    Editorial Review

Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in the "Fields"
I too have been waiting for this film on DVD..I have read the book twice and wholeheatedly endorse everything the director and amazing actors submitted themselves to,,(heat, general lack of amenities etc ) to bring us this absolutely great flick. I also love the similarly placed Aguirra Wrath of God,,what ever HACK wrote the New Yorker Summary as it appears above, should be suspended by his thumbs orbetter yet, whatever,,he missed the point totally,,saying the mid 60 attitudes have changed,,HA! Stupid would-be reviewer would probably make a similar statement about Pride & Prejudice or War and Peace,,buddy,we are talking universals here some things never change not will they ever,,,I wish Amazon would remove the big blurb described it does no good whatsoever,,having said my piece I will retreat and brood,,

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for DVD
This is one of the best movies I've had a privilege to view. But waiting for the DVD has been forever, where is it? When do we get a chance to see this happening. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Bates gives incredible performance!
This is a 1991 film, but don't miss it! It's a rather long tale, but you won't be bored a single minute. Bates gives a stellar performance as the wife of a missionary sent to convert the 'jungle natives'. When the mission goes very wrong, she goes mad. Berenger plays a native american who flies them in on a plane, and after he sees the bravery of a jungle native, strives to return to his 'wild heritage' by heading out to join the tribe. It's a great tale of how horribly wrong things can go when the white world tries to force their ways upon a primitive culture. It's a very deep, passionate, historic movie that warrants being watched at least twice. All the actors seem to 'feel' the importance of its message and give their roles one-hundred percent. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five star performance by Diane Keaton, as always
I'm in awe on how great an actress Diane Keaton is!Her performance in this film, though a very sad film, was awesome!!!I'm addicted to all her movies. When will this movie and some of her old movies be available on DVD? She's such an excellent actress that all her movies should easily be available to the public- especially on DVD format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another look at a darker side of life in the seventies
Even today, this movie that made a statement on the debauchery of the seventies, is still relevant. The story of a young lady out on her own for the first time, free from her morality preaching catholic dad and hungry to indulge in the night life. A frequenter of the area bar scene, Dianne Keaton in perhaps her sexiest, if not most provocative role hops from dive to dive, man to man in an attempt to whet her insatiable sexual appetite. An interesting, if dark look at the bar scene and all its unpredictability. Directed with a style of its own, and a good eye for character development, "Goodbar" is an excellent film - one of the best of the seventies. It's also one of the most chilling endings of any movie I've ever seen - one that leaves you almost gasping. Much of the subject matter of this film won't have the same shocking effect it had upon it's original release in the mid-seventies. Today's premium cable original programming (eg. "Queer as Folk) make this minor league stuff by comparison. But that doesn't make this movie any less disturbing. This is still a movie that is just as applicable to today's careless adventures into the night life. Tuesday Weld, Tom Berenger, Richard Kiley, Levar Burton and William Atherton ("Die Hard's" pain in the butt news reporter) are perfectly cast and make notable contributions. And Richard Gere in one of his earliest roles gives a performance that surely got him future roles.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Aid to Spiritual Enlightenment!
In the early 1970s I began having spontaneous, conscious "out-of-body" experiences. As they progressed, I struggled to learn how to induce the experiences ... as well as being able to exercise some control over them.I read every book on "out-of-body' experiences that I could get my hands on. Then came the film "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"! I was utterely captivated!I identified with the character of Jonathan from the begining of the story to end. I related his personal struggles to my own ... his love of "flight" and his determination to prove that there is more to life than what "meets the eye".
5-0 out of 5 stars 30+ years later, I'm still moved by it
It haunted me as a child of nine years when my mother took me to see it on its original theatrical release. It inspires me today as an adult. Why is this not out on DVD?!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grew up loving it
Until this afternoon, I did not realize just how old this wonderful movie is.Not that it matters that it's older than I am.I grew up watching this and was wondering if it would be possible to replace that old tape if there ever were reason. This film and the soundtrack LP have inspired me a great many times over the years.I will echo some others here in saying that if you watch this film the same as you would watch most feature films today, you'll miss out.You have to be able to just sit back and relax with it.Pay attention to what's going on, and what Johnathan is actually experiencing. If I could walk into a brick and mortar store and see this video on the shelf in any format, I'd probably go into debt buying 5 copies.I love this hard to find film.Just to make sure I never have to worry about losing it forever. ... Groundbreaking on several counts, not the least of which was aninnovative use of animation and stereophonic sound, this ambitiousDisney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940.Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators, resulting insurreal fantasy and playful escapism. Leopold Stokowski and thePhiladelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by thecomposers Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ponchielli,Bach, Dukas, and Schubert. Not all the sequences were created equally, but a few are simply glorious, such as "Night on Bald Mountain," "TheSorcerer's Apprentice," and "The Nutcracker Suite." The animationranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold. The screen bursts withcolor and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside. The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film, unmatched even by more advanced technology. 5-0 out of 5 stars ARTISTRY IN ANIMATION, MUSIC &THE COMPUTER ALL PUT TO FANTASTIC EFFECT
IN A NUTSHELL: LET FANTASIA SPEAK FOR ITSELF & IT SPEAKS MAGICALLY
5-0 out of 5 stars Not original but still worth having
Yes it is true that Fantasia has been edited, but that is because Disney had to edit something that by today's standards would be socially unacceptable. for the time the movie was made (1942) it would be a different situation. I agree with their decision to edit those parts out, although you can find the scenes on the internet, and they are interesting to watch, but I can agree that they were edited for good reason. and it is true, just because a movie is edited doesn't mean that those parts weren't there, but if you want to own Fantasia on DVD, then this is worth buying. the only difference from the VHS version to note is, the narration has been re-recorded, and though it is not the original narration, it is still good I only noted 1 or 2 differences in the narration from the original. this is the best (socially acceptable) copy of Fantasia you will ever find, those of you who are looking for the original version (ie 1942) you are out of luck, every re-release of this movie since the 1970's has been edited, and unless you want celluloid film you'll just have to get this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The all-time classic!
Fantasia is the all-time classic animated movie. Where to begin with this one? The animation is incredible, with stunning artwork, effects, and a huge palet of colors. The storytelling is top-notch, with excellent pacing and story development. Using classical music as a storytelling tool is A LOT harder than you may think, and the Disney animators pulled it off brilliantly. Each segment of Fantasia is its own self-contained movie, and each one is a winner. Even the weakest segment (the first one) is still an outstanding example of innovation (jawdropping for the 1940's). Other than the first segment, all stand up perfectly to repeated viewings. Fantasia is an AMAZING movie, which will entertain adults as much as children (a rarity). It is fitting in an ironic way, then, that Fantasia was also Disney's biggest flop when it was released in 1940. Oftentimes truly outstanding works take many years to be be recognized as the masterpieces they are (Wizard Of Oz, Its A Wonderful Life).

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this movie so underrecognized?
I haven't seen this movie in a while, but I absolutely loved it as a child. Just a warning, though: I've never cried so hard at ANY movie. I actually thought my heart would break for these cartoon animals. But while I'm not sure why such tragic moments are necessary for kids to endure (this is why my sister refuses to watch it), it remains one of my favorites from Disney.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated Disney Classic.
The Fox and The Hound was made in a time when Disney animation had lost some of its luster . It was one of the last films of the old guard until the transition to the highly popular animated musical "The Little Mermaid". Probably because of this it was not as highly regarded as many of the early classics and the post Mermaid period.
4-0 out of 5 stars Correct screen ratio! This movie IS FULL FRAME!
O.K. I can answer the many questions about the correct screen ratio of THE FOX AND THE HOUND.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE KICKS!!
Well, i figured it would be much eaiser to use the kids reviw-less time spent, more wrighting! A message to everyone who has not seen this movie - Your missing out on a classic. The move is about a girl named carly beth ( Wich in itself is creepy) who is allways getting picked on. Chuck and Steve, two classmates, are allways playing jokes on her, trying to scare her. Which by the way allways works. Carly Beth Wants to get eternal revenge on them for thier crule tricks, so, she goes out to find a scary mask. One day she stumbles into a novelty shop and basicly steals a mask. By the way, allthough this movie was made from smaller childeren, I found the mask scary. The artsits did a great job. It really looks real! Im a teenager and i was scared! Well, slightly anyhow. The rest of the plot developes into a halloween night of revenge and the creepy thruth about the mask at the end.

Winner of the Academy Award for best picture of 1989, this gracefully moving drama, adapted from the hit play by Alfred Uhry, chronicles the 25- year friendship between a stubborn, aging Southern widow (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal chauffeur (Morgan Freeman). At first, the self-sufficient Miss Daisy is reluctant to accept the services of a chauffeur, but Hoke is quiet, wise, and tolerant, and as the years pass the unlikely friends develop a deep mutual respect and admiration. Tandy deservedly won the Oscar for her sassy and sensitive performance, and Freeman earned an Oscar nomination for bringing quiet depth and integrity to his memorable role. Ironically, director Bruce Beresford (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm loving Miss Daisy
My wife raved about this movie for months before I actually sat down and watched it, and after the credits began to roll I think I enjoyed it more than she did. What I expected to bore me to tears in actuality kept me well entertained for its entire duration. The story of an elderly stubborn southern woman named Daisy and her chauffeur Hoke rose from ashes of mediocrity and became a brilliantly scripted and acted film about learning to accept people for who they are on the inside, not on the outside.Jessica Tandy is brilliant as Daisy. When she crashes her car her son Boolie (Aykroyd) makes it known she can no longer drive and hires a chauffeur for her. That chauffeur is quite and well mannered Hoke (Freeman), a black man who wins over Daisy's heart, and ours too, with his mild manner and caring concern for his employer. The chemistry between the two of them is so spot on it makes the entire film a delight.I'm not surprised it won for best picture, I'm delighted!

5-0 out of 5 stars Driving Miss Daisy
I'm 15 years behind most of you, but I've seen it now. It's wonderful. Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. This film covers 15 or 20 years in the life of Miss Daisy, beginning with her wrecking the car. Her son hires a chauffeur against her wishes. Etc. Dan Ackroyd shows us that he can act. After GHOSTBUSTERS and BLUES BROTHERS I had my doubts.

This is a movie I like a lot, but I am giving this version only 2 stars as a warning to other customers.Look closely at the details of the movie, under Language it only mentions German.Other Region 2 movies I have purchased that are American movies have always included an English soundtrack, but not this one.You can only watch the movie with German voices dubbed over the regular voices. It doesn't even have English subtitles.I still gave it 2 stars because you don't have to speak German to enjoy the exciting Rollerblade race at the end of the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars How About a DVD?
"By the Light of the Silvery Moon"... A GREAT film, but why is this Warner classic, along with its companion picture, "On Moonlight Bay," not being released as DVDs???

5-0 out of 5 stars Sequel as good as On Moonlight Bay
By The Light of the Silvery Moon is the sequel to On Moonlight Bay, and virtually as good. Both movies are an effective blend of comedy, music, and nostalgia. All the same characters are here, Doris Day as Marjorie Winfield, Leon Ames and Rosemary De Camp as her parents, Billy Gray her little brother Wesley -- the character based on Penrod Schofield of Booth Tarkington's books -- Mary Wickes as the cook, and of course Gordon MacRae as her fiancee just returned from fighting World War One.
5-0 out of 5 stars Doris Day and Gordon MacRae return for MOONLIGHT BAY sequel
Following the huge box office success of ON MOONLIGHT BAY, plans were immediately made for a sequel, reuniting all the key cast members and using the continuing 'Penrod' stories as the plotline.

    5-0 out of 5 stars That's Fronkenstein...
I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old...yeah, I know...I was probably too young to see this movie but I really didn't get the "racy" parts until I was much older...like 10 1/2...
5-0 out of 5 stars This version is the one to buy....
If you have a widescreen TV, this is the version you must purchase. Unlike the previous "Special Edition" version, this new release is ANAMORPHIC widescreen, finally for the first time and it looks great on my new 32 inch Sony HDTV. The only downside is no sound upgrade, just MONO. The extras are the same as the previous edition. Anyway it is cheap and worth every penny for the new anamorphic transfer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie but...
I love Young Frankenstein. However, I was very disappointed when I realized that this re-release of it only had "mono" audio tracks. This is very disappointing because I would have loved to hear it in Dolby Surround. I am actually rather confused as to why they re-released it, because it has the exact same content as the previous DVD release... possibly a marketing ploy, I dunno.Let me also make clear that THE MOVIE IS A 5 STAR MOVIE BUT THE RE-RELEASE WAS THE REASON FOR THE 4 STAR RATING. Basicly, if you already have the "Special Edition" (earlier DVD release) you may as well save your money; they're exactly the same. However, if you have never seen this movie, I suggest you do yourself a favor and buy this movie. Definately won't disappoint fans of comedy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The DVD Stinks, what a WASTE on such a GREAT Movie !
Don't need to add more that others have already said about the feature itself, but the DVD now that's another story.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Land before Time
I bought this movie for my son and he likes it. My mother bought it for me when i was a child and for her other grandchildren and we all loved it. this is a must have classic all time movie. you wont be dissapointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4:3 was the original aspect ratio
For those of you who are hesitant to buy this because it says "fullscreen", please know that 4:3 was the original aspect ratio for this film. I wish the DVD box said so. But normally a lot of these movies are animated in full screen and then when they are released in theatres they are matted out so it fits the cinema screen properly. Bambi was also animated in 4:3 or 1:33:1 as this says. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Family Dog - Family Favorite
The first half of this is a less than memorable Christopher Lloyd episode of Amazing Stories, which says a lot about the writing since Christopher Lloyd could make a piece of toast funny. The second half of this is the Family Dog, which is not only memorable, but classic and under appreciated. This animated half hour has excellent writing, animation, and voice talent - including Annie Potts as the mother. The hilarity of home life is in your face and leaves you wanting more. My sisters, brother, even my mother quoted it for years after seeing it, "Oh my gawd they've taken the coffee maker!" My family was very grateful when years after seeing it, I bought each of them a copy through Amazon. They love it and watch it over and over- and what makes a classic of something beyond the audiences love of returning to the material? Even though the eventual animated series it spawned lacked the same writing punch, I would highly recommend this to anyone with a love of good clean "art imitating family life" humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's perfect... would like it on DVD
We first watched it about 18 years ago and it's brilliant, a real gem. We watch it every couple of years now and enjoy just as much. The VHS tape (which was a copy) is almost unwatchable... would love to get the DVD.
4-0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD!!!
The cartoon was unbelievably funny! That rotten little boy and the smartass dog was too too funny for words.I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE TO ANYONE WITH AN ATTITUDE PROBLEM BECAUSE THIS MOVIE WILL GET RID OF IT TEMPORARILY. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas movie
I have worn out my VHS tape I copied off tv many years ago of this Christmas classic.I will be thrilled if they ever release it and the other Addie Mills specials on DVD. I always looked forward to seeing them when they aired. It was nice seeing the review from Lisa Lucas (Addie Mills).Nice to hear she enjoyed making these movies and knows how much pleasure she brought us all. She and Mildred Natwick and Jason Robards were so special together.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Christmas Stories Ever
It is 1946 in the small town of Clear River, Nebraska, and Addie Mills, the lively, intelligent and artistic daughter of widower James Mills, who is being raised by her grandmother because her mother died shortly after she was born, once again broaches the idea of having a Christmas tree. Her father, who has remained withdrawn and embittered in the long years since her mother's death, as always fobs her off. Then Addie wins the classroom Christmas tree and takes it home...
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my all time favorite T.V. special!
I loved watching this T.V. special when I was a young--er.I was about the same age too as Addie, and I looked forward to watching it year after year after year, but then they stopped running the special and I was so disappointed.I just took a chance to see if I could find it for sale on the Internet and low and behold, I found it so I just placed my order! You have no idea how thrilled I was to see that it was available to buy.I can't wait to see it again, considering it's been about 30 years or more since I've seen it.I couldn't remember the name of the special but all I knew for certain was Jason Robards played Addie's dad, and Mildred Natwick played her grandmother. It was one of the best things I've ever seen on T.V., and now I can pass this on to my children.

    Editorial Review

This quintessential Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland musical has all the kinetic energy and beaming goofiness that made their films together (nine in all) so popular--and so easy to lampoon. The son of a vaudeville performer (Charles Winninger), Rooney decides to put on his own show (in a barn!) to save his family's fortune, his town, his peers, and, gosh darn it, even the American way of life. The star luster generated by Garland matches the explosive energy of Rooney's performance. Director Busby Berkeley's big production numbers are a sight to behold, from a march through town for the title number to an embarrassingly dated minstrel show routine. The movie was made the same year as Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Babes in Arms
Great old movie, good watching for the times we live in. A lot of good music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mickey and Judy!
This classic film stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland as teenagers living in Seaport, Long Island, NY just before the Great Depression struck. Vaudeville is dying; thus Rooney's family business as show biz perfomers is very much at stake. When the older folks leave Seaport to put on a show and prove to the world that Vaudeville is not dead yet; they leave the younger folks behind. What to do? Put on a show! Rooney's character trys to woo some fading child star so she can put up the money for the show and bumps Garland from the lead. She inevitably retakes the lead in the show and everything ends happily ever after when out of nowhere some hot-shot producer likes what he saw in the barn show scene. (By the way, one cautionary note: the barn show scene includes a minstrel show; although typical of that era it is not only dated but potentially ofensive to some viewers.) The viewer also gets an extra treat: Margaret Hamilton has a small role as the nasty old lady who runs welfare in the town and wants to send the kids off to a vocational school. All in all, this really is a very goood movie and great fun to watch. I would add that this is an obvious must-have for any Garland or Rooney fan. A BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars An Essential for Rooney-Garland Fans
In the 1939 Mickey Rooney was among the top box office draws in the world.Judy Garland had appeared as a supporting player in two Rooney films, and the two had significant chemistry--more over, Garland had just completed photography for THE WIZARD OF OZ--a film that MGM rightly expected would launch her to international stardom. The time was right to costar the two, and MGM did it with BABES IN ARMS.
