3-0 out of 5 stars Good acting from oldsters, but bad directing and writing
To get complete enjoyment from this film, DO NOT try to put it into context with the original. The acting from the oldsterswas brillant. However, Tahnee Welch seemed to force her self to act convingly, that she wasnt very convincing. The film has its glory moments, Like the hospital scene. And the scene where the seniors and the alien steal the alien from the oceanolgy institute. The hospital scene was very well done, but messed up the intended illusion from the first film. Infact the entire movie messed up the illusion of the first. That illusion was that these people were going to space to live forever. Not that illusion is gone.Wacth this if you want good acting, but for a good story, DONT.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original but I've seen worse sequels
The suprise is known so the jig is up.As the old people return to earth for a visit, earth's atmosphere takes it's toll on their frail bodies.I'm glad they didn't do a cocoon 3 I noticed Ron Howard didn't direct this one but most of the original cast was back even Brian Dennahey who was just in the last 3 minutes of the picture ( he probably wanted too much money) It wasen't bad, but it just didn't live up to the energy and awe of the first movie.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars great movie
A very nice continuation of the first movie, well worth watching,as stated earlier, the hospital scene between Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy is very touching, and the basketball scene was hilarious.Good sequel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bit SLOW at Times, but 90% Bible Accurate, and 10% Bible Rearranged Nicely!
I never heard of this film until I saw it on amazon.com's "People Who Bought This Also Bought..." web feature. I am glad I saw it there, it is a very interesting 1950's film starring a very famous Hollywood star, Gregory Peck!
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Alfred Newman's finest scores
If for no other reason than Alfred Newman's wonderful music you should see this movie. Newman was the head of the 20th Century Fox music department during it's glory days. He also conducted the scores that he composed. Newman's scores draw the audience into the drama, making them care for the characters. I highly recommend this DVD for the Newman score. The story, acting, direction, costumes, etc. are very entertaining, as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars David and Bathsheba

Editorial Review

America's pastime gets a Faustian twist in this 1958 studio musical, which recounts the ballpark bargain struck by an aging Washington Senators fan obsessed with helping his team trump the Yanks. With echoes of the real-life 1919 Shoeless Joe Jackson scandal, and tart observations on the tradeoffs between youth and experience, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whenever I'm Ready For Baseball Season
Certain movies really capture the feel of their themes, and this one is the one movie that really captures the magic of Baseball like no other. Of course there is a great moral lesson to be learned. But haven't we learned by now, that the Devil has no good purpose in wanting to help us to achieve our goals? I hope so. What a great cast of performers. Nothing was lost from the Broadway stage in this production. And nothing is lost from the movie in this excellent transfer to DVD. Through the magic of Hollywood, when done to perfection, film can even enhance the story. And few have done the job with a Musical as well as this Gem. Thanks largely to the astounding talent of Bob Fosse's choreography. Tab Hunter's shining moment. Gwen Verdon's 'Whatever Lola Wants' is the showstopper, but Ray Walston steals the entire film as an extremely funny Devil. A film favorite for most of my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Damn Yankees
i remeber, seeing this movie baasically, when it was first released. and as I have a large collection of musicals, I wanted to add it to my collection, as i had not seen it available in Australia. After viewing Damn Yankees after 40 50 years, was very enjoyable, Gwen Verdon great, and Tab Hunter, yes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 50's Musical
Once upon a time, Broadway musicals were quickly adapted into successful widescreen presentations, often, but not always, with the original Broadway stars. This is an example of one of Hollywood's best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, and an Excellent Feature
The Film COCOON is a definiteclassic. It's much more than just a comedy. The basicoutline of the Aliens who cometo rescue their groundcrew and how some old folks get involved is revealing on many levels. It is a great film with superb entertainment value, and if you look at it more deeply( after listening to The Directors Commentary).
5-0 out of 5 stars this will change the way you see the elderly.
If there's one thing other reviews don't tell you much, is that Cocoon is an extremely sad film, one of the most touching movies ever made. It centers around the human nature, choices we make and the ones we love around us. One of the kind, innocent character's death in the film and the moments leading up to it is probably one of the saddest things you'll see in a movie. It's an incredible film that makes us feel almost sorry that we live here on earth with no chances of living forever to see the wonders and beauties of the universe. The cast is flawless, every person in it did a great job and you really felt for the characters. This is a must have, and must watch. As someone else said it, every elderly person should watch this film, it's really a moving experience and will always remain one of my favorite movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars A SIMPLE TWIST OF FATE...
I recently had the opportunity to view this film on the Lifetime cable channel. A remake of the 1967 film of the same name, which was a fairly faithful adaptation of Truman Capote's sensational non-fiction book, thisversion does not disappoint the viewer. Although it does not have the gritty,quasi-documentary feel of the black and white 1967 film, which starred Robert Blake and Scott Wilson in the two lead roles, it is compelling in its own right and a fairly faithful adaptation.
5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this version better
I liked this version better than the 1960s version. I thought it followed the book more closely. I teach Criminal Justice at Dodge City Community College, which is not far from Holcolm. I make my students read the book. Most complain that compared to recent crimes, this one seems somewhat tame. i have to remind them this happened in the late 1950s and was very shocking to the small town. I liked the cast really well. i don't think any movie will ever be better than the book, however, I did really like this movie, and plan to buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad "Blood"? No, just mediocre!
I recall hearing that this television remake of "In Cold Blood" was actually truer to the source than the '67 film had been. That would be the one advantage a miniseries could possibly have over the stark theatrical original. As with the television version of "The Shining,"faithfulness to the original text is one possible advantage of a 3-plus hour version, perhaps THE one possible advantage.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OH!BETTY ,GRABLE NEARLY LOSES IT
well its 1953, betty has been off the screen for a year, marilyn has been stalking the fox lot doing small pics, then she dos niagra , bettys away on suspension , zanucuk has to pay grable $400,000 a year ($15 million in todays money) while he can have monroe for peanuts, so monroe gets gentlemen prefer blondes and grable gets farner, well grable dos millionaire with monroe as her next movie then goes to columbia for three for the show, grable throws in the towell, leaves fox goes to television and las vegas. betty oh betty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Canal girl Grable falls for earthy farmer Dale Robertson
Colorful remake of the 1935 Fonda-Gaynor drama, this 1953 Technicolor musical comes across as fresh, vibrant and as American as apple pie.The story is based on fact - when the Rome Canal, NY, is under threat from theadvance of the railroads. Whenfarmer Dale Robertson is hired to work onthe canal, Betty Grable falls for him, but their romance is in conflictwith his interest in the land, and her loyalty to the canals. BettyGrable - in her first film after a year-long suspension - is excellent asthe feisty canal boat cook and showed she had lost none of her glamourduring her long absence. A tuneful show, with lots of homespun comedynumbers, the Grable leg show suffers due to the 1850s costumes, but shedoes manage a number or two with Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon as they danceto choreographer Jack Cole's tune. Great support from love rival JohnCarroll, and some excellent comedy from scene-stealers Thelma Ritter andEddie Foy junior. Spectacular outdoor settings, for which the studio builta complete working canal, including locks, on their backlot.Gloriouspiece of Americana! Well worth having if only to watch Grable singing theopening number "Today I Love Everybody" - a breath of fresh air.

Editorial Review

Scott McPherson's off-Broadway hit made a strong transition to the screen in this 1996 film by director Jerry Zaks. Diane Keaton stars as a woman who, while taking care of her vegetating father in Florida, discovers that she has leukemia. Only her long-estranged sister (Meryl Streep) or the sister's children can provide a possible match for a bone-marrow transplant. But the reunion is a rocky one, marked both by Streep's guilt at having abandoned her sister to take care of their father, and by the explosive dynamic between Streep and her rebellious, pyromaniac oldest son (Leonardo DiCaprio). As grim as this all sounds, there is a strong vein of black humor running through it that has the viewer laughing at unlikely moments (particularly Keaton's visits to her distracted doctor, a surprisingly funny Robert De Niro). But rest assured: tears will flow, even as the film makes you reassess all of your own family relationships. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVS
MARVIN'S ROOM delivers on all levels. Stellar actors in heart touching and gut wrenching roles as well as an honest portrayal of family conflict centering around an ailing father. This film makes me laugh and cry every time I watch it, and I pull it off the shelf about once a year. They don't make enough films like MARVIN'S ROOM.

I own the first two volumes of the Lost Treasures series and am waiting for the third to arrive on my doormat. They are brilliant and I hope more volumes appear on a regular basis.
1-0 out of 5 stars Broadway's Lost Treasures
I can't write a review because I had to send both CD's back because they would not play.I just ordered another one yesterday, and here's hoping that will be okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again
Being a farm boy from Illinois, "the-ay-ter" could have been in a foreign country and I would have never been wiser.Area schools performed shows written especially for high schools (like "Mississippi Melody" and "Up On Old Smokey").In 1971, I had just purchased a state-of-the-art reel to reel tape recorder and was anxious to do a bit of experimentation with it.As fate would have it, I saw an ad on CBS for the 1971 Tony Awards telecast and thought I'd see what kind of sound quality I would get from the tinny little speaker on the television.I had no idea the format for that year was to perform 1 song from each award-winning show using as many of the original cast members as possible.Even though the sound quality was far less than perfect, I realized I had an audio tape of more original cast members singing songs from Broadway shows than I could shake a stick at.And many of the songs were familiar from television variety shows like Ed Sullivan etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars The only movie I ever walked out in the middle.
If your are big into tap, you will like this. It just wasn't my cup of tea if you will. It just went on and on with no end in sight.

5-0 out of 5 stars LONNETTE MCKEE STEALS THE SHOW!!
"THE COTTON CLUB" is one GREAT FILM!I loved everything about it,the cast,(even Richard Gere),the history of Harlem, the history of the rackets, the sets, the music, the dancing, but Iespecially LOVED the fantastic LONETTE MCKEE,who dominated every scene she appeared in.What beauty, what singing and dancing talent, what great emotional range of love, hurt, and tenderness she displayed, in this highly underrated(by the critics)motion picture.I cannot understandwhy she hasn't become a major star.Hollywood is notorius for it miss handling of actress, especially ladies of color and I guess Lonette is suffering the same fate as Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge, among others suffered, but that was over sixty years ago,you would have though that things would have changed.Bob Hoskins,Fred Gwynne,James Remar,Gregory Hines(as a hoofer and Lonettes' love interest),and Nick Cage are among the actors that add to the flavor of "THE COTTON CLUB".The GREAT GWEN VERDON haslittle more than a cameo as Geres and Cages mother.Diane Lane didn't do anything for me,but she wasn't bad as Dutch Schultzs' mistress, who falls in love with Dixie Dwyer(Gere). But this Lonettes' show and SHE STEALS IT!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the most famous Harlem' s nightclub!
The creative energies of Coppola were still sparkling. This movie is a heartfelt tribute to an Age that just lives in the memory of a whole generation, that were teenagers after the WW2 and grew and grew up under the magic spell of Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt, Errol Garner and a countless list of big names of the Jazz. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good but Missing Something
This movie should be great but misses widely. It has all the Woodyesque elements of whimsy, absurdity, profundity, pathos and comedy but it never really comes together.Farrow's chattering, self-absorbed housewife is not very sympathetic and, since she is in practically every scene, the movie feels weighted down by this poorly written character. The pacing seems awkward too.Allen's best movies almost always have a daring go-for-the-jugular-forget-the-critics air about them.Like too many of his almosts, Alice seems like a practice movie. As if Allen is unwilling to wholly commit to his own material and just go for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice in Woody-Land
I bought this film after seeing it many times over the years. It's a wonderful take on Alice in Wonderland, Woody Allen style. Fine acting, the usual glammny NYC scenes, and a fantasy any woman can relate to.
