Editorial Review

He's shallow, he's self-involved--in short (and he is short, too), he's a perfect candidate to be a plastic surgeon. But, as played by Michael J. Fox, he's riding for a fall, and gets it when his car crashes in a tiny South Carolina town. The accident is his fault, so his punishment is doing community service which, in this town, means being the town doctor (because there isn't one). Even as he's chafing at the bit to get to the Beverly Hills practice where he'll be working, he's discovering that small-town life has its rewards. This is a movie that's never quite as funny as you wish, but it still manages to inspire a lot of good will, thanks to a varied cast of veteran actors that includes Barnard Hughes, David Ogden Stiers, and Frances Sternhagen, as well as an intriguing brace of young ones: Julie Warner, Bridget Fonda, and Woody Harrelson. George Hamilton is perfectly cast as Fox's prospective new boss. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For light comic romantic entertainment, it's a winner...
Michael J. Fox, David Ogden Stiers, Woody Harrelson and all the supporting cast members are wonderful in this small, quiet story of a stranded doctor in a seemingly stagnant southern town. It's not a masterpiece, not an award winner, not an enduring example of its genre, but it is fun, and it is sweet, and it offers a nice escape from the troubles of the day. For decent folks, it's a very decent 90-minutes of movie magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, immensely entertaining film
Too often, Hollywood directors seem to forget that cinematic success comes in the form of great characters.Doc Hollywood, though, is one of those films that proves the rule. This movie is chock full of great characters, even in some of the smallest of roles - and it's not just the people, for the small town in which the story takes place is quite a character unto itself. The town of Grady is sort of an updated version of Mayberry - idyllic, of course, but nonetheless charming and evocative. It's the kind of place you can only find in the South.

Editorial Review

This Broadway hit gets a solid film treatment by director Norman Jewison, but that can't make up for the weaknesses of the script (which were as true onstage as they are here). Jane Fonda plays a chain-smoking shrink sent to a convent to do a psychological evaluation of a novice (Meg Tilly) who gave birth to a baby and then killed it in her little room. Was it a virgin birth? A miracle? And what of the bloody stigmata that seem to spontaneously appear on her hands? Fonda also finds herself clashing with the Mother Superior (Anne Bancroft) over the line between faith and science. But writer John Pielmeier can't flesh this out beyond an idea; in the end, the solution is a disappointingly earthbound one that even the strong acting in this film can't elevate. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ONE WONDERS...
One wonders why there was a barrage of attacks against Mel Gibson's The Passion supposed "anti-Semitism," and not one peep about this open and vicious attack on Christianity by certain "Hollywood types."
2-0 out of 5 stars A failure in many respects
Jane Fonda, whom I respect highly as an actress, cannot save this dud.Neither the score nor the cinematography is memorable. Many scenes revolve around the fact that Dr. Livingstone is a smoker, which is a very flimsy hook upon which to hang a film. This film did not hold my interest--at several points I was consciously bored and had to exert will-power to finish watching it.Moreover, the views of psychiatric practice and hypnosis are wholly unrealistic. It seems this film could not decide what to be, and certainly lacked the courage to demythologize its subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surpisingly Good Film
I was not expecting this film to be as good as it was.Fonda is great as the chain smoker who is determined to get to the bottom of the secret of the dead baby.Meg Tilly is truly a great actress and it shows in this film.It brings memories of Name of the Rose with Connery and Slater which deals with Murder in a monestary in the 16th century. ... This 1967 film took home lots of Oscars for its fascinating drama about a Philadelphia detective (Sidney Poitier) who assists a redneck Southern sheriff (Rod Steiger) in solving a murder. A study in racism that ebbs a bit through the collective and shared need between a black man and a white man who don't want to be working together, the film continues to strike a chord today. Steiger is a mass of snarling danger, Poitier a bundle of nerves covered in class. Norman Jewison (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great fun due to the Poitier-Steiger pairing...
The racism in this film may be a bit dated now, even in the deep south, where blacks holding high positions in police work is no longer a novelty. The movie, however, still holds my attention when I find it on television, although I must have seen it 20 times since its first release. I like Steiger's work best, but Sidney is also at a high level here. The supporting cast is uniformly good as well. If you have never seen this, take a rental and enjoy yourself. The film's success eventually led to a multi-season TV series starring Carroll O'Connor, and that had some good moments, too, but never equalled the big screen version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage classic 60's film on racial tensions with superb acting.
In The Heat Of The Night (1967) Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier team up in study of racial politics in a sleepy Southern town. Steiger won an Oscar as the prejudiced lawman who begins to question his own motives after being outclassed by Poitier during a difficult murder investigation. Watch closely when Steiger evolves from a racist bigot (which he never really was, deep in his heart) to a man who trusts a "colored" enough to pour out his alcoholic-soiled soul to Tibbs, this is the heart-cliching scene which nabbed Steiger the Golden Prize.

3-0 out of 5 stars An original and intriguing film weighed down by a too often illogical plot
I had been dancing around this French film (with subtitles) for several months, unsure how I would react to it, but I finally took the plunge and booked my passage to The City of Lost Children (La Cité des enfants perdus). Now I could sit here and ooh and aah all over the place about how beautiful and original this film is, but I have to give it to you straight: the story is almost completely illogical. This is one of your "most of what I learned about the film came from reading the plot summary" kind of movie. It's fascinating in its dark, fantastical way, of course, but I would really have liked to have a plot I could follow. The setting is unworldly - it's like they put Tim Burton, a couple of anime directors, Charles Dickens, and scores of German expressionists in a locked room and forced them to collaborate on the design of this world.Fortunately, the film does have one saving grace - young Judith Vittet. Not only does she turn in a masterful performance, she's the only buoy of sanity I could find in this ocean of craziness.
2-0 out of 5 stars Some Images Made Me Gasp, but as to the Plot...Sheesh
This film looks just amazing, but the plot is a jumbled mess of ideas borrowed from other movies and stories and it does not follow through on its own premises. But was there ever a more hideous, striking film image than the one of Daniel Emilfork straight on while dreaming his nightmares? Stunning closeups.
2-0 out of 5 stars b-o-r-i-n-g... but i guess i'm in the minority
I'll preface this by saying that i enjoyed Amelie, have seen my share of French film, admired & loved Dark City, and am not the least bit concerned with the supposed "pedophilism" that certain American conservative kooks apparently project onto the film. However, not long after the movie began i was already checking my watch, which is never a good sign.As visually interesting as the story was, i don't believe there are any interesting nor sympathetic characters. Each role is sorta thrown at the viewer without much rhyme or reason, and none end up as being particularly interesting.Sure, the sets are both blaring and mysterious, simultaneously evoking a mid-century cartoon and a noirish caper flick. The problem is that the story around the interesting visuals is... well... not very interesting.Realizing this is fantasy, i won't mention a dozen plot-holes large enough to sail a mine through, nor will I kvetch about the empty lack of any meaningful purpose for the goings-on that contribute to the lack of identifying with any of the characters.Even with all of the logic stripped out, this film still managed to bore me.Believe me, i wanted to like it, but it just wasn't happening.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOL funny
This collection of Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote is a classic collection of what everyone remembers from his/her childhood, except that I didn't remember these cartoons as been quite as funny as they actually are. From a grown up perspective, these cartoon are hysterical, and I found myself laughing during the whole video (which was unfortunately too short). My only complaint? - that the video was a bit too short at 37 minutes. I wish that there were more videos of this duo (WB - hint, hint). This video is just plain fun, especially after a hard day. Oh yeah, good for kids, too! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars A PLEASING AND ENJOYABLE HORROR COMEDY!
I recommend the film "The Frightners" to anyone who likes a little bit of fun in their horror. The film is not too serious, and there are many comedic elements thrown into the film. Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) portrays a psychic detective, who makes his living by using his talents of the recent and not so recently departed to scare up business. His abilities came when he and his wife were in a car crash. A crash in which she died. However, there is more to her death than he realizes. There are a number of people being killed, and they are being marked with a number on their foreheads. Bannister's wife was also found with a number on her forehead when she died in the car wreck. More importantly however, a serial killer executed many years ago also marked his victims in this manner.
5-0 out of 5 stars Original, funny, and at times scary, a new take on horror
I was pleasently surprised by this movie when I saw it on the bigscreen, and now I'm happy to have it in my collection.Michael J Fox's role as a paranormal investigator/ghost trapper with Hired Help is just a very funny concept.Chi Mcbrie's character I thought made this movie, great comic relief.Jake Busey did a decent job at being a bad guy.I have seen this probably 8 times, and still find it funny. It holds me if I find it flipping through channels.Nice one to have in the collection. I only own the original version, worth investing into directors cut to see what has been added.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghost Busters With A Kick
If You Love Any Kind Of Ghost Movies This Should Be A Definite Buy! This Movie Is Funny And Creepy At All The Right Moments And Michael Fox Gives An Outstanding Performance Throughout. And Not To Mention The Acting Done By Jake Busey Was Also Incredible. This Is An All Out Fun Film That Should Definitely Get Picked Up, Especially If You Like Any Of Peter Jacksons Works. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars FRACTURED FAIRY TALES REDUX
TWISTS OF TERROR is an import from Montreal TV and its quite good for one of those anthology horror movies. The first tale, "The People You Meet" brings us Jennifer Rubin and Carl Marotte as a couple on their second honeymoon, who are forced off the road by a speeding sportscar. They get a lift from a doofus who you can tell is not what he seems. They pick up another hiker (who just happens to be a friend of doofus) and they kidnap Marotte and Rubin and take them to an abandoned cabin. The twist in this one isn't obvious, but its results are.Nice little tale. The second tale, "The Clinic" is a little less effective and drawn out.You can pretty much figure out what's going on once Nick Mancuso goes into this out of the way clinic.Mancuso does an okay job, but it's too predictable to have a twist. The final story, "Stolen Moments" focuses on the lovely Francoise Robertson who plays a lonely woman who picks up a guy (Andrew Jackson) in a bar and then meets him and his friend for a night of wild love in a house they are "sitting."The twist in this one is pretty shocking and had me fooled.4-0 out of 5 stars Twists of Terror?Hmmm...
Well, the very first time I saw this I thought it was OK - 2nd was a little bit better.. Well, as described below the theme in these spooky ookychillers is that every story has twists in them.. 1st story was prettygood, some ov the parts were a bit obvious, though... 1st story is justreally based on total hatred between this one couple, and it makes usomewhat think ifyou too are being cheated / hated on, heh..2nd story -This one fat guy tries to leave out ov state on business or something, buthe has to put gas.. Anyway, he does, but this one really really mean dog(is he from hell! ) has other plans for him, after repeatedly biting himviolently, he runs into a rather lonely, obscure hospitol, but are thesedoctors really doctors!Oooo.. 3rd and last story - Quite possibly themost surprising, I didn't see this one coming at all.. This is basicallyabout a very lonely / depressed young woman that is in desperate need ovsomeone to be with, finally she ends up meeting this one tall guy at a bar,and BAM! They start seeing each other - But at the end this guy reallyscrews up bad, and I do mean bad... The main girl on here is a hottie! Idon't wanna ruin anything so... I will stop here, and let u see this for urself.. Pros : Nice acting, great atmosphere, pretty-hot girlie in laststory, nice sex! :)Cons : Not the most original movie out there, ok whocares? Anyway, this flick is well worth ur time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE !

4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas in Hawaii! However you may end up babysitting...
I rarely missed an episode of 'Magnum P.I.' when it ran on primetime in the eighties and I still occasion to watch an episode on cable TV when the opportunity presents itself. The four person cast of Tom Selleck, John Hillerman, Roger Mosley and Larry Manetti worked together excellently; equally compelling were the recurring characters, whether from Magnum's days in the Navy intelligence or Higgins' days in the British military each was a brilliantly conceived foil to both of them. That series chemistry is present here in this Christmas themed episode that revolves around a recently acquired Gauguin painting and a group of five preteen schoolgirls.5-0 out of 5 stars The best show ever!
I really liked this Magnum p.i. I found it to be very interesting and also it is packed with alot of action and adventure! It was all the things I love in a show.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, light and delightful...
Audrey Tautou makes this film more than what it would be without her. That's not to say that the plot is mediocre but without her the film itself wouldn't have stood out.As Amelie Audrey is wonderfully delightful, a true free spirit and a classic comedic talent. When Amelie finds a hidden tin in her apartment that belonged to a previous tenant she becomes determined to return it and once she has she decides to help others around her, from her father who's always wanted to vacation but never has because of Amelie's supposed heart condition as a child, to her workmate who needs a man.She tries helping an old man in her apartment as well as a tyrant grocer's assistant. But in the end she ends up helping herself for once and everything ends up happy. It's a very sweet story that's elevated by a brilliant performance by Audrey.

This is the most horrible movie i have ever seen, or course not counting 2 or 3. Now disney has put out some good stuff but this is just crap. Disney needs to clean up its act and hire som good actors and actresses.

The tangled forest is misty with mystery, the thatched cottages are cute and quaint, and the dashing rogues are devious charmers, but this revision of "Little Red Riding Hood" is not your usual fairy tale. In the troubled dreams of an adolescent girl in the hormonal rush of puberty, it becomes a veritable werewolf story with lush storybook imagery, gothic horror flourishes, and decidedly sexual implications. Director Neil Jordan, who collaborated with author Angela Carter in this 1985 adaptation of her story, applies a knowing intelligence to the bittersweet tale. The often startling transformation effects may appear primitive compared to modern movies, but the delight is in the dark imagination, dense textures, and fantastical wonders of this dream world. Angela Lansbury is the story-spinning granny and David Warner the understanding woodsman father, and watch for a devilish cameo by a sinister and seductive Terence Stamp. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Company of Wolves? sounds like my office...not a looker amongst 'em. :)
anyway, yeah, this movie is very well made for the time period(early 80's). it's a literist's and horror aficionados mixed bag of goodies with gore galore and symbolism aplenty! The usual female coming of age story of first experiences with womanhood and the opposite sex and how to tame them and man's eternal struggle with the voracious beast within that wants to "eat" blossoming females.i could go on, but i think you get the point.the screenplay was actually written by famed author angela carter who deals with such subjects as children's fairy tales and adult "fairy tales" of sexual politics.in the end, what difference does it make?either you become a wolf yourself or become the prey. either way you're dammmmmmnnnnneeddd.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Company

Editorial Review

When he emerged from film school in the mid-1980s, director Phil Joanou was touted as the next Steven Spielberg, perhaps because Spielberg took him on as a protégé briefly. Since then, it's been "Phil who?" thanks to a series of mediocre thrillers like this one. Based on one of a series of novels by James Lee Burke about a troubled ex-cop named Dave Robicheaux, this film sat on the shelf for a couple of years before finally being released in 1995. Alec Baldwin plays Robicheaux, a recovering alcoholic who has put life on the New Orleans police department behind him--until a plane crashes in the lake next to his house. He rescues a young Central American girl from the wreck and adopts her--and winds up involved in a gumbo of drug running and dirty dealing involving an old pal named Bubba. Tip-off that this movie should have gone straight to video: Bubba is played by Eric Roberts. Redeeming feature (at least for men, who are all dogs, as everyone knows): a Teri Hatcher nude scene. Phil Janou proves once his admirable gifts as Director thanks to his powerful visual narrative and daring shot angles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Airport '77 is all wet
Airport '77 is the story of bazillionaire Phillip Stevens (a slumming James Stewart) who is jetting some of his friends and colleagues and others on a luxury 747 to view his art collection which is going to become a museum, because, as we learn later...he has A FEW MONTHS TO LIVE!!! Unfortunately, some hijackers unleash some gas on the passengers and plan to swipe the artwork. But the plan goes awry when the plane crashes into the Bermuda Triangle.1-0 out of 5 stars The Sequels Have Never Been That Great
Since Arthur Hailey had his book "Airport" published which was later made into a movie in 1970, it became successful. The sequels that followed: Airport 1975 (1974) and Airport '77 (1977) did not have that big of a success, though the former fared better at the box office. I was not really that impressed with the latter in scientific terms. The plane crashes at sea and sinks to the bottom when only the forward cargo hold flooded. There was plenty of air inside the rest of the plane that, in reality, could keep it afloat for as long as it was available. The characters, like Airport 1975, overacted as well. Karen Wallace (Lee Grant) was an obnoxious alcoholic who was constantly rude to husband Martin Wallace (Christopher Lee) a professional scuba diver who drowns while accompanying Captain Don Gallagher (Jack Lemmon) to the surface to send out a mayday signal. She goes nuts and tries to open a door before she is subdued and kayoed by first stewardess and girlfriend of Gallagher, Eve Clayton (Brenda Vaccaro). There have been some sequels in the past that have meaning, but most are a waste of a movie watcher's time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quite primative, much room for improvement.
What can i say? There isn't much to say. A simple plot and not much to grab your attention, but some well known actors are present, so judge it how you will. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Meledramatic and poor
As much as I like Paul Newman, this movie is very disappointing once you've seen the far-superior film "Day One".The portrayal of Oppenheimer and Groves is overly dramatic and totally unlike the behavior of real professional people. The movie dwells on romantic side stories instead of fleshing out the history and science of the Manhatten project.
5-0 out of 5 stars Movie "Fat Man and Little Boy"
I gave this to my Husband for our Annivisary. After our recent visit to Sante Fe, New Mexico, visiting the 109 South Palace Place and going through Los Alamos he really got interested more in it. Good Movie to watch. Must get the Day after Trinity also if youwatch this one. It is also good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A-Bomb
It turned the making of Atomic Bomb into a story. It give a okay look at it, without a lot of details. I would give it 3 stars, not five. ... Read more

Editorial Review

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Fun
I had never seen this film before purchasing it, but took a chance that I would like it as much as everything else I have seen with Doris Day; I wasn't disappointed. Doris Day and James Garner were great together, it left me wishing that they had made more films together. I had expected it to be cute and fun but I didn't think I would be laughing so much! If your a fan of Doris Day or James Garner then you really can't lose with this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Feel Good Comedy Movie!
The Thrill Of It All is one of my favorite movies and at a tie with Pillow Talk as my favorite #1 Doris day movie and I think this is a very charming cute movie and what I think as a great feel good movie to watch when you are sick or feeling a little down in the dumps! Doris Day and James Garner are great and the kids are really cute, especially Kym Kareth who is famous for playing little Gretel Von trapp in the movie The Sound Of Music.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Average Doris Day & James Garner Comedy
"The Thrill of it All" is o.k., but kind of meanders a bit due to a lack of focus in the script. I did enjoy the kids & the soap suds scene, however. ... Read more

Steve Martin wrote this film as a meditation on both love and Los Angeles (and then-wife Victoria Tennant). He plays a L.A. TV weatherman who finds himself conflicted about what to do with his life, both professionally and personally. As he works his way through a couple of relationships (including a very funny one with a frisky Sarah Jessica Parker, who talks him into colonic therapy), he discovers a L.A. freeway sign that gives him romantic advice. It helps him realize what he knows intuitively: that the British woman he is attracted to (Tennant) is the one he should pursue. A big cast (and lots of cameos) have fun with this witty (if slight) material and director Mick Jackson adds visual pizzazz. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifteen years on and still a joy
This is a lovely film, as full of freshness and as enjoyable as when it was first released. In an age of overdone special effects and slim storylines, L.A. Story still engages us with likeable characters and a wonderful message, and gives us a glimpse of the possible. Talking Freeway signs? Acts of God in the furtherance of True Love? Wonderful stuff that will leave you smiling.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp & Loving At The Same Time
Hard to believe ths movie's 15 years old, as the topic and observations are still fresh.Steve Martin was trying to get away from his "wild and crazy guy" mentality when he gave us this tone poem/left hook to the strangeness that is L.A., and he was able to do so."L.A. Story" is a quiet little film that shows his range as a comic.Yes, he can be silly and physical, but he can also point out the inanities he sees without going overboard, which is a gift.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Magical Journey to True Love
This is the story of a journey to explain that truth can come from very unexpected places - one of the greatest Love Story's ever told, without the glitz and nonsense, and, yet, there's definitely glamour, and Victoria Tennant is the Queen - I get 'lost' in this movie everytime I see it - all the time, you are pulling for both of them, then get mad because they both stray off-course with someone else, but cheer like crazy when his plane gets stranded - a truly wonderful Love Story... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars BORIS KARLOFF? LON CHANEY? TOGETHER AGAIN?
This is a true horror film, one in which I have at the top row of my horror movie shelf. Boris Karloff and Lon C haney are back in another great horror film. Packed with sword fights, murder, jealousey and obsession. Also with a great climax in which the two lovers are trying to escape from THE BLACK CASTLE. Starring Richard Greene,Boris Karloff, Stephen McNalley, Lon Chaney and the beautiful Paula Corday. A true must have horror movie.
