5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Frank Satire of Stalinist Russia
Many movies poke fun at the Soviets.Having traveled to Russia several times, this is my favorite. When so many misguided leftists of the 1940's were defending communism, this film courageously suggests the pervasiveness of the totalitarian government of Stalin. (It was filmed just before Russia was attacked by the Germans in World War II)
5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Hollywood Film The Poked Fun At The Commies
This film was made at the time when the Communist Party and it's agents were trying to infiltrate Hollywood at all levels. ( "Hollywood Party" is a must companion book for this movie), given the power of the party and the communist screenwriters who were at the pinacle of Hollywood success at the time. It was brave for Gable & Lamarr to make this film. Comrade X is the only film ever made in Hollywood that ever tried to portray the harsh reality of Soviet Russia. Granted it did so in a comedic but any movie with a young Heddy Lamarr is worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This
Coming on the heels of Garbo's "Ninotchka" this film was somewhat dismissed as lightweight, but in retrospect it is a delightfully hilarious blend of political satire and slapstick comedy from King Vidor. The writing team of Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer gave the legendary director a gem of a script, poking fun at communism while still allowing its stars, Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr, to be, well Clark Gable and Hedy Lamarr. The result was a film that was much funnier and way more entertaining than "Ninotchka."

4-0 out of 5 stars Zentropa
The first film from Lars Von Trier's "Europa" trilogy that I have seen. It was a very intriguing film and definitely bears similarities with Von Trier's later films, but is SO much different. It is so stylized and well shot and so glossy and, dare I say, very Hollywood of him. Whereas, his new films are shot on DV and look very rough. I prefer the new way, haha, but this was still a very good film. It lacks the emotion of Von Trier's newer stuff, though, which was sad. But I really liked it, reguardless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unjustly Neglected Masterpiece
Zentropa is one of those rare films of which it truly can be said:it's unlike any movie you will see. It's a bloody shame this is not currently available as this is one of those films that deserves a much wider audience. As a personal aside, everyone I've shared this film with - and what a widely disparate assortment of folk that is - has been astonished by it.von Triers pays homage to the great expressionist filmmakers who went before him and he does them proud.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Artistic and Enigmatic Tale of a Broken Europe...
The voice of Max von Sydow hypnotizes the audience by stating, "You will now listen to my voice..." as he continuous to count to ten, which pulls the viewer into a nightmarish dream.Simultaneously the opening shot of railroad tracks is flashing by, which visually puts the viewer in a trance as the screen turns black. This beginning incites the audience participation as the film definitely requires a high level of cognitive participation, unlike most films made where the story is driven by the scripted dialogue.Zentropa becomes a visual and aural journey that mesmerizes the audience in a highly artistic manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1.1 "Midnight on the Firing Line" and 1.2 "Soul Hunter"
This VHS tape offers up the first two episodes of "Babylon 5" if you do count the two parts of "The Gathering" as the pilot episode(s) for the science fiction series that went on the air a decade ago. These two episodes define the basic division that exists with "Babylon 5" stories between diplomatic squabbles and visitors to the station causing trouble:4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start to Babylon 5
These early Babylon 5 episodes offer tantalizing glimpses into what will unfold during the series. In "Midnight on the Firing Line" newly arrived Lieutenant Commander Ivanova (Claudia Christian) aids Commander Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) in two separate crises affecting Babylon 5; the Narn attack on the Centauri colony of Ragesh III and a vicious attack by raiders. Both crises will loom large throughout the course of Babylon 5's first season. In "Soul Hunter" a psychotic Soul Hunter arrives on Babylon 5, intent on collecting the soul of a prominent individual. Newly arrived medical chief Doctor Franklin (Richard Biggs) plays an important part in this episode. We also learn a bit more about the mysterious Minbari ambassador Delenn's (Mira Furlan) past.

3-0 out of 5 stars Two reasonable early episodes
Midnight on the Firing Line is a step up from the series pilot. Although still flawed in many respects, it has much more to recommend it. Michael O'Hare is still the weak link in Babylon 5's acting entourage, but thankfully he is much improved from the first installment. Newcomer Cladia Christian suffers from a few early jitters too, but manages. Although Tamlyn Tomita (Babylon 5's first second in command) was less rough around the edges, Christian begins to stake out the future personality of her character nicely. In addition, both Andrea Thompson (Talia Winters) and Stephen Furst (Vir) do credible jobs in their maiden outings. The make-up, however, is a small step backwards from previously and G'Kar's character suffers visibly in more than one scene. The editing too continues to be too quick, especially on the front end of a camera switch from character to character. On the plus side, the plot is thoughtful and plausible, suffering from only one small improbability at the end which is used to wrap up the story. Soul Hunter is another positive step for the Babylon 5 universe. The story is again slow and the ending for the third time in three tries is flawed, but the potential for the series is on full display here. One of the strongest aspects of the Babylon 5 series is its incorporation of religion into the future, whether human or alien, positive or negative, superficial or thought provoking. Soul Hunter only dips its toe into the waters here, and rather obliquely at that, but here it is enough. This show marks the first appearance of Dr. Franklin (Richard Biggs) and in this instance his addition is mostly positive. The editing, too, is much improved from earlier episodes. Kudos to SkipRobinson. Things are getting better. Stay tuned. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jaime Pressly: Suductress Extraordinaire
The star of this film, Jamie Pressly, has recently been commended for her acting ability. In early 2006 she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in the TV comedy series "My Name is Earl."Also, in early October, 2006, she was guest host on NBC's Saturday Night Live.Ms. Pressly has the unique ability, by changing her facial expressions (using mostly her large blue eyes and mouth) to instantly transform her appearance from a beautiful seductress to a freaked out psycho.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jamie Pressly. Nice!
I rented this movie for the same reason many males do. Jaime Pressly (the redneck chick from such movies as Joe Dirt and the TV show My Name is Earl) made her film debut with this direct-to-video sequel. And in this film, she takes off her clothes. Believe me, that's the reason that 97% of the people who watch this movie watch it for. The other 3% is people who are forced to watch it with those people. I've never seen the first Poison Ivy (which starred Drew Barrymore) or the 2nd (Alyssa Milano); But, this plot is relatively connected. The movie begins at a large house, probably in California. Two young sisters named Ivy and Violet are playing with their friend Joy, while their mother (who is the house, housekeeper and looks way too young to have children...And way way too hot) has sex with some guy. The owner of the house (Joy's father) comes home and catches them in the act. Apparently Joy's father, Ivan and Ivy and Violet's Mom are having an affair; Which Ivan's wife finds out about. Flash forward a few years later. Ivan (Michael Des Barres) is divorced, Joy (Megan Edwards) is all grown up and engaged to Michael (Greg Vaughan). Everything's perfect is Suburbia. Then Violet (Pressly) shows up on their doorstep with seemingly innocent intentions. Of course, the viewer knows that isn't so. Soon, Violet begins working a mind game (that like so many movie mind games would never work in real life) in an attempt to ruin Joy's life. Technically, she has a motive. But, she's kind of taking it out on the wrong person. While the writer does make Violet slightly crazy, she's obviously not insane...So, why doesn't she ever think about what she's doing? Nothing I've written so far even really matters. Let's face it, most of you are not going to rent it for the story. The movie, for a direct-to-video movie, isn't that bad actually. Sure, the story's pretty stupid...But its entertaining and Pressly bares near all. This movie is not a masterpiece; If you're not a testosterone driven guy, you probably won't like this movie that much. If you don't like Jaime Pressly, you probably won't like this movie that much. But, if you do like Pressly. See this movie NOW!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rewind, Play...Star Trek!Rewind, Play...Star Trek!
Plot:The Enterprise is exploring the Typhon Expanse and encounters a temporal disortion.Suddenly, power goes out and a ship appears....impact in 36 seconds.Despite all attempts, the ships collide and after a couple dozen spins, our favorite starship explodes with all hands (and feet). And this is the teaser!
5-0 out of 5 stars "All hands abandon ship..." BOOM!!!
The above line, and subsequent collision, still chills after repeated viewings as it did when the episode aired over fifteen years ago.Although the destruction of the Enterprise is fiction, the line resonates almost as much as did the real-life "Go with throttle up" spoken to the crew of the ill-fated Challenger.5-0 out of 5 stars A truly entertaining episode...
Directing "Cause and Effect" couldn't have been an easy task, but Jonathan Frakes does incredibly well. The Enterprise seems to be trapped in a time loop that starts with the crew playing poker, and ends in the ship colliding with another ship and exploding. How does this happen? How can they prevent it? Watching the episode, you'd think some of the repeated scenes would get old. They don't. In fact, it gets more interesting as the crew begins to realize something's wrong. The ending is terrifically smart and this episode is a TNG classic. ... Read more

Rita Heyworth (1918-1987) , Gene Kelly (1912-1996) , Phil Silvers (1911-1985) , and Eve Arden (1909-1990) stars in in this lavishly produced musical about a nighclub dancer from Brooklyn who leaves her sweatheart after winning a Cover Girl Contest -only to learn that fame and fortune are no substitute for true love . COVER GIRL proved to be a turning pointin the history of the Hollywood musical . For the first time , the songs were not merely strung together , but were themself vital elements , serving to move the story forward . COVER GIRL wasalso a major turning point in the career of Gene Kelly , as it established himas virtouso Choreographer as well as a major dancing talent , The techically revolutionary "after ego" dancein which Kelly dances with himself , provided the inspiration of his later "Singing in the rain1952) numer and was , according to Kelly , the most difficult film sequence sheever done . COVER GIRL also cemented Hayworths reputation as Hollywood most talented female dancer . Betty Grable (1916-1973) herself admitted that Heyworth dances rings around here .

4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas in Hawaii! However you may end up babysitting...
I rarely missed an episode of 'Magnum P.I.' when it ran on primetime in the eighties and I still occasion to watch an episode on cable TV when the opportunity presents itself. The four person cast of Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger Mosley and Larry Manetti worked together excellently; equally compelling were the recurring characters, whether from Magnum's days in the Navy intelligence or Higgins' days in the British military each was a brilliantly conceived foil to both of them. That series chemistry is present here in this Christmas themed episode that revolves around a recently acquired Gauguin painting and a group of five preteen schoolgirls.5-0 out of 5 stars The best show ever!
I really liked this Magnum p.i. I found it to be very interesting and also it is packed with alot of action and adventure! It was all the things I love in a show.

This Magnum, p.i. episode is from the first year of the series and is a gem.Great for repeated viewing around Christmas time.I bought all six Magnum videos that were released several years back.I enjoy them all butwonder when they will eventually release all the episodes on tape.Thereis obviously a market for them.Well, since you can't find Magnum insyndication in the US at this time you better enjoy these videos. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Picard & the Federation make a collossal blunder
Recently promoted Lieutenant Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes), who was once the scourge of Starfleet and was once in a Federation prison has redeemed herself as an asset to both the Federation and to Picard, who as adopted her as one of his foster lost causes. In a previous episode, Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) befriended the hostile ex-con and helped Ro to confide in Picard in preventing an all-out war with the Bajorans and the Cardassians.
5-0 out of 5 stars One man's terrorist is another man's saint!
Ensign Ro (Michelle Forbes) dons the garb of Federation spy as she infiltrates the Maquis, Federation colonists along the demilitarized zone dedicated to fight the Cardassians residing there.Ro's loyalties to her new comrades and the mission are tested throughout the episode and her final decision makes for a thoughtful, if predictable, denouement.5-0 out of 5 stars The Return of Ro Laren and our Introduction to the Maquis
"Preemptive Strike" features the return of Ro Laren, promoted to Lieutenant and back from advanced tactical training.Obviously something is in the wind. Then Admiral Nechayev visits the Enterprise to brief Captain Picard on what has happened to the Federation colonists who remained in Cardassian space after the peace treaty was signed (see "Journey's End," Episode 172).Apparently the colonists are having second thoughts about living under Cardassian rule and have formed resistance groups known as the Maquis, whose actions have become more and more aggressive, thereby threatening the existing peace.Nechayev wants Ro to go under cover and infiltrate the Maquis, her reputation in Starfleet serving as a cover story.Ro successfully joins the Maquis, becoming very good friends with the leader of her cell. With the information she has gathered, Picard plans to bait a trap for the Maquis with a convoy. However, when the Cardassians murder some colonists, Ro finds herself remembering the Cardassian occupation of Bajor and having second thoughts about where her loyalties lie.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The mysteries of Epsilon 3 and Babylon 4 cleared up
The conclusion of a two-part storyline and one of the most important first season episodes of "Babylon 5" are what you find on this videotape.Episode 19, "A Voice in the Wilderness, Part 2" (Written by J. Michael Straczynski, Aired August 3, 1994) finds Commander Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) having to deal with a dispute over Epsilon 3, the planet nearby Babylon 5.It turns out the place is a treasure trove of advanced alien technology and the next thing we know the Hyperion, an Earth Alliance heavy cruiser, arrives and Captain Ellis Pierce (Ron Canada) who has been ordered to get the alien technology before anyone else can.Suddenly an unknown alien ship enters through the jumpgate and scans the station's language and translation files. They claim that the planet belongs to their people and that they have been searching for it for 500 years.Their captain gives Sinclair and Pierce ten hours to leave the area or they will take the planet by force, at which point Pierce gives the aliens nine hours to get out of the way.Meanwhile, Ambassador Delenn (Mira Furlan), her old mentor Draal (Louis Turenne), and Londo (Peter Jurasik) finding themselves strange allies in an effort to help Varn (Curt Lowens), the alien who was found connected to the machines at the heart of the planet. 5-0 out of 5 stars Two of Babylon 5 finest episodes from Season 1
The exciting conclusion to "A Voice in the Wilderness Part I" is a wonderful mixture of adventure and intrigue. EarthForce heavy cruiser Hyperion arrives to take control of the advanced technology discovered by Commander Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Lieutenant Commander Ivanova (Claudia Christian) deep within the rocky crust of Epsilon Three. Sinclair and Ivanova return with a mysterious alien, Varn (Curt Lowens), who is the dying keeper of the Great Machine on Epsilon Three. Unknown to Sinclair and Ivanova, he has appeared before Sinclair and Ambassador Mollari (Peter Jurasik), asking for their help. And soon he calls out to Delenn (Mira Furlan) and her mentor Draal (Louis Turenne). Meanwhile some of Varn's people have returned, threatening to destroy Babylon 5 and the cruiser Hyperion, whose captain (Ron Canada) is ready to call their bluff. What follows is an exciting conclusion as memorable as most of those found in the great episodes of subsequent seasons. In "Babylon Squared" space station Babylon 4 is pulled forward in time. Sinclair and Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) mount a rescue mission to evacuate Bablyon 4's skeleton crew. Aboard the station, they meet with its commander, Major Krantz (Kent Broadhurst), who introduces them to the enigmatic alien Zathras (Tim Choate). Zathras warns them to leave Babylon 4 soon; the station will become the command center in a great war. In both episodes are important signs and portents that point to the forthcoming Shadow War and the human civil war which follows.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1.17 "Legacies" & 1.18 "A Voice in the Wilderness, Part 1"
Be forewarned that you only get "A Voice in the Wilderness Part 1" in this pair of episodes from the first season of "Babylon 5" and you can make up your own mind as to whether this bothers you or if you prefer the "Farscape" approach which puts episodes out of order so that you do not have to make two purchases to get both parts of a story. 4-0 out of 5 stars Important Clues To What Unfolds Later On Babylon 5
Admittedly, this video is a mixed bag with regards to quality, yet those who are interested in "Babylon 5" will consider it essential viewing. The first episode "Legacies" gives an important look into the complexities of Minbari society. It's followed by "A Voice in the Wilderness, Part I", which should have been offered together with its sequel. In "A Voice..." Commander Sinclair makes an important discovery regarding what lurks beneath the surface of Epsilon 3, and how it may affect space station Babylon 5's future. Sinclair's discovery will have important implications for the Shadow War destined to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still fun to watch.
In "Legacies", the body of a deceased Minbari Leader who is going through B5 is stolen. The interesting part of this episode is the cultural differences of the various Minbari casts.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Faerie Tale Theatre: Rip Van Winkle
Atmospheric and delightful version of the Washington Irving classic from Faerie Tale Theatre. Francis Ford Coppola creates a spellbinding film with Harry Dean Stanton turning in a great performance as the man who liked to sleep alot! Talia Shire is wickedly funny as Rip's wife, Wilma. Alot of people probably think the same thing as I do, that the sets are a little too fake such as the sheet used for water when the goblins talk about their misfortunate shipwreck. Overall however, it's another excellent episode. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Defiant helps the Jem'Haddar turn on some renegades
A Jem'Haddar raiding party steals equipment from DS9 and escapes into the wormhole with Sisko giving chase in the Defiant. When they locate a damaged Jem'Haddar warship, Sisko beams abaord six soldiers and their Vorta leader, Weyoun. From Weyoun they learn that the Dominion has discovered an Iconian gateway device (you might remember this from the "Contagion" episode of STNG), but that the scientists sent to investigate the gateway have rebelled.Weyoun wants Sisko's assistance in destroying the gateway and the renegade Jem'Haddar.Of course, the Federation cannot afford to have any Jem'Haddar in control of a intergalactic gateway, so Sisko agrees."To the Death" is an average DS9 episode, where the action is halfway decent, but I have to admit that I do not understand what the Dominion is up to.We have been waiting about TWO YEARS for the Dominion to attack the Alpha Quadrant through the wormhole, and now all they send is a raiding party? Also, it seems too early in the game to turn the fierce Jem'Haddar soldiers, the killing machines who never sleep or eat, into drug addicted malcontents.I never understood the need to undo the blind obedience to the Founders idea; after all, it works for the Vortas. In the final analysis, this one gets four stars because of Weyoun, who is certainly the greatest sycophant in Star Trek history.

4-0 out of 5 stars To the death... well 'til I'm tired!
Deep Space Nine is attacked by a group of Jem'hadar would steal someequipment and supplies. Sisko is outraged and takes the Defiant into theGamma Quadrant to stop them, determined to send a message to the Foundersthat Starfleet will not stand-by and let Dominion ships go unpunished. Oncein the Gamma Quadrant the Defiant finds a crippled Jem'hadar warship with aVorta onboard, Weyoun. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Languid Chills...
Vadim's take on Sheridan le Fanu's tale Carmilla is a somewhat languid chiller, updated to modern (1960) Italy and starring the lovely Annette Stroyberg as Carmilla and Elsa Martinelli as Georgia.Pitched somewhere between the supernatural and the psychological Vadim draws us into a lushly coloured but oddly crepuscular landscape in which Carmilla may indeed be possessed by the spirit of her vampire ancestor Millarca or alternatively a depressive caught in the spell of an overwhelming romantic imagination.Mel Ferrer is Leopoldo, the less-than-sympathetic, almost sexist object of her spurned affections. The film's reputation hinges on two scenes of intense dream-like claustrophobia; the first is a rain-soaked kiss in a hot-house replete with a heady lesbian suggestion and the second is a nightmare in monochrome and red inflicted upon Georgia toward the climax.Beautiully filmed but terribly marred (in fact almost ruined) by the studio 'need' to engage the Exposition Fairy, destroying Vadim's careful mood with Carmilla's constant voice-overs needlessly 'explaining' to the audience exactly what is happening. Deserving of a DVD Director's re-cut (removing all the awful exposition, ala Bladerunner) and presented in its original Technirama format, no doubt something not very likely to happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FILM BUT...
This is definitley one of the best horror films i have ever seen. It is beautiful, lush, and a bit scary at some parts. Its more of a gothic romance than a 60's horror. I only wish they would transfer this awesome film onto DVD someday soon... its to good to be stuck on VHS. I'm giving it 5 stars for the movie itself, not the fact its on VHS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vadim has a vision...
Vadim walked a very thin line at a time when it was very unconventional to, 'push the envelope' as one might say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Captain? What are you doing in a shutle craft?
Plot:Upon discovering a Federation shuttle craft floating about helplessly in space, the Enterprise brings it in for investigation.Riker and Worf look at the shuttle and it's identity is, "NCC 1701 USS Enterprise Shuttlecraft 05".Interestingly (and a little disconcertingly), the same exact shuttle is also in the bay, in perfect shape.Well, as if things couldn't get anymore freaky, inside the shuttle is...Captain Picard. It appears the shuttle is from the future (approx. 6 hours ahead) with our dear captain inside of it.Well, when they play a recording from the shuttle, it shows the Enterpise being destroyed in some sort of space tornado...six hours from now.Meanwhile, the future Picard has been placed in sick bay. He's unable to communicate, his physical signs are all out of normalcy, and Consuler Troi indicates that he's terrified (due to the time distortion thing).6 hours later, the Enterprise is caught is space vortex, and now they must find out what actually happened before it's too late.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Two Picards
This episode was one of the first TNG episodes that delt with time travel. And it was pulled off really well. The plot is the Enterprise picking up a Federation shuttlecraft. When they discover that the shuttlecraft is an identical match to a shuttlecraft that is already in the shuttlebay, they discover an somewhat identical Captain Picard. The reason was that the Enterprise had attacked by a vortex that was also attacking Picard himself. Which led him to the conclusion that the vortex would leave the Enterprise alone, if he left the ship. It turned out that the Enterprise would be destroyed and the shuttlecraft with the past captain then was hit with an amazing force and sent hurdling through time. The kicker is that the event occurs six hours after the present Enterprise discovers him. Will the Enterprise meet up with this vortex "again"? Another splended performance by Patrick Stewart playing a dual of himself ala Brent Spiner. We also learn that Riker loves to cook. On of my favorite second season episodes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Crew remains loyal even after the Enterprise is destroyed
Stories involving alterations in time are a staple in science fiction overall and the Star Trek section in particular. There is a wide variation in quality, some leave a lot to be desired and some are excellent. This one is pretty good, and involves the destruction of the Enterprise.
