2-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
This DVD is often amusing, but completely unsuitable for children learning to read. Words are all but incomprehensible in many of the songs, and some charaters don't articulate the words as well as you would expect (don't get me started on Elmo). It's also too long.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Hold My Twin's Interest, For Some Reason
We've owned this DVD for about a year now and for some reason, my 2 year old twins have never been and still are not interested in it.They LOVE Ernie & Bert, but it just doesn't hold their interest.Still, we keep trying to reintroduce it.Perhaps it is specific to them, but they do absolutely love "Learning About Letters" and "The Best of Elmo".I would check those out if you are looking for excellent Sesame Street videos. Both of them have a lot of songs, which holds the interest of most toddlers.Perhaps my girls will love the Word Play video in 6 months or a year. We'll keep trying, but it just isn't a hit, for some reason. It is the only video we own that they have no interest in.That being said, Sesame Street is one of the best programs for little ones, so you might want to still give it a try.Looks like it is a hit with a lot of others out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you want old-time sesame street, this isn't it
I bought this tape after reading the reviews.I am looking for Sesame Street videos that are good for our daughter but also will keep our attention, since we always sit down with her to watch. We are big Muppet Show fans and also grew up with Sesame Street.I was not getting this tape to teach my 18-month-old to read, but some educational content is desirable. If you are expecting something like the Muppet Show, you will be disappointed, although the bits with Prairie Dawn and Benny Rabbit begin to approach it.The rest was rather flat, although I will admit my expectations were high for this video. There are only two "old" sketches, and the "fat cat sat on the mat" with Mahna Mahna and three other muppets is marred by the addition of flashy animated words that are not well-timed to match what's being said on the screen. It doesn't bother me that the words "taught" in this video are so random, "sticky" and "slippery" with "I" and "at" and "go;" the lack of entertainment value for adults is the bigger flaw in my estimation, as is the absence of more excellent older sketches from Sesame Street.Muppet Show fans, do yourselves a favor and get some of the 45 available episodes of the original Muppet Show. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars favorite
this was the first sesame street video i bought for my 18month old, and she is totally in love with it. her favorite is "who are the insects in your neighborhood" and she now buzzes like a bee every time she sees one. she's never been into the "new" sesame street, so for those who like classic skits/videos, this video has it. and the short length of time of the video is perfect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great video...
Especially if you love 'Gladys The Cow' (one of my favourite muppets). She was hilarious on this video. The problem was that there weren't enough Muppet songs. there was some, but the others just showed real animals. they could have shown some more Gladys songs or maybe even some songs Kermit The Frog or that Animal Orchestra featuring Placido Flamingo and Seiji Ozawa

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Sesame Street animal numbers
This is my very, very favorite Sesame Street video, because it contains the clips I love best; the live-animal clips with goofy songs like "I'm a working dog," "I'm an aardvark," "Which came first, the chicken or the egg," and "I love being a pig." It also includes muppet classics like "We are all earthlings," and, my personal favorite, "Baa Baa Bamba." It's a half hour of shoe-tapping, hand-clapping fun - my toddler and I both love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mangled but not totally destroyed
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars We's all from Tennessee....
This movie is a real gem and John Huston does a remarkable job in creating a fairly realistic looking Civil War environment. You won't find any overweight re-enactors aiming their rifles at the sky and not showing any signs of fear. No this movie provides actors and men like Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin, who knew well what real war was all about. The battle scenes are quite good for the period in which they were filmed and certainly have a more realistic feel than some of the battle scenes depicted in more recent Civil War "epics".

1-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE HISTORICAL IRONY OF IRISH RICHARD HARRIS AS CROMWELL
how Irishman Harris could have so gloriously portrayed Cromwell, who initiated the total destruction of the Irish nation, people, language, religion and culture is beyond comprehension, unless he purposefully portrayed him over the top in a guerrilla effort to sabotage this hero-making of a vile and brutal dictator.
2-0 out of 5 stars misbegotten history & a misbegotten star
this went up from one * in tribute to the neat hammy acting job from alec guiness as charles II, but otherwise its just a mess. the film called out for a screenplay by a robert bolt or a john prebble, but instead it was penned by its director kenneth hughes, who also gave us such film masterpieces as "casino royale" and "chitty chitty bang bang". richard harris is his usually unrestrained self, and thats not a compliment. now, i wont even go into the politics, which attempt to portray oliver cromwell as some sort of liberating hero: as ridiculous a take on the english civil wars as alexandre dumas's paean to charles II in "twenty years after", but nowhere near as entertaining.

1-0 out of 5 stars SO PITIFUL THAT I FEEL BAD PICKING ON IT
It befuddles me how this film got an average of four stars. CROMWELL is an awful film. It is so pitiful that I feel bad picking on it but someone must speak up and tell the truth about this movie. Good acting talent (Richard Harris and Alec Guiness) is wasted on the worst possible screenplay. I think I could have written a better screenplay as could have the the bag boy at your favorite supermarket. And the history? If this was being shown to school kids in England, it's no wonder the country is socialist. I have read C.V. WEDGEWOOD'S three-volume work on the English Civil War twice so I know something about that conflict. In CROMWELL, the facts are over-simplified to the point of absudity. Charles I is portrayed as a stuttering namby-pampy bullied by his Catholic wife. Oliver Cromwell is shown as a righteous advocate for "democracy". The Cavaliers are thugs and greedy, oppressive rich; the Puritans are shown as innocent, hard-working farmers. You can see who our heros are in CROMWELL. In reality, both sides claimed the support of noblemen, craftsmen, laborers, farmers and townsmen. Also, the puritans saw pleasure and luxury as sinful and probably would have liked to impose their strict, black-and-white lifestyle on all of England. CROMWELL would have been much more interesting and truly educational if it had opted to present a balanced view of both sides. Beyond that, the characters are paper-thin and the dialogue painful. The costumes and sets seem pretty good so, for that, I'll give CROMWELL one star. Stay away from this one. Read WEDGEWOOD instead. ... Read more

This is a lovely life-affirming movie. It has everything: lovely screnery, poetry and great characters who are at once vulnerable, intelligent and courageous. It is the story of love between a husband and wife, and the dedication of a doctor to his patients under difficult circumstances. There is a triumph of goodness here that makes this movie very special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop being so picky
I'm disliking all the bad press that the second half of this tape is getting. Personally, it's one of my favorites along with two others which have not been released on tape.4-0 out of 5 stars Great first half, strange second half
The first half of this video is great, it starts out with an amusing instance of mistaken identity, as two Austrian princes, who are also French lieutenants, mistake Indy for a delivery boy because he's riding a bike and his uniform is covered up by his coat. They run him off the road with their car, and are later shocked to learn that he's not only not a delivery boy, but that he's a captain, outranking them.Indy, still insulted, isn't impressed to then learn that they are royalty. This doesn't get the relationship off to a very good start, and so of course Indy is assigned to escort them across the border to Austria.4-0 out of 5 stars Confusing plot, but on the whole a good movie

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, Entertaining, and Well-Acted
Six years after Humphrey Bogart made "Casablanca" he starred in yet another classic film, quite different from the aforementioned film. The classic film I'm referring to is, of course, this one..."The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" which is a portrait of greed disguised as a treasure-hunter film. When we meet Dobbs (Bogart), he's trying to scrounge up enough money to get out of Mexico. When we meet him, he's basically a beggar. One man he asks for money from instead offers him a job; While working on the job he meets Curtin (Tim Holt) and the two become fast friends. After they're employer neglects to pay them, they're left staying at a crappy...Well, I'd call it a motel but that term would be inaccurate. While trying to sleep, they overhear an old man named Howard (Walter Huston) explaining that people are tempted by gold. If you start off wanting one amount, once you get there you'll want more. Dobbs and Curtin tell the man that they are capable of resisting temptation and pretty soon the three men are in the mountains prospecting for gold. As they hide from bandits and suspicious gold-seekers, Dobbs slowly slips into madness. The film is a study of a subject, but as a character study we watch Dobbs as he gives into temptation (greed) and therefore, reaches his demise. This film only proved that Bogart is one of the finest actors in the world; You truly believe the way he acts. Even though you won't find many people prospecting for gold today, the subject matter and the way it's handled are just as relevant today. Besides Bogart though, Huston and Holt are especially outstanding. Especially Huston, who by today's standards, delivers a performance that could be called "campy" but it works perfectly. Most people don't know this, but this film contains one of the most famous quotes in movie history. "Badges? We don't need to show you no stinking badges." The movie's got a great script; It's funny and entertaining and definitely smart. The acting is superb. At #30 on The American Film Institute's Top 100 and winner of three Academy Awards, you can't go wrong with this film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Way ahead of its time, this is one heck of a Huston double-punch!
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) I'm not a huge fan of Humphrey Bogart's work, except for this classic John Huston production which won Oscars for both John and his dad Walter Huston as the grizzled and wise old prospector, Howard. Former cowboy star Tim Holt provides solid support for both men. Notable for Huston's use of Mexican actors, who speak (and carry) the film in their own language with no subtitles whatsoever. A true rarity for its age and a film way ahead of its time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good movie
The movie was terrific, and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, was because there was quite a bit of Spanish in the film, and the subtites from Spanish to English didn't seem to work on my copy. English subtitles appeared for Engliish, and Spanish subtitles appeared when they spoke Spanish!Strange.Fortunately I know some Spanish, so i could sort of pick it up, but I don't know why the sub titles didn't work. Anyway,Bogie was very good and the story was too.Three men set out to find gold, and naturally greed and suspicion overtake one of them complicating the whole journey.Besides all that were the usual bandits and Indians and so forth. But it kept you watching and that's what really counts.Won't tell you if they got any gold! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 5 star entertainment, 2 star history
I think this film is great for its entertainment value.Jeff Daniels puts forth an excellent performance as General Washington, and the direction and editing do an excellent job of building suspense during the crossing of the Delaware River.Even though I knew the outcome, I found myself concerned about the ultimate success of the mission. That being said, the portrayal of Henry Knox does a diservice to the father of American artillery. While John Glover and his men did yeomens'work during the crossing, Knox commanded the operation. It was through his efforts as a leader, working in concert with Glover, that the Americans succeeded in their task. The movie disparages his achievement for comedic effect.Overall, I recommend this film, but watch it after reading David Hackett Fischer's "Washington's Crossing" or David McCullough's "1776".

5-0 out of 5 stars "In the end, sir, we all kill for profit"
Unlike The Patriot which was purely made for propaganda purposes, The Crossing, follows a much more pragmatic, realistic, and in effect a more truthful account of events during the American War of Independence (1775-1783).The film brings to the screen George Washington's first victory during the American Revolution: The Battle of Trenton. 5-0 out of 5 stars history well done
quite an excellent view of Washington's crossing coupled with the historical context which showed the importance of winning the early morning battle. Jeff Daniels is excellent as Washington showing both the restraint and natural charisma of the man. Hamilton is a bit overstated but so was the man himself. This was history well done-factual, fast-paced, and entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Huston + Melville
The best recreation nowadays of the immortal Melville's novel was put in images by John Huston who wrote too the script in inspirated collaboration with the great science-fiction story-teller Ray Bradbury. Although we're talking of a condensed adaptation ( the book is full of historical reviews, philosophical arguments and includes a list of book quotations concerning whales and several appendixes about cethology ) Huston touchs the essence and all the high moments of this tremendous story plenty of biblic's resonances about an obsessive man who has soldhis soul in his anxiety of hunting the whale Moby Dick, a white Leviathan, probably a symbol of his irrational and obstinate hope of revenge or maybe a number of our indifferent and cruel universe. Orson Welles, who had told several times his wish of shooting this unforgettable story, appears brevely as the father Marple at the beginning of the film. The experimental colour treatment of its images collaborates to the haunted tone that cross over all the film.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poor whales
It is very rare that a movie can equal or surpass a book. The only instance I can think of is Contact, the movie based on the book by Carl Sagan. That is because the movie is very well done and the book, written by a scientist rather than a novelist, has some extremely big weaknesses. An amateur really can't write a novel.Babe Ruth couldn't necessarily play basketball, and Carl Sagan is no novelist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Spirit of Moby Dick
The great film Moby Dick is based on a great book by the same name written by Herman Melville. In the book, which is about 600 pages long, you get about 200 pages of actual story insterspersed in the total volume, the remainder being observations on every aspect of whaling of that time. The movie omits those vast stretches of observations and concentrates both on the story and on the spirit of the story. At this it excels. One feels the pain of the families watching their loved ones depart. The sermon on Jonah is powerful and moving. One wonders at the madness in Ahab's dark ranting. One sees the brotherhood of Queequeg and Ishmael. But beware about watching the movie to take a test or make a report on the book. Some things are changed from the book (i.e. whose body is affixed to the whale.)But make no mistake, this is a great movie. ... Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Americanization of Emily
A brilliant and moving film. The actors are superb and the chemistry between Julie Andrews and James Garner is totally believable. This is one of the most literate films you are likely to encounter. Perhaps for some people's taste and the minimal-length dialogue standards of today's films it is too loaded with talk. But for those of us who like to listen to attractive articulate people convey their passionate points of view it is a delight. It is strong on intelligence and irony and does a great job of portraying England on the eve of the Normandy invasion. It is a film about the senselessness of heroic posturingand is especially pertinent now in view of the recent follies and fiascoes of military action.

5-0 out of 5 stars james garner is the most underrated american film actor
arthur hiller directed this great movie while a young man, and never came near it again. this is julie andrews's actual first movie (pre-poppins) and remains her favorite, as well as the favorite of its star, the always undervalued james garner. he stars here as a procurer (read black marketeer and pimp) for military brass in the european theater in the days leading up to d-day. thru a bizarre set of circumstances, this professional coward becomes the first sailor killed on omaha beach -- a lionization leading to dismay when he shows up alive a week later. (as an aside, i especially enjoyed this tack, having had a high school teacher back in 1971 whose ship having been blown up in pearl harbor had been the first citizen of nashville tennessee to be killed in ww2 -- only to emerge weeks later, to the consternation of his family who had been voted a generous pension by the city fathers, who had to cancel the statue that had been ordered.) contrary to what many believed at the time, this movie is not anti-war; it is anti-glorification of war. it is fully cognizant of the need to fight at times, while refusing to acknowledge that there is any nobility in it. a great script by paddy chayefsky, and great acting by the stars and supporting players melvyn douglas, james coburn, and joyce grenfell.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Julie in Her Movie Debut
Charlie Madison (James Garner) is the king of the black market. He is the attach for a Navy Admiral and his main job is to see that the Admiral and his cohorts are well taken care of.Emily Barham (Julie Andrews) is a war widow who works with the military as a driver. She is no nonsense and refuses to take advantage of her position. But they fall in love anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars A terrific "B" film noir

5-0 out of 5 stars Rest easy after I Wake Up Screaming (recommended)
From the title, it would appear that I WAKE UP SCREAMING is a 1941 thriller with blood curdling scenes to keep you awake at night. Actually, this is a noir mystery -- a whodunit. The title overstates the action which is still quite good -- just not frightening.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I'll follow you into your grave. I'll write my name on your tombstone"
The 1941 film I Wake Up Screaming reportedly set the standard for this type of noir thriller and the good news is that it gets everything right. Incorporating a perfect blend of noir elements and emphasizing the flashback story, the atmospheric lighting, and, most of all, the inherent moral ambiguities of the main protagonists, I Wake Up Screaming is a riveting suspense thriller from beginning to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe on Blue-Ray?
It's been many years since I have seen this movie, and I have been waiting along time to see it again. I first rented it way back, because Jennifer Connelly was in it, but it actually turned out to be a very nice story anyway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Robert Redford's Last Stand?
Some reviewers are going way over the top. But I agree that it's a good movie, and because of the last 20 minutes, a very good movie. The voiceover detracts more than it helps the chemistry of the movie, but that's nit-picking. A DVD would be nice, and (I know the purists may lynch me) a remake might be a cool idea. I read that this wasn't released in the U.S. because producer Robert Redford wouldn't compromise the integrity of the film by cutting a frontal nude scene by the lead (male) character. If that's true, I don't see the big deal (pun not intended). Cut the scene and move on - it's not essential to the story one litte bit (pun intended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning and sweet film about romantic love
I first encountered this film late one night on a cable channel.I wish I could have experienced it in a theatre.I am not a big fan of Patrick Dempsey, but I found this to be the best film he has been a part of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hail hail the gang' sstill here.
Fresh from the triumph of The Maltese Falcon, most of the principals plunged right into Across the Pacific. You have Sidney Greenstreet, still at the top of his game playing the same type of sinister character, shades of difference. Mary Astor looks great as a bad girl/good girl. Then there's Bogie of course & director John Houston who got drafted & didn't quite finish"Pacific". The cheesy sets, one woman character & script writing as you go, indicates this was a rush job done on the cheap. It tried capitalize on Pearl Harbor hysteria & goose The Maltese Falcon audience. But I found "Pacific" to be a better movie. Maybe better isn't the right word. I liked it a lot more. Maybe it was the subject matter. War & rumors of war vsmurder & a stupid bird statue. Fine movies both. These were warm-ups toBogart's classic, Casablanca.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bogart takes down a Japanese plot in WW II

4-0 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED GEM
The story is corny, the acting is good and the sets are right out of the sound stages at Warners. What makes this movie special is the interaction between Bogart and Mary Astor. The dialogue between the two is crisp and realistic. Astor gives a much better performance than in The Maltese Falcon. Both Bogart and Astor are relaxed and comfortable with their characters. This movie fan finds himself watching this one more than Falcon. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Tom Hanks's debut as a writer and director is a lively, affectionate account of the shooting-star career of a forgotten (fictional) '60s pop-rock band called The Wonders--as in "one-hit wonders." Hanks plays the manager of the group, which includes drummer Guy "Sticks" Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) who works the floor at his parents' appliance store in Erie, Pennsylvania; Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), the talented and temperamental lead singer and songwriter; Lenny (Steve Zahn), the goofy guitarist; and Ethan Embry as a geeky little fellow identified in the cast list only as "The Bass Player." The movie traces their meteoric rise and fall, from cutting their first record, to going on tour with a Phil Spector/Motown-type revue, to the internal tensions that lead to the band's disintegration, which comes when they fail to follow up their smash hit single, "That Thing You Do!" And that song, by the way, is so catchy it would definitely have been a hit in 1964--and deserves to be one today. This delightful movie would make a great double-bill with Allison Anders's wonderful Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hideous! 1 star only because there is no lower choice available
This film is so god-awful it makes me sweat with embarassment for my limited participation in enabling its existence by having seen it. TTYD might be an OK film to someone born after the era which Tom Hanks attempts to convey here through cliché and outright quasi-Beatloid parody, but there are films aplenty from the 1960's that pretty much tell the same stale "unknowns-make-it-big" saga with far more authenticity and sincerity, simply by having been made during that time. Not even as believable as a film with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, nor as musically sophisticated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Movie If You're a Fan of Pop Music
I admit to really loving this movie.I read somewhere that Tom Hanks came up with the idea for the script after watching a Beatles documentary.Based on the timing of its mid-90's release, I'm certain it was the Anthology series - which aired in that period on ABC television.Being a huge Beatles fan - and having almost worn out my Anthology DVD set - you can s
