5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD...?
Think what you want, Doris Day was a fine actress. This has to be one of her best. She did drama as well as comedy (remember "The Man Who Knew Too Much"? Hitchcock loved blondes...) This is a clever film, with a terrific cast (and also John Gavin, so nice to look at...)With a real draught of good suspense films lately, why isn't this scary, fun movie available on DVD? Anyone agree...?

Editorial Review

Jan Morrow (Doris Day) and Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) have never met, but they're sworn enemies because of one small appliance in their lives: the telephone. The two share a party line, and Jan is outraged over the amount of time Bill spends wooing women over the phone. A convenient triangle emerges when a client (Tony Randall) of Jan's--she's an interior decorator--falls in love with her and happens to be Brad's old college chum. When Brad makes the connection, he decides to try to court Jan himself, to make her more sympathetic to his phone woes. Of course, she'd never go for such a heel, so he passes himself off as Rex Stetson, a Texas rancher visiting New York. The ensuing tale, albeit predictable, is lots of fun, with some quick-witted dialogue and some clever use of split-screens for the phone calls.Thelma Ritter is hilarious as Jan's always-hung-over maid, Alma; and the pairing of Rock and Doris works beautifully, as always. This film is enjoyable and Doris Day and Rock Hudson are very good together.Add Tony Randall and you have a film with lots of laughs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated Froth
A predictable pile of doo doo.I can appreciate good acting but the acting has to have a story attached to it.This movie is nothing more then a bunch of stupid scenes with Miss Day at the centre. The story line is so thin it's barely visible. The acting while good really doesn't jell together and one is left wondering just what they are talking about.I guess it's a favorite for fans of old films like my partner is but oh God I had to fight to stay awake to get through it.A flimsy forgettable pile of fluff which sends social progress back to the dark ages.Just plain stupid in my opinion.I can't believe it was that successful when it first was released.

5-0 out of 5 stars STANWYCK SCREAMS HER HEAD OFF!!!
Stanwyck screams her head off in this, her last theatrical release!I don't know how she kept from rupturing her vocal chords! She's the greatest actress that ever was!!Robert Taylor (her ex-husband) looks simply terrible in this film. This was four years before his death from lung cancer.Barbara looks sensational but Taylor looks and acts really bad.The movie is a neat little thriller with a dandy opening!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Creepy camp shocker has hoots, howls and thrills
I first saw this gem on TV in the mid 1970s on a Saturday afternoon. It frightened me as a child and fascinates me as an adult.Another in a string of William Castle shockers, this film has a great performance from Barbara Stanwyck along with plenty of cheesy thrills and campy dialogue as only Castle can deliver ("When I'm awake with you my life is like a nightmare!").Memorable music adds to the spell. The recent horror hit "House of Wax" pays homage to "The Night Walker" in a key scene. Why isn't this on DVD?

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely HYSTERICAL!!
Stanwyck, Stanwyck, Stanwyck...she runs amok in this film, most likely channeling the rage she felt towards her agent. She kicks with her pumps and screams with her gin-cracked voice! The bizarre score enhances the creepiness of the film, an atmoshpere which otherwise mostly comes from the bad screenwriting--that kind of creepy!Robert Taylor, Stanwyck's ex-husband acts with her in this one as well as Lloyd Bochner as "The Dream".If you even mildly appreciate William Castle and creepy, campy classics, get it for a huge belly laugh, you won't be disappointed...Stanwyck at her worst-best!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Missing DVD
I whole heartily agree with the other reviewers about Parrish not being on DVD.What is going on? I've been waiting for the past few years for it to be issued. Why are Warner Bros.so delinquent about putting out their back cathalogue?Missing on DVD,alongside Parrish,is The FBI Story, Ice Palace,The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs,Susan Slade,A Summer Place, John Garfield's best picture The Breaking Point and what must be their most glaring omission 1941's King's Row. I suppose we should be on our knees to them in thanks for putting out Johnny Belinda!Huh!

5-0 out of 5 stars parrish
This DVD has been in this status for at least six months. What is the holdup? Why has this classic 1961 film not yet been recorded in DVD? Why has the status been not yet released suggesting that it is intended to be when the status hasn't changed in actually longer than six months? Are the producers just pulling our chain? Will somebody make a decision now! I think there has been enough stalling on moving on this. Make it a DVD now! It is better than the multitude of garbage I see today on DVD that linger on the rental shelfs for eternity. Anybody who knows great films and appreciates films throughout the era of filmmaking knows of this film and wants it on DVD. So act now and stop the indecisiveness that seems to have the producers in the grip of indecision. There are many more great films that should have by now been on DVD.

I love this movie. I love movies from the early 1939 t0 1951
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, Amiable Sequel to Francis The Talking Mule
Donald O'Connor gave a glow to just about anything he ever appeared in.He's wonderful here, too.In Francis, the Sequel, he's back as sweet-natured, newly discharged Army Lieutenant, Peter Stirling. The film picks up where the original left off, so there's a nice feeling of continuity to it.Poor Peter can't seem to stay out of trouble, and poor Francis can't keep himself from coming to the rescue, much though he might like to.There's a nifty scene of Francis' over-imbibing and slobbering affection all over his human buddy, and a brief duet of "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean" between Peter and Francis that's just enchanting.Nice film. Not the best in the series, but a fine sequel and well worth seeing.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Donald O'Connor
People may think movies about a talking mule are for kids or for the insane but don't be quick to judge. These films are hilarious for young and old (even though some of the jokes kids wouldn't really get). These two are two of my favorites out of the six that I own.Donald O'Connor, my favorite actor(who is I think extremely underated)gives a fabulous comedic performance in both of these films.I've seen these movies hundreds of times and they always remain extremely witty and charming.Don't miss out on classic comedies like these. ... Editorial Review

Winner of the 1951 Academy Award for Best Special Effects, this science fiction extravaganza set a new standard for the realistic depiction of cinematic disasters. Of course, it's a quaint curiosity by today's technological standards, but as produced by visual effects pioneer George Pal, this story of Earth's collision with a runaway star is still a dazzling example of screen sci-fi from the '50s, when special effects were entering a new stage of advancement. Despite scientists' warnings about the star's destructive potential, government officials refuse to take action that could cause international panic, but a consortium of private industrialists prepare for the worst by building a gigantic spaceship--an ark for humanity to begin life anew on a distant planet. Who will be chosen to go, and who left behind? As earthquakes roar and massive tidal waves devastate entire cities, the huge rocket prepares for take-off from its miles-long launching ramp--ready to abandon the shattered Earth! Although it's more enjoyable now as a cinematic museum piece, Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Danny Kaye goes to Zyra
This film is OK for a 1950s sci-fi flick. A Star Bellus (Latin for War) collides with Earth while 44 people, chosen by lottery, escape by "20th. Century Noah's Ark" to the new Eden of Zyra. The acting is the typically affectless style of this Genre, but Richard Derr(complete with strawberry blonde hair)is further hampered by lookingand sounding too much like Danny Kaye for a convincing hero or romantic lead.
4-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC SCI FI
I'M A BIG FAN OF SCI FI.THIS CLASSIC IS VERY GOOD IN TERMS OF PLOT, ACTING, AND EVEN THE SPECIAL EFFECTS.I'M SURE IT WILL BRING ME MANY HOURS OF ENJOYMENT.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Best Of A Bad Lot
Hollywood has not done well when it comes to movies about celestial objects hitting the Earth.I had seen the poorly done "Meteor", and the comically bad "Armageddon" and was warned away from "Deep Impact" (although I am sure I will eventually see it), but for some reason I had never seen the one which started it all."When Worlds Collide" was released in August of 1951, shortly before "The Day the Earth Stood Still", and while it too suffers from some bad science, it is a much better movie than the more recent efforts.

Doris Day stars as Phil Silvers partner in his Broadway show that is a flop called Parisian Pretties a long with 2 other people. Phil is a down and out person who is a looser and a free loader who depends on Doris for the rent and a lot of other things. Doris meets a famous screen wright while working at a HOTEL to pay off their big debt and when Phil finds out he tries to convince her to tell them about him and to try to get him to help them out and get them a chance in the big life. But Doris teaches Phil that the best way to get anywhere is to work for it! So they get into the play and turn from sad people to happy people and Doris finds love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walton's Mountain's big momma.
This wonderful family movie, filmed amid spectacular scenery, was based on a story which was the progenitor of Walton's Mountain. Warm, sometimes embarassingly sweet, it chronicles the lives of a family living among the Grand Tetons. Their challenges, their joys and their sorrows are all touched upon as Clay Boy, the oldest son in a large fanily, struggles to make a place for himself in the world. With stars like Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara at their family best, backed up with many other memorable character actors and actresses of a wide range of ages, they all add to the joy of this final product. A rare movie the entirefamily can enjoy. My favorite part: when Henry Fonda starts a fire in the old wood stove and Maureen O'Hara later takes out a huge pan of steaming biscuits as the entire clan prepares for a breakfast fit for a king (or queen).

Many of us have considered "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" to be Debbie Reynolds' best film.It was first released in the summer of 1964 and was a big hit with audiences and critics, who recognized that it was a wonderful adaptation of Meredith Willson's Broadway musical. It was about the last musical made by MGM, where Debbie had made a number of musical films during the 1950's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sirk and Thoreau
All That Heaven Allows is my favourite Sirk film. All his characteristic stylistic trademarks are present: high contrast lighting; precise, tight framing; expressive colour; and frequent use of reflected images and domestic interiors framed through objects like screens and windows that suggest confinement and entrapment. Sirk is dealing here with lives repressed by social conventions and projections of surface respectability.
5-0 out of 5 stars Style and substance
One of the single most influential films to come out of the 1950s world cinema, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS is probably Douglas Sirk's masterpiece, realizing most perfectly his notion of combining middle-class melodrama with exquisitely glossy and perfectly framed screen compositions. It's one of the least campy of his films (though it does have its satisfyingly ridiculous moments here and there--pay attention to the sudden appearance of the deer in the last scene), and he was able to coax a fine performance from his star Jane Wyman, who manages to anchor the emotionally overwrought screenplay by projecting true feeling. The film's plot is operatic, but its also incredibly obvious and heavyhanded: a well-to-do New England widow (Wyman) falls in love with her handsome individualistic gardener twenty years her junior (Rock Hudson), and thus incurs the wrath of her children and the contempt of the country-club set. That's it, but Sirk pumps everything with so emotion that the story might as well be lifted from Homer or Virgil, and so people have seen the film as much more meaningful than any surface reading of it could possibly allow. In many ways, the film is all about how surfaces can be allowed a totalizing power that comes to substitute for depths. Although ostensibly the film trumpets a rejection of mid-century American materialism in favor of the rugged individualism Hudson's character champions, the form of the film constantly tells us that things are lovely and people are not (at the film's conclusion, Hudson's character signals his love for Wyman's widow by transforming an old deserted mill into the kind of fussy, beautifully chosen interior that might be showcased in a homes magazine). And no male actor has ever seemed more to embody the appeals of surface beauty than Rock Hudson, with his titanic handsomeness, mellifluous speaking voice, and underreactiveness. Had Hudson been paired with another Sirk female star like Lana Turner the whole thing might have lapsed into sheer ridiculousness; but Jane Wyman manages to bring something to the film that causes everything to hold together. The great scene where she is given the television set at christmas has been justly celebrated, but she may be at her finest in the lovely scene where she comforts her distraught daughter (Gloria Talbott, who does much with an otherwise awful part). This film has been enormously celebrated by later directors, including Fassbinder and Todd Haynes (both of whom have made their own films that pay tribute to this) and Tarentino and Scorsese.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation,"
This gorgeously melodramatic potboiler was made in the mid-50's just as Jane Wyman's star power was waning and Rock Hudson was becoming a superstar. But All That Heaven Allows is most memorable as a study of small town intolerance, now it's portrayal of a world that is mostly picture perfect - at least for the inhabitants of Stonington, Connecticut where the movie is set - comes across as rather quaint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Clem
This wonderful Walt Disney film is the civil war adventure/historical drama loosely based on the true story of Johnny Clem, the Drummer Boy of Chickamauga. They call the film Johnny Shiloh due to the Shiloh battle in the movie. In the film, it is 1861 and little Johnny Clem has run away to become a drummer boy at the age of 10 for the "Blue Marauders" platoon of the Union Army. He can't stand them going to war without him since he has drilled with them as their mascot drummer in his home town for so long before getting their orders move out. He is too young to serve at 10 and he is returned home, only to run back again. The next strategy of the union army is to wear him down by treating him like a real soldier, but his heart just won't give up. He is allowed to stay on as a real drummer. After showing incredible bravery on the battlefield as a drummer during a fierce battle, and saving his seargents life by shooting a confederate officer that is about to strike him down, Johnny gets promoted to a seargent and assigned as a messenger to for the general. He is captured by the confederates and must escape to deliver valuable information to his general that could affect the outcome of the next big battle.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Drummer Boy Clem, reporting for duty!"
Ever since I was a little kid this has been one of my favorite Disney films. I'm a Civil War fanatic & I've spent years trying to collect every Civil War movie that's available! Unfortunately, this gem has gone out-of-print but you can still buy it used from a dealer. I e-mailed Disney recently asking them to release this classic on dvd but they replied (with courtesy) that they currently have no plans to do so. This is based on the true story of "the Drummer Boy of Chickamauga", Johnny Clem, who ran away from home to enlist in the 22nd Michigan Infantry at the age of 11(!). Despite the fact that the movie portrays Johnny Clem as a hero at the battle of Shiloh, the fact is that Clem wasn't mustered in until five months after the battle. That's okay, though, the scene is very entertaining. Johnny Clem really was captured & brought to Confederate Gen. Joseph Wheeler, although their meeting wasn't as friendly as in the movie. In reality, when the general saw Johnny Clem, Wheeler said,"What are you doing here, you damn little Yankee scoundrel?" Johnny Clem looked the general square in the eyes & replied,"General Wheeler, I am no more a damn scoundrel than you are, sir." Such was the fighting spirit of young Clem. Johnny Clem shot & killed a Confederate colonel at Chickamauga & thus was promoted to sergeant. He continued to serve honorably & retired in 1916 with the rank of Major General. This is not a masterpiece but simply good, clean entertainment for the whole family as only Disney can deliver. One word of advice, however, on buying this from a dealer: make sure you order this only from a dealer with a high customer rating! I first ordered this back in May but never recieved it (I won't mention the crooks name). I recently ordered it from a different dealer who has a high rating & recieved a great copy in no time. Learn from my mistake! One more thing, if you want to learn more about Union drummer boys I recommend Dennis M. Keesee's outstanding book "Too Young to Die: Boy Soldiers of the Union Army".

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald. Read more

I had never seen this film before purchasing it, but took a chance that I would like it as much as everything else I have seen with Doris Day; I wasn't disappointed. Doris Day and James Garner were great together, it left me wishing that they had made more films together. I had expected it to be cute and fun but I didn't think I would be laughing so much! If your a fan of Doris Day or James Garner then you really can't lose with this movie.

A young Kurt Russell stars in this good-natured comedy. Steve Stone isan ambitious mailroom clerk at a third-rate television network when he stumblesonto the fact that his girlfriend's pet chimpanzee, Raffles, can pick ratings winners. Suddenly he's well on his way up the corporateladder and getting his network to No. 1. Keeping Raffles and hisabilities a secret provide the perfect setting for wacky, wicked comedy. The truly funny cast of Joe Flynn, Harry Morgan, Wally Cox, John Ritter, andothers make up the executives and their cohorts. Not wanting to be made foolsof, the executives try to save their dignity as well as their jobs by relocatingRaffles. There's lots of physical comedy and downright silliness. Talkabout monkey business!Released in 1971, this film can appear dated at times, but the story still holdsuptoday. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work from one of my favorite periods of live-action Disney films
The Barefoot Executive may appear to just be a light and fluffy 1960s/1970s-style Disney comedy, and it can certainly be enjoyed that way, but you don't have to dig very far below the surface to find a subtly clever satire of the television industry with a very insider feel.Having worked in radio for a while, and having friends and family who do or did work in television, as well as reading a lot of behind the scenes books on television programs, a lot of the jabs at the industry feel spot on.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Barefoot Executive
I am delighted to see that two of my favorite Disney films have been released on dvd, "Million Dollar Duck" and "The Barefoot Executive."Descriptions of the plots for these movies are already noted here, but I will say that both these films are very enjoyable family viewing.I can remember going to the theater as a child and watching these films, and I still enjoy them today. Nobody's claiming they're the best films ever, or even the best Disney films ever, just good, fun entertainment in the grand Disney tradition. Some have complained about these films not being released in their original aspect ratio's, or being remastered for dvd.Although I would have preferred them released letterboxed as well, neither film was released in a very wide aspect ratio, so they play fine on tv, and as for Disney using the same masters they used for the vhs releases and tv airings, if that's what they did, big deal. Those prints are fine.Sharp, clear pictures, with good color.Sure, it would have been nice to have remastered letterboxed versions on dvd, but be grateful we have them on dvd at all. They've both been a long time coming.

2-0 out of 5 stars Five reasons to skip this one.
First of all, I must say "The Barefoot Executive", which was Kurt Russell's second starring role in his early Disney period, is a wonderful, comic farce. It has a terrific supporting cast, including the hilarious comedy team of Joe Flynn and Wally Cox, an early appearance by the late John Ritter, and a pleasing turn by Heather North as Russell's love interest. And then there's Russell's costar, a chimp who can predict hit TV shows, well-played by Bubbles. His "talent" comes in handy when ambitious mailboy Russell uses his predictions to get ahead at the television network he works at.In all, it's a funny farce that kids and their parents will enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, with mediocre music
I'm the only one here who thought this was a big bore - even the music wasn't much, I thought. One very good dance number, though. One of my film books says "it does drag a bit." It drags a lot. Glad I saw it on TV.
5-0 out of 5 stars Debbie Reynolds' best film
Many of us have considered "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" to be Debbie Reynolds' best film.It was first released in the summer of 1964 and was a big hit with audiences and critics, who recognized that it was a wonderful adaptation of Meredith Willson's Broadway musical. It was about the last musical made by MGM, where Debbie had made a number of musical films during the 1950's.

5-0 out of 5 stars WAVE RAVE!
Skirts Ahoy! is an engaging and wholesome film for the entire family. It has romance, comedy, big stars, music, and patriotism!
3-0 out of 5 stars One Spectacular Moment.....
This film contains the single attempt of MGM to bring Billy Eckstine to the silver screen, though the plot line stalls and the dialogue is silly, Mr "B" delivers a true knockout punch in his scene as a night club singer. His appearance onsreen equals majesty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skirts Ahoy
First saw this movie while in WAVE Boot Training, Fall 1952, at Bainbridge NRTC. How we laughed at what was supposedly bootcamp! My fondest memory, the talent show, with the songline "You Gotta give me Water, 'Cause a Whole lot of water makes a WAVE!" A fun reminder of those days. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dramatic portrait!
Paul Tibbets-Enola Gay both names that mean part of the history. This is an absorbing subject, carefully handled about the officer who piloted and drooped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
5-0 out of 5 stars A stunning movie
Though I could have seen this movie as a 10 year old when it first came out, I didn't, and was even unaware of its existence. But by chance I caught it yesterday on a cable movie channel.I was stunned by its power. The final scenes of Hiroshima on fire were especially powerful.(Even though I knew the Enola Gay didn't actually hang around to observe, I accepted the artistic license, as the scene "felt" right.)Since I grew up in the 1950s, I wasn't troubled by the acting or by the movie being in black and white. And if you want to see scenes involving B-29s, there sure are lots of those here. This movie should be more widely known.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should've been called "Atomic Love Story"
I wouldn't have bought this movie for myself, but got it for my Dad's 75th birthday. Dad had fond memories of it from seeing it on the big screen in 1952.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, terrible quality DVD
