5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, the battle scene!
This is one instance where both the original film in the thirties and the modern one are excellent - especially, in both the battle scene. It is easy to critique these movies for historical inaccuracies, but the gist is right on the money. This was a major and a meaningful victory for the United States and January 8th was a national holiday until the time of the Civil War. This last victory confirmed the US as a truly independent nation -our "Second War of Independence" - whereas beforehand the Europeans had ignored international law in dealings with us. See Robin Reilly's The British at the Gates - although the battle was fought after the signing of the peace treaty, the treaty was deliberated worded so the Brits could keep N.O. for a naval station, if they had won. They hesitated after landing because of an audacious (i.e., courageous) assault by the citizens of the city; their artillery, before the main attack, was blown to pieces by American guns; and their own assault - by Wellington's Heroes - was stopped cold by a collection of militiamen, Indians, civilians - and pirates. (Aside: one British author on the subject was miffed because an American had described Pakenham's wife, on board ship, being horrified on seeing his body returned in a barrel of rum - "Pakenham was not married!"Yes.... but it was his mistress who was horrified!) Watch the movie and be proud again to be an American!

About 1959, I would have been 8 years old, my great aunt Louise saw "The Buccaneer" and had a stroke. She had a stroke each time she saw it.She saw it 5 more times and died.
4-0 out of 5 stars Big, Lavish Hollywood Epic
I used to love these types of big, bold, colorful costume epics as a kid and I still like them today. It's been a number of years since I've seen The Buccaneer but it was always one of my favorites.Directed by Anthony Quinn the film stars Charlton Heston as General Andrew Jackson and Yul Brynner as pirate Jean LaFitte and is sent against the backdrop of the war of 1812.Lafitte and his pirates control a local and strategically placed Island near New Orleans. While he refrains from attacking American vessels he's still not in the good graces of Jackson.Jackson is faced with a dire dilemma...the British are massing a large force and planning to attack New Orleans and the American forces are vastly outnumbered. They turn to ally with LaFitte.Lafitte's men want them to side with England as they think they will certainly win, but LaFitte gets assurances from Jackson that his men will be pardoned if they aid the Americans. This deal is complicated when one of the Pirates under LaFittes command attacks an American ship and kills everyone except a boy who escapes.Even though LaFitte new nothing about the attack he accepts responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars An urban witch
Set in New York City, starting on Christmas Eve, this 1958 film has James Stewart playing Shep Henderson, a publisher who has just recently moved into an apartment, and now meets his neighbors.Downstairs there is a shop maintained by Gillian Holroyd (played by Kim Novak), a woman with particular powers to get what she wants, and who has a cat named Pyewacket (Pi for short).Upstairs is Gillian's aunt Queenie (played by Elsa Lanchester) who also has a little power of her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars why no dvd?
This a classic comedy. It should be released on DVD. Who wants to buy VHS anymore?

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the year, this is satire in fine form.
Yes, it's true that the movie took the title of Helen Gurley Brown's book 'Sex and the Single Girl,' generally tossed it aside, and wrote something that had nothing to do with the book's true content.Yes, sexism abounds.Yes, the acting is hammy. But what one needs to realize is that this movie is a very fine satire that was rather ahead of its time for all those reasons. To see the year it was made, one might jump to conclusions and think this movie is serious. But it's funny, it's damn funny, and it knows what it's doing. This movie took the usual romantic comedy farce formula of the time and gave it a healthy beating. If you watch the 2003 movie 'Down With Love' with Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, a parody on '60's romances, you'll notice the same plot line - pretty girl writes book attacking traditional gender roles, sucessful journalist playboy hatches scheme to make pretty girl fall in love to write a story exposing her, playboy falls in love with girl and doesn't want to do the story. When 'Down With Love' came out, it was recognized as a funny parody. The only reason 'Sex and the Single Girl' isn't recognized as satire is because it made fun of its very own time.Give this one a chance and you'll be in for a clever treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hotel - Where women are "ladies" and men are "gentlemen"
I love this movie! It's a wonderful escape back to an era when hospitality was in and everyone not only knew how, but were expected to "dress" (it makes me want to buy white gloves and hats just to do lunch). 5-0 out of 5 stars Hotel...Two Hours of Distilled Style
I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the score to this movie described as "dreadful"! I turned on this movie shortly after it started, and probably would have turned it off if the wonderful scorehadn't grabbed my attention. The music and the Technicolor beauty drew mein, and the complexly woven plot kept me watching intently, rather thanjust listening to the music! And the end was great; I thought it wastriumphant; very uplifting! If you want to watch two hours of distilledstyle, a portrait of a bygone era when men still wore suits and hats, whenstyle and luxury hadn't lost out to cheap plastic imitations, get thismovie!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hotel - A reminder of movies made in more genteel times.
I seen this movie at least two times and found it very entertaining. Great subplots and characters. I felt the movie had a major undertone to it regarding personal service and hospitality versus non personal, efficiency, corporate driven profits which defines the hospitality businessas it today.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Treat for Nightmare Fans
I got this for Christmas from my friend and had to watch it that very night. You can definitely tell that it is from the 80's.Ok, the story doesn't quite follow the movies, but how many different conflicting things have the fans seen by now?I really enjoyed this telling of the story to show how Fred became the dream killer we all grew to love in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies.I will say that the acting definitely is not award winning, although I think Robert Englund(Freddy Krueger) does a great job as usual. The story is good enough if you are a fan you will most likely really get a kick out of it.Now let's keep our fingers crossed that Robert Englund can get the Freddy Prequel movie up and rolling in another year or two.3-0 out of 5 stars The old "Freddy's Nightmares" series pilot

Get past the tenth rate acting and cheap production values and you have a not too bad (not even decent either) entry to the all too cheesy, piece of crap TV series. The first half of this episode truly sucks as it spoofs"The Exorcist", but the second half isn't bad.The second halfdeals with Freddy's graduating class coming back to Springwood for theirhigh school reunion and just finding out that the kid that wore that dirtyred and green sweater all the timeis not only dead, but a vicious childmolester and murderer. One of his peers, a Hollywood horror filmscreenwriter, decides to exploit Freddy's story for the screen (it wouldmake an excellent movie right?).For the Nightmare completist.Anyonelooking for quality, look away.

5-0 out of 5 stars it takes me back
I saw this movie when I was a teenager and going to the movies was a big thing for me then-----what I remember best about it was the terrific dancing----and, of course, who could ever get tired of looking at Janet Leigh---seeing it again enables one to look at it more closely and realize how really enjoyable it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ruth, Eileen and their 'wonderful town'...
MY SISTER EILEEN was Columbia's answer when they could not secure the film rights to WONDERFUL TOWN, the hugely-successful Broadway musical version of Ruth McKenney's "Eileen Stories".Columbia had previously filmed MY SISTER EILEEN to acclaim in 1942 with Rosalind Russell as Ruth and Janet Blair as Eileen.Roz later wowed Broadway when she made her musical Ruth debut in WONDERFUL TOWN in 1953 (playing the role again for a TV version of the tuner in 1957).This musical version of MY SISTER EILEEN features a score that cannot even compare with that for WONDERFUL TOWN (despite the music by Jule Styne - `Mr Broadway Overture' himself).
5-0 out of 5 stars A charming, screwball musical
Most folks will pay attention to this film becuase it's an early piece by choreographer Bob Fosse -- but it is a fun bit of froth that easily stands on its own.An absolutely delightful musical comedy, starring Betty Garrett as a smart smalltown girl determined to make it in New York City. She moves there with her with her glamourous, ditzy sister Eileen, whose good looks open more doors than do Garrett's brains and moxie.A nice film about struggling to get ahead in the Big Apple, with a script that takes its time and several exuberently goofy dance numbers, gleefully choreographed by a young Bob Fosse, who also plays one of the sister's avid suitors. The penultimate dance scene is side-splittingly hilarious, featuring a swarm of recently disembarked Cuban sailors on the prowl for American women, who form an inexhaustable conga line that snakes chaotically through the gal's tiny apartment.Thoroughly entertaining... a great, lighthearted film with some fabulous acting and bright, winning performances by all involved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best sex comedy of the early 60s
Another masterpiece written by George Axelrod (Lord Love A Duck, 7 Year Itch, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?), this film is the penultimate sex comedy of its day. This was made when Hollywood actually made films about adults, before youth culture erased that demographic, never to return. The scenes of the war between the sexes have never been funnier, culminating in the great courtroom scene where a juror is goaded by Lemmon to push an imaginary button that would erase his wife, and the juror yelling at his wife, "Shut up, you old bat!," as he gleefully pushes it. The scenes of Lemmon's bachelor pad are priceless, if only that's how comic artists really lived! This is essential viewing, next ot A Guide to the Married Man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny movie!!!!
This is one of my favorite Jack Lemmon movies! It's a well done story with some great actors. If you like old movies you should try this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT An Instructional Video
This wicked little comedy could never be filmed today, and not merely because the dilemma that Stanley Ford (Jack Lemmon) finds himself in has been all but eliminated by "no fault" divorce laws.As Stanley's butler, Charles Burbank (Terry-Thomas), gleefully announces at the beginning, this is a movie for men only.Women will not appreciate it at all unless they have a good sense of humor; stereotypical feminists would be well advised not to bother.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freddy transcends from movies to TV
I never knew that Freddy Krueger had a TV series, until I found an episode in the store. As an avid Freddy fan (though Michael Myers is still my #1 fav!) I gave it a chance, and wow!Though not as intense as the movies(which is to be expected from 1980's TV), Robert Englund still manages todeliver his creepy, yet riotous, performance as Freddy Krueger. Many peoplesay he became less scary as the movies went on, but I say his twistedripoffs of one-liners makes him even better. James Bond pulls a similarstunt in all of his movies, so let's give Freddy a break and stopcomplaining about the movies. Robert Englund deserves a standing ovationfor playing the same character for almost 20 years! In this particularepisode, when a TV talk show host does an investigation into dreams thatkill, Freddy attempts to stop the show, or else he won't have anyone toplay with anymore! But the show goes forward, and Freddy puts the talk showhost in the hospital. There's a truly great Freddy moment when he performssurgery on his patient, ripping off even more great oneliners. This isFreddy at his best! Although not as good as the movies, the TV series isstill worth checking out, especially if you love Freddy! You are all hischildren now!

3-0 out of 5 stars Freddy Fever!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Touching Hong Kong Love Story
William Holden plays Robert Lomax, an American architect who takes a year off from work to pursue his dream of making it as an artist. He moves to Hong Kong and sets up house in a cheap hotel plagued with prostitutes. He uses one, Suzie Wong (played by Eurasian actress Nancy Kwong), as a model for his paintings and she soon falls in love with him.To complicate matters, the daughter of a prominent HK-based British banker also falls for Lomax, and he ultimately must decide between Wong, to whom he seems more attracted but whose occupational background he finds troubling, and the more socially prominent Englishwoman.

1-0 out of 5 stars Paris When It Fizzles
In 1964 when this movie came out in the theaters the reviews it got were not good.I was 14 at the time and remember my mother reading about it in the newspaper, and the headline for this movie was "Paris When It Fizzles."There was little chemistry between Hepburn and Holden. When I finally saw the movie. They were right.I simply like both actors, mainly because I liked them in "Sabrina" but, like the critics said; it fizzled.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paris When it Sizzles 1964
William Holden (1918-1981) portrays a screenwriter with a script deadline in three days . When he ask secretary Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) to help concord ideas , she acts out a potpouri of preposterous plots . Beutifully shot on location in paris by famed Cinematrographer Claude Renoir (1914-1993) and here is another chance to see old Paris from 1963 . Yes , the story and the plot are not the most suspense, but i give a 3 stars for this maybe not the best , but anyway a entertaining movie . High Quality transfer .

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Judy Holliday's best !
A delightful, genuinely heartwarming comedy, starring Judy Holliday and Richard Conte as a young couple about to have a child, yet still struggling to define what their family life will mean to them, and Salvatore Baccaloni as Conte's broadly portrayed Italian Papa.Fans of Judy Holliday will love this film -- she leaves her "dumb blonde" character aside in favor of a much richer role; she gets some great comedic moments in early on, acting out the clumsiness and moodiness of late-term pregnancy, yet also portrays a smart, intuitive young woman who provides the rational and emotional glue which holds her family together. There are a lot of subtle touches to this film; nothing is overplayed or hackneyed, and although it is set in the white-picket fence era of the early '50s, the issues addressed in the script will ring true for many viewers for decades to come.Recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars John Fante's sell out
Watching this movie was a tragedy for me. John Fante was a magnificent novelist of the 30's and 40's who wrote two of my favorite novels Ask the Dust and The Road to Los Angeles. He sold his talent to Hollywood in the 50's. In the 70's he had a short comeback with West of Rome and Brotherhood of the Grape, but the damage was done. 4-0 out of 5 stars JUDY, JUDY, JUDY...

    Editorial Review

The shaded face of a mysterious stranger fills the screen as a gunslinger enters the saloon deep in the background. A bright but plaintive trumpet moans out a melody to the accompaniment of a strumming guitar. The stranger drops his shot glass and fires, catching the drink before it hits the floor. Ah, the operatic excess of the spaghetti Western... But wait, is that Emilio Estevez hiding under that Spanish brim? Gene Quintano's made-for-cable homage to the mercenary Westerns of Sergio Leone and his ilk doesn't have the wide screen, the Spanish deserts, or the magnetic, squinting presence of Clint Eastwood (Estevez is a poor substitute by any standard), but his dusty plains and cinematic swagger make for a fun little genre picture. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Western!! Emilio Estevez rules!!
This is a great western starring Emilio Estevez that's reminiscent of the Clint Eastwood 60's Spaghetti Western flicks. It's a must see!!

3-0 out of 5 stars How could a movie that rips off Woo, Leone and Raimi be bad?
That's what I asked myself. It's got a Leone story (along with a 100% authentic imitation Morricone score), Woo action (the opening nightclub scene ripped COMPLETELY out of The Killer) and tries its best to have Raimi energy. But if you're going to be "inspired" or use an "homage", it should be to compliment a story and the story's characters; not build them.2-0 out of 5 stars Baby-faced gunman
I can't buy baby-faced Estevez as a cold-blooded killer (with hard eyes, as someone says). With guns waving around, he wipes out not one, but two, armies of bad guys and doesn't get a scratch. Har har. In this movie a wagon outruns horses, and a priest sits on a fortune in gold while his people are starving and tormented. Ay carumba! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're a if you want to wallow in the bad seek out OH DAD
I don't think I'll ever understand the 60's? What a wacky time! Somewhere between civil rights marches, Vietnam, moon landings, LSD, and the myriad of other things that came put of that time, also came some of the oddest movies ever. Major studio's seemed to be dumping large sums of money into strange films some that come to mind, Otto Preminger Skidoo, The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, and the film I'm about to review, OH DAD, POOR DAD, MAMMA'S HUNG YOU IN THE CLOSET AND I'M FEELING SO SAD.4-0 out of 5 stars What happened?
This is a very funny comedy although the version available on VHS (1984 Paramount) suffers from revisons that lighten the original "darker" tone of the movie version released in 1966. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Corpse delight!"
This hysterical black, black comedy was all too soon ignored by everyone. Do yourself a favor - Roz Russell? Remember "Auntie Mame"? Well, this gal has never been better as the acid tongued mother [mild acid, you know], together with her disfunctional family [includes Robert Morse, the brilliant Jonathan Winters, Barbara Harris - another "treasure"], on vacation somewhere in the Caribbean - just watch out for the 25 year old baby! It is alive with joy, and probably in some vague way will remind you of the TV series "Dinosaurs" ["gotta love the baby!"]. Make sense? Not really, it's just there for sheer enjoyment, and a long lost jewel just waiting to be rediscovered. This is a "Must have" for any avid collector. [Based on the play by Arthur L. Kopit]. Oh, and Dad? He is somewhere, embalmed, neatly ensconced in the coffin, in the closet! Well worth watching! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
i used to be a big fan of the tv series. and this episode isnt really your typical freddy slasher. its just like the dude from kosivo said take this episode for what it is. now keep in mind that the episodes took place in the late 80s real early 90s. tv shows wernt exactly how it is now. but over and all this is a pretty good episode even though i dont remember seeing this on tv a while ago. but if your a big nightmare fan such as myself and a big fan of late 80s and early 90s tv shows i recamend that you buy all the freddys nightmare episodes that are on sale right now

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, for a low-budget series.
Like 1960's Batman, this series is campy.Don't look for unpredictableplots, state-of-the-art effects, or a mildly good scare.Take the seriesfor what it is.A low-budget extension of the films.I didn't become aFreddy fan to be scared, I enjoyed his humor.Just take each episode witha grain of salt, willingly suspend your disbelief, and do your best toenjoy this series.Nearly every Freddy appearance is comedic and a treat. This episode is no exception.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Stiff
Of all the terrible episodes of this lousy TV series I've seen, this is the worst! There is no reason to see this cliched "scheming wife killing her husband to run away with another lover only to discover thather husband was buried with a winning lottery ticket" piece ofgarbage!Only for the "Nightmare On Elm Street" completists. This video features Mary Crosby of "Dallas" and David Lander of"Laverne and Shirley" as the couple. It was directed (?) withoutpassion, suspense or anything else film makers put into their work byWilliam Malone. It co-stars Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. If you wantan episode of Freddy's Nightmares check out any other one but this! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rockin Roll Crime Fighters
When I saw the pilot, I couldn't wait for the series to begin. This is crime fighting at its best. Every character was interesting and the writing was superb! My only regret is that I didn't have the VCR on"record" for the entire series. If anyone does or knows where Ican get complete copies of the series on tape, write me back athumbert@midusa.net

4-0 out of 5 stars A dark, rockin', guns 'n' chrome story.
From the chase up Lake Shore Drive in dueling '59 Ford squad cars, to the heat of Lt. Torello's stuffy office, this is one mesmerizing movie. The music, clothes, dialogue, action - everything comes together to present awacked-out look at the greasers in the Chicago Outfit in the early 1960'sand the good guys in black suits and thin ties who chased them. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit of a let down
This is a very funny spoof of not just Naked Gun and Lethal Weapon, but every other movie in the genre. There's so many, I've even noticed a few that I missed the first few times I watched it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Heh, there's no Loaded Weapon 2
I'm really tired of critics trashing this movie, going so far as to say it's National Lampoon's worst. Have you seen what NL has been releasing? A big fan of NL, I rented a few of their recent movies, and the closest I got to laughing was during Gold Diggers, which was only kind of funny, but the best of the latest NL movies.
