Editorial Review

Jim Jarmusch's 1991 ensemble comedy turns a gimmick into a revelation. The story begins in Los Angeles one evening at 7:07 p.m. A talent agent (Gena Rowlands) gets into the back of a taxi driven by a sullen, chain-smoking young woman (Winona Ryder), and over the course of their bumpy conversation, Rowlands's character becomes convinced that the cabby would be perfect for a particular part in a movie. Meanwhile, at that very moment, taxi drivers in New York, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki are all having unique encounters with a variety of fares, breaking through that invisible social barrier between the front and back seats of their cars, often to absurd or touching effect. Among them are cabby Roberto Benigni's ranting confessions to a priest, Armin Mueller-Stahl's relinquishing of the wheel to a stunned Giancarlo Esposito, and Isaach De Bankolé's relentless discussion of sight and sex with an angry, blind woman (Beatrice Dalle). What emerges is a chain of brief intimacies (not always welcomed by the characters), like a number of matches lit simultaneously across the globe, flickering brightly for a few short moments. This popular work by Jarmusch helped confirm his reputation as a fiercely independent filmmaker of rare perception, rigor, and classical sensibility matched with original thinking. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars fun flick
Watch this one with friends. The Italian part had me laughing so hard I hurt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh. My. God.
If you haven't seen this 1991 classic comedy, see it now. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Night on Earth
I watched this film late at night, when every sane person is supposed to be asleep, out of their cars and in their beds.Life still goes on, however, for the taxi-drivers who move people from one quiet location to another in the wee hours of the night. The locations are quiet, but the people are not, and the dialogue in this movie is humorous, meaningful, and real.A temporary bond is formed between passenger and driver (sometimes the roles are even reversed, as in the New York vignette featuring Helmut Grokenberger and YoYo, played by Armin Mueller-Stahl and Giancarlo Esposito, respectively).Armin Mueller-Stahl, born in 1930, may be relatively unknown to American audiences (as opposed to, say, Rosie Perez), but he did play Vertikoff in the George Clooney flick "The Peacemaker" (1997).Who is the stranger at the wheel who is responsible for bringing one home? What kind of person drives late at night, waiting for the dispatcher's call to a new address?A passenger has to pay him or her at the end of the ride, but there is still a feeling of gratitude, and even affection, towards this gruff conveyor of souls."You're a good man, Mika," the half-drunk, initially hostile, Finnish workers tell their driver (played by Matti Pellonp) at the end of their journey.Or a battle of wits takes place, as evidenced by the Paris vignette.Ivorian actor Isaach De Bankol (who also appears in Jim Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes") is great here as a luckless "taxiste" whose prying questions are turned against him by his blind passenger (played by Batrice Dalle).Roberto Benigni is of course hilarious, and does here what he does best: rapid, hilarious dialogue with a lot of gesticulation and wide grins. He and the actor who plays the priest (not a bishop), Paolo Bonacelli, have been co-stars before: on the Benigni vehicle "Johnny Stecchino." 5-0 out of 5 stars DVD?Hello....
Maybe someone can explain why this truely Amazing anthology is not on DVD.Given the glut of tv series that have been released, that "Amazing Stories" remains locked away is criminal.[Oddly enough, the most interesting (if short lived) tv series ever made - Level 9, First Wave, Special Unit 2, Dark Skies, Prey, Swift Justice, Strange Luck - remain in blackout.Heck, Firefly, the Lone Gunmen, and Crusade made it to DVD and they lasted no longer than a number of these equally well made shows.]It's just a shame.

I can seriously relate to the characters in the mission. My grandfather was a tailgunner during WWII. Once he was sick and unable to go on a mission. His entire crew and plane were destroyed on take-off. And where would I be? Out of existance. Steven Spielberg directs the first in a series of Amazing stories, a story about heart and survival. Kevin Costner is the captain of a crew of airmen in WWII. The Bellygunner dreams one day of drawing for Disney, and hopes as soon as the war is over, to work in the land of magic.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Unsung Gem of a TV Movie
Featuring the young Alec Baldwin at his most compelling, Dress Grey(screenplay by Gore Vidal), is a political murder mystery with a SouthernGothic touch.Fans of "Advise and Consent," "The BestMan," etc. will enjoy the slightly over-the-top military-schoolmachinations of a bunch of fine character actors like Hal Holbrook, AlexisSmith, Lloyd Bridges, Eddie Albert et al, and mystery fans won't bedisappointed by the plot, which has plenty of twists and turns and even acouple of truly tense and suspenseful moments.Frank discussion ofhomosexuality in military school setting my be a turn-off for some (and aturn-on for others, for whom Baldwin and fellow students provide plenty ofeye-candy.)Long enough for more than one bowl of popcorn, consistenlyinteresting, a must-see. Not sure what the diffence is between the slightlydifferent prices and number of tapes listed here, I have viewed the doubletape version, buy others at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A suspensful miltary thriller set in the 1960's!
This video deals with a miltary school in the 1960's. A cadethas died. The miltary are looking into the matter. Everyone issuspect. Alec Baldwin plays a cadet who gets set up during the trial of his fellow cadet. The movie is fast as the miltary is trying to avoid a media frenzy on the base. This movie also deals with gays and the miltary. There is a slight hint that maybe the cadet was killed by a gay lover. Of course the miltary back then would not like this stuff out to the media. The movie is a very suspenseful thriller in the 1960's! This video features an an all star cast Alec Baldwin(The Hunt For Red Ocober,Mecury Rising),Lane Smith(Superman TV series)Lloyd Bridges(the hot shot movies) and others! look for some up and coming stars in this video as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No DVD for English audiences?
Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the most inspired and creative directors alive. Anyone who has followed his films and likes them would agree. The "making of" extras on "The Longest Engagement" reveals how a director and a cohesive team of actors, technical experts, and artistic visionaries can collaborate over a long period of time to produce true works of art. "Amelie" is probably my favorite movie, because of its sheer beauty and how it touches my soul with a simple, human story. "City of Lost Children" also survives countless re-watching to explore its bizarre depths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seasonal Classic
I'm an avid movie maniac.I have certain films that I can only watch at certain times of the year, and do, every year.Other Peoples Money, starts off my fall movie viewing, after Halloween of course.I love the new England Autumn charm of this film. The story is good, dialogue clever and the chemistry between Miller and DeVito is scary. An unlikely romanic couple if ever there was.A Classic in my book!

5-0 out of 5 stars OPM- Used in my Business Management classes...
There is no nudity in this movie but there are some vaguely sexual discussions.Even some adults might miss the true points being made but you may want to consider that before allowing children to see OPM.
5-0 out of 5 stars New England Wire & Cable
Other People's Money is a wonderful movie, full of smart dialogue, good music, and a terrific Danny DeVito performance. DeVito is his usual funny, and easy-going self, while Gregory Peck is a strong-willed patriarch.Very good stuff there. The weakest performance is from Penelope Ann Miller, who isn't really convincing as the corporate attorney, but the material is so good that it saves the movie. This is a 5 star film, however, it loses a 1/2 star, because of the last scene, which feels a bit tacked on.Otherwise, a smart and funny film from the director of Moonstruck. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Please release on DVD!
I used to love watching this as a child.Even though it's mostly made of repurposed looney tunes shorts that you can probably get elsewhere, the daffy-wants-gold-from-wishing-well plot is brilliant.I hope to see this out on DVD soon to share with my kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great movie with a great finale!
I used to rent this movie and used to pretend the fake wishing well at the water store was the well in this movie. I like the finale when after the last three wishes are used, the well says, "And now I say without the jokes-Th Th That's all folks!" 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Cast and Writer
If you enjoyed "Foxfire" or "The Dollmaker", you will love this too. If you have seen this already be sure to check the other two I mentioned. Susan Cooper is an outstanding writer to have written such great stories of how people cope with lifes events. Some wonderful and some heartbreaking, we learn to move on and embrace the best of what we have had and lost. Cronyn and Tandy are perfect for their roles and will draw you into this story as though it happened to you. This is one of the best Hallmark has to offer. I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Predictable, middling "romantic comedy"...
This is a rather bland film.It is the usual boring, insipid romantic comedy that Hollywood should stop making, as they are so silly and unbelievable.Janeane Garofalo, who I consider an immensely intelligent person, is not really right here. She has a disdain throughout the film (except when she turns on the sarcasm, which is the real Janeane), like she doesn't really believe in the material. She's far too smart and cynical to really pull this kind of film off, even though, if they cast another actress, it would still be a middling film. The film is not horrible, but it's nothing really special. The biggest asset it has is that it's filmed in Ireland. The locations are magnificent, and the filmmakers should be commended for shooting there. The film would be absolutely abysmal if it was shot somewhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous, delightful
Hi,
4-0 out of 5 stars "Matchmaker, Matchmaker, make me a match..."
"The Matchmaker" is a charming comedy set in rural Ireland and starring an unlikely heroine: Janeane Garofalo, better known as a stand-up comedienne who's worked with Ben Stiller, SNL, and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Janeane stars as Marcy Tizard, harried assistant to Senator John McGlory in the middle of his reelection campaign. The campaign isn't going well, and McGlory and his chauvinistic, power-hungry handler Nick (Denis Leary) send Marcy to Ballinagra, Ireland to look up the senator's Irish roots in a bid to connect with Irish-American voters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie
This extended edition of the movie is great. My favorite extended scene is saruman's death. The theacterial version was 3 hours and 20 minutes this extended edition is 4 hours and 10 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye popper
So, eve though it is a long one, I dont mind sitting down and watching it. It was never boring to me, and I think it is the best of the three. This series of movies was very well done by the books. As this does not happen very often, I was impressed.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the Questions Answered
With 50 minutes of film that was not in the theatrical release of Return of the King, this director's cut should satisfy just about everyone. Two important scenes, the murder of Saruman by Grima Wormtongue and the healing of Eowyn by Aragon, eliminate the gaps.In addition, the meeting between Eowyn and Faramir actually takes place so we are not wondering why they are together at the coronation of Aragon and a tense scene where Frodo and Sam (dressed in armor as Orcs) are almost discovered by the enemy. There are smaller restored scenes that, in retrospect, help to explain some details. For example, why does Gandalf appear without his staff during the battle of Plennor Fields?Because the Witch King appeared and shattered it!This is not an essential scene but it adds detail. Many battle scenes were included and gave the puffy-faced Orc commander who declares "the time of the Orc has come" some additional exposure, and we know who ends up killing him.

Like alot of you, I think this collection is good but there was better Tim Meadows stuff. Does anyone remember the skit where Jeff Goldblum was interviewing him for a job and he was wearing the "Hawaii 88" shirt. I was in tears laughing at that one.

He's certainly deserving of a dvd for his best material...

4-0 out of 5 stars A good tribute that could have been just a little better.
My thoughts on the 'Best of Tim Meadows' are a bit mixed.First of all, it's great to see that this best of set was made.Meadows was a cast member of SNL at least as long as anyone since the show's inception (perhaps the longest). He is very deserving of this recognition. During that time he played all kinds of characters, from tough to sensitive, from goofy to dead serious. He also had a very wide range.Therein lies a big flaw with this tape. While it contains many skits that are very funny in general, it also leaves out many that showed Meadow's true talent.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
"The Three Faces of Eve" is by far one of the best movies about people with multiple personalities (Alfed Hitchcock's "Psycho" being the other).Joanne Woodward gives an incredible performance as Eve White, a typical housewife with a little daughter who seems to fall under these little "spells" during which she can't remember a thing. Her husband, Ralph, takes her to see a psychiatrist (played brilliantly by Lee J. Cobb) and after a few sessions they find that Mrs. White is home to not one, but two very different personalities - Mrs. Eve White and Miss Eve Black.Eve Black is a fun-loving young woman who enjoys living life - while destroying Eve White's.Soon Eve Black and Eve White both get "spells" and a third personality who calls herself Jane appears. This story is absolutely incredible as in the end only one personality can stay around.I am truly impressed with Joanne Woodward's ability to change between personalities with the drop of a pin, but the most amazing thing to me is that this is a true story.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good film about split personalities

5-0 out of 5 stars Black and White but very good

5-0 out of 5 stars Aussies show the way with a little help from Indy
A great yarn with a little bit of poetic licence. Although based on a true theatre of operation in the Middle East, Indy gets involved with the Aussie "Diggers" of the Australian Light Horse. He befriends them and become great mates. A ripping yarn with great excitement and well put together. The action could have been a little more intense as it was in the Australian Movie "The Lighthorsemen". Albeit, I enjoyed it and found it pretty accurate for its historical content. The only thing thing it doesn't show is how the British stuffed up, like they did everywhere else during WW1.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: NOT for children
Although this movie has no rating, (and why is that?) I would say it is the equivalent of a PG-13.The film contains quite a bit of violence and violent themes.War scenes.Guns firing.Man falling off cliff including hitting the ground. And the scene that made me turn it off showed a close up of Young Indiana stabbing a man including close-up of knife going in and out of his stomach.Parents beware."Not rated" does NOT mean it didn't deserve one!

1-0 out of 5 stars bad

4-0 out of 5 stars Last Winter a wonderful family movie for prairie people
This is a lovely movie, especially for family viewing. It accurately depicts children's life growing up in the Canadian prairies, back in the 1940s when things were much different from today. Director Kim Johnston is actually retelling his own childhood so the attention to accurate detail is excellent. Shot in western rural Manitoba and in Winnipeg, this will touch the soul of the viewer, especially if they have any personal link to that part of the world. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don' t take it too seriously!
If you have nothing to do, the weather is rainy and cold and there is nothing to watch or even read in your home, come for this amazing and grotesque characterization. It is delirious portrait of fantastic humor, if I may use this term.
2-0 out of 5 stars "She may have been contaminated."
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman has the best poster of any monster movie from the 1950s, but it's one of the cheapest sci-fi pictures I've ever seen. I saw it yesterday at a local theater as part of a double feature with the giant ant classic Them!, including cartoon, trailers for films like the Ronald Reagan western Law and Order (another film directed by Nathan Juran), and a 1934 Flash Gordon serial.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Challenge of Eric Stoner
Stud Poker has always been as American as Hot Dogs and Coca-Cola. There is a comfortable, sophisticated and mystical feel to the stories which deal with gamblers. From the cool jazzy world of New Orleans, comes the story of Eric Stoner (Steve McQueen) who believes he has got what it takes to beat "The Man" (Edward G. Robinson, in one of his finest roles) known as Lancy Howard. The stakes are much higher than the poker pots they play to win. For Eric, there is the fame and prestige of being called 'The Man', the very best when it comes to playing cards. Even his girl-friend is second in the ambitious rise of the talented poker player. The 'Man' on the other hand has a formidable reputation to safeguard, whilst the 'Kid" has youth, vitality and considerable skill to possibly unseat the one individual who hold court over the green felt world of cards. In a marathon-like winner-take-all, the two fathom the other's resolve. With the memorable talents of Karl Malden as Shooter, Rip Torn as William Slade, Jack Weston as Pig, Cab Calloway as Yeller, Ann-Margret as Melba and Tuesday Weld as Christian, the film evolves into a classic from sheer star power. ****

4-0 out of 5 stars classic poker film set in New Orleans
OK, first of all, I live in New Orleans and I play poker. This is a movie about playing poker in New Orleans, so naturally, I eventually came across this film.I really enjoyed it, but would agree that it is not the best movie ever. The scenes of New Orleans are great. The poker is so-so.It is all 5 card stud, a game no longer played.A nice treat was the feature commentary by Phil Gordon who has a few insights on "making the fish as uncomfortable as possible".Also there is a featurette about how to cheat at cards and trick shuffling by a pro that is impressive.Every poker player should watch this movie if only to get the references to it that pop up over and over again (see first few pages of Dan Harrington's tournement stategy book (forget which volume)).

In yet another example of Demi Moore's astonishing narcissism, this appalling adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Great American Novel becomes a teary, talk-show-worthy story of a woman rediscovering the erotic, of interrupted love, of a brave-but-beleaguered heroine's personal struggle against male stupidity. Never mind that this has little to do with Hawthorne's magnificent, protofeminist book, which is a million times more relevant today than this film could ever be. Director Roland Joffé (Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the book, but a decent romantic comedy...er...drama!
The first thing you have to do to get anything out of this movie at all is to forget the book. Completely. The movie so 'freely adapts' the book, that really all that remains of the book's plot is a ghost of a germ of an idea about a Puritan woman who gets pregnant by someone who is not her husband. That's about where the similarity ends. Secondly, you must be willing to approach this movie with something of a split perspective: on the one hand, it is a perfectly enjoyable story of romance; on the other, it has some really funny moments that were not intended to be funny at all. Like the love scene. It's both hot and hilarious at the same time. All that falling (catch the symbolism!) grain everywhere...goodness! Hope it didn't get anywhere...sensitive. Another hilarious scene is when Robert Duvall holds up baby Pearl screaming "THE DEVIL'S OWN CHILD!"And that dance he did with the deer carcass...kinda bloody but still funny as hell. Finally, realize that this movie is unabashedly a Demi-fest, as in see Demi look Defiant, see Demi look Witchy, see Demi look Sexy.... you get the idea. And sometimes you'll wonder if Gary Oldman wasn't having to hold back a chuckle or two himself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Looking Picture
The movie opens considerably in advance of the novel's first scene, and the script by Douglas Day Stewart delves deeply into early events only hinted at in Hawthorne's tale. Much of this background, despite being speculative, works, although it takes forever for the romance between Hester and Dimmesdale to get off the ground. Once we get through the scene with the two groping in a barn, things start moving. When the Puritan colonists of 17th century Boston discover that Hester, the wife of an absent English doctor, is pregnant by a man whose name she refuses to yield, she is thrown into prison until the child is born. Dimmesdale pleads with her to let him reveal the truth, but she extracts a pledge of silence from him. Her eventual punishment for fornication and adultery is to wear a scarlet "A" on her breast at all times to remind the townspeople of her sin. However, when her long-lost, presumed dead husband, Roger Chillingworth (Robert Duvall), arrives after a period spent as an Indian captive, his wife's public humiliation does little to sate his need for vengeance, a cause to which he devotes all his efforts. Credit should be given to the film makers for attempting to adapt a classic American novel for modern audiences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let us not forget.....
Good movie. Let us not forget John 8:7: "He who is without sin, among you, let him cast the first stone". I think the puritians forgot that!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treat!
Another brilliant and entertaining British mystery. There is something here for everyone. Helen Mirren is, as always, superb. There is a wonderful attention to detail, and delightful character development. As the storyunfolds, there are enough twists and turns to intrigue the mostsophisticated of mystery fans. Tired as I was when I saw this, I could nottear myself away, and finally and wisely bought my own copy so that I couldwatch again without missing a moment. Treat yourself to a great evening ofentertainment. You'll find yourself watching this one more than once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helen Mirren shines again
The Painted Lady is a marvelous movie in which Helen Mirren delivers a ferocious performance as a former blues singer in search of the killers of her landlord. Her portrayal alone, which spans the spectrum of humanemotion from roaring rage to wounded pain deserves an Emmy. The plot attimes get a little murky, but stick with Mirren everytime and she'll showyou what is still good about television. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good; notice caution
I ordered this to use with my 1st grade music class after we did a unit on "Carnival of the Animals".Even though much of the humor was over their heads, they really enjoyed Bugs and Daffy's shenanigans and recognized the individual pieces as they were played by the orchestra. My only note of caution is that because in today's language, some formerly innocuous words now have derogatory meanings, I deemed it necessary to skip over the introductory and closing remarks to "Wild Jackass".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Grandchildren
This is a great video for grandchildren in the age range of 2-6 year. Its a splendid way to introduce children to the delights of classical music. Our grandchildren insisted on taking our copy back to their home.We alsorecommend other puppet videos by Jim Gamble - including a) Peter and theWolf; b) Peer Gynt; c) Nutckracker Suite; and d) Hansel & Gretel.Theyare all excellent and the best of their kind. ...
