5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie & fast transaction!
I ordered the movie for a school project and they arrived in perfect condition with just enough time for me to do a movie psychology review on it. I got an A, so it was worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Graceful, warm, funny, and genuine.
I thoroughly enjoyed Phenomenon, which I found to be an unusually graceful, warm, and genuine movie.Sure, it had flaws, and one could take issue with a variety of departures from reality. But the characters genuinely care for each other and the dialoge and behavior carefully reflect that.I didn't try to take it too seriously, as I fell in love with George, the Dr., and Lace.George genuinely cares about his friends. The Dr., played wonderfully by the great Robert Duvall, understands people, and Lace is over the top sexy ( like some jewish women I have known...can Sedgwick be a jewish name?)I thought the writing was great. How about George teaching Nate the portuguese language?Marvelous! The little details and cinematography were very well done in this picture.Kudos to the writer, director, and the guys behind the cameras.
5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to shed a tear!
An extraordinary drama, Phenomenon, brings to the screen the story of a man who suddenly undergoes a major mental transformation allowing him to make use of abilities he never thought he had.

3-0 out of 5 stars Docudrama Suffers from Vagueness
This docudrama about Dietrich Bonhoeffer's wrestling with putting his Christian faith into action while living in a Nazi context suffers because it marginalizes Bonhoeffer's faith and instead plays up the politics of the German resistance movement to which he belonged. It falls far short of the power of the movie ROMERO, although Bonhoeffer's story is no less powerful than that of Archbishop Oscar Romero, murdered by the El Salvadorian fascists during mass for his outspoken commitment to Christ incarnate in the people of El Salvador. 5-0 out of 5 stars Bonhoeffer "Agent of Grace"
What can one say? This is the story of a upper class German who decided to revoke the Nazi's. A true story that demonstrates what courage can provoke in people. Although Bonhoeffer dies for his believes, he lives eternally in the human fabric. He was and is an asset. A must see film for students of German resistance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's get high and write some poems
I watched this movie in one of my classes and I loved it. I did not know that John Hannah was in it, and when I saw him in it I knew I would like it. It is a crazy drug adventure that is beautifully done. If you liked Fear & Loathing you will enjoy this movie, if not...don't bother. No, the movie is not historically accurate. I don't think they wanted it to be, but what they did do is make a great movie. The dialogue is great, and the acting superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pandaemonium is a stellar modern day adaptation of the life of Coleridge and Wordsworth!
Linus Roache and John Hannah shine in their portrayal of Samuel Coleridge and William Wordsworth (respectively). This BBC adaptation may alter some factual matters, as this usually is inherant within the dramatic confines of cinema to smooth out rough edges and sharpen the story's singular focus on the lives of the two poets and their accomplishments while leaving a few minor details unmentioned.
4-0 out of 5 stars a well-told story
a visionary, moving and powerful film that truly brings magnificent life to the poetry and a haunting sense of feeling for the characters. The acting is superb and the visuals are stunning. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Green Opal and Dove Affair, Both 1st Season Episodes
"The Green Opal Affair" and "The Dove Affair" are both 1st season episodes. Not one of my favorite episodes.4-0 out of 5 stars Green Opal Affair / Dove Affair
The Green Opal Affair and Dove Affair are great though I put only 4 stars since Illya doesn't come out almost at all! I wish he came out more often in the Green Opal Affair. The Green Opal Affair is interesting and I like the beginning where Illya looks at Napoleon when Napoleon is wearing his disguise and thick glasses. I loved Ricardo Montalban in the Dove Affair! He's such a great actor!

4-0 out of 5 stars Green Opal is a Great Episode- one of my favorites? Yes!
I remember this episode as a kid and loved it as an adult. It has this oriental guy in it that looks like "Oddjob" from Goldfinger that gives Solo nasty looks through the first half hour. Finally there is theend fight scene with Solo using a wrapped up towel as a weapon. It'sB&W (black and white) for all those post 60's people out there. But thevideo quality of this series is very good and if you are a fan of U.N.C.L.Erepeats this is one that you'll watch more than once. Even my nine year olddaughter gets a kick out of them too! ... "While You Were Sleeping" has become one of my very favorite movies, so easy to watch, or to relax and fall asleep to. I love Sandra Bullock movies. In this movie she is so innocent and falls in love with a man she has never spoken to but saves his life on the CTA.In the time that he is still in a coma his family, thinking she is their son's fiancee, fall in love with her.She inadvertantly falls in love with his brother.I jus love the Cinderella story line. She is fantastic as well as the family and especially Bill Pullman.

All along she notices the handsome man at the subway but was too scared to talk to him. Until his accident and a series of misunderstandings have his family believe that she is his fiancee. But the real love turns out to be the brother of her crush .... and when the feeing is mutual ... and her crush awakes from his coma .... she has two choices to contend with. Funny! 3-0 out of 5 stars Hedy, Hedy, and...Hedy.
There's only one reason why I'm even rating this basically forgotten movie, which is VERY dated, and really not any better than an old "Jungle Jim" episode. It would probably beof interest only to old movie buffs, and, as one of those dying creatures, I feel the old flicks are worthy of preservation and viewing. But, the only obvious reason to watch this film is Hedy LaMarr. She (in my opinion) was never really a great actress, but was known for her flawless beauty. Louie B. Mayer imported Hedwig Keisler from Austria, after she literally created a splash in the then unheard of famous nude swim scene in "Ecstasy", in the early 1930's. She was married at one time to a wealthy industrialist, socialized with the likes of Hitler, and had adventures right out of the most imaginative fiction. She also co-invented a device which was used for tracking enemy German subs during World War Two, a fact which only recently came to light.Though most of her films in her Hollywood career were un-distinguished, she became a top star in the M.G.M. pantheon, simply by virtue of her screen image, and received top billing with the likes of Gable and Spencer Tracy. Her career waned in the 1950's, with even less distinguished roles, and, save for the occasional snippet of various semi-scandalous news in the papers, she dissapeared. In this film, she is so lushly, outrageously, ridiculouslygorgeous, that she makes even someone like Liz Taylor in, for example, Cleopatra, look like a plain Jane. She is the ultimate "femme fatale", a role she basically never escaped. When I saw this movie as a kid... when Hedy comes out of the jungle and says "I am Tondeleyo", well... I think that's the moment when puberty kicked in, because I started shaking at the vision of this impossibly gorgeous, exotic darkbird of paradise. She is the epitome of the glamorous, other worldy mystique thatstars such as Garbo and Dietrich projected in1930's and '40's Hollywood, and Hedy in this film rivals even them. Hedy died just a few years ago, in relative obscurity, in a small Florida town. This little old lady was reportedlya good neighbor and friend to the few people she entrusted, who apparently were aware that their very elderly, sweet friend was, long...long ago, one of the legends of the Silver Screen. A real-life "Norma Desmond", though Hedy was, by all accounts, a happy lady in her final years, looked after by her loyal and protective friends. I can't honestly recommend buying this film for any reason other than viewing the raven haired, shimmering vision of un-equaled beauty that was Hedy LaMarr.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual, but likeable film
This movie has an excellent cast and an amusing, if unusual plot.It will probably offend the politically-correct crowd because the men in charge are all white, and the workers are all black.Plus, the term "white men" is used repeatedly. That's a no-no today.Hedy Lamarr is an eyeful as the sneaky and abusive Tandaleyo.Walter Pidgeon is a cranky, uptight leader of a rubber plantation.Richard Carlson (years before he starred in 1950's sci-fi movies) does a good job as his inexperienced, youthful assistant."White Cargo" is not a great movie, but it is fun to watch.

2-0 out of 5 stars White Cargo Doesn't Deliver
Let's be honest: this is not a good film.Hedy Lamar is beautiful as ever and great at slinking and pouting around the tropical set. But, unfortunately for Hedy and for Walter Pidgeon, none of the characters or the plot are complex or compelling.Hedy's character is banal and evil. The young Brit is just an unsympathetic fool.Walter Pidgeon is given a little more to work with, but it doesn't save the film. The film is worth seeing, by the way, for the vision of Hedy in skin-revealing attire.Just don't pay much for the privilege. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Keeping the Legend Alive
Tarzan Escapes begins with two of Jane's cousins entering the jungle to bring Jane back to civilization so they can inherit money left to her. When they find her, they see that life in the jungle is not as savage and horrible as they expected; the treehouse is very advanced in this film. There is hot and cold running water, a fireplace for cooking meat, and other luxuries. However, Jane agrees to help her family by returning despite how upset Tarzan becomes when he hears this news. He also begins to hate the tour guide with just reason; he plans to trap Tarzan and turn him into a freak for a circus show.
4-0 out of 5 stars THIRD MOVIE IN THE SERIES
Ok..I should qualify by saying the third in the series for Johnny Weismuller. While this film uses a lof of stock footage from the two earlier films it still stands on its own as a strong and rather violent entry into the Tarzan series.Rita and Eric Parker, two of Jane's cousins hire a hunter to find Jane so they can convince her to leave the jungle and return home.Captain Fry, the Hunter, has other motivations...he wants to capture Tarzan and take him back to the states to put him on dispay as an attraction, like an animal.Tarzan is eventually capture but escapes in time to rescue the others who have been taken captive.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mean and lean entry in the Tarzan series
The Tarzanmovies in the Weismuller series are like the Burroughs novels upon which they are based--the early works are impressive ,and as the series developed an air of routine set in .This follows on from the second of the Weismuller movies Tarzan and His Mate ,and while still enjoyable and tautly directed it is a lesser work than its predecessor .In fairness it should be noted that the work as we have it is not the movie as originally shot-preview audiences were reputedly upset by the violence ,reportedly quite graphic for its day ,and the movie was extensively re-shot .Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Scandals" Holds Up Well
I'd heard and read about this film since I was a kid in the 60's but never got the chance to see it until recently. I suggest you do the same! It's kinda like "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court", "Brigadoon" and "Wizard Of Oz" wrapped into one.5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Film!
Arguably Cantor's best film (with "Whoopee" and "Kid Millions" a close second and third), blessed with a great central premise (a la "A Connecticut Yankee"), terrific performances (watch for Lucille Ball as one of the Goldwyn Girls in "Keep Young and Beautiful"), and a great score (the aforementioned number, as well as "Put a Tax on Love" and "Build a Little Home").A truly captivating time capsule of the musical diversions made to offset the Great Depression, and a compelling reminder of why Cantor was reckoned one of the bright lights of his day!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best musicals of the 1930's
Yes, I'm under 30, and I love this movie. This is Depression-era musical entertainment at its finest: it's got Eddie Cantor, Ruth Etting, Busby Berkeley directed dance numbers, a chariot race, big sumptuous art deco sets, and truckloads of scantily dressed chorus girls!Although it has its corny moments, it's hardly ever sappy and never slow: a lot of the jokes are still funny, even after 70 years, and the songs are really incredibly catchy, especially "Build a Little Home" and "Keep Young and Beautiful."The plot is whimsical fantasy at its most charming: it's something of a cross between "The Wizard of Oz" and "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." By '30's standards, "Scandals" was risque, and by today's standards, it's not particularly politically correct. But who cares? It's loads of fun!(Interestingly enough, I once heard "Keep Young and Beautiful" on an episode of "Daria."An instrumental version was playing over the credits.I never would have thought I would have heard a song by Warren & Dubin on MTV...) ... Trivia...
5-0 out of 5 stars Good clean comedy
A seasoned Coast Guard Lt. Jordan (Joey Forman)is transferring out of one of the craziest, most crowded recreational harbors in the US coastlines, Newport Beach Harbor, California. Robert Morse stars his bumbling new replacement, Coast Guard Ensign Thomas Garland. This wacky movie is about the trials and tribulations faced by those rescuers at sea that must save the amateur weekend boaters (beatniks) from themselves. The great Don Ameche stars as the tough area Commander who served with Garland's father, a famous Admiral, so he has high expectations of Garland Jr. On the other hand Garland feels that he is jinxed to live in his father's shadow, contributing to his bad luck. Kate (Stefanie Powers) runs a local boat rental and sailing school. After rescuing him from his own wreck, she gets romantically involved with the Ensign as they must join forces to catch some jewel thieves. Phil Silvers, Mickey Shaugnessy, and Norman Fellstar as the 3 bumbling jewel thieves on the run from the police. This movie is simply loaded with visual sight gags and slapstick comedy. During the opening credits alone there are 4 funny mishaps and rescues. Bob Haskins as Chief Walsh. Chiyoko Kuni as the Japanese geisha, Joe Flynn, Wally Cox, Tom Lowell, Vito Scotti, Sammy Jackson, Joe Ross, Judy Jordan, Al Lewis. Kelly Thordson is the police officer on a motorcycle, a role he played in 5 Disney films. Many of the actors appeared in other Disney comedies of the period.

Two episodes from this re-make of the original series.A few good moments fail to justify them, however. In the first episode a T-Rex eats a mother dinosaur, but one of her ridiculously-big eggs (the biggest dinosaur eggswere the size of a pumpkin) survives and hatches into the only horrificthing in this series - a man in a twee suit resembling that contemptableSon of Godzilla. In the second episode the stranded family find acavewoman who knows about modern society for no explained reason. She issimilar to the cavewomen in countless tacky dinosaur films, tediouslyenough. There's also a monkey-boy called Stink, unamusinglyenough.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE CANTOR COMEDY.
Long considered the weakest of Cantor's six thirties films for Samuel Goldwyn, it was also the their final team effort. Mediocre though it may be, it still has enough going for it to merit the attention of fans of either Cantor or Ethel Merman. In this big-budgeted 1936 outing, the spineless Eddie Pink (!) is continuously bothered by bullies whiles he runs a handy man shop at Millwood University. A lonely milquetoast, his only protector is the kindly but dense Butch Carson (Gordon Jones). Eddie subscribes via mail order, a character-building course which promises to turn him from a mouse to a man by giving him a forceful personality. Eddie later gets involved with crooks, an amusement park & a vivacious torch singer named Joyce Lennox (Ethel Merman, in fine form)...Based upon a novel by Clarence Buddington Kelland which first appeared in the SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1935, the working titles for this fair comedy were DREAMLAND & SHOOT THE CHUTES. Amazingly, this film cost between 1.5 & 2 million dollars to produce. Goldwyn rented "The Cyclone Racer", a roller coaster in Long Beach, Ca. for use in the chase sequences. The role of Copple was originally to have been played by character actor Sam Hardy. After he died following and emergency operation, William Frawley was borrowed from Paramount. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable fable for adults, beautifully made
How did this terrific movie slip under the radar?
3-0 out of 5 stars The Legend of 1900
Fresh off popping a boring movie out of the player, I popped in this one. The premise is that a boy was born on a ship in 1900 and never set foot on land, truly a man without a country. The recreations of those olden days were simply a pleasure to behold. As in, the sets and the clothes. Tim Roth is talented, watchable and likeable. A brief appearance by Clarence Williams III is definitely a highlight of this film. Many years after THE MOD SQUAD, it's nice to see him having a bit of a career renaissance with a different generation of viewers.

A very strange story. It was an excellent movie. The music was simply great.I will be purchasing the sound track for sure. The ending(while a surprise)was rather sad.All-in-all,just a great movie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Cast
I like Esther Williams movies especially when she is paired with someone handsome, so this was a good combination with Peter Lawford and Ricardo Montalban both; I wish she would have done more films with one of them. I like the Latin dance numbers with Ricardo Montalban and Cyd Charisse, and the storyline is romantic, though the ending is a little abrupt (which isn't surprising with MGM musicals!).
4-0 out of 5 stars Great fun
I am now an Esther Williams fan, thanks to this film. I found her to be quite a funny actress. HEE-HEE!!! I was slightly annoyed to find that Jimmy Durante was in this, though, (i can't stand him), but I managed to get along.4-0 out of 5 stars Technicolor Fruit Salad

Editorial Review

Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Faithful Version of the Sewell Classic
This is a beautifully photographed and well-acted version of the Anna Sewell book that was published as a plea for better treatment of horses in the 1800s, and is unique in that, unlike most other film versions, especially the 1970s film with Mark Lester, that it stays fairly close to Sewell's original story. I am marking one star off for the really corny convention of having Black Beauty "in love" with Ginger...good grief, the horse was a gelding, not a stallion. Ginger was his stablemate, not his "lover" as they imply. Otherwise they got it all correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really quite stunning
I rented this thinking that my son might enjoy it, and that I might possibly be able to stand to sit through most of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This version of Black Beauty, is the best. The narration works very well. There will not be a dry eye in the house, I can tell you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
If this film footage had the same music as the original album, it would be worth $100, but it doesn't even come close. I bought the album, on its first release when it came out. The Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton collaboration is worth more then the rest of the whole show, if it were the same as on the LP. But it's not, I know, somewhere out there, someone has this footage on film. If they had any respect for great filmed music, they would re-release it, the entire show and give the proceeds to Amnesty International. It would definitely make a bundle, including some from me. And, by the way, the copies of this VHS I have are the MGM/UA originals and they only have 1 out of the 3 songs that Beck and Clapton played together.

1-0 out of 5 stars Something Completely Different from the Original
This edited version of the original (out-of-print) Secret Policeman's Other Ball is disappointing. Some of the choicest bits (including Pete Townshend's incredible acoustic of "Pinball Wizard") have been omitted. 2-0 out of 5 stars Comedy and music all in a good cause.
The first, unaccountably legendary 'Secret Policeman's Ball' was in effect a showcase for the comic Old Guard - Monty Python, Peter Cook, Billy Connolly etc. - with only Rowan Atkinson's participation hinting at the new directions British comedy would take. This sequel is much more representative of the early 1980s, adding to the cast the likes of Victoria Wood, Jasper Carrott, Dame Edna Everage and the 'Not the Nine O'Clock News' team. The refusal of these performers to taint the dignity of a charity fundraiser (for Amnesty International) with humour or imagination results in another hour and a half of stale and tedious routines (Atkinson actually reprises the classical music mime from the first film). What's worse, the 'comedy' is far more frequently interrupted by an aging gaggle of musical hypocrites, most notably Phil Collins, a famous fundraiser for the ruling Tory Party, who, at the time of this concert, supported apartheid in South Africa, suppressed allegations of domestic police brutality and racism, and prevented enquiries into notorious miscarriages of justice (the Guildford Four, the Birmingham Six). The one truly funny moment, however, comes from a musical sequence, when Donovan appears and a heckler shrieks 'I thought you were dead!'Once again, the film is impenetrably lit, but I don't think we're missing anything. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't have the greatest of plots, but still fun to watch!
Volume 5 has episodes "The Off-Broadway Affair" and "The Take Me To Your Leader Affair", both which appeared on Man from UNCLE's third season. The Man from UNCLE series is one of my favorite TV series ever to watch! But I must confess, these episodes do not have great plot (thus the 3 stars) but still I love the episodes! Lots of funny parts! The main characters are Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn, "Bullit" and "The Magnificent Seven") and favorite the enigmatic and quiet Russian, Illya Kuryakin played to perfection by actor David McCallum (another great movie with him is "The Great Escape"). 1-0 out of 5 stars Horrific stuff!
Both episodes were horrible, pure examples why the show went down the drain. Forget the guest stars. They don't save theepisodes' silly quality. Save your cash.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Off-Broadway and Take Me To Your Leader Affairs
In "The Off-Broadway Affair", UNCLE's arch-enemy, THRUSH, has found a way to infiltrate their top secret computer files and wreak havoc with the information they have discovered. Can a musical performance by Illya and help from an aspiring actress (Shari Lewis) save the day or is UNCLE doomed?Read more
