5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite movie of all time!
This is an exceptionally wonderful, entertaining film;I've watched and enjoyed it many times, and my teen and 'tween daughters have also fallen in love with it.The other reviewers have more than adequately described the outstanding performances of Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Johnny Depp. One of my own favorites in the film, however, is Hugh O'Conor as the young parish priest, Pere Henri. His rendition of "Ain't Nothin but a Hound Dog" (while working in his garden) is priceless.Kudos also to Lena Olin in her role of Josephine, who evolves from battered wife to confident tavern owner. I can't imagine anyone not loving and enjoying this movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Highly acclaimed. That, I knew. I watched the first 30 minutes, which is 1/4 of the movie, before I decided to hang it up. New lady moves into a conservative French town and opens a chocolate shop. This upsets the local church, even before she begins unleashing secret desires and so forth with her sinful chocolate. Okay. Can you really carry 2 hours with this single plot? Nope. This one's boring.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice movie
I enjoyed this movie very much. It's not your average love story of tortured hearts. It is mixed with some fun whimsy and a sexy Gypsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only One Downside...
This movie is one of the BEST family dramadies ever - it shows that "normal" is REAL and not what we grew up with on "Leave It to Beaver" or "Father Knows Best".You laugh, you cry, you experience all stages of marriage, child raising...just life in general. The ONLY downside is that it hasn't been released in WIDE SCREEN!!I had to wait many years to find "Moonstruck" in wide screen, and "Parenthood" deserves to be seen in all it's theatrical glory.Soon? Please??

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This is certainly an underrated classic. This is a funny yet serious look at several generations of parents and the challenges of bringing up kids. It is a witty and well written brilliant comedy with an endearing storyline. The all-star cast is superb and blend well into their roles. I can't really single out one actor, they are all great to watch. If you're a seasoned parent (or not) you should watch Parenthood, perhaps own the DVD to watch occassionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars If she's wise, why is she waiting in our neighbors car!
Steve Martin who is one of my favorite actors really shines in this tell tale comedy about a family from the top patriarch(played by jason Robards) down to his granddaughters and grandsons. Robards has 4 children---played by Steve Martin, Tom Hulce, Harley Jane Kozak, and Diane Wiest and all of them each have children.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Funny what night does to a man!"
John Wayne plays a rancher, Dunston, who has a large ranch north of the Rio Grande in Texas. His adopted son Matt (Montgomery Cliff) returns from the Civil war to assist his father on the ranch. Due to post-war economic conditions, ranchers in Texas are unable to sell cattle locally. Dunston determines to drive 10,000 head of cattle to Missouri one thousand miles away. The trials and tribulations of the cattle drive, as well as the intricacies of the relationship between father and son are the primary focus of the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epic Western that is Character Driven
John Wayne at his best. An all star cast lift this film from a western genre to an intense character driven plot. An ego driven John Wayne is not so lovable as he pulls out the darker side of his character Tom Dunson. In his screen debut Montgomery Clift is riveting as Mathew Garth. He pushes his character into principles first as he is forced to go against his mentor. A great classic movie with great direction, great acting, and photograpy. If you are a western fan and a John Wayne fan... this classic is a must to own.

3-0 out of 5 stars I tried, but I'm sorry it just isn't a very enjoyable movie to watch.
After reading all the accolades and excitement about this movie, I went ahead and bought it.It has been decades since I saw a John Wayne film, but I do remember that he was not known for his acting range.I will say I thought his performance was good and his character was somewhat interesting. But the overall story was only mildly engaging, and I found the violence to be gratuitous.I'm all for violence when it is properly placed and appropriate, but I just didn't find the final scene, where Dunson kills Cherry and then makes up with Matt just yards away, to be believable. As they wrap up the light-hearted ending, I am still thinking about Cherry (who appeared in the movie nearly the entire way from Texas) lying dead just a camera pan away, while we are just supposed to forget about him and laugh it up about how Dunson isn't such a bad guy after all.I guess I just missed the point about how Dunston could just mow down so many people throughout the movie, and then at the end suddenly everything's supposed to be fine.I guess that is how we are supposed to believe the Old West was, but for me it left me cold. ... This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in Every Sense of the Word!!
Dick Van Dyke brigns to life Caracticous Pott, an inventer whose inventions never seem to work out the way he wants. One thing I didn't realize for the longest time was the play on words in the creation of name. Take Caracticous Pott. He's a 'Crack-Pot' inventor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Memory of the Heart
There are just some movies that will always have a place in my heart and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of those.I still remember when I took my children to see the original and how thrilled they were to see a car that could fly and sail the seas.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple Story - Simple Songs
I can't see how this movie can compete with all the newer, more flashy kids' movies that are available. However, the story is simple and sweet and so are the songs. I bought the movie because my autistic daughter likes simple musicals which feature kids and she enjoys listening to me sing the movie's songs which are so easy to learn. There are better choices for Disney movies from this era, like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. ... Read more

Alfred Hitchcock takes on Sigmund Freud in this thriller in which psychologist Ingrid Bergman tries to solve a murder by unlocking the clues hidden in the mind of amnesiac suspect Gregory Peck. Among the highlights is a bizarre dream sequence seemingly designed by Salvador Dali--complete with huge eyeballs and pointy scissors. Although the film is in black and white, the original release contained one subliminal blood-red frame, appearing when a gun pointed directly at the camera goes off. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much-Maligned Hitchcock Classic Has Enough Cinematic Bravado to Satisfy Fans
There is one scene in Alfred Hitchcock's 1945 classic that epitomizes what's both cinematically unique and logically wrong about the whole venture. Late in the story, comely therapist Dr. Constance Petersen and her inadvertent patient John Brown (or is it Dr. Anthony Edwardes?) set off skiing on an empty, pristine slope in Gabriel Valley. The two attractive stars are obviously shot standing still against an aggressive wind machine in front of a moving screen matte of the Alpine scenery. It's really a concurrently thrilling and silly-looking shot designed to build suspense, and it's easy to dismiss its artifice until it all ends in a key revelation. The rest of the movie suffers from the same conflicting dilemma, i.e., isolated moments of cinematic bravado that interweave with a preposterous Baroque-level storyline.
5-0 out of 5 stars Early Hitchcock - A Must for all Film History Fans
To see Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman in their youthful prime, that undefinable "star" quality that is so missing in Hollywood's current `celebrity' movement: where talent takes a back seat to appearance, lack of charisma and obsession with youth, was certainly a pleasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will He Kiss Me Or Kill Me?
Ingrid Bergman is a psychoanalyst and, according to her male colleagues, a cold fish. This changes when Gregory Peck shows up as the new head of the psychiatric institution. The only problem is, Peck is not who he says he is. In fact, he doesn't even know who he really is. Bergman is determined to help him find out, but meanwhile, the man whose identity Peck has assumed is missing, perhaps murdered... The psychoanalysis in the film is pure hokum, and the plot's contrivances are perhaps a bit convenient. But Bergman and Peck are terrific, and the Dali dream sequence is as unusual a sight in a Hitchcock film as you could hope for.

4-0 out of 5 stars give it a chance
some might pass over this movie because of of the material on abortion, but I think that would be a mistake. True, there will never be a movie where they show the typical face of abortion, women who have other options but don't take them, but at least this film doesn't ram its views down your throat. Rather, the story is a lot like the music, gentle and relaxed, moving at the pace of the wide eyed innocent, Homer. I love Lasse's movies anyway, and wasn't disappointed with this one. He brings you along without any high drama, infusing things with a sweetness most directors pass over in favor of over the top action and dialogue.
3-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book, liked the movie
I enjoyed this movie. It was well-made and well-acted.My only issue with it is that it lacks the depth of Irving's novel.Obviously, recreating that would be a near-impossible feat in this medium. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in this case I'll take the words.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good adaptation of a wonderful book
The film version of the book has some great performances, especially from Michael Caine. It helps that John Irving himself wrote the script. It's a nice, touchy-feely movie but the plot somewhat drags in the middle and the characters become somewhat fuzzy as well. But I enjoyed it very much. It's one of Tobey McGuire's strongest performances pre-Spiderman. Charlize Theron also showed her pre-Oscar dramatic chops here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRULY WONDERFUL FANTASY
Here Comes Mr. Jordan is a delightful 1941 fantasy film that would later be remade with Warren Beatty (although not nearly as good) as Heaven Can Wait. Robert Montgomery, father of Elizabeth Montgomery of Bewitched fame, plays boxer Joe Pendleton, who is on the verge of fighting for the title. Joe is plucked out of his airplane just before it crashes by an inexperienced angel played by Edward Everett Horton who wanted to save him the pain of the crash. The Angel's Boss Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) finds out that Joe isn't supposed to die for another 50 years and orders the over-eager Angel 7013 to put Joe back in his body. Unfortunately, Joe's body has been cremated by his boxing manager.
5-0 out of 5 stars This film needs to be more accessible
Here Comes Mr Jordan is an exquisitly feel good film. With great acting and an wonderful storey. In this day and age where VHS is disappearing faster than artic ice it surely cannot be beyond somebodies wit to produce it on DVD and make this and other of its ilk more accessible. I personally do not have a video recorder anymore but love films like this and would buy them in DVD format. So come on somebody Mr Jordan is Waiting.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Your body . . . worth chemically 32 cents."
Most movies at least make an attempt to develop realistic plots; this one is content with just the opposite - and to good effect. A boxer (played by Robert Montogomery) dies in a plane crash, only there's been a mixup in Heaven: he wasn't supposed to die for another 50 years. When the "boss" Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains) tries to put him back into his old body, it's too late: he's been cremated. So he finds another body, actually two - the first, a very rich man, and then, when that doesn't work out too well, another boxer.

Editorial Review

William Hurt is perfectly cast as an arrogant surgeon who treats patients like interchangeable cogs in the machinery of his medical practice. Then he is diagnosed with throat cancer and, as the title of the memoir on which it is based tells us, he gets a taste of his own medicine. The subplot involves the solidarity between doctors, which is shattered when the newly conscious physician discovers that one of his partners (Mandy Patinkin) is trying to cover up a case of malpractice. Hurt is solid, as is Wendy Crewson as the doctor who treats him and Elizabeth Perkins as a fellow cancer patient. Interestingly, Hurt's fellow actors Patinkin, Adam Arkin, and Christine Lahti all wound up playing doctors on TV's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good jobs by the entire cast...
High-level surgeon William Hurt comes down with cancer, and is forced to evaluate modern-day health care from the viewpoint of a patient. He finds that even with his wealth and education, the world of oncology is scary and confusing and at times, degrading. Does it make him a better doctor, to have been on the patient's side of the room for months? Take a look at this well-done movie and you'll get an answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kim Novak....Ooooo.....la......la.....!!!
This is a classic film.I was a teenager when I first saw it and I fell in love with Kim Novak just like Jimmy Stewart did---so I was in good company! (And, "once in love always in love!:o) Besides the beautiful Kim Novak, you have Mr. Hitchcock using San Francisco's Fort Point as a backdrop where Kim Novak jumps into the SF Bay.Also used is the little town of San Juan Bautista some miles south of San Francisco. This little town is where the old Spanish Mission is located and important scenes of the movie were shot.If you are "new" to "Vertigo" you must see it!Enjoy!Email is boland7214@aol.co

5-0 out of 5 stars The master filmmaker's finest and most complex film
It is unusual to see a director produce his best work after the age of 50, but that is exactly what Alfred Hitchcock did. Starting in 1948 with "Rope" and ending with "The Birds" in 1963, this was the era of his most inspired films. "Vertigo", in my opinion, is the best film of his entire body of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
You won't be able to stop laughing. It features two cops Muldoon (quiet and easy going) and Toody (talks too much). They are best friends who are opposites. They are always getting themselves involved in unusual and hilarious situations. I own the whole 8 Vol. set and won't part with mine. Good clean humor and fun for the entire family. Volume 1 has "Who's For Swordfish? You won't belive what this pair will do for a day off to go fishing. The whole precinct is in chaos over schedule changes. "Something Nice For Sol" They can't make up their mind what to get for Sgt. Abrams 25th anniversary on the police force. When they decide, the real laughs begin. If you can only get one volume, this is a great choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sesame Street - Grover - Video
As a mom, this is one of my favorite Sesame Street videos and my two-year-old also loves it. Grover is my favorite character and I bought the video because Grover is featured on the cover. I love Grover's interactions with the "blue man" ...they are so funny. Along with Grover and the "blue man", there are great songs and videos of children eating and playing. Some of our favorites are... "blueberry mouths" and "cereal girl" . Excellent video!!

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY FUNNY FOR KIDS AND GROWNUPS ALIKE
Grover is at his best in this hysterical video. With his typical humor, he teaches us how to eat more wisely. There are alot of great inside jokes for the parents, too. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mangled but not totally destroyed
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
4-0 out of 5 stars We's all from Tennessee....
This movie is a real gem and John Huston does a remarkable job in creating a fairly realistic looking Civil War environment. You won't find any overweight re-enactors aiming their rifles at the sky and not showing any signs of fear. No this movie provides actors and men like Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin, who knew well what real war was all about. The battle scenes are quite good for the period in which they were filmed and certainly have a more realistic feel than some of the battle scenes depicted in more recent Civil War "epics".

OK, I'm not a film critic. I do like older movies, especially Hitchcock mysteries and John Wayne Westerns and that makes me decidedly middle-brow. This is a Classic Movie, with a great cast, Eleanor Parker plays her part so well,I just love her,as for Charlton Heston, his part as the arrogant plantation owner is stunning, you just have to hate him when he first meets his proxy bride, and then later you understand why,This is a real thriller,so nice to watch a movie where there is no swearing or blatant blood letting, and yet it keeps you on the edge of your seat till the climax

4-0 out of 5 stars The Naked Jungle (aka Lanigen's Ants)
Charleton Heston and Eleanor Parker star in this movie about love and army ants.I believe it was originally released as "Lanigen's Ants".Heston plays a wealthy land owner with very definite ideas of love and marriage.Eleanor Parker is his mail order bride who enlightens him to what love and marriage should really be.The army ants are there to wreak havoc with his hard earned dynasty and to threaten their blossoming relationship. As a Charleton Heston fan, I really enjoyed this movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Forty square miles of agonising death!"
The Naked Jungle's reputation rests on its last couple of reels, when plantation owner Charlton Heston battles the Marabunta, the twenty-mile long, two-mile wide army of billions of soldier ants ("forty square miles of agonizing death!") heading straight for the empire he carved out of the jungle with his bare hands. Well, his and the local natives bare hands. Of course, you have to get through an hour of soap opera first as the arrogant and virginal Chuck ("They have a word for men who go to the native villages at night. No one ever used that word about me") is more than a tad miffed to discover that after shipping new furniture and a new piano out to the jungle that he's been sent a second-hand mail-order bride in Eleanor Parker, despite her admonitions that "If you knew anything about music, you'd know that a good piano always sounds better if it's been played!" But then you have to expect that sort of thing when you marry by proxy (we learn that William Conrad, who played the Heston role in the earlier radio version of the original story, stood in for Parker!). Still, at least Ranald Macdougal and blacklisted Ben Maddow have fun with the script with exchanges like "I've been trying not to irritate you." "I noticed that. I find it irritating." It would have been good to have less of the matrimonials and more of the Marabunta, but the picture is great fun for both the right and wrong reasons and I can't say I felt short-changed revisiting it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOMEONE PLEASE PUT THIS SERIES ON DVD!!!!!!!
This is hands-down one of my all-time favorite shows. As a child growing up in the late 60's, early 70's, I watched the re-runs religiously.Being a member of a dysfunctional family with lots of abuse and violence, I wanted to be adopted by the Addams family.Unike other shows, where the characters mock each other to get laughs, the Addams clan loved and supported each other's wacky ways. They deeply loved each other and thought that whatever any one of them did was wonderful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Republic Studios! Where is the DVD for this series?
The humor in this series was much more sophisticated than The Munsters which if I'm right actually came afterwards. I wonder if the reason this hasn't come out on DVD is that it was made by Republic Studios. Republic Studios is no more and possibly the company that owns the rights isn't interested in the work necessary to restore this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average 60's TV Family!!
Remember the Addams family ? From 1964 to 1966, an entire generation grew up watching the antics and misadventures of this mysterious, eccentric and unorthodox family, who were polar opposites to the clean-cut, "Leave It To Beaver" or "Father Knows Best" families on television in the 60's. They were based upon the cartoon sketches of artist Charles Addams in the New Yorker magazine. The cast included Jon Astin as Gomez Addams, the father and head of the family, Carolyn Jones as his wife Morticia, Lisa Loring as their daughter Wednesday and Ted Cassidy as their tall, zombi-like butler, Lurch. The jokes and gags of the family are well known and always comedic. Gomez is a high-class lawyer, of Castilian/Jewish ancestry who loves to go on Safari and who is passionately devoted to his wife Morticia. He would become aroused whenever Morticia spoke French to him. Morticia is a dark, mysterious, intelligent, artistic and classy woman with not so average values. She has raised Pugsley and Wednesday to be so secure in their peculiar ways that the normal people are the odd ones to them. This occurs in the pilot episode, in which Pugsley and Wednesday are sent to school through the admonishment of a truant officer, Mr. Hilliard. But Pugsley and Wednesday prove to be too bizarre and difficult for Mr. Hilliard to handle. Memorable is the scene in which the kids become frightened after reading the Grimm fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" and Morticia deems the story too violent because a witch is killed in a hot oven. The second episode has the Addams consulting a child therapist to check on Pugsley, who has displayed "normal" behavior- joins the Boys Scout, plays baseball, etc. The Addams were a family like no other, with the exception, of course, of the Munsters, who were also on their own tv show at the same time (1964-1966). Available at Amazon.com are several episodes of all the seasons the Addams Family were on television. Sit back and enjoy the comic stylings of this unforgettable family. The shock that this must have been to normal families of the 60's are parellel to the same way the Osbornes on MTV continue to surprise their audiences. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Richard Gere plays an enrollee at a Naval officers candidate school, and Debra Winger is the woman who wants him. That's pretty much it, story-wise, in this romantic drama, which is more effective in a moment-to-moment, scene-by-scene way, where the two stars and Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr.--as Gere's tough-as-nails drill instructor--are fun to watch. Sexy, syrupy, with occasional pitches of high drama (Gere having a near-breakdown during training is pretty strong), Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still emotional
This film really stands the test of time-and the famous line: 'I ain't got no place to go' is still strong enough to pull a tear from your eye. It's hard to believe that Debra and Richard didn't get along through the filming of this classic.Hollywood rarely get these romance flicks right, but this one is dead on.Now romance films have to be a comedy. When was the last Hollywood straight romance movie?Richard Genre (the King of romance films: Pretty Woman, Last Knight, Runaway Bride.)is fantasic and Debra Winger never looked or acted better. (except for the that small little film called: Terms of Enderment.) Do yourself a favor and see this movie again.
