5-0 out of 5 stars Best $10 you'll ever spend on a DVD ...
Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 docu-tribute to the studio musicians that manufactured Berry Gordy's Motown Sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars I now refer to anything Motown as the Funk Brothers
It is one of the great American tragedies that The Funk Brothers is not a house hold name. These musicians are among the Gods of modern music and we all owe them a great debt of gratitude. Put simply without the Funk Brothers there would be no Motown. Name a Motown hit and they made the sound. What's Going On, Papa Was a Rollingstone and My Girl are among my favorite songs of all time and they had everything to do with the music not so much the vocals. This DVD is a must for any library and I encourage you to purchase the deluxe soundtrack which is worth every penny.
5-0 out of 5 stars i just didn't know
I had know idea that these guys were the real sound of Motown. This is an incredible movie one which any music lover needs to see. It doesn't matter what type of music you like this is a must see. The Funk Brothers story must get out. They were "the men". These men had real talent, soul, and passion. This is a recommend/ ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The creator of M*A*S*H wrote this?
I was surprised to see Larry Gelbart wrote the screenplay of this unfunny movie.I can recall very few laughs in this film. The premise of the film is to highlight the greed of the 1980's, but the lesson is quite dated in the era of Enron and WorldCom.The greed here is apparent and at least honest and upfront, in contrast to the dishonesty and deception of some of the greed of the late 1990's.As for the message, I certainly don't think the shareholders of RJR Reynolds minded being courted so well.If I were a shareholder of a slumping company I'd be mighty grateful to live in a society where people have the freedom to pay whatever crazy price they want for my stock!James Garner is wonderful in this show, and the movie does a nice job of laying out the business concepts in terms your grandmother can understand.I do have to confess, however, to dozing a bit in the middle of this movie, so perhaps I missed the funny parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Business with a sence of Humour
Business with humour, nothing better. Great film that combines factually based 1980's greed with a humerous side. Loved it when R & D produced a questionable product, with a distinctive smell and taste :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars 1980's Greed at its Best
Barbarian's at the Gate was one of HBO's first attempt at quality television movie making.HBO has become a ground for stars to do "quality but uncommercial" films. This film does not have any major stars but was produced by Ray Stark (Funny Girl and numerous Neil Simon movies) and written by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H).

Editorial Review

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An endearing, heartfelt family CLASSIC!
This entertaining film adaptation of the great musical is a true classic that you can watch with the whole family.Albeit a bit long (about 3 hours), the storyline is excellent, and can be appreciated by ALL cultures and ethnic or religious backrounds.Topol as 'Tevye' is perhaps one of the best all-time perfect character casting fits ever on film! The video and audio quality of this remaster is impressive as well, as are the DVD extras. If you are a classic film buff, and/or just want a great movie to share with your family, this should be in your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The world is full of naughty schoolboys."
The British film "Personal Services" directed by ex-Monty Python Terry Jones is based on the book "An English Madam" by Paul Bailey. The film begins with a disclaimer stating that it is not a true depiction of the life of the infamous British Madam, Cynthia Payne (Madam Cyn) and advises the viewer to read Bailey's book for details of Payne's life. The protagonist of the film is named Christine Painter (Julie Walters)--a harried waitress in a London restaurant, but Christine has a child in boarding school whose fees must be paid, and so Christine earns extra money by renting out rooms and subletting flats to prostitutes. Now, the idea is that the prostitutes will pay Christine rent, but Christine soon discovers that collecting rent is easier said than done, and before too long, Christine faces her landlord empty-handed. The landlord, however, is fully prepared to make an acceptable alternative arrangement, and Christina slides into prostitution. Read more

I caught this movie on the WE channel at midnight. It was a tear-jerking and at times annoying movie. I didn't care so much for the quick resolution of everyone making up, however, the twins at the end was an interesting touch. Typical Danielle Steel based movie. I've seen others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gross-out gore fest AND well made film
I agree with other critics about the great creativity and mind-blowing characters in Feebles. It is also a really well made movie...special fx, editing, etc.For a relatively low-budget film, the attention to every little detail is really remarkable and compelling.I actually HAD to keep watching, even though I came close to nausea a few times. Now THAT'S good filmmaking.=)

This was bizarre, sick and hysterical. One of my all time faves by Jackson. If you've never seen this, go get it ,dont just rent it. You will never see puppets the same way again. Editorial Review

Art imitates life in this romantic comedy, which casts Reynolds and Hawn as a successful Hollywood screenwriting team. Their harmonious working and romantic relationship goes south when they decide to get married after years of living together. Written by and based on the lives of writers Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin, the film is a decidedly bittersweet affair: after all, Levinson and Curtin got married, then divorced, just like the characters in the movie. Consequently, there's less real humor than kidding as the relationship develops cracks, chinks, and leaks, before foundering altogether. Still, Reynolds and Hawn have a likable chemistry because neither is trying too hard. Watch for a particularly funny and crass cameo by Ron Silver, as a big-shot director they wind up working for. 3-0 out of 5 stars Chop Off the Ends and it's Pretty Good
Based on the real-life experiences of Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, this 1982 romantic comedy works best in the middle, when it's on the road. Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn are longtime screenwriting partners and roommates until Burt pushes for marriage. Goldie reluctantly agrees, and immediately after the civil ceremony the couple launches on a lengthy road trip to meet each other's parents. The trip forms the lion's share of the film, and much of it works quite well. Jessica Tandy & Barnard Hughes (as Goldie's parents in Buffalo) and Audra Lindley & Keenan Wynn (as Burt's folks in northern Virginia) absolutely steal the show. Before and after these stayovers, however, the film falls a bit flat, mainly because the Bandit and the Girl In My Soup are never particularly believable as a couple. Nonetheless, the middle of the film provides sufficient laughs to make it worth a rental. Just skip right to the train trip and turn it off when Burt and Goldie get back to L.A.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Friends
This movie is timeless.I thought it was hilarious when it was first released in the theaters, and found it the same all these years later.Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn at their best!I would say, if you enjoyed the movie Grumpy Old Men, you will find this as entertaining.I was so happy to find it on DVD and add it to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated films.
Most people I know have not seen this movie. In my opinion, it is very underrated.I love it.What's funny is when they visit each other's parents.Jessica Tandy plays Goldie's mom, and she is wonderful.Goldie doesn't want to sleep with Burt in her old room at her childhood home:"This is my teenage room. It's not for sexual relations, it's for slumber parties." ... Editorial Review

This complex and intriguing drama chronicles--with some probable narrative liberties--the chain of events that instigated the provocative Profumo affair, the infamous cold war scandal that toppled Britain's conservative government in the early 1960s. John Hurt stars as charming osteopath Stephen Ward, who grooms a malleable and beautiful teen showgirl, Christine Keeler (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), to party with his swinging high-society friends. Trouble starts brewing when Christine becomes simultaneously entangled with both a Russian diplomat and a British cabinet minister. Once the media learn of her sexual escapades, the reigning Conservative Party comes under fire and begins seeking a scapegoat to distract the public from the dangerous political implications that the affairs represent. Under Michael Caton-Jones's confident direction, the film generates sympathy for its decadent lead characters, and it intelligently explores how private personal matters become vulgar public affairs when political machinations intrude. The most intriguing aspect of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of current resonance...
A very well made and often overlooked film, Scandal is seen by many as slightly farcical in the best tradition of British theatre based, bedroom romps. The nature of the "scandal" seems somewhat tame and run of the mill, seen through modern eyes; we have seen many John Profumo's since and Miss Keeler was a prototype for many a foxy minx on the make, De Sanchas, Lewinski, Hall and Clark to name but a few.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll need a cold shower after this one.....whew!
Erotic! That's it. Review is over! The film pretends to be of historic value but come on.....let's be serious.....it's all about hotter than a pistol Joanne Whalley. She vamps, struts, wiggles, flashes, and sashes her sexuality in a way that hasn't been seen by an actress in a long time! But hold on a minute. If you think you're going to be treated to alot of nudity and raw sex then forget it.....your going to be disapointed. Not in this movie! Corrupt politicians with bimbos.....hey.....we know that tune first hand now don't we? And besides who can really sit through another film of stiff Englishmen without the benefit of some "flash & trash"? The film is hot and yet it's curiously tame considering the subject matter. A captivating work of art. Miss Whalley, and to a lesser degree Miss Fonda, are the stuff that dreams are made of. The montage of the girls getting dressed to Apache is so beautiful and delicious that you will swear that those lips could kiss you right through your TV screen! The bottom line.....don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The painful fall!
The historic scandal that literally embarrassed during a decade the highest spheres of the British politic, was not more than a simple reflect of a state of things originated perhaps, by the collective reaction to forty years of war. The social behavior works out as a big pendulum: it can prove its huge ability to resist. Along those hard years, four generations gave the best of themselves but the fifth generation simply said no more and somehow the pendulum took the opposite direction: in fact having reached the peak, the psychological answer was evasion and funny diversion, breaking the rules vertical and horizontally. It is not a mere coincidence the presence of so many good movies in the comedy genre. Thatis a remarkable evidence and somehow it reminds the same behavior of the last period of the Greeks or any other example. The comedians appear many times at the end of the expansion of any society: epic, tragedy and comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Realistic Story
I found this film to be a very realistic example of lifes issues that a family sometimes experiences.A husband and wife drifting apart, teenage children growing up.All of a sudden a tradgedy happens and the blaming and anger and other emotions start to pile up and the pressures of people who don't really know each other as good as they thought they did starts to surface. Can they keep it together and pull through?Well I'll just say I recommend people watch it,because in our present daily lives maybe everyone can be inspired by this great film!Go ahead and see for yourself--the whole cast was great, especially Ms.DeMornay!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly inspirational
I was really touched by this movie and think it's one of the best movies I've ever seen! The range of emotions and realistic family problems was so real to me.But it goes to show how tradegy can be overcome when people don't give up on each other! I thought Ms.DeMornay and the rest of the cast were great but especially Ms. DeMornay but I think all her characters and movies are great! I very highly recommend this movie for the whole family! Jim.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great story about a family devastated by tragedy.
Well, this movie starts off with the Mahler family, Nora(Rebbeca DeMornay), the mother, Neal(Keith Carradine), the father, Clea(Thora Birch), the daughter and Simon, the son, all living in a ranch ran by Noraherself, where she shares her love of horses (which are raised by hertoo)with Clea and especially Simon, but Neal has never really liked livingthere, which makes him live after her wifes wishes, and which is tearingthem both apart little by little. Then tragedy strikes the whole family, when an accident happens(which I will not reveal), leaving all the family, especially Nora heartbroken and devastated, her devastation and heartbrokeblinds her of everything, she doesn't realize that the other family membersare suffering too, and are devastated too, when her mother Maggie(EllenBurstyn) arrives to the "rescue" the family from tearing apartmore than they already are after hearing the terrible news, she makes Norarealize shes not the only sad person and that she should pay moreattention to whats going on with the family after the accident, especiallyClea(Thora Birch), which is hiding a terrible feeling which is destroyingher little by little.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Is this a good movie? Yes.
If you liked the "Alien Nation" t.v. series (and I can't imagine why you wouldn't), then you will like this movie because it finishes all of the questions that were left unanswered when the idiot network cancelled the series. However, I only gave it 4 stars because parts of it are a little disjointed and because of the four made for t.v. movies that they made after the series ended, this one is my least favorite. If you want to see an absoulute fabulous movie about the alien nation series, then you should watch "The Udara Legacy".It's REALLY cool. Also, there were several books that were written to continue the stories (some of them from the writters who worked on the series), and of those I HIGHLY recommend "Extreme Prejudice". I always wanted them to turn that book into a made for T.V. movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating premise; poor execution
"Dark Horizon" has an exceptionally well-written plot, but the characters leave something to be desired.Aphassno, sent to Earth to retrieve the slaves, is a fascinating character even if he ocasionallymoves his head like Michael Myers. However, the symbolism gets VERYheavy-handed at times and I was forced to fast-foward.Cathy and Sykeshave no chemistry, and the time wasted on developing their relationship isincredibly boring. She and Aphassno are far more believable as lovers andI wish their affair had been more developed.Still, it is a fascinatingmovie and worth your while, especially if you were a fan of the show.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Adorable
I had completely forgotten that this movie existed!I loved it as a small child. My mother let me watch it over and over when I was little because it was so short. It's so precious, and looks so classic and old-fashioned on-screen.I must admit, though, that the animation definitely looks old and today's kids may want to watch Finding Nemo instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars from a fan
my dad read me the book from Rudyard Kippling "the white seal" almost every night till I was 13.It has always been a favorite story of mine. The movie stays true to the book, and actualy quotes it in the begining. My dad baught me the movie on VHS a long time ago, but it wore out after continuous viewing. It is a great movie, I would recomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars making me remember
the Film,Martha and Ethel By Jyll Johnstone Was so Touching it made me think about My own childhood.5-0 out of 5 stars A small glimpse into 2 lives
This documentary was one of the best that I've seen. The film maker did a very good job of capturing the essence of both women. The best thing about the overall story was that it shows how influential our elderly citizens have been in regards to who children become later in life. It's not a coincidence that these women lived long lives. They learned the value of hard work, sacrifice and honest emotion at an early age. Those valuable character traits are the things that provide such fortitude. This film is a wonderful affirmation of those values.

5-0 out of 5 stars it pays having qood memory
I saw this film at the village few years ago, visiting my friends in N.YORK.I was deeply moved of how Jyll Johnstone used this two lovely women to show theirs values and theirs families lives.Amazing the way thisdirector works with emotions, and how colors and the absence of them, confirmwhat she wanted to say. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Our Nation's Story
A Soldier's Story simply has everything working for it, and the result is a frequently overlooked masterpiece that will add depth to any collection of American film.It works as a murder mystery and it works as an astounding inside look into cultural psychology.Certainly the themes of racism - and self-hatred - are universal. But this snapshot of southern race relations in 1944, seen in a military context, is also very specific, and more powerful still because of this specificity.

4-0 out of 5 stars A GLOSSLY TREAT
The late Margaux Hemingway saw her movie career take a nosedive after the release of this film, while her co-star and little sister Mariel became the toast of the town. But to many cinephiles, she'll always be remembered as the woman in red holding one mean rifle. Margaux plays Chris McCormick, a top fashion model (no stretch at all, here, since she really was a top model at the time) who ends up regretting her decision of having innocently invited her sibling's music teacher (Chris Sarandon of "Fright Night" fame) to her apartment. While she cries rape (with the help of Academy award winner Anne Bancroft as her attorney) the judicial system, however, sees it differently. LIPSTICK is the ultimate B-movie extravaganza. Raw to the bone, it is avant-garde cinema with a glossy exterior. David Rayfeil's script spares no details in degrading women via ultra-violent scenes (one a la "The Accused") and a misogynistic message regarding men and feminine beauty. But as a whole--and not too taken seriously--LIPSTICK is 90 minutes of pure fun. The film has a Russ Myer feel to it, a sort of cinema verite of the late 60's (the ones who lured mostly the male clientele). Margaux Hemingway gives all she's got and comes up almost rosy despite her limited range. She may not be Meryl Streep, but, contrary to popular opinion, her performance is believable. Of course, then-12 year old Mariel do steal the show with her quiet but strong delivery. Every nuance of her emotional face shows the making of a great actress, and she did become one for awhile, while her older sister stumbled and stumbled in forgettable Z flicks. LIPSTICK was indeed the apogee of Margaux's career. Far from being Academy award worthy, it is definitely a fave among lovers of cult movies, and with good reasons. Now all it needs is a deluxe DVD edition with all the extra goodies.-----Martin Boucher
5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Acting, Grauitous Sex And A Non Existent Plot!!!
This movie was intended as a "Star Vehicle" for Margaux Hemingway but in reality is a turkey of a movie. In this film Margaux plays Chris, a model who invites her younger sister's teacher to her house. Then the rape scene which follows lasts about 30 minutes. That is about the entire plot for the movie. Chris' rapist gets acquited then he sexually assualts Chris' sister played by Mariel Hemingway. If you like graphic gratuitous scenes of rape then this movie is for you then maybe you should consider some much needed Therapy and Medication. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Zorro #6 - The Man From Spain
I enjoyed these as a child, and still enjoy them as an adult.
4-0 out of 5 stars Guy Williams the Only Zorro!
Of all the Zorros who have slashed through the screen, the one everyone in our generation refers to (including Bandaras) is Guy Williams, who captured a nation from 1957-1959 in Walt Disney's Zorro TV series.

Editorial Review

This disappointment from Jim Jarmusch stars Johnny Depp in a mystery-Western about a 19th-century accountant named William Blake, who spends nearly all his money getting to a hellish mud town in the old West and ends up penniless and doomstruck in the wilderness. A benevolent if goofy Native American (Gary Farmer) takes an interest in guiding Blake on a quest for identity in his earthly journey, but the film is really just a string of endless shtick about inbred woodsmen, dumb lawmen, and a trio of irritable killers. With Robert Mitchum, Iggy Pop, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and a noodling soundtrack by Neil Young. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Surreal West
I have deleted my multi-page review as being irrelevant, and will leave just this:"Do you have any tobacco William Blake?I think this film will become one with Brazil and Clockwork Orange andCitizen Kane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't pay attention to the Amazon review for this item.
I almost never leave a review for any item (maybe I did 1 before this), but I haven't seen a review that misrepresented the item so badly before. The Amazon reviewer for this item says it is a disappointment. That is not really a critical review, and, for me, is it completely untrue.
4-0 out of 5 stars Don't you know who you are?...
The short of it -- William Blake (Depp) takes the train from Cleveland to the end of the line in the Northwest having been promised an accounting position at a mining corporation. He arrives to find the job taken by someone else. He spends the last of his money for drink, helps a woman in the street, one thing leads to another and he's running for his life. He meets an Indian who thinks he's the poet Wm. Blake. And tries to help Blake remember who he is. The whole thing is a surrealistic journey to find his true self.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gems in an adequate setting
This was a television special broadcast in 1991. It melds two of my all-time favorite cartoons, "The Rabbit of Seville" and "What's Opera, Doc?", along with "Baton Bunny" and some framing sequences including Granny, Sylvester, the three bears, and Yosemite Sam. There's also an original bit with Daffy, Porky, and the William Tell Overture.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Bugs ever!
I bought this video (well, actually, I had to order it, it was so popular at the time!) in 1993 while working at a Warner Bros. store because I loved the cartoons (especially the Wagner-piece) and said I wanted it in case I ever had kids.Well, almost ten years later, my kids (now seven and five) LOVE this video!(So do I!)For any Bugs fan and/or classical music buff, this is a MUST!

5-0 out of 5 stars "What's Opera, Doc?"
I think this video contains the classic "What's Opera, Doc?" Bugs dressed in the disguise of a young maiden and Elmer Fudd with his magic helmet on to help him "kill the rabbit," sing "Return My Love." Elmer falls for the maiden until she looses her golden locks. But it doesn't end there. It stays true to Opera and sort of has a tragic ending. The animation, graphics, and humor are a true materpiece. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Road Runner is a hero
Road runner is a hero of the great american highway because he does something that we all do, bot don't always get away with.. He speeds. He gets away from the symbolic highway patrol (Coyote) every time... In a sense, the Road Runner and the Coyote chase is played out every day on the American Road. It will be a sad day if the Coyote ever gets the ultimate victory over the Road Runner. The fun will be over for all of us who have enjoyed these great cartoons and driving the american road over the years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cartoons.
This is a good cartoon collection for all ages. WHOA, BE GONE and GUIDED MUSCLE are both pretty good cartoons. RABBIT'S FEAT includes Wile E. Coyote with Bugs Bunny instead of the Road Runner. He has no better luck with the rabbit than the bird. STOP! LOOK! AND HASTEN! is the first great Road Runner cartoon. HOPALONG CASUALTY is very good. It includes the classic earthquake pills gag. This tape is worth buying to add to your collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Walk a mile in Jarman's shoes...
Much has been written about this fine work, the last by innovative British filmmaker Derek Jarman.A rumination on AIDS, produced when he was rendered blind by the disease, the film consists of a soundtrack of Jarman's narration surrounded by a collage of music and sound effects; the screen itself is just the color blue, never changing during the running time of the film.Seen in a darkened theater, the blue screen almost staring at you, "Blue" is a very moving experience - you're really put in Jarman's shoes as he takes a journey through a terminal illness that has robbed the filmmaker of his sight. On home video, the impact of what some have criticised as a "gimmick" might be minimized, but "Blue" is a remarkable achievement worthy of checking out.Turn out the lights, screen it on a big tv to fill the room with the solid color and give it a try.It might surprise you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
There's nothing else in the world of cinema like this beautiful brilliant movie, this Blue. From Jubilee to Blue is an amazing arc indeed, and this, Derek Jarman's last film, is a marvel of music and color and poetry. To be with Jarman's film from the opening "O Blue come forth" to the final "I place a delphineum, blue, upon your grave" is to be in the presence of genius. He is deeply missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Untitled Blues
"I fall into a blue funk..." says the narrator about 10 minutes into this film. An understatement by far. Blue is a brooding spoken-word epic that traces the mind of a person (Jarman himself) who is in the advanced stages of AIDs. Jarman died from AIDs-related causes in 1994. The text, excerpted from Jarman's sublime book about color, CHROMA, riffs on the nature of the color blue--literally and metaphorically. These are melancholy, but not necessarily sad, meditations on the various "blues" the speaker has experienced throughout his life in general and his sickness in particular. True to the visionary nature of many of Jarman's films (The Last of England and Jubilee, for instance), Blue is a lush, experimental tour-de-force: there are no images accompanying the dialogue in this film, only an empty, glowing, aqua-marine blue screen that overwhelms the potential sadness of this film with a Tabula-Rasa like radiance. Aesthetically, this is a beautiful, but radical choice; viewers of this film will have to focus entirely on the fragmentary dialogue, without the help of images to keep distractions at bay. Politically, this choice sums up Jarman's artistic modus operandi: he is interested in work that leaves plenty of space for the viewer's imagination to fill in the narrative blanks. Jarman's empty blue screen shows the director working to not pin-down the experience of sickness and death too firmly. My only criticism of this films is that sometimes the dialogue becomes too melodramatic, undermining the understated visual component, All in all, however, Blue is an intoxicatingly morose film that, in spite of the lack of images, manages to engage the viewer throughout its duration. ...
