youthful Sylvia Sidney in one of her first starring roles shows the sloe-eyed sadness that came to mark her future screen persona.Sidney is Rose, a young girl who faces the double trauma of knowing that her mother has been carrying on an affair because her brute of a father radiates all the familial and paternal warmth of a vicious rat.Further complicating her life is her growing attraction for Sam (William Collier), a neighboring boy who suffers ostracism because of his Jewishness. The affair, the prejudice, the heat interact to produce an explosive climax that even today is remarkable in its jarring intensity. The technology of sound was in its infancy in 1931.Much of the dialogue and background auditory effects grate joltingly on the senses, which considering the frayed tempers exacerbated by the heat, is not necessarily a bad thing.STREET SCENE is the kind of unsettling film that makes you forget that film and sound technology need not be advanced for a superior script, fine acting, and first-rate directing to make you realize that you have just seen a gem of a film. ... Editorial Review

Roger Vadim's directorial debut is more titillation than continental cool, but it broke box-office records and censorship taboos in its teasing display of sex and eroticism in the sunny vacation playground of the Saint-Tropez seashore. Vadim ushered in the era of continental attitudes toward sex and christened the voluptuous Brigitte Bardot (his wife) the world's original sex kitten: earthy, innocent, and all fleshy curves. Bardot is Juliette, a pouty child-woman orphan prone to nude sunbathing and playful flirting. Though pursued by a rich widower (Curt Jurgens) and attracted to the brawny fisherman Antoine (Christian Marquand), she marries Antoine's shy younger brother Michel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), an earnest, innocent kid hardly older than she but far less worldly. Despite her sincere efforts to "be good," Juliette gives in to Michel's advances, setting off a chain of events that ends in fraternal conflict.Vadim keeps the display of skin this side of an R rating, but only barely, teasing the male audience with skimpy outfits, barely concealing sheets, and often conveniently arranged scenery. Bohemian Bardot frolics through the film with nary a self-conscious moment, culminating in a passionate mambo, her pent-up frustration and sexual confusion exploding in a mad dance as bongos pound away on the soundtrack. 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, and worth watching for more than Bardot.
I saw this recently on a lark just to see what all the Brigitte Bardot fuss was about -- and wasn't expecting much since sex comedy farces (particularly French ones) aren't high on my film watch lists -- but was surprised at how good (and good-natured) it was.Besides the vivacious charms of Ms. Bardot, this film had a solid script and good acting and dialogs. (One of my favorite lines had Bardot replying to a query why a family won't sell its puny shipyard to the effect that they want to at least still *own* something to not to feel poor.)The story is not highbrow, but is far from being lowbrow and tawdry and exploitative as some newcomers (like me) might perceive from its notorious reputation. Bardot plays Juliette, the "town tramp" of St. Tropezwho is pursued by a rich, elderly playboy while carrying the torch for Antonio, an impecunious shipwright who treats her just as a convenient one-night-stand.In comes Antonio's younger brother, Michele, who truly loves her and offers to marry her to save her from being sent back to the orphanage. Juliette marries Michele and comes to love him despite herself, while fighting against her reckless, impetuous nature as Antonio comes back into the scene and presents a constant temptation. Will love or lust wins out?Call me old-fashioned, but I liked how the movie ends, and I agree with another Amazon reviewer's analysis (Robert Cartland), which hits it square on the head. (BTW, the video transfer for this Criterion DVD edition is excellent, eliminating all the old flaws while preserving the warm, vibrant colors of the St. Tropez location to great effect.)

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sex Kitten is Born
If you've never watched any of Bardot's movies, I'd say this would be the best place to start. It displays Brigitte at the height of her beauty and is the perfect vehicle to show case her unbridled, breathtaking sensuality. Though the plot is thin and the sex scenes and nudity(which are actually more in the viewers imagination than on screen),are very tame and modest by today's standards, you can see why Bardot would have been ahead of her time and why she became a screen icon and legend. In a sense she was the original example of the sexually liberated woman, living by her own laws of sensuality and freedom. Along with that you can't take your eyes of her, she is a goddess incarnate and what she lacks in acting ability, she makes up for in charm and natural screen presence. Brigitte's 'Juliette' character, a teenaged orphan forced into a marriage of convenience, is childishly irresponsible, sulky, untamed and larger than life. But then I find a lot of French movies like to portray their woman as pouting, rebellious, reckless man eaters. Bardot was the original sex kitten however, with her tousled mane, luscious pout, gorgeous shapely figure, and careless sexy walk, she spawned a generation of imitators; her style still evident more than ever in today's starlets, who can't hold a candle to her. Director Roger Vadim makes good use of beautiful and unspoiled St Tropez as a backdrop, but it is his stunning, shapely young 'Mrs' who carries this film.I doubt if it would have got a second look without her presence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bardolatry at its finest!
This is the film that made Brigitte Bardot a legend. I have to admit: I have tried to look at this film objectively and I find it alternately demeaning, silly, and just plain dumb. So how come I'm giving it five stars? One word: Bardot. If you were to assemble a dictionary that would use visuals to illustrate the various words, Bardot's mambo sequence would authoritatively define the word "sensual." With the pulsating sound of the bongos in the background punctuated by blaring horns, Brigitte is larger than life dancing from room to room like a woman possessed. This may not be acting but it sure holds your attention - kind of like watching a human being transform into a wild animal. This sequence tells you all you need to know about why Bardot is a legend even in her senior years. And no, I don't believe And God Created Woman's silly ending in which we are expected to believe that a few slaps from Jean Louis Trintignant are enough to turn Bardot into a submissive French housewife. On the other hand, I don't think audiences in the 1950's were ready to deal with the reality of a sexually liberated woman like Brigitte. ... Read more

Masterpiece or masquerade? Lars von Trier's digicam musical split the critics in two when it debuted at Cannes in 2000. There were those who saw it as a cynical shock-opera from a manipulative charlatan, others wept openly at its scenes of raw emotion and heart-rending intensity. There is, however, no in-between. 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible movie! Be prepared to cry in the finale...
This is surely a masterpiece although it has as many admirers as haters. It is difficult to describe its character: is it a melodrama, a sentimental soap-opera, a musical, an eccentric videoclip, or simply a surrealistic story of a woman (Selma) who wears thick glasses and loses her vision with each day passing? Selma dances and sings due to her incurable love for musicals, when everything around her is falling apart. The camerawork is indeed hard to follow in some cases, but if you are patient enough you will be amply rewarded in the end! The finale is incredibly moving. Director Lars von Trier deserves congratulations because he succeeded to bring back compassion in modern cinema with the most subversive way. A film not to be missed!

1-0 out of 5 stars Painfully dull, the camerawork is irritating as hell. Think "Blair Witch Project"
I couldn't even get to the end of this movie, it was so irritatingly dull.THe camerawork is... "artsy"? It made me feel sick. Evidently the ending was worse than the first half so I'm glad I didn't finish it. I'll just stick to (some of) Bjork's music and avoid ALL of this director's work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nauseating
I wish I could give this film negative-5 stars.Truly the worst movie I have ever seen.Von Trier is a sadist who forces his audience to sit through the last hour of the movie and share the unending agony of the main character, only to be followed by a horrible execution. After it was over, I was truly ill.Watching this movie reduced the quality of my life.I will never see a Von Trier movie again. He hates women and it shows. He should be launched into outer space; only a hateful human being would make something like this. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sisko gets the Defiant to play with and Odo finds his people
As the third season of Deep Space Nine begins Commander Sisko has a new toy to play with: a prototype warship named the Defiant.Instead of waiting for the Dominion to attack DS9, Sisko intends to take the ship into the Gamma Quadrant and try to locate the Founders, the supposed leaders of the Dominion and its Jem'Haddar soldiers.Although equipped with a Romulan cloaking device, the Defiant still ends up being boarded by the Jem'Haddar.Odo and Kira escape in a shuttle where the Constable reacts to a sudden urge and takes the ship to the Omarion Nebula where he discovers a colony of Changelings.5-0 out of 5 stars If the Dominion comes through the wormhole, we'll be ready..
The shocking season finale left Sisko stating that DS9 was the first line of defence from any attack force from the Gamma Quadrant and he intends tobe ready for them! 4-0 out of 5 stars U.S.S. Defiant kicks!
I thought the Defiants first showing on DS9 was cool! It had wounderful action shots and was an edge of your seat ride from entering the unknown Gamma Quadrant on the other side of the GALAXY to find the Founders of theDominion to woundering if the crew of DS9 would servive! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Haven't seen the movie
I'm just rating it because I think the chick on the cover is hot. She was also in The Further Adventures of Tennesee Buck, where she gets completely naked and receives an awesome oil rub-down. I did a white-wash salute to that flick, and I'm guessing I will do the same by the end of this one, too. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Something of a false start to the big War with the Dominion
Odo discovers a whole lot about his mysterious past from the colony of Changelings he and Kira have discovered in the Gamma Quadrant. The Constable is also tantalized by references to the "Great Link," a merging ceremony unique to the Changelings.Meanwhile, Sisko and Bashir limp back to DS9 on a shuttle only to discover the Federation is negotiating a treaty with the Dominion.Sisko and company know this would be a fatal mistake and decide to take matters into their own hands. There is a fatal flaw with Part 2 of "The Search," which is simply that the conclusion basically undoes the entire episode.Consequently, this episode loses a star although the surprising revelation that the Changelings are the Founders and Sisko's decision to collapse the entrance to the wormhole are pretty good.Besides, DS9 had been building towards this big confrontation between the Federation and the Dominion that is suddenly pushed back to some time in the future. This is necessary because it would be hard to explore the various characters on the show while a war was being fought on the Promenade, but it does come across as something of a cheat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A conclusion?
After the shocking end to the first episode Odo comes face to face with his own people. In the meantime the crippled Defiant makes its way back toDS9 once there the remaining crew find a Dominion negotiation party thatare planning on brining a close to the Federation-Dominion problem. ButStarfleet are terrified of this new threat and begin giving-in to theoutrageous Dominion demands, Sisko can't stand by and allow the Dominion tomake a foothold in the Alpha Quadrant so he decides to destroy the entraceto the wormhole, keeping the Jem'hadar on the other side of the galaxy. Butbefore he can Starfleet threaten to prevent any attempt by Sisko... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DOCUMENTO PARA LA HISTORIA...
AleluyA!!!!, MARAVILLOSO TENER LA OPORTUNIDAD DE DISFRUTAR DE ESTE FILM DE KING VIDOR QUE HACE MUCHOS AÑOS QUERÍA VER. VIDOR NOS PINTA DE UNA MANERA SENCILLA EL AMBIENTE DE ESTA COMUNIDAD AFRO AMERICANA DE COMIENZOS DEL SIGLO XX,LA COSECHA DE ALGODÓN, SU COMERCIO, LOS CANTOS RELIGIOSOS (GOSPEL SONGS), LAS BANDAS DEL NACIENTE JAZZ (DIXIELAND), LA INFLUENCIA DE LO COUNTRY O RURAL, CON EL BANJO Y EL BAILE TAP, EN LAS CELEBRACIONES FAMILIARES Y LA FUERZA DE LA RELIGIÓN BAUTISTA, EN LA LUCHA DEL BIEN Y EL MAL REPRESENTADO POR EL JUEGO, LA AMBICIÓN DE DINERO Y LA ATRACCIÓN SEXUAL, CON EL FINAL FELÍZ CARACTERÍSTICO DE LAS PELÍCULAS DE ÉPOCA.
4-0 out of 5 stars more than just an artifact
king vidors "hallelujah" was the only hollywood mainstream film with a black cast until the 1940s.as such, it has historical signicance, but it merits viewing on its own terms as well.while it seems patronizing to todays culture, it is rather progressive about racial stereotyping for its day.strong performances by a now mostly forgotten cast, and a great musical score.definitely worth a view.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good One!!
What a gem of a movie!I purchased it only because I wanted to see more of Nina Mae McKinney and it was certainly worth it.The extra footage of the Nicholas brothers makes this one a keeper! ... Read more
