5-0 out of 5 stars Vincent and Catherine
I have read alot of the comments on this site - and yes i hold my hand up.What a beautiful series this is and was.I remember it back in the 80s.My dad was alive when it was running and he is no longer here.I was so touched by this programme and the music really touched my heart.Like many of you have said if you didnt get this programme well you really havent loved or felt true love. This programme really touched yr heart no matter how many times you watched it. The world was a nicer place when you could escape from the reality of the real world and imagine you were in the story lines yourself.I realised what having a heart really meant and how i think it made me a better person

5-0 out of 5 stars All Good Things---[but this is not the end!]
All good things come to an end, usually through stupidity! I think that "Catherine" going off to make Terminator might have had something to do with it. Anyway, Missy-Missy in New York, this is one of my favorite shows ever, also. Yes there are more episodes, and I have them on tape. I also want them on DVD! I know you wrote nine months ago, but I just read your review. Hope all is well with your daughter, and, yes, this is one great movie, and series. But, like I said, those who think they know it all brought another good program to an abrupt end. Buy this one everyone, but this is not the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please bring the TV show "Beauty & the Beast" to DVD
I too, don't understand why this series has never been released on DVD and was devastated when it was cancelled. This is the only TV show that I would ever even consider buying the tapes on, but that would be stupid, because they need to be on DVD.I am writing this to add my name to the list of customers begging for it to be offered on DVD, (if this would even help) and would ask to be notified when this happens.I am aware that this is probably not the most widely accepted show, but it is offered on VHS, so why not DVD...PLEASE? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A modern day saga of epic proportions
This is an ageless movie that gets better with every viewing. There are so many computer and gamer geeks in the world that I wonder why more movies are not made like this. Sure Mr. Geek can own the universe after he defeats the next Doom game, but how would he fair if the events were real? That is what this movie answers.
3-0 out of 5 stars don't buy it- but if it comes on t.v..........
This is the type of movie few people will like enough to own.For its time (1985), it has great special effects, and the plot at the very least is inventive.A computer geek goes through a 'vortex', and has to save his girlfriend from the enemy. The enemy makes him go through about six different situations, and the nerd has to think his way out of it (with the help of his computer, of course).5-0 out of 5 stars BLACKIE LAWLESS!!
The guy on the cover looks a lot like the lead singer from the worlds greatest metal band, W.A.S.P.That's because it's him!!That's right, Blackie Lawless and the rest of W.A.S.P. make a cameo appearance asSatan's rock band.Sort of the official "house band" of Hades!!Cool Stuff / Corny Movie!! GREAT!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But a Little Disappointing/ PG
I enjoyed this movie but it was a little disappointing, and was not at all what I expected. It was a very suspenseful, interesting and gripping story. It is not your typical Christmas movie though, and although it gives you a warm feeling at the end, it is quite depressing in parts.I thought Kurt Russell did an excellent job in his role as Johnny (He is so adorable). He was the hero in the story, so his fans will really enjoy this one.I found Melissa Gilbert to be a bit flat in her performance and it was hard to get used to her being a bratty child (throwing a rock through a store window, etc).It is natural to expect Laura I suppose, as it was filmed in the 70's when Little House on the Prairie was in its heyday.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Outstanding Hallmark movie
Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, and John Denver are great in this wonderful story of a elderly woman who loves where she is living. Even though a harsher environment than the city, she would rather die with what she is familiar than in strange new place. John Denver turns in a great performance as their son. If you enjoy Hallmark movies you will love this one. Most Hallmark movies are pretty good, but Tandy and Cronyn made this and "To Dance with the White Dog", and they are excellent. Many people bought the VHS, or enjoyed them on TV. Now you can get it on DVD.

These 3 actors together, all I can say is fantastic. Great heartwarming movie...

5-0 out of 5 stars "Fox Fire"

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique view of America
What really works about this film is that it truly is "the new land"; 19th century American seen thru fresh eyes. The film is Swedish so has no need to sugar coat things.Along with the beauty of the country and opportunity available to newcomers we also see African slaves in chains, Native Amercians making a last ditch effort to hold on to their land, and native born Amercians only too happy to cheat the newcomers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
If any of your ancestors came from any part of Europe by sea, you have to see this.Movie is not new, but is a classic. Was recommended to me by my Norwegian cousins even tho it's about Swedes. You DO NOT notice the dubbed English, believe me.And you want to watch if again and again because movie really captures what the emmigrants went through, both in the old country and here. Definitely a "to own" movie for anyone that likes history and genealogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical and entertaining
This is one great movie.I would recommend it to anyone interested in American or Swedish/scandinavian history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, everything you need in a great film.
I am welsh, and I am studying welsh in my local college. We have studied this film and it is by far one of the best films Ive seen that includes english films as well. The whole film is basically a flash back of Hedd Wyn's life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cymru am byth! Indeed!
I am a student of Celtic Studies at Harvard University who has just started to learn Welsh, and has already fallen in love with the soft and graceful beauty of this language. Today we have seen the first hour of this wonderful film in class, and will see the remainder of it next week. The beauty of the Welsh poetic spirit was so evident in the first few minutes of the film, that my eyes were constantly on the verge of tears. The pleasure of hearing Welsh spoken by native Welsh speakers motivates me more than I can say to strive to be the best student I can be, and to become as fluent as is humanly possible for someone born so far outside of the actual culture. I have already ordered a copy of the film in VHS for myself, and intend to watch it until it wears out, or I understand every Welsh word spoken--whichever occurs first. Until then, please consider releasing it on DVD!!

Editorial Review

Actor Stanley Tucci cowrote, codirected, and stars (along with Tony Shaloub) in this touching and funny parable about two brothers, Italian immigrants, who run an unsuccessful restaurant on the Jersey shore in the 1950s. Convinced by a thriving rival (Ian Holm) that jazz great Louis Prima will be stopping by their eatery for a late dinner after a show, the brothers pull out all stops and spend their last dollar organizing a banquet that ought to make culinary history. Expect to be very hungry after watching this delightful and touching film, but don't rush off to the kitchen until the full design of the characters and their relationships with lovers, suppliers, customers, and one another completes itself. With a memorable performance by Ian Holm and a quirky cameo by Tucci's codirector, Campbell Scott. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SMALL MOVIE
This movie is about a lot of things: uncompromising perfection, the differing notions of success, brotherly rivalry, the American Dream, love (oh yeah, there's lots of shades here) and, of course, food.I don't think a lot of reviewers have overpraised this film.My test of a great movie is while I'm watching it I think of people I know who I'd like to see it with and then I try to make it happen ("C'mon over, I've seen a movie I want you to see with me!).Lots of priceless scenes, both comic and touching.I won't spoil it for anyone but the last scene is a long take that wraps it up perfectly. If you're looking for AMERICAN PIE this ain't it but if you are patient you will be rewarded.A keeper.
3-0 out of 5 stars risotto, love & sibling rivalries
Well, BIG NIGHT is not exactly the kind of movie that I usually watch, but while I would not consider it outstanding, this melodrama kept me captivated and entertained.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable...
Good films are unforgettable... and here's one. On the surface it's a quirky little story about two Italian brothers running a restaurant in New Jersey in the 1950's. One is ridiculously passionate about cooking superb food while the other tries to make his brother's passion commercially viable despite the fact that customers don't want what he cooks. Both are up against their more successful Italian neighbour who gives the customers exactly what they want. Not much then... but it's what goes on beneath this deceptively simple tale that makes it so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monroe on Steroids
Frank Tashlin and Jayne Mansfield-- a marriage made in cartoon heaven. Who better to point up the absurdities of pop culture,1950's style, than Mansfield, with her little girl squeal, breathy delivery, and protruding gunboats. She resembles nothing so much as Marilyn Monroe on steroids. And Tashlin, with his gift for social satire and cartoonist eye for exaggeration. Notice how cleverly sight gags are inserted to stress a point-- an overheated kiss that pops popcorn, a computer read-out that mimics the dialogue, celebrity-mad teen-agers that pour out of a man-hole. Notice too, how in the end, Tashlin confronts the glamorous but artificial world of advertising with the unglamorous but authentic world of living things. In a subtle way, Tashlin's subtext undermines the image-obsessed 50's by anticipating the back-to-nature 1960's.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Jayne Mansfield movie
Why do I call this film the best Jayne Mansfield movie?.Well,it is the largest-budget film she ever appeared in + The Film was HERS.The Studio had paid quite a bundle for that play, that basically put Ms. Mansfield on the map.Even 'The Girl Can't help it'(also a great movie),was padded (no pun intended Jaynie!) with rock'n roll numbers, because the Studio was scared that Jaynecould not carry the film alone(Were they ever wrong !).
5-0 out of 5 stars A great comedy from beginning to end!
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter is one great laugh after another, satarizing everything about American popular culture. Even the opening credits are hilarious. Every bit of it still rings true today. Editorial Review

Elvis Presley's third and best film is this musical romp released in 1957, just as the Big "E" was reaching the peak of his hip-swiveling pre-army success. Filmed in ultra-cool black and white, the movie stars Elvis as a good ol' boy who saves a woman from an assault but kills her attacker, so he's convicted of manslaughter and sent to jail. While doing time he takes up the guitar and becomes a singing sensation, ready for the big time when he's finally released. He becomes a big star but his inflated ego gets him into trouble with his former cellmate and his new girlfriend. Short on plot but heavy on rock & roll, this EP classic features such hit songs as "Treat Me Nice," "Baby, I Don't Care," "Don't Leave Me Now," and, of course, the classic title song, performed in an elaborate jailhouse number that Elvis choreographed himself. This is Elvis in all his big-screen glory, and the movie's upbeat ending made it a huge success during its original release. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis Presley's Best Movie
This is Presley's third and best film which was released in 1957 just as he was reaching his peak. It is in ultra-cool black & white which just seems to add to its value. It has great dramatic appeal and is best remembered for its great songs, and for scenes that typify the Presley personality. One song is the incredible Jailhouse Rock musical sequence, with all of the blistering excitement and energetic dancing by the man who did it best.

3-0 out of 5 stars From Man Slaughter inmate to Rock n Roll Superstar
I'd Sure be delighted With your Company, Come on and WATCH Jailhouse Rock with me, lets WATCH, Everybody lets WATCH.The King of Rock n Roll in the 1957 classic musical Jailhouse Rock, from Metro Goldwyn Mayer is the story of Vincent Everett, a young man who is sent to the penatentiary for man slaughter, where is musical vocal talent is discovered and his cellmate shows him how to play guitar. He soon leaves jail behind and embarks to become a rock star, with some rejections and struggles along the way he eventually gets records sold and fans adoring him and even a tv appearance in the films most famous scene, The Jailhouse Rock sequence. This film is a rockin and rollin blast,a slamin jamin treat,Elvis rules the silver screen as awsome as the music industry,he always has and will have the throne to Rock n Roll King.If Your a fan of Elvis, musicals or classic films, I recommend this one,let Elvis Presley rock and roll you with this classic gem "Take My Advice, Treat Me Nice" "Your So Young and Beautiful to Me" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Like the Big Red Dog, No?
I saw this film when it was first released and watched it every time it was rebroadcast on the Disney television show. Even at the age of seven I was engrossed in the narrative of the orphan boy who wins the heart of an Irish setter. I found the actors comfortable with their roles and very watchable. I suppose in this era where everything has to flash and spin that this slower-paced movie may be considered "boring," but I still love it--I will take genuine emotion over flash and spin any day. My only complaint is that only this Anchor Bay version has the film in its proper perspective; the Disney version is pan and scan. When is the present Disney organization going to take some notice of REAL Walt Disney films again?

4-0 out of 5 stars BIG RED
I recently saw this film when I found it in 1 of my friend's house where they had several movies packed up & I liked the movie.I was glad to see an Irish Setter as the main animal in the film because we are so used to seeing Golden Retrievers,Yellow Labrador Retrievers, mixed breeds & Beagles.I loved how it was set in the province of Canada.I also think the scenery is beautiful.I loved the film buy it because it's not a dissapointing film!
4-0 out of 5 stars FAMILY FUN
BIG RED is a film your family should enjoy viewing together. The dogs are beautiful and "act" quite well; Gilles Payant, in spite of the hard to decipher French accent, brings an innocent joy and commitment to his role; Janette Bertrand as Theresa, the housekeeper, is fitfully feisty and endearing; and Walter Pidgeon is good in his transformation from heartless showman to caring father figure.Unfortunately, the characterizations are merely anecdotes to the lush scenery and shenanigans of boy and dog, and result in a tedious, sometimes dull narrative. However, it's heartwarming and enjoyable.Certainly not one of Disney's best but a refreshing tale in this day of special effects and low moral films. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ladd and Lake in a sizzling crime thriller!
This Gun for Hire struck a deep chord with the movie viewing audiences of 1942 since this was the movie that made Ladd a big star. This is the first pairing of Lake and Ladd in a film--a combination the studios were to repeat often.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Ugly people, blackmailers...only one way to deal with them."
While Alan Ladd (The Blue Dahlia, Shane) certainly had plenty of time in front of the camera in bits parts early in his career, it wasn't until he appeared in the feature This Gun for Hire (1942), his first of seven films he'd make with costar Veronica Lake (Sullivan's Travels, The Blue Dahlia), that he became a star.Based on a novel by Graham Greene (The Third Man), adapted to the screen by Albert Maltz (Destination Tokyo) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar, High Sierra), and directed by Frank Tuttle (Gunman in the Streets), the film stars, as I've mentioned, Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. Also appearing is Robert Preston (The Music Man, Victor/Victoria), Laird Cregar (The Black Swan, The Lodger), Tully Marshall (The Covered Wagon), Roger Imhof (Drums Along the Mohawk), Marc Lawrence (Key Largo), and Yvonne De Carlo (The Ten Commandments, "The Munsters"), in a bit part early in her career.
4-0 out of 5 stars "I Don't Remember Breaking Any Commandments."
Grahame Greene's novel "A Gun For Sale" is brought to excellent life in this 1942 early film noir. This was Alan Ladd's breakthrough performance, and although he is billed under the title with introducing credits, he had made many films prior to this, often in small, unrewarding roles, sometimes uncredited. His Philip Raven is cold-blooded, ruthless, but vulnerable, his abusive past always foremost in his mind, although he shows a soft spot for cats, children, and Veronica Lake. In their first pairing, Ladd and Lake show the electric intensity that made them a great screen pair of the 1940s. Both were petite, blond, with cool acting styles that belied their sometimes sensitive natures, no matter what kind of a tough front they presented. Lake's character, Ellen Grahame, is a nightclub performer (her vocals were dubbed by Martha Mears), who finds herself drawn into spying on her rather suspicious boss. Laird Cregar is the almost sympathetic villain, Gates, who burned Raven and in doing so, has signed his own death warrant. Robert Preston portrays Ellen's fianc?e, Lt. Michael Craven, who is determined to capture Raven. When Ellen unwittingly finds herself alongside Phillip on a train, she ends up in on his "job" and, later in the proceedings, as his 'hostage'. They soon form a rather tentative bond as Raven relates his horrendous childhood beatings at the hand of a nasty relative. She reaches out to him, and although he rejects her comfort (he thinks she's trying to make him "go soft"), he agrees to help her get Gates to reveal his dastardly plans for America involving bombs (this was during WW2, after all). There is an almost misty eyed longing in their faces, sensing that maybe, if in another time or another place, things might have been different. A touching moment when Raven rests his head on Lake's shoulder on the train, his telltale deformed wrist exposed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Tati ' s pearl!
As you know, Monsieur Hulot is one of the designers of the Automobile Factory ALTRA,that intends to present its new model in the announced fair. All the film I around Hulot ' s voyage accompanied of a truck driver and a lovable young female Executive. But as you can guess this voyage will be seriously troubled funnily talking.
4-0 out of 5 stars A joyous romp
Although not Tati's best film, it's my favorite. The amusing technology is obviously aged now, it nevertheless is still a joyous centerpiece to this misadventurous trip from factory to car show. If you like Tati (an acquired taste for many), you'll be enchanted by this hard to find film.

5-0 out of 5 stars They're all great!
I just hope this'll be out on DVD sometime soon. Some think this film is a bit too slow, or not as wonderful and inspired as the earlier films. That's kind of like saying Beethoven's 7th is not quite as good as his 5th or the Mona Lisa just doesn't have the same visual punch as the Last Supper. Jeepers, this is Tati we're talking about--a comedic genius who made uncompromising and meticulously crafted films, a guy who raised comedy to a height that no one since has dared or been able to match.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Wait...
I found that the series on DVD at www.empiricalfilm.tv in a 10 disc set! There are 3 seasons- 56 episodes for $99.99. I know this really seams like a lot BUT, when you think of the fact that this is 3 seasons ALL IN ONE , that comes to about $30 a season, which is about right. The quality is as good as watching TV and the artwork on the box is beautiful. If you really want to wait for the official release, go to Netflix and save the First Season in your list. As for me, the waiting is over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Review- 4 stars, but really a 2
I have mixed feelings about this movie.I really thought when I bought it it was just going to be that first episode which started the tv series.I loved that first episode. But what I found was that it was a compilation of several episodes. It flowed smoothly, but I am really not a Linda Hamilton fan.I had only watched the show for Vincent - certainly not for Katherine who I might have liked if the character was played by someone other than Linda.Linda Hamilton played the role too crybaby dramatic and she always got on my nerves even back when I was watching the series.I just wish there was more Vincent in the movie instead of it being mostly her.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important television series ever produced...
And this is the first episode! Beauty and the Beast, the romatic story of a beast who loves in the tunnels beneath New York City, is a beautiful combination of Sci-Fi, fantasy, action and romance. The pilot episode is heartfelt and tender. What a great program. This is a show that changed many lives, and still does. See for yourself--do a search on the web. There are more fans now than there were 15 years ago when the show was still on the air! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Read
I don't advocate thismuch, but when you compare the novel and this movie, I would say go read the book. This book leaves out and alters somuch of the story that it completely changes the meaning of the book.Omitting the Tom Sawyer sequence at the end is a complete crock. When Peter Jackson set out to make the Lord of the Rings, yes, he had to cut much out in order to not make 3 different four-hour long movies, but he didn't decide "Ok, let's change it from 'The Ring being destroyed' to 'Indians do a dance and then tell a story about how the White Man took his land'."Someone wrote that it shouldn't matter if it doesn't follow the book exactly. This is a case where it changed just about every possible aspect from the book just enough to be able to still call it Huck Finn.In fact, I could promise that just about the only two things from the book that were not altered in at least one blasphemous way were the title and the character's names.

5-0 out of 5 stars MICKEY ROONEY SHINES!
THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF THE GREAT STAR MICKEY ROONEY'S VERY BEST.WHO CARES IF IT'S NOT TOTALLY TRUE TO THE BOOK. THE FACT HERE IS THAT I WATCH IT TO SEE MICKEY ROONEY'S GREAT TALENT AND JUST TO SEE HIM.HE HAS SUCH A SCREEN PRESENCE, THERE IS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT HIM THAT MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT NO OTHER COULD BE ANY BETTER.THIS MOVIE IS GREAT!IF YOU ARE A MICKEY FAN AS I AM YOU WILL LOVE THIS MOVIE! 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
The carisma between Ms Hamilton and Mr Perlman throughout this entire series is heart warming and magical. I could only dream to have a friend/love interest like Vincent. The story Catherine relates at her father's funeral is memorable and life teaching. When Catherine goes below to grieve you can't help but want her and Vincent to take the relationship to the absolute next level. I felt like I would pay someone to look at me the way Vincent looks at Catherine. A look that is filled with so much love, no words are needed. Mr Perlman brought it "REAL" - an outstanding performance, and Ms Hamilton portrayed so many of us females out here who may have material things but realizes that love is all that matters. So I'm a romantic!! I own the entire first season of this series and the only two that were released from the second season. I have tenaciously tried for well over three years to obtain information as to how to purchase therest of the second season, but no one has replied to my e-mails or letters. The last info I learned was that Lion Gate Films are the only ones who can release the second season on VHS/DVD. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. But if there is anyone out there that feels me, PLEASE!! inform me as to how to retrieve the second season of this series. I even paid google and they couldn't help me. Who can I badger for these episodes?

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring it Back!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST OF ALL ELVIS FILMS!
This movie has it all -- Michelle Carey, Elvis, changing times, psychedelic sequences (check out the "Edge of Reality" bit -- the girls "morph" *years* before the technology was invented!), taboo subjects (sex, etc.), and the original version of "A Little Less Conversation." It is a true romantic comedy; had it never been made with Elvis, and had been shot this year with Ben Afleck and Cameraon Diaz, it would be a smash hit! Actually, it was a pretty big hit in its own time, even though it was one of Elvis's last three or four movies. This film needs to be released on DVD soon! Especially wonderful is the widescreen version that airs on TNT every now and then. Michelle Carey was incredible -- I wish she was still around. The songs are great (all 4 of them), and this movie, written by the same dude that wrote "Private Lessons" (1981), rises above the rest of the awful schlock that Elvis concerned himself with for the majority of the sixties. Relax, check it out, and have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Presley's BEST!
This film is very in tune with the 1960's and even has an acid-influenced Elvis-dream sequence!Elvis is very relaxed in the role and seems to actually enjoy it.He gets to be a cool photographer with a cool dune buggy and a great big dog for a pet. This is fast-paced, not slow, like some other reviewers have said...Elvis fans will be surprisingly pleased by this very-late-stage film.I think he made only 1 or 2 others after this one.I bought it for the psychedelic acid-dream sequence and ended up really enjoying the whole movie and I'm wasn't even a hardcore Elvis fan.(But now I am!)

5-0 out of 5 stars PleasePut On DVD!!!!!!!!
Please put this wonderful Elvis classic on DVD so that humble people such as myself can afford it.Spread the word,Thanks!!!!!!!! ... Read more

Kermit the Frog as Santa Claus narrates this delightful holiday tale.Rugbythe Tiger is Jaime's favorite Christmas toy from last year.Rugby is convincedthat he will be wrapped up and placed under the tree again this year. When it's Christmas Eve and all the other toys try to explain to him that that is not going to happen, Rugby decides to take matters into his own paws and placehimself under the tree.He makes the dangerous trip from the playroom to theliving room trying not to be seen, for if a toy's secret of being ableto move when humans aren't around is discovered, it becomes frozen forever. Now all his friends from the toy room must get him back before it's too late. This sweet story about friendship and loyalty is delightful.
