3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing original but the script and acting keep it centered...
`Center Stage' is above all else generic. It's very much like every other teen comedy / dance movie but it does have a few things going for it.The script is decent and actually has some pretty good sub-plots that draw you into the characters. The dancing sequences are a nice touch too and are orchestrated in such a way that it is above all else captivating. And, while the majority of the cast are unknowns (which in itself serves as a con) they all seem talented and deliver their lines with confidence and maturity (especially Zoe Saldana and Susan May Pratt, both of which are common in these teen films as the sidekick or best friend to the star). The story of a Jody (Schull) trying to make it as a ballerina but is failing miserably but after becoming the muse of the arrogant ex-student turned professional dancer (Stiefel) she finds hope to be a professional herself. The school is full of other talented dancer with problems of their own. There's the bulimic (Pratt) who is dancing solely for her mother, and there's the gifted yet misunderstood student (Saldana) who's just looking for a fair shot. It's an entertaining film, if not predictable and generic but if you're a fan of the teen dramedy or films like `Save the last Dance' (a film much better than this film) then you should enjoy `Center Stage'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantabulous
When you watch a dance movie you seldom expect the dancing to be great due to the fact that movies contain actors and not dancers but this is one movie that threatened to break that mould. The acting was average but the dancing and choreography were hands down the best that i have ever seen captured on film. This movie showed that a little hard work never hurt nobody and that if you want something you should fight for it tooth and nail because perseverance seldom fails... the dancing would make you get out of you chair and dance because after all that's what it's all about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!
This is a great movie. This movie has some sexual references, but no nudity. There issome profanity but definitely a funny movie that is geared to older children about 14 and up. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN OSCAR MET COOPER....A TIMELESS TRIUMPH!
For those who wonder why it took so long for SERGEANT YORK to make his journey to DVD, all you have to be familiar with is how AWFUL this movie looked when TCM ran it on TV. Like so many older Warner pictures, it needed to be restored, and over and over again, the grand old studio founded by the brothers Warner is restoring is glittering gems for DVD to look and sound terrific.

Editorial Review

Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it's almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed--no doubt to make money between his smaller, cheaper masterpieces--but one would have thought he would invest something of himself in here. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie Musical
The Amazon review by Tom Keogh is totally ridiculous. "Charmless and dull???" I saw this movie about 8 times when it came out when I was little and was loved it so much. It's full of adventure, great songs, and a story about wanting to belong that children and adults can both relate to. The performances are great. One of Carol Burnett's best. If you haven't seen this movie yet, see it now.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not "Tomorrow" ..... Today!!!
If you haven't already seen this one, do not wait until "Tomorrow", do it today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bond for the Uncomplicated and Uncritical
It isn't so much that Diamonds are Forever is bad, it's just that it's clearly the worst of the Connery Bond films. It does have a few good qualities. Shirley Bassey's singing of the decvent title song being one of them, Connery's usual professionalism and talent being another, but overall it's quite silly and inconsequential. The kind of people who like this one are generally those uncomplicated sorts who get confused easily and prefer their films to be as shallow as possible, so all they have to do is sit there passively and not think or get involved in the film. The fact that this Bond is essentially the true beginning of the Roger Moore era is a big part of the problem with this film. Like I said, it's silly. The distinctly unremarkable chase scene with Bond in the cheapo looking moon buggy is an example of this, as is the abundance of bad Bond-style quips, which seemed to comprise half of Roger Moore's dialogue and takes up way too much of Connery's here. I mean, there's nothing wrong with fun, but there IS a limit, you know, especially when the "fun" is as low rent and shallow as it is here. But, like I said, there are plenty of reasons to like this Bond. The actors are all-around decent, it isn't their fault that the characters are so uninteresting. Nothing seems developed, there's no sense of spy-type espionage action here, which should be the centerpiece of every Bond film, otherwise why make one. The main Bond girl being playued by Jill St. John is another drawback. Not that there's anything wrong with her, it's just that her "type" doesn't seem right in conjunction with Bond. There's just nothing exotic about Jill St. John, as decent as she is her presence lends a sitcommy atmosphere to everything. The fact that this story mainly unfold in Vegas is another problem. Vegas is the land of chintz and cheese, shiny superficial glamor with little substance. It does lend Jill St. John's presence some meaninging, as she pretty much seems to be just the type of woman that James Bond would meet up with in Vegas. The entire film just seems way too... American. I guess you could say that Diamonds are Forever, for whatever good you may find in it, is really the nail in the coffin for the whole series. After this, it could pretty much only be a parody of its former self. There just isn't ANY room in the world for a James Bond from the 1970's onward.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Paradox in the Cinematic James Bond Lineage
When I first saw DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER I thought it was esoterically good from an eclectic viewpoint. It was the last Connery James Bond movie I had viewed. I had already watched the first 5 that he made. They were a little too serious. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was more like Roger Moore's James Bond movies. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was very different from the earlier ones, especially George Lazenby's stand-alone ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. George Lazenby is the definitive James Bond in my mind. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was closer to Roger Moore's THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and the exceptional and misunderstood A VIEW TO A KILL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Campy, But Good
"Diamonds are Forever" is the third James Bond film I've seen (the other ones being Thunderball and You Only Live Twice) and it's probably my 2nd favorite of the three. It's got one of my favorite opening sequences, great action sequences, a hot Bond girl, two odd assassins, and of course who could forget Bambi and Thumper.

Editorial Review

A refutation of then-President George Bush's notion of 1,000 points of light, this film by director Tim Hunter is about what happened when holes in the social safety net created a homeless population of unprecedented size during the Reagan-Bush years. The film focuses on two of the homeless: a sweet but troubled young man (Matt Dillon) and a more rugged, worldly-wise homeless Vietnam veteran (Danny Glover), who befriends him and tries to teach him how to survive on the streets. Dillon's character is schizophrenic, unable to get the medication or attention he needs to treat his problem. Instead, he winds up in a Manhattan men's shelter, a kind of Darwinian house of horrors haunted by streetwise predators (led by a scary Ving Rhames). Though overly sentimentalized at times, the film also serves as an indictment of a system that lets too many people like Dillon's character slip through the cracks. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Painful and Excruciating Reality
I won't deny that this is a difficult film to watch especially if, like me, you have lived in New York City for any length of time (I was born here). It's the story of a homeless man named Jerry (Danny Glover) who takes under his wing a schizophrenic but basically kind, gentle and loving young man named Matthew (Matt Dillon). Jerry helps Matthew adjust to homelessness amidst a bureaucratic system that sabotages the success of anyone trying to escape it. It isn't fully clear why Matthew's mother has abandoned him - though with Matthew's history of mental illness, you get a good idea (horribly cruel as it seems). Jerry not only calls Matthew his son but also names him Saint Matthew, the Saint of Fort Washington (because of his healing touch to those in pain). I think this is an important film for everyone to see at least once (even with the few holes in the story - like why Matthew's mother's neighbor doesn't call to ask if Matthew could stay in his mother's apartment while she is away or why Matthew and Jerry don't go back to their friends' place to stay after the friends leave - maybe those answers were left on the cutting room floor).
5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about Fort Washington
This little known gem is a gourgeous film in many ways. First of all it's a rewarding buddy movie: the young schizofrenic Matthew (Matt Dillon) becomes homeless and it's obvious that he doesn't know the streets and their uncanny laws. But then he meets the elderly black Jerry (Danny Glover), a big wounded Vietnam veteran who takes Matthew under his fatherly wings. Together they wander the streets and try to get by by washing car windows at intersections. Being together (or rather: not alone) makes everything look a little brighter for Matthew, and in a way, for both of them.
4-0 out of 5 stars no title
Very heartfelt and basically sad movie about homeless men in New York with Danny Glover and Matt Dillon.I had not seen Dillon in some time and I am once again impressed by his work.He is very, very good here.As several critics have written, and I agree, the movie is best on a straightforward level, without trying to put goodness, or threats, or couples in love, into its plot. The long shots of all the cots in Fort Washington, and the banks of lights going out, were chilling. But Glover's character was too good, even with one bout of perverseness thrown in.I thought more should have been done with Dillon's photography, perhaps. It's always so easy to have a character die in the end; it wraps things up.It's much harder to write a continuing life.I felt the same about "Backdraft".It's like the chicken way out.And how do you know which homeless person is truly deserving and which is not?Certainly Carl wasn't.He put himself there - nobody else. But what a waste of human beings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I bought this a long time ago for my kids, and we all loved it.My daughter who is now 19 and I have been searching everywhere for this because our's was broken. She found it on Amazon the same day I did and she called and said she wanted to get it for my younger son.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This video was my 13 year olds favorite when she was a toddler, she played it so many times I'm surprised it still plays. Now my 8 month old sits there in a daze and watches it from beginning to end. She doesn't like Baby Einstein or regular cartoons yet but would watch this since she was 6 months old. I'm planning to buy it for Christmas gifts. I think this is the best Sesame video they made, even an adult can be entertained by it. The down side is I can't seem to get the songs out of my head.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites and finally found it on DVD!
The acting's excellent, the music's amazing, and the combination of Mikhail Baryshnikov's--Misha's and Hines' dancing will blow you away.Russian ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov essentially plays himself--a Russian ballet star who escaped the USSR in the 1970's and sought asylum in the US.When a plane carrying him crashes over Russia, he's back in the Soviet net with no escape. His handler is Gregory Hines, a US dancer and US expatriate who renounced his US citizenship.
3-0 out of 5 stars Two Spectacular Performers Dance Around One Weak Cold War Thriller...Literally
Seeing this 1985 movie (dubbed without irony by director Taylor Hackford as a "political dance thriller" in his DVD commentary) over twenty years later in a pristine new print reminds me exactly what I thought about it back then. That is that Hackford recruited two world-class dancers of completely different genres and then went about and contrived a far-fetched Cold War thriller story around them. It is really the unparalleled dancing that makes this film still watchable beginning with Mikhail Baryshnikov's extraordinary performance of Roland Petit's ballet, "Le jeune homme et la mort", opposite Florence Faure over the opening credits. His artful athleticism inevitably makes the rest of his acting feel rather pedestrian, as he unsurprisingly portrays Nikolai Rodchenko, a world-renowned Russian ballet dancer who has defected to the US after having been the leading performer of the Kirov Ballet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Summer Nights
I love it that this is out in DVD so everyone can watch it over and over to see how these dancers work out and get in shape and see their joy in dancing.I was amazed at Baryshnikov's flexibility, when he does the splits on the floor, against the wall, and the strength of the jumps of both dancers.Hines' footwork was really beautiful, too.Being a dance devotee, I am always very impressed with the way dancers work so hard, and you could see it here. The movie had a fun plot that was serious, too.You knew it would end up okay but it made you think. The music was excellent and upbeat, too, as well as the scenes of Russia and the theater.I'm happy to have this in my permanent collection, because it's really a classic for dance fans. ... Stone fox is about a 12 year old boy named Willy, it is a great movie. From adam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stone Fox
Warning if you are sensitive this may not be the movie for you. It is about a boy named Little Willy whoes Grandpa gets sick and Little Willy has to take care of him. Then Little Willy enters his dog Morgan in a dog sled race, for much needed money. But he will have to compete against the unstopable Stone Fox. ( This is the time to bring out the tissues) poor Morgans heart gives way. Then Stone Fox says anyone cross this line and i'll shoot. Then Little Willy carrys Morgan across the finish line. This may be a tear jerker it is a REALLY good movie!

1-0 out of 5 stars worst adaptation ever
This movie adaptation is awful. If you are familiar with the book you will need some antacid after seeing what they've done with the movie.Instead of a potato farm in crisis they change it to a cattle ranch.Instead of Grandpa's illness due to money worries they call it a stroke.Instead of a cranky old woman doctor they make her young and pretty. They add school chums and a pretty little girl love interest. They even change the poor dog's name.Little willy is portrayed as a whiny brat. Oh, No! the people who made this movie had no respect for the beauty of the simple book.Don't waste your money on this hideously expensive and poorly done adaptation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilled again!
This movie was as I remembered seeing it in the 1950's. Gordon Macrae is the handsome dashing hero, who happens to have one of the greatest singing voices ever. (He wasCurly in Oklahoma.) So the movie is a bit smuchly! It is still one of the most romantic movies ever.If you want all the music of the operetta, you'll have to buy an audio recording. But still all the favorites are here. Pop some popcorn, light the fire, put your feet up, and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great musical
Katheryn Grayson and Joel Mcrea are delightful in this musical.1-0 out of 5 stars Only passing resemblance to the stage version
The movie version of "The Desert Song," with Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson, is an okay musical movie, but in many significant respects it bears only a passing resemblance to the stage version. Having participated in the chorus of a high school production of Desert Song in 1953, I was very much disappointed in the movie.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice
One of the classic Disney movies I remembered was the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Reading this novel gave me the same feelings I had in my childhood years watching the movie. I could be wrong but it seems to me that everything in the book was exactly like the movie. Alice was reading her sister's book and fell asleep under a tree. Then she woke up, saw a rabbit in clothes with a clock talking. She then followed the rabbit into this hole. After that she was in a never ending tunnel, which lead her to a strange world. Alice encounters many obstacles in the story and showed how she dealt with them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
In the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll a young girl with the name of Alice travels to a distant land that seems altogether and quite possibly unreal to her.The book starts off with Alice in the park with her sister. She has nothing to do as her sister is reading so when Alice sees a talking white rabbit scampering by, she doesn't hesitate to follow it.Following the rabbit leads her to a world she could have never dreamed of.This book can take you to magical places you would have never dreamed of.Through the use of Carroll's thorough descriptions and dramatic elements this book is sure to take you on one wild ride.I thought that the book was very well written and very interesting.I could really imagine what the characters look like and feel how Alice would have felt.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure and lots of twists along the way. This book is for children and adults alike. As long as you have an imagination and a great sense of adventure you are sure to love this great tale of a girl and how she found herself in an imaginary world.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Childhood Favorite!
When I was eight years old, this version of Alice in Wonderland was aired on T.V.I thought I had watched the best movie ever at that time, and still, to this day, I have more fond memories of watching that movie than any other time in my life! The songs were beautiful!I can still sing the song Alice sang to the deer - "Why do people act as if they're crazy? Why to they behave the way they do? I have to say, this is one my favorite songs of all time!

3-0 out of 5 stars Potent spectacle allied to wretched dialogue
This movie was regarded as a failure by its director ,Howard Hawks, but for my money it is an interesting and visually striking picture .Unlike most movies set in ancient Egypt there are absolutely no references to Cleopatra and not an ambulatory Mummy anywhere in sight .
5-0 out of 5 stars Land of the Pharaohs
I watched this about 16 years ago when I was 20 and I think this movie is outstanding. It's about a pharoah named Kufu wanting a slave named Vashta to build a pyramid for him. Vashta does this because the pharaoh says he will let Vashta's people go if he builds this pyramid for him. Vashta agrees, but he still knows he has to die in the end but it's a risk he is willing to take just to save his people. It passes about 15 years and you now see Vashta's son Senta a grown man. Vashta is having a hard time reading in this pyramid because of old age and Senta decides he has to help his father and his people. Vashta is reluctant to let his son taking the chance of dying because Vashta has to tell him the secret about where the pharaoh is being burried when he passes. When Kufu makes a suprise visit to the pyramid the domino-effect stone accidentally brakes loose from the rope and falls down which triggers a pole or something to fall on Kufu. Senta helps him back up and brings him out of the pyramid knowing that Kufu knows Senta knows the secret so now Senta will have to also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Thriller
The Glass Key is a murder mystery thriller starring two staples of the film noir genre. Alan Ladd stars as a man looking for the truth and using his wits to twists information in his favor. Veronica Lake plays the beautiful daughter of a potential Senator, the sister of a man who has been murdered. The victim's girlfriend is played by the beautiful Bonita Granville.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deserves to be issued in DVD
One of the more puzzling (no, scratch that - "nauseating") things about the wonderful world of home entertainment is that the ghodawful remake of this movie (Damon Wayans' *Major Payne*, 1995) is as readily available in DVD as is human papilloma virus in venereal warts, and the VHS version of *The Private War of Major Benson* is out-of-print.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comedy classic with Sal Mineo
One of the brightest comedies of the 1950's,"The Private War of Major Benson", features brilliant performances by Charlton Heston, Julie Adams, and "scene stealer", SAL MINEO, in one of his first featured roles.Heston is "Major "Bernard Benson. A tough battle-scarred officer whose inappropriate comments to a magazine almost get him kicked out of the service. Instead, as a last resort, he is transferred to the Sheridan Military Academy for boys, aged 6-16.Demanding and unsympathetic is how he seems towards the boys, and they retaliate towards Benson. And the school nurse, Kay (Adams), is concerned that Major Benson's unorthodox methods have much to be desired. Many HILARIOUS moments fill this uproariously funny film. Eventually, nurse Kay falls for the stoic, yet big-hearted Benson.A young SAL MINEO steals the film, as Cadet Colonel Sylvester Dusik. He gains much respect for Major Benson, and has some truly comedic moments. Especially in the scene where Sylvester tells the training troups, in a frenzy, "Does everybody in this school have two left feet? Alright you guys, you're gonna keep on drilling till you do it right!" The delivery of these lines, shows Sal also had a terrific flair for comedy, and shows why he was such a meteoric rising young star! Also notable, is 6 year old actor, Tim Hovey, adorable in the role as Tiger, one of the youngest cadets at the academy. Directed by Jerry Hopper,"The Private War of Major Benson" is a true comedy classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Comedy Scores a Touchdown!
Charlton Heston is generally thought of as the hero of epic-style films. But in this family-style comedy, filmed after The Ten Commandents and before Ben-Hur, he proves he has comedy chops. As a hard-driving Army major, he is "punished" by being sent to work at a boy's milatary school. Perhaps unique to the times, the love interest of this film is not, as Major Benson first supposes, a nurse . . . but a full-fledged doctor, beautifully played by Julie Adams. A trove of child actors from that period, plus wonderful William Demarest and quite a few other recognizable familiar faces (including a very young David Jansen, in the first few minutes) round out the cast. A good script and delightful theme song (used also for another Tim Hovey movie, Toy Tiger) make this a very enjoyable experience. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Filmed in the widescreen splendor of "Panavision Super 70" and blessed with the finest production values that Hollywood clout can buy, this tale of spunky Irish immigrants forgot one crucial ingredient: a decent screenplay. The film is entertaining enough, and director Ron Howard brings his technical proficiency to the simple plot, culminating in a dynamic, breathtaking depiction of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893. But the movie is really just a vacuous vehicle for married stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as (respectively) the poor tenant farmer and rich landlord's daughter who flee Ireland to be American pioneers. The scenery and the stars are never less than stunning, but Howard falls short of the mark in his attempt to match the epic sweep of films by David Lean. On the other hand, this movie is certainly never boring even if it rarely makes sense, and Lean's own Irish epic, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This is one of my favorite movies ever. It really captures life in the 1800's slums and you really get attached to the characters. There are parts that you can barely watch because you feel for the characters. This is a great story about people who hit rock bottom and become much stronger people by becoming tougher and working their way up again to achieve their dreams. I've seen this movie about 3 times and each time I see it, it is just as good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Story Of Romance
In this epic Ron Howard film, Joseph Donelly (Tom Cruise) is an impoverished 19th-century Irish tenant farmer who has recently lost both his father and his home to the agents of his unscrupulous landlord. On a mission to avenge his family's injustice at the hands of the ruthless land baron Joseph meets the landlord's daughter and the two run off to America together where the girl expects to claim a piece of land for herself in the Oklahoma Land Rush. After she is robbed on the boat that carries them to America, they arrive with nary a penny and struggle just to keep their heads above water in the slums of Boston. After a series of serious set-backs they do eventually work their way out West, where Joseph must fight to realize his dream and claim a piece of the American Dream for himself -- and where they finally acknowledge their love for each other. Shot in wide-screen Panavision, the movie was filmed on-location in Ireland and Montana. I recommened this movie to all.
