5-0 out of 5 stars These women were important and deserve to have their voices heard.
I have never seen a show like this, and know that I never will.In times of war, women are often forgotten; the invisible support pushed out of the limelight by the action-packed experience of combat soldiers.China Beach tried to change that.It portrayed women in various different capacities during the Vietnam war.Nurses, prostitutes, Red Cross workers, enlisted women, officers, reporters, performers...China Beach gave them faces, histories, futures, pain, and joy.The show had an arc; it showed what happened to non-combatants both in country and back in the world after their tours.Women are often forgotten, but China BEach made that impossible.Go to the Women's monument at the Wall in DC and try not to superimpose the face of Dana Delaney onto any of those nurses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool movie!
We loved this movie, I only wish Netflix would get it so we could rent it and see it again. Cool story about a beautiful young woman whose parents are supervisors in hell. She becomes curious about what earth is like, so she ascends to see. But then these bad guys gotta pick on her and....heh heh.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Ascent
A movie using the best special affects at the time thought getting very simple by todays level of technology. There is an underlaying message that good and evil do exist. The main actor is the daughter of eviland she has rebelled from her parents ways, especially her fathers. So she and her beasty(Hellraiser) enters the world of mortal beings where they meet a young doctor. She is kind and gently to those who are good at heart. But quick and ruthless to punish and send straight to hell, those which do wrong unto others. She is really good by vertue and deed but beware all who sin!

4-0 out of 5 stars The final fate of Special FBI Agent Dale Cooper and the folks of Twin Peaks
With this final set of episodes the cult classic television series "Twin Peaks" comes to an end. It is not so much that these are bad episodes per se, but given the high standard David Lynch and company created during the best moments of the first season, they all suffer in comparison. Plus, the final scene is the textbook example of adding insult to injury for a fans dealing with the cancellation of the series:
4-0 out of 5 stars A couple of average episodes lead up to the most chilling hour of television ever.
After it was revealed who killed Laura Palmer the series didn't seem to have any clear direction. This may be one of the things that led to the show's decline and cancellation and if that wasn't bad enough David Lynch ends the series with the most nightmarish episode ever leaving fans choking on their damn fine cups of coffee. The next to last episode ends with an eerie strobelit confrontation but it's the last episode itself that delivers the real chills.Agent Coopers journey into the mysterious otherworldly Red Lodge is supremely creepy.Beginning with the hypnotic song Under the Sycamore Trees(Which you can find on the Twin Peaks:Fire Walk With Me soundtrack)to agent Cooper being pursued from room to room by his evil dopelganger.Masterfully directed by David Lynch it's equal to any of his best creepy movies like Lost Highway.Like being woken up in a middle of a nightmare it will leave you hanging but will stay in your mind forever.I don't remember T.V. shows I've seen last night but the final episode of Twin Peaks still haunts me 15 years later.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOULD YOU LIKE SOME COFFEE?
This image of the Red Room, this world of Twin peaks is horrifying!! I must admit I cried for hours after the ending of this show. I was extremely depressed, I still get depressed about and the first time I watched it was in January 2000. I really love this tape. I love TWIN PEAKS. It needs more to it. I want Lynch to direct another TWIN PEAKS movie!! I want MORE!!! PEAKS IN MY MIND HASN'T DIED. FRANKLY, I see Peaks still around, in a spooky world!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable Cartland telemovie
Filmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland.DUEL OF HEARTS is the story of Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody), who literally stumbles across the path of handsome Lord Vane Brecon (Benedict Taylor).Vane, who has been wrongfully accused of murder, hides a shameful family secret.Caroline, under the alias of Miss Fry, decides to enter the employ of his household in order to help him.A fascinating tale, filled with Cartland's always-enjoyable and potent mix of romance and heart-pounding adventure. The cast also includes Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Virginia McKenna, Billie Whitelaw, Beryl Reid, Adalberto Maria Merli, Suzanna Hamilton and Margaret Mazzantini.

5-0 out of 5 stars Male critics are for the birds.
I will never know why they choose a male critic to review the historical romance movies that we women love. Over 50% of books sold are romance, and still they don't get it, I have watched the TNT movies several times, and wish that they would make some new ones, they take us away from everyday life where we can fanasize about a handsome hero & heroine who are not involved in car chases and beating each other up every 5 mins. Time to get Marcus Gilbert from Hazard of Hearts & A Ghost in Monte Carlo, back to work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Key to Rebecca
I thought the TV version did not do justice to the book nor to the development of the characters. The producers should have stuck to the book.Cliff Roberton was very good and so was Season Hubley although her character in the book is much more interesting and complex.

4-0 out of 5 stars So where is the DVD release?
I've been waiting and waiting.I really want to get the DVD, 'cause I've already replaced too many tapes that have been worn out or eaten by by VHS machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars A made for TV movie that is close to the book
If you have seen "Eye of the Needle" (1981), then you will probably like this movie as they are both good adaptations of Ken Follett Novels. However this one was a mini series on TV so there was not as much thought put in to it as if it were a made for theater movie. However the film was made in Tunisia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Noir-esque cold-case thriller.
Jimmy Stewart and Lee J. Cobb star in this noir-esque cold-case thriller.Stewart plays the hard-nosed big-city reporter in 1942 who is assigned to investigate a cop-killer case from 1932.Stewart becomes involved in the case when he reports on the sad story of the old lady who scrubs floors for a living and saves every dime to get her convict son out of prison. The story is very popular with the news-paper reading public, so Stewart is assigned to investigate the case.Stewart cynically follows the leads, believing that the convict is guilty but following the human interest angle.Ultimately he becomes convinced of his subject's innocence and Stewart is involved in race against the clock to get the falsely accused man out of prison.
5-0 out of 5 stars Answering the call at Northside 777
A really good film noir from Jimmy Stewart. It has a documentary style that may come off a little stilted today but is still a fine character piece. The film remains suspenseful until the end and has a "good" ending but not necessarily the "happy" ending. The climactic scene has a plot hole you can drive a truck through, but who cares?Jimmy Stewart is in great form as a cynical reporter. There is fine support coming from Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte. Its a tale of guilt and innocence in gangland Chicago.

4-0 out of 5 stars When Reporters Were the Good Guys
Jimmy Stewart plays a Chicago newspaper reporter. His editor is intrigued by a simple add in the paper. A reward of $5000 is offered for information on the murder of a policeman. The murder is over a decade old. A man has already been convicted of the murder and is serving a life sentence. What interest, the editor wants to know, would anybody have in an old murder? He assigns Jimmy Stewart to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodtimes
Stoners, music, girls. 80's High school times in Cali. It takes you back to when vans were cool and the girls had way to much hairspray. Everytime I watch this movie Im ready to hit the beach. Good movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A movie they would never make today!
This is a great film. But, sadly, it would never be made today. I mean, try to imagine a film in which a 15 or 16 year of character has an abortion and it is taken as just another plot point. (Compare this to Crowe's Singles which brought back the oh so convienent miscarriage, like something out of a 1940's movie.) Also, imagine a film begin made today which invests so much time in developing its characters. Yep, you can't. So enjoy it for what it is, a window on a lost world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Times indeed!
One of the classic high school movies, Fast Times spawned a slew of teenage talent on the big screen, but no one was more memorable in this movie than Sean Penn as Spicoli.Amy Heckerling cuts out a slice of Southern Californian life from a San Bernardino high school that shows both honor students and misfits alike. While the signature moments belonged to Spicoli, there were many other great scenes such as the ongoing burger war in which Judge Reinhold finds himself on the short end of the spatula.Meanwhile his little sis, a seemingly innocent Jennifer Jason Leigh, experiments with dating and sex with an amusing pair of misfits, Brian Backer and Robert Romanus.Phoebe Cates tries to set her young prodigy straight but to no avail.Forest Whitaker even has a significant moment in this movie as the bruising defensive lineman who takes out the destruction of his prized car on the opposing team.Little did he know that Spicoli had a hand in it.But, it is the hilarious relationship between Spicoli and Mr. Hand (Ray Walston) that steals the show.Fast Times may appear a bit dated, but it hasn't lost any of its humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please sir, I want some more
If you watch these videos in chronological order (which you should) this provides a fascinating follow up to the cute and funny Spring Break Adventure (even the more serious Mexico half featured jokes like the letter Indy wrote to his dad). The only problem is, that it shouldn't follow directly after like it does. There were two episodes, "Ireland, April 1916" and "London, May 1916" that were not put on video.Instead, we jump from what must be March (in Mexico) to "Somme, Early August 1916" and "Germany, Mid August 1916".One might ask why this was done.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - Best of the series
These are arguably the greatest episodes in the series. They are emotional, moving, action packed, and realistic. If there's a knock on the series it's that it's often hokey, and Indy runs into too many famous people. But this episode pulled no punches and delivered on all cylinders. It is so excellent, I rate it better than the last two Indiana Jones movies. 5-0 out of 5 stars A harrowing tale of the horrors of war
The 8th chapter in the Young Indiana Jones series, this is a dark and harrowing look at the horrors of war. The movie is divided into three parts:

I agree enthusiastically with all the reviews here. First of all, why it isn't on DVD is beyond me as well. This movie as a drama has it all! It moved me so much the first time I saw it that I went back to the theatre four times that week. When the soundtrack came out I bought it and would give that five stars as well. Why I think this tugs at the heart strings of all who see it is that it works on numerous emotional levels. It has: 1. A moving story, (adapted from John Galsworthy's story "The Apple Tree"); 2. Is gorgously filmed on location on the moors of southwest England; 3. Has a beautiful soundtrack by Georges Delerue that perfectly compliments the dramatic scenes as well as the landscape; 4. The acting is supurb with excellent performances by Imogen Stubbs (whose eyes will haunt you long after the movie), James Wilby and Susanna York. This movie will move you to tears and won't let your heart go. It still hasn't let mine go and it has been over fifteen years.

5-0 out of 5 stars My husband cries every time he sees SUMMER STORY
THIS MOVIE IS AMAZING AND I CANNOT BELIEVE IT ISN'T ON DVD. MY HUSBAND INTRODUCED ME TO IT AND I WAS SO TOUCHED NOT ONLY BY THE MOVIE BUT HIS REACTION TO IT. HE CRIED LIKE A BABY WHEN HE WATCHED IT WITH ME. I ASKED HIM HOW MANY TIMES HE HAD SEEN IT AND HE SAID AT LEAST 20 TIMES. FOR A MOVIE TO INVOKE THIS REACTION AFTER 20 TIMES TELLS YOU HOW AMAZING IT IS. WHEN YOU WATCH IT, WATCH IT WITH AN OPEN MIND AND TAKE YOURSELF TO THAT ERA OF TIME AND LET YOURSELF DELVE INTO THE EMOTIONS AND IF YOU HAVE ANY HEART YOU TO WILL BECOME INTERTWINED INTO THE MAGIC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even my "red-neck" husband couldn't tear his eyes away.
I rented this movie when I was in high school. After watching it, I racked up about $40 in late fees at the local video store because I pretended to lose it so I could keep it.I am glad I did because it's so hard to find now!!

3-0 out of 5 stars I would like to see this gven an improved release.
If this were released on a better disk with better special effects, this would very much be worth the price. Other than that, it is an okay buy, but it needs much improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen King, prognosticator
Extremely interesting tale which ultimately suggests an explanation as to why time travel to the past will never be realized. When a small group of airline travelers awaken to find their jetliner 40,000 feet in the air without a pilot and otherwise empty except for themselves, they come to the realization that they slipped a few minutes into the past. Now they have to find their way back to the present, for they have discovered the terrible truth of what really happens to the present when it becomes the past. Not the typical Stephen King story. But some interesting theory presented in the story line, extremely riveting with good role-playing by a diverse cast. Great entertainment.

Even people habitually hostile to John Wayne movies tend to cast an indulgent eye on this rumbustious comedy-Western--partly because the Alaska gold rush setting seems more exotic than, say, Texas or Arizona, and because there are no Indians to discriminate against and no macho gunplay to fret about. As for John Wayne as all-purpose icon of male chauvinism, Big Sam McCord (the Duke) spends much of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Northto Alaska 1960
This rousing comedy-adventure set in the Alaskan gold rush finds buddies Sam (John Wayne 1907-1979) and George (Stewart Granger 1913-1993) hitting the mother lode in Nome . George then asks Sam to fetch his sweatheart Jennie in Seatle . But when sam discovers that she has married someone else he concocts a plan to bring George a new love , inviting a beautiful dancer (Capucine 1931-1990) to be Jennies replacement . Even though "North To Alaska" is a rousing western , it was a dramatic change for John Wayne as an actor . More famous for throwing punches than punch lines , he was given a change to also show his lighter side and play for laughs . Made on place In Alska and Washington .Razor sharp transfer and a movie your keep for many years . Higly Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars North to Alaska
this is one of John wayne's ventures into comedy. The movie is based on Johnny Horton's song where Sam McCord and George Pratt go to Alaska during the gold rush and strike it rich, while George pines away for his Sweet Jenny. That's where the similarity ends. In the movie, Sam, played by John Wayne, goes back to Seattle to bring Jenny back, while George, and Brother Billy, remain behind to build a honeymoon home for Jenny. Sam arrives at Seattle only to find Jenny married to another man.Sam has a few drinks and convinces a saloon showgirl to go back with him, as a bride for George. Then the fun begins.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My family hated this movie; in fact, they hated it so much it has become an in-joke.Apparently stating this in my review has gotten me several "not helpful" votes, but I bought the DVD based on all the positive reviews, and I think prospective buyers should be warned that not everyone finds this a 5-star movie. It has not aged well. There are some John Wayne movies that are among our all-time favorites (McClintock, the Quiet Man), and I was really looking forward to this one, especially since we had just been to Alaska. However, the story was uninteresting, the direction was uneven, the comedy (mostly bar fights) felt forced and awkward and the movie never "gelled".Stewart Granger did not seem to know what he was doing or why his character was there.Fabian's acting was unmemorable and we felt Capucine was miscast. We got bored and spent half the movie pointing out to each other how little the sandy beaches and desert terrain looked anything like Alaska (it was obviously shot in southern California).I gave it two stars because I was able to sit through the entire thing, but I spent most of it asking myself "why? Why am I wasting my time like this?" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique magical adventure
While at Camelot the knights are jousting for the appreciation of the beautiful Princess Ilene (Katherine Heigl), viking raiders led by Thagnar (Thomas Kretschman), disguised as Scotsmen, storm the round table room and steal Excalibur. Together with Merlin's spellbook, which the witch Morgane Le Fey (Joanna Lumley) exhumed from the wizard's grave, Excalibur should allow Thagnar's brother Sligon (Udo Kier) to reign over Camelot supreme. Meanwhile King Arthur (Edward Fox), mistakenly worried that an attack by Scotland would be imminent, entrusts the unknown squire Valiant (Stephen Moyer) with the task of escorting Princess Ilene to safety, and an incredible adventure is about to begin .... Comic strips at the scene transitions remind of the origins of the story of "Prince Valiant" who was invented by Harold R. Foster in 1937. This is the most touching, lovingly and lively produced version of this theme, proving a fine sense of humor, which is greatly due to the original skript of Michael Frost Beckner and the efforts of director Anthony Hickox as well as the fresh, tough, moving and extraordinarily charming performance of as always enchanting Stephen Moyer. A further highlight underlining the surrealistic character of the film is the playful, half futuristic half historic-folcloristic soundtrack composed by David Bergeaud and performed by the Munich Symphony Orchestra.

3-0 out of 5 stars For the ten year old Knight.
Villainy, jousting, swordplay, a princess in peril, an unknowing prince on a quest, and all in the shadow of Excalibur: what more could the average ten year old would-be Knight ask for?
4-0 out of 5 stars B Movieness At Its Finest
It often seems that the genre of the B movie is a lost art in this age of CGI and massively budgeted films. Yet out of the digital free for all comes Prince Valiant, a movie which harkens back to movies like Excalibur in its style and never takes itself seriously in its substance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the War of the War of the Worlds
Now that three more War of the Worlds movies (that I know of) have been released within the past few years, one with a really big budget and set in New York (you've probably seen that one) and two low budget movies set back in Britain in the 1890's, this is still the best War of the Worlds movie out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned Sci-Fi Movie At Its Best
I sound like an old man when I say that there are movies back in the day that are better than the slickest modern production, even when the movies outdate ME.Maybe because today's filmmakers are so much in love with CGI effects that they feel they can replace little, unimportant things like plot, storyline and character development. That's why I've steadfastly refused to see Spielberg's version of this classic; I don't want anything to tarnish my memory of what I consider, as a kid growing up and today, one of the best sci-fi films ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 18th Century, 50's Style
This is one of my favorite movies.Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas are in thier prime, both sexy and studley. If they really had ministers like Lancaster, I'd never miss church. The story, adapted from a play is a bit stagey, but it's very enjoyable.I liked the black and white photography as well. The best part of this picture is Lawrence Olivier as General Burgoyne. He is just so fantastic. He steals every scene he's in and the wordplay between him and Kirk Douglas is really entertaining.5-0 out of 5 stars The 18th Century, 50's Style

I'm not a fan of G.B. Shaw (who was a blithering idiot in my book)and therefore I didn't have high expectations for this tripe. And I was right again. The sequences with the animated paper "puppets" was annoying from the start. Burt Lancaster, who plays the parish minister, sleep-walked through this whole mess. (The scene where he attempts to blow up a British powder wagon looked more like a Three Stooges routine) And everyone all stood around watching like a bunch of statues ? Give me a break!!! Only Burt could take on a handful of British soldiers, armed with muskets and bayonets and defeat with a table! More horse sh** And Kirk Douglas should have stayed with Sparticus and left the 18th films alone. He was totally inappropriate for this part. His mannerisms and demeaner was a joke. The only saving grace was "Gentleman Johnny" as played by Sir Laurence Olivier, but even his acid wit couldn't save this load of horse sh**. The best line uttered during this whole nonsense was "History will tell us lies as usual" Like so many Hollywood productions, clothing, uniforms, etc. were all wrong. Don't waste your time, unless you enjoy self torture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Damned Good Movie
Reuniting the stars of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" Robert Redford and Paul Newman, "The Sting" went onto win 7 Oscars in 1973 including Best Picture. Watching it now, it's not hard to see why. It's really a great film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enduring fun in every respect, gets better with age...
Newman, Redford, Robert Shaw as the bad guy, twists and turns and wry humor every 20 frames or so...how can anyone not like "The Sting"? When I saw it on the big screen upon its first release, I did not think it deserved the Oscar as best film of its year, although I enjoyed it. Now, decades later, and after having seen it perhaps 20 times, at least in pieces, I think it one of the best achievements in movie-making in its century. It has STYLE, and a consistent sensibility, and logic, and on first viewing, it will keep you guessing as to who is going to come out on top. I can't imagine that anyone over 30 hasn't seen it yet, but if that's you, fix it as soon as possible. It is a primer in how to write, direct and act in a fairly long movie without ever boring the audience. Newman's drunken card-player on the train with Shaw is absolutely classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars too bad no one pulled such a sting on Saddam Hussein before he gassed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds to death
I saw this film (again after many years)just last night. I loved the Ray Walston mention of The Rockingham Race Track in Salem, NH which I used to actually see in person going up to Salem a lot. Also, the film's golf scene reminds of the one in the James Bond film Goldfinger (Robert Shaw, whose in this scene in The Sting, wasn't in Goldfinger as he was in the James Bond film From Russia With Love). It's a very good film overall with characters that are not that larger than life. Credible way how Redford alludes getting shot by Shaw's men for one. But I hate Saddam Hussein and the film made me wish someone in real life really had stung him right out of power before he committed his dreaded Anfal Campaign in the 1980's. At least Saddam was very rightfully taken out of powerin 2003. Thank God for Bush! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Repeated viewings can't dispel the shock of the final scene in this classic 1941 romantic mystery--a brief but disorienting confrontation that suddenly inverts the heroine's mounting conviction that she's married a murderer, forcing us to reconsider virtually every scene and line of dialogue that's preceded it. It's a masterful coup de grace for director Alfred Hitchcock, who has built a puzzle around the corrosive power of suspicion, threaded with deft ambiguities that toy with dramatic conventions and character archetypes in nearly every frame. 3-0 out of 5 stars If You're Going To Kill Someone, Do It Simply.
Based on Francis Illes' Before the Fact, Suspicion is Alfred Hitchcock's 1941 Academy Award-nominated film. It's likely that the picture will always remain a significant example of Hollywood's famous rewriting of novels. The original ending had a far darker conclusion, but seeing as good-guy Cary Grant was starring, studio execs would not allow Hitch to portray the leading man in such a negative light. Hitchcock never liked the ending he had to shoot, but many still hold the feature as an important piece in the director's canon.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cary Grant Meets Hitchcock
This is sort of a follow up to Rebecca.Joan Fontaine is still a demure woman who meets a man and blossoms but this time she is a wealthy demure woman.
