4-0 out of 5 stars Another great Irish movie!
Liam Neeson was terrific as Michael Collins. We already know how this story turns out but the acting glued me to the screen for the entire movie.I'm always glad to see Steven Rea and Brendan Gleeson show up in a movie, as they both make it seem very real and natural. This one totally satisfied my Irish movie craving.

1-0 out of 5 stars i like the movie but this dvd was a rip-off
I saw this movie a few years ago & enjoyed it so I chose it for my final in a class that analyzed 'historical' movies. When I got this dvd, the main menu was non-existant [it goes straight to the movie], side B was blank & I had no special features. I was unable to see the last 10 sceens of the film or any special features b/c side B was blank.Sure I could return it but that doesn't really solve the problem that I had a 10 page paper where I could not analyze the end of the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Collins
Anyone who knows the story of Michael Collins can appreciate this film. While it is not all inclusive to the trials he faced in the establishment of the Irish Republic, as well as the war against the British Occupation, it does cover the main players in the movement up to his assasination. I was rather disappointed that they did not elaborate more on the treaty talks with the British and the key players involved in the Irish envoy to London, as well as the people involved in the treaty talks for the British. Overall, the movie was very moving and very entertaining, however understanding the Irish movement will require further study by the individual. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Mario movie!
This film is a blast! The action and FX are superb! Now i'll tell you about the characters. #1 Mario, Mario is good and perfect. #2 Luigi, no mustache, but that makes him look better. #3 Daisy, no Peach, but Daisy was always a cooler character in the games then Peach and now she is the damsel in distress. #4 Koopa, okay, they COMPLEATLY MESSED UP KOOPA!! He's supposed to be a dinosaur, but in this film he is a goofy looking guy with a weird looking head. #5 Toad, Toad from what i remember in this movie he's not a mushroom, he's a guy in the city who's turned into a Goomba but he's a good guy. #6 Yoshi, Yoshi is plain adorable! He's not a green dinosaur who leaps around and has a long tounge, he's a baby dinosaur who i'm guessing is a pet for Koopa. He's a hero cause he saved Daisy from Koppa's wife by using the "Yoshi Tounge" move on her. #7 Goomba, Goombas are these big, fat, lizard people that work for Koopa. But one Goomba is nice, Toad. #8 Bob-omb, Yes Bob-omb is in this movie, it is called "The Bomb" and it is just a wind up bomb that walks around and then blows up. There'sa lot more characters, but they really aren't old favorates from the Mario games. Overall, this film rocks! I recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars One giant drug trip...
This movie was just one giant drug trip. If you ever find yourself in an altered state of mind, I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Flick, epic in my eyes, though...
It was summer, 1997.

4-0 out of 5 stars If Phillip K Dick had done Pinochio as a kids film...
It would probably be much like this; two everyman protagonists, themes of loneliness and isolation and yearning, a robot who is far more humane than his human counterparts...
5-0 out of 5 stars Short Cuts In the Casting Department
This was one of my favorite movies when I was six years old. I am no longer six years old, but I still find the use of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding out for a Hero" bittersweet and inspiring. This movie features Ben Jharvi, a loveable indian main character, who is in reality not indian at all but a jewish man named Fisher Stevens covered in brown shoe polish. Had I known this as a child I would have liked it nonetheless, although I probably would have found it slightly offensive.FIVE STARS.

4-0 out of 5 stars The sequel is just as good as the original`
I saw the original Short Circuit when it first came out and recently bought it on DVD.I enjoyed it just as much and found that age had not dimmed the humour.I had no idea a sequel had been made until Amazon emailed me to let me know (that is a great service by the way).Normally sequels are a letdown so I was in two minds whether to order it or not but thought, why not as the price was right.I am pleased that I did as again I thoroughly enjoyed it and can honestly say that the sequel is just as good as the original.Without giving away the storyline, there are some sad moments where I was amazed to find myself empathising with a robot!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
The only reason I own this movie is for the 12 minutes of pure laughter that is portrayed in the second story of this film. Like Twilight Zone and Creepshow, This film is dissected into multiple stories (3). The first one is kind of stupid. The second story is about anger and I have to say this is possibly the funniest Andrew "Dice" Clay I have ever seen. It was worth the money just to watch him in action even if it was really short. The last story has Dennis Leary and involves "lust", it is descent but not as good as Dice.

2-0 out of 5 stars One great segment, but that's it
There is only one reason to buy this film--the second vignette, "Anger."It is the funniest twenty minutes of film I have ever seen.Andrew "Dice" Clay is at his ranting raunchy best, gettingoff some of the best one-liners I've heard in ages.I've shown this topeople who despise Dice, and they've howled. The rest of the film droopsin comparison, despite excellent casting. The powers that be should havesaved me some wear and tear on my VCR and put "Anger" first, because it's the only segment worth watching, believe me.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Lampoon" like it should to be!
After being blown away by another obscure National Lampoon flick, (The Don's Analyst) which was "Analyze This", only better -- I thought I should check this one out too. What's going on here?Anothersurprisingly sophisticated, laugh out loud film with an incredible cast. Denis Leary's "Lust" was a stylish little sexy ditty in the veinof "Rear Window."In "Anger," Andrew "Dice"Clay (who I normally despise) actually made me laugh out loud. But it wasJoe Mantegna in "Greed" that really shocked me.This piece wasnothing short of brilliant. An hour in length, it really is the centerpiceof the whole film, and what makes it a keeper.I found it a cross between"To Die For" and "The Producers".This is sharp satirethe way it used to be in the magazine's hey day.Intelligent, sexy, cutting edge stuff that pulls no punches. This one really has stayed withme. I've watched it several times now and it holds up great.Thesurprise"celebrity" cameos are a real hoot but they also lend aninvaluable authenticity to the story. How come this wasn't in thetheaters? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Mike Judge, the creator and voice of MTV's insouciant Beavis and Butt-head characters, made his feature film directorial debut with this full-length B&B misadventure, which finds the boys going on a cross-country adventure after their all-important television set is stolen. Fans of the now-defunct TV show will obviously enjoy this film the most, though almost anyone with a passing awareness of the characters will find something to chuckle about. (The funniest recurring gag finds beleaguered B&B neighbor Tom Anderson constantly sabotaged by the guys while on vacation.) Celebrity voices are fun to pick out, particularly that of David Letterman, who rather appropriately plays Butt-head's long-lost father. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's quite surprising how much it holds up
Before South Park came on the air and offended practically everybody with cripple fights to cooking parents in chili to saying the S word a record 162 times, there was Beavis and Butthead. Found on MTV, the pair were crude and just plain moronic who laughed at even the mention of dirty words bringing out the popular catchphrase "uh-huh, you said ". After the show ended, the pair got their own movie and became a surprise hit so who would've guessed that it's actually still funny?
3-0 out of 5 stars There's lots of 'slots' in Vegas
The hit MTV cartoon Beavis & Butthead from creator Mike Judge truly was at its peak when they released this movie 10 years ago. In fact, I remember rushing out to see it in the movie theater. Twice. This is a great movie when you just need to veg out, or if you feel stupid and worthless and are desperate to see someone more stupid and worthless than you feel. If you ever enjoyed watching Beavis & Butthead on MTV and you never saw this movie, then you must live in a cave. Beavis & Butthead wind up traveling all across America as they try to hunt down who stole their most prized possession...their TV. As they wander around town looking for a TV to watch, they happen upon a seedy motel where they meet Muddy, an alcoholic who just happens to be waiting for 2 guys to meet him about "doing" his wife. Muddy is too drunk to notice or care that Beavis & Butthead are a little young for the job, all the while they think "doing" Muddy's wife implies sex not murdering her. Muddy sends them to Vegas to off his wife, but when they get there, she finds out their plan and plays on their naiveity (or should I say stupidity) to get them to head across country on a bus to Washington, DC. But unknown to Beavis & Butthead, she has sewn a unit containing a dangerous virus inside it into Beavis' shorts, and now the whole country is on the lookout for the 2 "most dangerous" criminals in America. It's great fun from beginning to end and certainly something you'll enjoy over and over again, that is, if you were a fan in the first place. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is just great!
I already own this movie, its great! But now were getting commentary, and special features. I think this is gonna be a great part of the Beavis and Butt-Head collection! Who know, mabe it will be a wast of money? But wait we forgot its Beavis and Butt-Head! Dont have much to say but this collection wont suck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Treatise on Black Gay Desire & Impressionistic Cinema
In mainstream gay cinema, the images of the black gay man is somewhat controversial and contrived.Often, he is portrayed as the overly effete stereotype. For the sake of the dollar and to appeal to cross-cultural fetishistic interest to reach a wider audience, he is often shown preferring and seeking out the attentions of white gay men.Writer-director Isaac Julien's LOOKING FOR LANGSTON represents a departure from the status quo of the image of black gay men while also attempting to reclaim the black gay identity and history that only now is beginning to be widely acknowledged by the general black community.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and equisite poetry in motion!
I first saw this film and have been entranced by it ever since- i can't explain it- it was like the first time I ever swam. The film is made so beautifully- it worships the contibution the poet Langston Hughes made on this earth- and also lends itself to celebrating the strength that other gay men- and, hell, anyone on the outer- should feel and be thankful for. Triumph of belief and passion over misguided energy and vanity. This film worships risk-takers, underdogs and worships the gentle strength in the human male (so rarely explored) and seems to celebrate our connection to nature in a very vividand timless way. As a confused aggressive gay man at 18 year old- i saw this film and felt like there was someone else on this earth who spoke my langauge and said- hey you! you're not alone- do what you want to do so passionately and be proud of what it is that you have to say, you have a right to be here. So feel free and be yourself- the world needs to hear what it is you feel. God bless the man that made this film- it tickles my soul. Thanks to my sweet Ma - thanks to her i am finally going to own this gem after 10 years of searching!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant counter-history
Julien seeks to mine the archive of the Harlem Renaissance for what has been lost or forgotten, namely the role of gay black men--writers, visual artists, and singers--in official history. More than this, however, this film moves backward and forward in time, an homage to black gay men today and the dangers they face and have faced in U.S. history. The final coup of the film is that it is not about Langston Hughes but rather uses Hughes as an icon for the ineffability of identity itself--was Hughes gay or straight?Julien refuses to answer the question, refuses spectacle and surveillance as means of "spotting" identity.Julien's filmic language is also beautiful and subversive and he alters written texts, such as Bruce Nugent's Smoke, Lilies, and Jade (Nugent is now known as the first "out" African American writer) to fit his own political project.I have written an article on this film, 35 pages, forthcoming from VU University Press, Amsterdam, 2002, copyrighted, and think most reviews of the film are idiotic or simply do not understand the beauty and complexity of this very alternative film. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A DVD question about "This Boy's Life"
I have a friend who "rented" his 57 chevy to the production crew. He was even filmed (looking under the 57 hood) for a scene in Northern Utah that was trimmed from the theatrical release. He asked if there are any "deleted scenes" included in the DVD. I tried to ask over at IMDB, but you have to enter at least two hundred words about the film, or the site won't even accept your post. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great historical flick
This is an awesome movie that accurately describes the struggles of the black students that integrated the all white Central High School in Arkansas. It details what they went through every day, not only in school but out of school.this is a movie about courageous kids that fought for an equal education. This is a film for the whole family, for the history lover, or for anyone that wants to see a good movie.I highly recommend this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent film!
This is a wonderful film that was based on the real life journal teacher Elizabeth Huckaby kept during the 1957 integration that took place at a Little Rock high school. This is an intense and gripping drama that stars the talented Joanne Woodward along with Charles Durning, Henderson Forsythe and William Russ. Be sure to see this film!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Heartwarming
Like the other reviewers, I must say this is one FUN old movie. It is a throw back to the early 60's -Between the Las Vegas setting and Disneyland settings...who could resist. And the cast has so many wonderful character actors. This is a definite win!Where is the DVD????

5-0 out of 5 stars 40 pounds of F U N !!!!!
This film reminds me of my first trip to Disneyland (1963) on my way to Viet-Nam. I'm a retired G.I. and this movie says so much about a time in the past. Tony, Suzanne, Phil, & Larry (Storch) should all have received Oscars for their performance in this hilarious romp thru this most appealing fun center (Disneyland). It's with a very sad feeling of regret that the Casino where this film was shot is now gone. (Stateline) My Wife and I visited the spot a couple of years ago. I have an old VHS copy of this funny, funny film and I watch it with much happiness, but I'm afraid it is getting worn out. They (producers) should make this film available on D V D !!!!! Nuf Said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful
When I saw this movie had not been reviewed I just couldn't resist. This is a wonderful family flick for all ages and boasts a "who's who" list of very funny character actors from the 1960's.Tony Curtis is outrageously funny and charming as Steve McClusky, a Nevada casino manager who winds up caring for Penny, a 5 year old orphan with amusing results.Suzanne Pleshette as a romantic endeavor never looked better. And Phil Silvers' portrayal as the loveable tough guy Uncle Bernie can't be topped. The "chase" scene thru Disneyland is pure fun. This movie truly is a family classic! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still great fun due to the Poitier-Steiger pairing...
The racism in this film may be a bit dated now, even in the deep south, where blacks holding high positions in police work is no longer a novelty. The movie, however, still holds my attention when I find it on television, although I must have seen it 20 times since its first release. I like Steiger's work best, but Sidney is also at a high level here. The supporting cast is uniformly good as well. If you have never seen this, take a rental and enjoy yourself. The film's success eventually led to a multi-season TV series starring Carroll O'Connor, and that had some good moments, too, but never equalled the big screen version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage classic 60's film on racial tensions with superb acting.
In The Heat Of The Night (1967) Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier team up in study of racial politics in a sleepy Southern town. Steiger won an Oscar as the prejudiced lawman who begins to question his own motives after being outclassed by Poitier during a difficult murder investigation. Watch closely when Steiger evolves from a racist bigot (which he never really was, deep in his heart) to a man who trusts a "colored" enough to pour out his alcoholic-soiled soul to Tibbs, this is the heart-cliching scene which nabbed Steiger the Golden Prize.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great performance! Don't overlook it.
I can't commend this highly enough.I saw it on the local Public Television station here in Chicago when it was first broadcast in the early 1970s, and it made a tremendous impact on me.This play, and the very similar "Awake and Sing," are depression era dramas written by Clifford Odets and originally produced for the stage in the mid 1930s, when they were the cutting edge of contemporary theatre and dealt with contemporary issues. These new DVDs contain television productions done with top-notch casts in the early 1970s.I found them unforgettable, and am delighted to be able to savor them again after 30-plus years. They're just as good as I remember.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars How Green Is Your Grinch?
I was quite disheartened when I purchased the previous DVD release of How the Grinch Stole Christmas to find a yellowish grinch in the video transfer. It is most certainly my intention to purchase the upcoming release in the hopes that this problem has been corrected but what exactly is the story on the contents of this release. Are we supposed to believe that this is a 26 minute running time release with no other contents on 2 DVDs? What exactly are we getting here and what is the growing problem among manufacturers who remain tight-lipped about product content prior to the release date?
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Grinch movie you want to see
This is the original animated film. Awesome. Loved every minute of it as if I were 8 again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Family Classic
I recently purchased the DVD of Dr. Seuss - How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is the third generation in my family to derive such enjoyment from the ORIGINAL Dr. Seuss classic. I watched and loved it as a child, my two daughters watched and felt the same way growing up. And now my Grandson, who loves most, but not all Dr. Seuss stories, LOVES watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It is not only a family classic, but a timeless classic. And it's truly enhanced that it teaches a very valuable lesson as to the true meaning of Christmas, as well. ... Read more
