Editorial Review

The great John Ford directed this rousing 1937 adventure with such invigorating physicality that the movie is never compromised by its cornball plot. It's an island adventure from the old school of tall tales, and the title says it all--the tropical romance between native girl Dorothy Lamour and suntanned hunk Jon Hall is established simply so it can be tested by a meddlesome island governor (Raymond Massey) and a tropical storm that provides one of the most physically impressive climaxes ever filmed. The storm remains as awesome as ever simply because it triumphantly captures the power of nature in the throes of a raging tempest. Massive waves, driving wind, and expert use of miniatures make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Early Exploration into Disaster Films
I have always been a fan of John Ford's movies. He has a unique style of movies that are wholesome without being irrelevant. He always seems to have a major social community event such as a wedding or a funeral that helps identify the unity of the society. He often has an individual that is or becomes an outsider to that same society and, through that antagonist, we gradually discover both the positive and negative traits of each. There is always a romantic aspect and a religious aspect to the movie as well.By the time the movie has ended, we have usually discovered how the individual has succeeded or failed as well as how the society has been affected by the events in the movie.Life goes on although often a bit sadder but wiser. We, in turn, are often a bit sadder but wiser as well.Happy endings occur in Ford's movies but usually at a price.

Wow.Incredible special effects close out the last half hour of this film, in which a small Pacific island near Tahiti is obliterated by a collossal hurricane. The action scenes are amazing, as buildings, boats, people and trees are swept away by unstoppable nature. The plot revolves around the noble seafaring Terangi, a native who runs afoul of an unbending legal system, and has to go to great lengths to return to his family, and to prove his valor and nobility.Played by athlete-turned-actor John Hall, Terangi has a major "me Tarzan" quality to him, but is compelling nonetheless.Dorothy Lamour, in her trademark sarong, also plays a Polynesian. If you can get past the silliness of these white folks playing "ethnic" roles, this is a superior, and quite stunning film.As ever, a tightly crafted movie by director John Ford. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kinah's Mom
I purchased this video to introduce, reinforce and rehearse pre-reading skills with my 3 year old. This video features members of the Sesame Street Gang: ryhming, sounding out words, and playing with word families. The video subtily teaches the left to right direction for reading and reinforces phonics. The songs are catchy, which helps preschoolers to retain the concepts. My daugther is learning the songs and progessing forward in a ready readiness quite well.I highly recommend this video for parents that want their children to have a strong foundation for reading.

Editorial Review

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (Read more

A great film however if you are going to promote the DVD as widescreen at least make it widescreen and not standard format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you're not a fan of Westerns...
... you may want to give this one a go.I'm amazed to realize that it's 37 years old; I think this film is going to end up among the classics when it gets a little older.I'm not a big Western-watcher at all.But I end up watching this one when it's televised because the cinematography is marvelous. It's what I loved when it first came out (I'm revealing my age) - that and William Goldman's screenplay. For those reasons, even if you don't care for shoot-em-ups, it's worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butch and Sundance Ride into Film History
Butch and Sundance is an amazing wonderful film: in this ultimate collectors edition it sparkles like a beautiful jewel. The package is complete (I always thought the 1997 version was missing William Goldman's commentary - this one has it!): if you were a fan of this terrific western when it first appeared in the first flush of 1969-70 you will not be disappointed to revisit with Butch and Sundance and their hole in the wall gang. Its also a great chance to listen in again as 3 beautiful stars and countless other key personnel recount what it was like to put this wonderful film together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Crispin
I don't see how anyone can claim to be a "huge fan" of Crispin Glover and not bow down to the genius that this movie is.I don't see how it is not out on DVD, there's no justice in this world.Napoleon Dynamite was a huge success, so we know there's a market for this kind of strange, inexplicable, dry, end of the rope comedy.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely devoid of any redeeming value...Painfull to watch...Watch anything else
As a huge fan of Crispin Glover's quirky movie personas, I was so completely blown away as to how unfunny and acutely boring this movie was.It truly is a memory that I will try to forget; of being duped into hoping that this would be the quintessential Glover pic showcasing his unique humour, and also being fool enough to continue watching the forced performances hoping for a nugget of something to make it all worthwhile. This movie is a cruel joke, and you're the target. It is so badly written and directed that it should be shown in film schools as an example of how a bad writing and directing can make even the most talented actors look lost and unlikable. This movie is so bad it makes Vincent Gallo's films look like Scorsese by comparison.Incoherent screenplay with contrived moments of surreal epiphany with a constant stream of blathering nonsensical dialogue by Howard Hesseman's "Ed".If you love Glover, do not see this movie...You've been warned...this is a total dog.I am so pissed that I watched this POS.

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD release 11/7/06 exclusive to Boxed Set
This title will be included the next Marlon Brando Collection set from Warner's. It has not been announced for separate release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bizzare, Grotesque, Disturbing...And Yet Strangely Brilliant
Reflections in a Golden Eye is a film based on the Carson McCullers novel of the same name. It surrounds the lives of Major Penderton (Brando) a repressed homosexual married to an unsympathetic, emasculating woman-Lenora (Liz Taylor), who is having an affair with Lt. Langdon whose wife Alision, has descended into self-mutilation-cutting off her nipples with garden shears-unable to come to terms with the loss of her child. As the movie begins the audience is greeted with an eerie musical score and is introduced to Private Williams a loner who seems to have a predilection for horses-among other things.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Daring Film Classic
"Reflecions in a Golden Eye" is a deliberately slow moving, moody, atmospheric rendition of a literay classic. Critics and audiences were not impressed in 1967, when it was first released. But to compare it to international masterpieces such as Luis Bunuel's films, Carl Theodore Dreyer's (The Passion of Joan of Arc)masterpieces, and even Ingmar Bergman's unforgetable views into the dark psyche of "normal" and "abnormal" people, is to realize how close to the mark John Huston was. The acting by the four principles is truly moving. I'll never forget Brando's expression after his wife's horse throws him. Gives this film a chance. It is sad and quietly passionate at the same time. ... Read more

I am unsure of how many versions of "Tom Sawyer" that I have seen, regardless, nearly every one had its charms as does this version. While this version plays more as a vehicle for Jonathon Taylor Thomas and Brad Renfro, the story still plays out much like Mark Twain's original.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5 star movie - 1 star dvd
I don't have a lot to add to what so many others have already said. There is truly no excuse for releasing such a severely edited version of this film on dvd.Now that MGM is being distributed by 20th Century Fox (one of the best dvd labels) instead of Sony (the worst of the major labels) perhaps they will consider issuing a new edition of this film.
3-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the warning...
I was just about to add this to my shopping cart when I read, to my horror, that 30 minutes were cut in a spectacular display of bad judgement on the part of MGM.The "pre-Hawaii" scenes were, to me, the most compelling scenes in the film: Jerusha saying goodbye to her little sister (movingly recalled years later when Abner says goodbye to thier daughter); Jerusha standing up to her husband during the voyage to Hawaii; the tragic death of one of the wives during childbirth and Abner's subsequent "You WILL LIVE, Jerusha" speech (which happens to be my favorite moment). I guess for now I'll stick with my double-VHS copy until MGM comes to thier senses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why has this been cut?
A totally awesome movie when it was first released, Hawaii is based on the James A. Michener bestseller. Even at three hours plus, it still had to leave a lot of Michener's novel untouched, but the basic idea is still there. The breathtaking cinematography adds to it, as does an outstanding Elmer Bernstein score. Then there's the acting by the stars, Max Von Sydow as the missionary who goes to Hawaii to preach to the natives, and brings his own brand of religion with him. Julie Anderws is outstanding in a rare non-singing role as his wife. Richard Harris is excellent as the sea captain who is amazed that the preacher's wife turns out to be an old girlfriend.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Mother, what have you done mother?"
`Psycho' is probably one of the most definitive films of cinema, not just horror but of pure American cinema. The acting, the direction, the plot, script...everything is utterly brilliant and can compare with today's standards and still stand out as truly inspired film.Alfred Hitchcock was probably the smartest movie-maker of his generation, and maybe even ours, for he knew how to get what he wanted with very little, to make the most of what he had and he always delivered something smart, edgy and ahead of it's time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect film making!
One of those films that does everything right! And it is a horror film no less!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Hitchcock's Best
Though made in 1960, it still captivates and charms you like it was made yesterday. Well, maybe that phrase is inaccurate because if it were made yesterday, it would more than likely suck: as does most of the horror movies made.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really funny
The first half is a hoot the whole way through, it has to be the funniest Young Indy episode. The ending is great; I remember being surprised when I first watched it on TV, so I won't give it away.I'll just say Giulietta isn't as naive as she seemed.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series to start with
Though the series is plagued with misguided efforts to steer Indy into the company of historical greats, this time Lucasfilm keeps the improbabilities to a minimum. This pleasant surprise allows Indy some interestingcharacter development. This is the only tape in which both hours aredevoted to romantic plot lines.5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This has to be the best out of the titles released in the UK so far ('Phantom Train of Doom', 'Treasure of the Peacock's Eye', 'Daredevils of the Desert' and this itself). I know that may not be saying all that much, but this is truly a FANTASTIC chapter of Indiana Jones.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This Version!
I just finished watching this and loved it! I got it because I really like Laurence Harvey and I remember how much I enjoyed the book when I read it years ago. I felt this version was perfect (missing only more emphasis on Philip's early years-if you've read the book) and the most perfect aspect was Kim Novak. I have never been a Kim Novak fan, infact I've always kind of disliked her but she IS Mildred. I felt she was totally believable in the role without going over-the-top which would be easy to do. I even forgot she was Kim Novak-she looks so different from her other more popular roles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still remembered 13 years later...
Though I haven't seen this episode since it originally aired in 1992, I still see it so clearly in my memory. It is my absolute favorite out of the entire series. I still remember being astounded by the quality of the writing in the moment in which Schweitzer talks to Indy concerning his philosophy of "reverence for life," and thinking that nothing on TV at the time came close to the meticulous production values exhibited in every episode of the program. And probably very few things on network TV today can match it either, if anything (hard to say seeing as I watch barely any TV anymore). I highly recommend at least this episode, but there are many other fine ones as well. I only hope this series will be out on DVD very soon. It will probably look even more marvelous than it did originally!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indy finally gets it, but forgets it.
I thought, from reading the description, that this would be boring. But it wasn't, not by a long shot. It's probably the best "Young Indy".5-0 out of 5 stars Action, but above all, Indy learns to care about life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Defining a generation?
`Clueless' is probably the equivalent of `The Breakfast Club' for the 90's generation.I went to school with these kids; sadly...I was one of these kids.`Clueless' is also one of the smartest comedies to come out in the 90's for it capitalized on everything that made teenagers of that era funny and stupid. The 90's was a much easier time. Now we have films like `thirteen' (probably the best film to come out in 2003) to describe life as a teenager...life today is just so much darker than I remember it growing up.

Clueless is a thoroughly delightful film, this edition improves on it with excellent bonus features - all are good, but Fashion 101 is not to be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps James Bond's BEST Outing
GOLDFINGER is a very good movie. Perhaps it is the best James Bond film of he entire series. This one film contains many definitive aspects of all the James Bond films in the series. GOLDFINGER is very different from its two predecessors. The level of sophistication is much higher. Visually it is more stunning and is lavishly produced establishing a high standard for many of the cinematic elements associated with a James Bond film. Sean Connery gives his most sophisticated and distinguished performance as James Bond in GOLDFINGER. His friendly and easygoing approach in this film combined with his look of determination and confidence, wit, charm and a physical dexterity all add to his arsenal for self-preservation in order to see the job of eliminating the opposition to fruition. Even the main villain Goldfinger, who is more menacing and cunningly diabolical than his predecessors, is given greater depth by screenwriters Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn. Gert Frobe's performance and visual presence as Goldfinger is one of the highlights of this film and the series. He is a constant menace to Bond as they play a cat and mouse game throughout the film. The intriguing golf game is a highlight of their confrontation. Once again another distinctive element to the Bond formula is introduced during the golf game in the form of Oddjob, the main villain's henchman who kills his victims with a steal edged bowler hat. Returning to Richard Maibaum and Paul Dehn, it can be seen that the script of GOLDFINGER is perhaps the best structured and balanced giving the plot elements, action sequences and the familiar Bond gadgets integrated treatment producing a solid story. Their script is also rich with character development meticulously incorporated into the story, which is never intrusive to the film's flow but is part of the cohesiveness of all the visuals skillfully directed by Guy Hamilton and expertly edited together by Peter Hunt. Of those visuals it is Production Designer Ken Adam's distinctive set designs that also help define the film's "Bond look" where he creates a unique look of functionally modern almost futuristic sets that dominate the screen with his iconic style. Cinematographer Ted Moore did some of his best work on this film utilizing photographic techniques to produce a dynamic and lavish look to this film. John Barry composed (along with lyricists Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley) the main title to GOLDFINGER sung by Shirley Bassey, which is probably the most recognizable song from the series and immediately brings to mind images of James Bond to this day. This melody used and often referred to throughout the score integrates the James Bond Theme along with John Barry's own distinctive musical motifs and style once again lending credence that this is the definitive Bond film when combined with all the other superlative elements presented in GOLDFINGER. The "Bond Girls" and their specific role in the Bond formula are best represented yet uniquely presented in GOLDFINGER seeing that the formula in this film is tweaked a bit. Usually the formula dictates that Bond has one leading female partner who accompanies him on and off during his exploits. There is also the sacrificial lamb that becomes sexually involved with Bond but along the way pays the ultimate sacrifice, which only intensifies Bond's resolve to vanquish the villain. Also, there may be a female villain who Bond also becomes sexually involved in and her fate varies from film to film. GOLDFINGER as a film stands on its own. It is good filmmaking. As a James Bond film it could easily be considered the best of the series.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sean Connery IS James Bond
Sean Connery is the ONE and ONLY James Bond - Agent 007. That's it. This is his best outing. GOLDFINGER has a great script, villain, girls, location, gadgets, music and action. Who could ask for more when you really examine it? The DVD image is good but I question the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio on my laserdisc looks closer the theatrical version. The extras on this DVD are outstanding just the same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Six Stars
This is one of my favorite Bond movies. It begins with the beautiful Shirley Eaton, and just gets better. This is a classic which really set the pace for future Bond flicks. Sean Connery, Gert Frobe and Honor Blackman are great. The world can thank Ian Fleming for having such a wonderful imagination. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts's mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won't get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great acting
Wonderful, gritty acting from all characters.IMHO, Duval gives the greatest, most moving "death scene" of all time in this film.Almost 20 years on, it still haunts me.

I liked this movie when i first saw it and i seen it about 10 times... i like to watch any movie that involves gangs (especially bloods & crips) so i can learn from them...

4-0 out of 5 stars a great movie !
It was an awsome movie it was the first yong indiana jones i ever saw first i watched the temple of doom then i saw raidersthen i saw the the last crusade.the only thing i didnt like was how indys girlfriend was solving all the mystery and indy was a scardy cat and the part with panchovilo lost me to but in all it was a great high adventure film !

2-0 out of 5 stars A review of the entire series
These comments are based on the entire series as they have been currently released on video. When this show was first broadcast, it was loved by a certain 12-year-old boy (me).It had everything: adventure, love, history, interesting locations.I especially liked the "bookends" of 92-year-old Indy, where people always looked at him as just some old man, and they had no idea the amazing life he had lead.
4-0 out of 5 stars Indy plays Ned Nickerson
I would have given this 5 stars, because I really did enjoy it very much. But I can't quite get over the fact that for much of the first half Indy whines and follows his girlfriend around reluctantly, as she initiates all the adventure.I can understand that, at 16, Indy isn't going to be exactly the same as when he's older, but really, when he was played by River Phoenix, during the "Last Crusade" prologue that took place in 1912 (four years before this one) he had much more initiative.Read more
