5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty & the Beast
I liked this succesion when I was a little kid and i didn`t know the name of of this succession. So i thought that may be I could see that again becase I loved it best of all. Then the show was gone and Ididn`t hear anything about it and we hadn`t internet at That time.Specially i liked the song and it Was so romantic and I wish if I could see That again. If you could show me That serial, Ill be very gratefull for you because I think Beauty & the Beast is still the best succession in the world.5-0 out of 5 stars The "Beast" emerges!
When Vincent's old friend returns with a vengence he gets caughtup in an investigation pursued by Catherine.Despite Vincent's warning, Catherine continues the risky case only to be shot by Vincent's enemy. This results in a harsh Vincent, but a sweet ending. Best Quote: "If you die, so do I."

3-0 out of 5 stars "A Life Without You Would be Unbearable"
So says Vincent to Catherine as he frets over her safety after she takes on a case that involves organized crime. The episode has some virtues. There are some nice moments between Vincent and Catherine, and the villainis a little more interesting than most, owing to the fact that he hasboyhood ties to Vincent. But it is not one of the more plausible episodes. In one particularly ludicrous moment, Vincent abandons a bleeding andunconscious Catherine (who has been shot!) on the steps outside a hospitalso he can pursue vengeance on those who shot her.Wouldn't the toppriority be getting medical care for Catherine?I would think that gettingher medical attention would be more important than concealing his identity, even, if it came to that. How long might she lie out there unattended?Ofcourse (as luck would have it!) a medical person saunters out of thehospital right after Vincent leaves and immediately takes responsibilityfor the situation.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I just wanted to get my 1 star recorded as payback to this movie for wasting my time, although I did start doing other things halfway through. The only positive thing I can say is that the actor portraying Blevins, the third wheel, did a fine job. When he wasn't onscreen I was wondering what he was up to and wishing I could be spending my time with him, instead of the other two dullards we are unfortunately stuck with.Penelope Cruz adds zero to the movie.Don't know if it's due to editing or acting and don't really care. Can you tell i'm disgusted? If you're a movie fan or a western fan you should be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars First of the trilogy
This book shows McCArthy at his descriptive best- his writing is almost lyrical. A beautifully written tale of modern cowboy life, he knows what he is writing about as if he did it all himself. You must read this novel as the first part of the trilogy of this modern western style- but don't think "cowboys" as in the old Zane Gray days! These are all together other.

5-0 out of 5 stars The necessary leap from the innocence to experience!
A young boy will live in own flesh, an experience `s lesson, when his mother decides to sell their Ranch in Texas, 1949. That personal decision will lead him to make a decisive choice that will mark his life forever.

Editorial Review

Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars chivalry is dead
Bertrand Tavernier's indictment of knighthood and chivalry gone sour-- is a must-see to anyone who thinks the 12th century was a time of saintly knights on a quest to make the world safe for Christianity.
4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Recreation of the Middle Ages
Beatrice awaits her father and brothers return from war. The family fortune has dwindledbut Beatrice looks after the castle and its surrounding farmlands the best she can. These early scenes have a beauty and magic to them and Julie Delpy's etheral beauty seems perfectly at home in this setting. Her world is charmed with wonder and she looks destined to live the romantic life of princess. It seems all that is missing is a father to restore the castle to its former glory. The longer he is gone the more Beatrice idealises this man she never knew. When word reaches her that he is on his way back she is ecstatic. Meanwhile we see what kind of man he is. From the first glimpse Tavernier gives us of him we know he is not what Beatrice imagines him to be.As they welcome the father and his band of soldiers into the castle and feed him someone asks to hear of his exploits...a silence fills the room. Reluctantly he begins to tell a tale quite different than the one the listeners expected to hear. We soon realize a more disillusioned man never walked the earth than this man. He paces the halls of the castle like an animal hungry for prey. Nothing is sacred to him, nothing safe from him. Religion nor family hold any sway over him, he takes what he wants & the biggest prize in the castle is Beatrice. This homecoming begins to feel like a state of seige. It is not long before the prize is forcibly claimed. 4-0 out of 5 stars It's not all Prince Charmings and Happily Ever Afters
This movie disturbed me but was still unbelievably compelling to watch as the three main characters, the father, the son, and the daughter wage an internal war upon each other.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The film's serviceable but maybe not the best
Comic book movies is another trend in Hollywood that's slowly starting to die out. Like horror movie remakes and ultra-gory new ones to the CGI-animated ones, Hollywood always goes to what's the next big thing. Granted there is the occasional oddball that completely gets a cult following but you mainly see a trend and familiarity. When X-Men became a surprise hit, everything got bought up. Turns out though that Hellboy was actually a pet project for years by Guillermo del Toro, director of films like Blade II and the recent Pan's Labyrinth. Upon watching the film, you get the feeling that it's not outright terrible like Daredevil, it's just you were almost hoping it'd be a tad better.
4-0 out of 5 stars not perfect but good enough
Let's be blunt, the movie is, in essence, a little lumbering and flawed and has a rather odd climax. The beginning is overlong and vaguely too fantastical, but once you realize this is a very different world, a comic book really, and normal rules don't apply, it can be forgiven. In fact most of the flaws can be forgiven because of Ron Perlman and what he brought to the picture.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great
An overall good movie. In a day in which every other comic book is getting its own movie, this is better then most.

Editorial Review

Forefather of Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean, Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot--a recurring character in several of his movies--is a blithely clumsy troublemaker, an insouciant twit who leaves uproar in his wake without being aware of it. Trying to describe this 1953 comedy is next to impossible except to say it is a series of vignettes at a vacation resort, with the distracted Hulot providing a lot of laughs. Tati directs, and in a way what that really means is that he composes this movie with a perfect eye and ear for the comic possibilities in everything: composition, lighting, minimal marble-mouth dialogue, certain sounds (a duck call, a door repeatedly opening and shutting). This is a superior work that ranks among all-time classic comedies. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars passed ages-passed showcases
I simply spent time watchnig this French response to a Chaplin-style but non-silent motion picture.
3-0 out of 5 stars Hulot
Jacques Tati is one of those guys with a natural gift for the physical gag. This DVD features his holiday, as the title would imply. We meet some vacationers at a beach resort, and the filmmaker revels in that. Then Tati appears on the scene, M. Hulot in all his glory, and wreaks havoc. I thought it might have been a little slow getting started, but it was building. It's a marvelous film.
5-0 out of 5 stars M. Hulot On Vacation: A Beautiful, Gentle Film By Jacques Tati
Chaos follows Monsieur Hulot like tin cans tied to your ankle. He's a lanky, awkward, well-intentioned innocent to whom things just naturally happen, and to whom things happen to those around him. Hulot is the creation of Jacques Tati, a genius of film if there ever was one. Tati creates movies of endless sight gags, but that term is too coarse to describe what Tati does. With Hulot and those he encounters, things are never what they seem. The usual and the commonplace grow into sources of humor that sometimes are quick and sometimes are carefully nurtured. What makes discussing Tati difficult, at least for me, is that the more I try to describe what he does, the more mundane it seems. I'll show you. A small child gives some money to an ice cream vendor and receives two cones. The child then carefully climbs the too-steep stairs to the entrance of a small hotel, carefully, carefully checking at each step to be sure he's got the cones upright so the ice cream won't fall off. The scene is funny in a good-natured way because of the child's intensity. Or Hulot encounters a kayak on the beach, sits down in it and notices a pot of paint next to him. He picks up the brush and starts daubing. The waves come in, the pot drifts out, then drifts back in time for Hulot, without looking, to get more paint on the brush. The pot drifts out again on the next wave, but then drifts back on the other side of the kayak. Sounds dull to me, but Tati turns it into an exquisite moment of good intentions, mystifying discovery and immaculate timing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The English Matron Conquers the Palace.
I'm always fascinated with books & movies that deal with the interaction of subjects from different cultures such as "Shogun", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Dances with Wolves" or "Broken Arrow".
1-0 out of 5 stars I don't know why many people gave it 5 stars
I didn't even watch the whole movie because it hurt to watch Jodie punched a blow of disrespect to someone of higher status (the royal family). If you have any respect for your elders, your grandparents, and especially royalty, please don't watch this film.
5-0 out of 5 stars suprisingly good, worth watching and owning
And here is another movie which I decided not to watch when it first came out. I just watched it on dvd and it was a beautiful film. The scenery, the custumes, and the palace of Siam was just breath-taking. And the characters were very memorable, and there are plenty of them in this movie. I normally don't like Jody Foster, but she was great in this movie. Chow Yun Fat was great as well. He is a great Chinese actor and this movie reveals his charisma and ability to carry a movie better than Crouching Tiger. I have completely misjudged the film before watching it. This movie, contrary to my expectation, is very different than "King and I" movie of the 60's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome To The Night Gallery
Those opening words by writer, host and all round creative genius Rod Serling paved the way for viewers to enjoy many intriguing stories of mystery, mayhem and the supernatural during the three year run of the classic series "Night Gallery". A brain child of Serling who had earlier been responsible for the creation of one of televisions most innovative and best remembered series in the classic "The Twilight Zone","Night Gallery was a regular anthology series on NBC that told stories of macabre happenings with surreal characters in often out of this world situations. This particular TV movie was the original pilot for the series and aired in 1969. It contains three individual stories and was adapted by Rod Serling from his own short story collection titled "The Season to be Wary". While varying in quality with the third story by far the weakest, all are rich in suspense and detail with stories one and two boasting top flight guest stars in engrossing teleplays.5-0 out of 5 stars Flashforward: 1969-1972

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
I'm not really a fan of musicals, but two seconds into this movie I was hooked. The story is cute, I think it's funny how Judy reads too much into everything (like her father's 'affair') and kind of sad how all Carol wants is the affection of her father. The songs are great, Carmen Miranda is stunning. A great family movie from yester-year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie From Beginning to End
After you finish watching this movie you have a happy and warm feeling inside. It's wholesome entertainment at its best yet it's still apart from the rest and not at all typical.

4-0 out of 5 stars "I think men are awful! Even the ones you think are wonderful..."
A delightful entry in the Jane Powell cannon, "A Date with Judy" is a sunny, happy movie with fun songs, bright technicolor photography, and an impossibly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor in her pre-screechy days.

Editorial Review

After Elvis Presley got out of the army in 1960, he was instantly ushered into this Paramount movie about an Oklahoma singer who (surprise) gets out of the army and wants to open a club. Making a potentially lucrative bet that he can seduce a cabaret singer (Juliet Prowse), Elvis instead falls in love. Refurbished from his rockabilly roots into a slicker model for early-'60s pop, the Elvis of this movie is the one who made almost 30 more just like it. The songs include the title track, plus "It's Not Good Enough for You," "Tonight Is So Right for Love," and "Wooden Heart." Directed by Norman Taurog, a studio veteran who made his first film in 1928 and worked numerous times with Presley as well as Jerry Lewis. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis with Julia Prowse
As Elvis once said this woman has a body that would make a preacher stamp his foot. Her dancing (as a professional dancer myself) is esquisite, she moves like a cat, and Elvis was as charming and charismatic as always, I enjoyed this movies when it first came out and never tire of watching it, and am going to purchase it.

To me, this is one of the very best Elvis Presley musical extravaganza. Briliant movie - loved all the songs. What a superb DVD!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ivanhoe Available
This is the best Ivanhoe available, and I believe most people who have been waiting for its release on DVD would agree. It was an excellent effort at historical accuracy for 1952, although it took liberties with the original storyline. Considering the amount of antisemitism that the Walter Scott book contained, that's probably just as well. Despite those changes, it's still more faithful in spirit to the original than any other Ivanhoe film. A really neat capability, now that it's out on DVD, is to freeze-frame the painted backdrops to get a better look at them. When Ivanhoe guides the Norman knights to his family castle in the beginning of the film, for example, there's a wonderful rendition of an early Motte and Bailey castle circa 1200. Where the Motte is a plain stone tower on a large mound, with a great house (or hall) in the bailey where everyone lived most of the time and had nightly feasts, such as the one the Normans barged in on. You could easily imagine yourself looking at Launceston, or one of several other Norman Motte and Baileys that still exist in England, France, and Italy. Of course, there were things out of place for the late 1100s, but it was close enough to help the viewer feel like 'you were there'. The camera work seemed excellent, being one of the first wide screen cinema-scope pictures. Stunts were basic by today's standards, with some sequences, like the arrows firing against the castle's gatehouse, appearing fairly comical. Most characters were above average in their acting abilities, although Elizabeth Taylor seemed to recite her lines in a machine-like tone at times. The music was well written, however it was magnetically recorded on monophonic film and sounds tinny and flat when compared to the Dolby THX encoded movies we're all used to hearing today. Certainly not in the same league with modern films like Lord Of The Rings, but for 1950's technology, it rates a full 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars High adventure in Glorious Technicolor!
Ivanhoe is easily the most glorious of MGM's British swashbucklers made with blocked funds designed to beat a short-lived embargo on US films being shown in the UK. It's also one of many roles intended for Stewart Granger that instead ended up revitalizing Robert Taylor's career by default. He's not exactly the perfect choice for the part, but he does well enough even if he is outshone by George Sanders de Bois Guilbert, hopelessly in unrequited love with nice Jewish girl Elizabeth Taylor who is herself hopelessly in unrequited love with Ivanhoe. Indeed, Sanders manages to make him both ruthless and still worthy of pity. That he does is as much down to the quality of ?neas MacKenzie's adaptation and Noel Langley and Marguerite Roberts' fine script, which strips away Scott's often inaccessible wordiness to find the human story at its heart, adding an intelligent portrait of anti-Semitism along the way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sister Acts
Earlier this year I was able to watch "The Adventures of Robin Hood" for the first time.I had heard that it was considered something of a classic for its' time but, frankly, I thought it was a bit much and rather over-rated.I mention this because it was the first movie that came to mind after I watched "Ivanhoe" the other night. They are quite similar in a number of ways, not the least of which is to tell the story of the efforts to bring King Richard the Lion-Hearted back to his throne.Needless to say, the ultimate bad guy in both films was King John. The local bad guys, the damsels in distress, the martial competitions, etc. give a sense that the same story is told with different actors portraying different characters.

Pamela Sue Martin kicked off the goody two shoes from her Nancy Drew image to play the feisty farm girl with Hollywood dreams who walked out of the Biograph on the arm of John Dillinger the night he was killed by the FBI. John Sayles wrote this depression-era gangster drama, loosely based on the real story of Polly Hamilton (renamed Polly Franklin for the film), and stuffs plenty of sex and social commentary around a surprisingly faithful recounting of the real-life event. Martin transforms from naive young thing to brassy hustler without losing her sweetness, and Robert Conrad is quite the gentleman hoodlum as Dillinger, but the unsung hero of the piece is Robert Forster, uncredited but indelible as a hit man who falls for fallen woman Polly. Colorful, action packed, and full of underdog spunk, this is exploitation moviemaking with a populist sensibility. Read more

Quentin Tarantino seems like one of the biggest f@#k-sticks in Hollywood. He always cameos in his films - playing the weed that he most likely is in real life - and loves putting so much apparent drivel into the dialogue that you wonder if you're watching an R-rated Seinfeld episode.Yet the bulk of the actors he chooses to deliver these sermons are so charismatic and talented that you're still thoroughly entertained while waiting for a point, if indeed one exists. And when that point invariably emerges it's full of unmistakable insight and humour, which makes it all worthwhile.5-0 out of 5 stars Pulp Fiction

5-0 out of 5 stars How I fell in love with Shirley MacLaine
Considering all that has happened since, it becomes easy to forget just how great Martin and Lewis were in the early to mid fifties. This was the first of their films that I saw and, to me anyway, it remains the best and a showcase for just how much fun they were. An additional plus is a very young Shirley MacLaine, who even then displayed an incredible screen presence in what could have been a throwaway role. She outshines Dorothy Malone and set my five-year-old heart on fire. They don't make movies like this any more and that's a shame. Shirley, wherever you are, I've been waiting.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 8 year old's favorite rental!
This movie was a ton of fun.The classic scene "Bat Lady & Fat Lady" scene between Martin & Lewis made the picture.A very young (and quite attractive) Shirley MacLaine adds to the picture with a bit of wit.5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you don't like Martin and Lewis-
It is difficult not to like this brilliant Frank Tashlin film. He did cartoons in the 1940's, and he adds surreal cartoon gags here as he did in his other under-rated film THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT. Made when Washington was investigating pin up girls like Bettie Page and horror comic books, the subplot and plea in support of kids comics was very rare for the era. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best
Harold Lloyd's treatment of the romantic comedy is, indeed, underappreciated, but if anything that makes enjoying his work even more appropriate.Girl Shy is my favorite of his, not only because of the fine acting and apparent originality, but also because it contains one of the most beautiful scores in film history - Robert Israel's music is superb.Of course, moods swing in this classic, ranging down to despair and up to the heights of ecstasy. Suspenseful hope, so lacking in many of today's pictures, is here as well, as he puts the pieces of the check together to discover just how many 0s it contains.5-0 out of 5 stars Harold Lloyd's Poor Boy seeks the heart of a Rich Girl
"Girl Shy" is one of the most uneven of the featured films made by Harold Lloyd, the most forgotten of the great silent comedians.Lloyd plays Harold Meadows, The Poor Boy, who falls for Mary Buckingham, the Rich Girl, played by Jobyna Ralston. As usual Lloyd's character is extremely shy and bashful, but this time around he is also a stutterer, and for some reason the actor seems uncomfortable in the part. The film has one of Lloyd's best race sequences at the end and also an exquisitely tender and poignant scene when Harold is sitting in a rowboat, daydreaming of Mary, unaware that the reflection he sees in the water is really her, standing on a bridge thinking about him.But the fantasy scenes inspired by the book Harold is reading, "The Secret of Making Love," are definitely at odds with the overall tone of the film."My Vampire" and "My Flapper" are funny on their own terms, but are ironically too realistic given the rest of film.Still, the best parts of this film are classic Lloyd and more than make up for any perceived shortcomings. You know, only about half of Lloyd's silent comedies are currently available on videotape, when it is obvious every single one of them should be out where they can be seen by new generations of fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best silent comedies I've ever seen.
Harold Lloyd made many great comedies, but "Girl Shy" is definitely one of the best. Not only is Harold painfully shy around girls, but he stutters when he gets nervous, and girls make him nervous. JobynaRalston is wonderful as Harold's true love, and the scene where he tries tomake her leave him because he's not worthy of her is a real tearjerker. Thescenes at the publisher where Harold tries to sell his book arehilarious--the office girls are so lively and it doesn't seem possible thatthis scene was shot more than 70 years ago. The final chase is aclassic--Harold uses horses, streetcars, trains, and anything else he canto rescue his girl from marrying a bigamist. A real treat to watch. ... Read more
