Wow I didnt think i would find this but i did. This actually came out before i was born but my parents taped it off of tv so my sisters and I would watch it almost everyday. I found the tape at my mothers house but it was damaged and seeing that its one of my best childhood memories i had to track down a copy

5-0 out of 5 stars i can't believe i found this movie!
I have been looking for this movie for a long time!Everytime I'd run across an "Alice" movie with actual actors, I'd scour the back to see if it was the one I was looking for.My cousins recorded it off tv when we were young and I fell in love with it!Like I said, I can't believe I found it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable fantasy classic ; )
Awesome movie overall!!.. this is the kind of movie that relax your mind after a hard day at work and gets you in a trip; just imagine if you can do what Alice do!!.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice
One of the classic Disney movies I remembered was the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Reading this novel gave me the same feelings I had in my childhood years watching the movie. I could be wrong but it seems to me that everything in the book was exactly like the movie. Alice was reading her sister's book and fell asleep under a tree. Then she woke up, saw a rabbit in clothes with a clock talking. She then followed the rabbit into this hole. After that she was in a never ending tunnel, which lead her to a strange world. Alice encounters many obstacles in the story and showed how she dealt with them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
In the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll a young girl with the name of Alice travels to a distant land that seems altogether and quite possibly unreal to her.The book starts off with Alice in the park with her sister. She has nothing to do as her sister is reading so when Alice sees a talking white rabbit scampering by, she doesn't hesitate to follow it.Following the rabbit leads her to a world she could have never dreamed of.This book can take you to magical places you would have never dreamed of.Through the use of Carroll's thorough descriptions and dramatic elements this book is sure to take you on one wild ride.I thought that the book was very well written and very interesting.I could really imagine what the characters look like and feel how Alice would have felt.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good adventure and lots of twists along the way. This book is for children and adults alike. As long as you have an imagination and a great sense of adventure you are sure to love this great tale of a girl and how she found herself in an imaginary world.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Childhood Favorite!
When I was eight years old, this version of Alice in Wonderland was aired on T.V.I thought I had watched the best movie ever at that time, and still, to this day, I have more fond memories of watching that movie than any other time in my life! The songs were beautiful!I can still sing the song Alice sang to the deer - "Why do people act as if they're crazy? Why to they behave the way they do? I have to say, this is one my favorite songs of all time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippen, DVD
I had just seen the show in Seattle and it was great to see Ben Vereen in the role of the lead player. I wish more broadway shows were on DVD's.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE SHOW???
Ok, this is by far the most pathetic taping of a show (although Sweeney Todd comes to a close second).Where is the show?!They cut out the "Glory" battle scene and just had the actors come out and look happy instead of creepy like they should when they do the slow-mo battle scene (that was not in the movie...).Also, where is "I Guess I'll Miss the Man?"That's a BEAUTIFUL song that was cut from the movie why? Also what about "Prayer for a Duck" and MANY others!!!This is by far the worst ladies and gentlemen and completely ruins the show created by Stephen Schwartz and the great Bob Fosse!
4-0 out of 5 stars PIPPIN, HIS LIFE AND TIMES
Pippin is the court jester of Broadway musicals. The story of a 9th Century son of a Roman king who seeks to find the meaning in his life is as casual as a troupe of travelling medieval entertainers, yet as entertaining as it's Broadway rock contemporaries; Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and even Rent. Great early '70's rock music with a heap of soul, (The Jackson 5 had a hit with Corner Of The Sky in 1972), and outstanding musical comedy performances by Tony winner Ben Vereen as the godlike omnipresent lead player, Chita Rivera as Pippin's scheming sex-brained mother, and Benjamin Rayson as the warring king. The late Bob Fosse coneived this musical based on a college project by composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Archaic but amusing.
This comedy/musical extravaganza, set mostly aboard an ultra-modern luxury liner, does not hold up as well as most of W.C. Fields' films. It is overlong and rather dull in spots, but several funny scenes (with Fields, of course) almost compensate.Surpringly, the best scene is that in which Bob Hope sings, for the first time, the song that has become indelibly associated with him for the past 63 years, "Thanks For the Memory".It is a duet with Shirley Ross, and it is done not as a funny novelty song, but as a poignant one.Worth seeing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ship race through icebergs, W.C. Fields at the wheel
This movie has it's good points. It was made with some special effects that may seem primitive by todays standards, but they work reasonably well and are not overdone. There is an animated splash of water that refuses togo back into the ocean and instead dances to the music. If it were in colorit would be considered a good video for MTV. W.C Fields is good as twobrothers. Bob Hope is adequate. Both have much better films. The best partof watching this is to see how our styles and standards have changed. WhenBob Hope was singing "Thanks for the Memory," I found myselflooking at the silly hat the girl who sang with him was wearing. Anotherfunny hat was worn by the lady opera singer. She even carried a spear whileshe warbled. Imagine 60 years from now when somebody reviews Garth Brookslatest video and finds themselves laughing at his crazy hat and thatmicrophone growing out of the side of his head. Styles change, but this isan okay movie with Fields in a flying motor scooter and Ben Blue doing amean Charleston. If you like dance numbers, Martha Raye does a fun andenergetic workout with some gymnastic style tosses. Bob is better in"Paleface," "Son of Paleface," "Fancy Pants,""Seven Little Foys," "Beau James" and any of the"Road" pictures. W.C. Fields was better in "The BankDick" and "My Little Chickadee." Tom Willett

4-0 out of 5 stars This movie is well acted and has wonderful songs
The Big Boadcast is with no doubt the best of the four broadcasts. It is splendidly acted with an all star cast.Buzz Fielding (Bob Hope) is a broadcaster on a ship trying to escape from his three ex-wives, with hisfinacee Dorothy Windham(Dorothy Lamour)Thanks for the Memory was firstsung here, and it is Bob Hope's first movie.Shirley Ross is a splendidCleo Fielding, and Martha Raye does a marvelous job as Martha Bellows thedaughter of S.B. 3-0 out of 5 stars A Revisitation to familiar scenes
It happens that I was actually in this film, as the pianist in the Jimmy Dorsey band.At the time it was filmed, back in 1943, I was a brash young kid of 26, and I guess I thought that I was pretty hot stuff. Our band was one of the most popular of the day, and we played at the top spots in the nation.4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting film from a fascinating period in history
I enjoyed this movie for the most part; however, I must say I enjoyed the book version of "Four Jills In A Jeep" (written by Carole Landis)a lot better. My one pet peeve about this film is that there weren't moremusical numbers; Dick Haymes has several, but the "Jills" areleft with just 1 number each! However it is interesting, and it is a truestory.Worth watching! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "We should have used our imaginations"
Skewering her real life role of a pin up girl, this 1944 movie stars Betty Grable as Lorry Jones a pretty and feisty young girl who works for the USO and is heading for Washington DC. Aboard the train, a conversation with friend Kay (Dorothea Kent) reveals that the pair isn't headed for the USO, but will instead take jobs as stenographers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Grable on DVD!
It's a shame that all the Fox musicals haven't been released on DVD, especially the gorgeous Technicolor titles featuring Alice Faye, Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda.
3-0 out of 5 stars Comment on commentary...
Listening to Richard Schickel's slow delivery will probaby put you to sleep although he does provide some interesting background information on some of the stars in the film.He states, correctly, that Joe E. Brown will probably be best remembered for his role in "Some Like It Hot."However, he mistakenly states that Tony Curtis was the "girl" for the Joe E Brown character when it was actually Jack Lemmon.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABBOTT & COSTELLO JOIN THE ARMY AIR CORPS - AND THE RESULTS ARE HILARIOUS
When a barnstorming stunt pilot decides to join the Air Corps, his two goofball assistants decide to go with him. Since the two are Abbott & Costello, the Air Corps doesn't know what it's in for.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE US ARMY AIR CORP (US AIRFORCE) WILL NEVER RECOVER
Arthur Lubin directs this FUNNY1941 Abbott & Costello vehicle. Bud and Lou with their stunt pilot friend Dick Foran enlist in the US Army Air Corp (now known as the US Airforce). The best highlight of thefilm is comdieanne Martha Raye who portrays twin waitress. 5 STARSagain to Mr. Lubin and the UNFORGETTABLEAbbott and Costello.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another A&C Winner--Plus Martha!
This rollicking comedy isn't as tight and inventive as the classic "Buck Privates" but it's still hilarious. But what helps this really zoom along is the marvelous Martha Raye. She portrays twinsisters--one quiet, demure, the other more like the realMartha--boisterous, funny, earthy. The highlights of this comedy is whenMartha sings and dances and one of the best rock numbers ever recorded isher finger-snapping "Big Foot Pete" number, with a terrificboogie-woogie beat. This number was nominated for an Oscar as best song.Martha has been nearly forgotten today but she should be reverred as one offilm's most endearing and talented stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jumbo
I first saw this movie as a little girl and can remember singing the songs from this movie to my parents. Doris Day at her funniest and most beautiful and I fell in love with the handsome Stephen Boyd.Martha Raye's performance is funny and entertaining and Durante is brilliant.A light and entertaining movie to just sit back and enjoy on a rainy afternoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars once again, the Wonder Circus is on parade...
BILLY ROSE'S JUMBO makes it's long-awaited DVD release. The movie was one of the last hig musical hurrah's from MGM, and it was also Doris Day's last movie musical role. She shines as Kitty Wonder, the bareback-riding queen of the Wonder Circus.
5-0 out of 5 stars great family entertainment
Doris Day shines in this extravaganza, which was to be her last big musical; she is flawless vocally, and the melodic score contains some of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's most loved songs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bing's best, but still okay...
Kind of a snoozy, disjointed comedy in which Bing Crosby plays a 1930s rodeo rider who ropes a society gal, and settles down in the wild West.Crosby's young and cute, but the film's plot is entirely deficient, and almost seems to have been made up on the fly. Look quick for a young Roy Rogers playing in the background during the big hoedown at the end; Martha Raye also debuts here as her typical man-hungry old maid. (Animal acting notes:check out the expression of the white horse Bing rides during a music number at the start -- hilarious! The bull he buys, named Cuddles, is kinda cute too.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Bing Could Play Anything- And Pretty Much Did!
Jeff Larabee (Bing Crosby)is a one track mind cowboy (mind stuck on his prize bull "Cuddles") until he meets up with the lovely Doris whom he knows as "Lois" (Frances Farmer). Classic story of mistaken identity, falling in love, and of course the happy ending.A fun, lighthearted film that will leave you smiling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Crosby! Pre-crack-up Frances! Raye's debut!
Perhaps no other star ever looked more uncomfortable on horseback than Bing Crosby does here. Frances Farmer is lovely but shows a surprising lackof chemistry with Bing. But it's Martha Raye, making her feature filmdebut, who steals every scene she's in. Director Taurog signed her up afterseeing her perform in a Hollywood nightclub during production. As with mostmusical comedies of the 1930s, forget about plot and just sit back andenjoy the performances. Look for a very young Roy Rogers as the cast enjoysa sing-along to Johnny Mercer's "I'm an Old Cowhand." Crosby,Raye, and Burns would team again in "Waikiki Wedding." Rayeintroduces the Sam Coslow tune that became her theme song, "Mr.Paganini/You'll Have to Swing It," and gets to do her classic drunkbit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane
When i watched pufnstuf the movie it was a trip down memory lane for me. I used to love the show as a kid growing up in the 1970's. The main drawcard for me was cute Jack Wild, what a cutie. I think the kids of today will love pufnstuf, it reminds us of the innocence of childhood. Enjoy the film.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Memory
H.R. Puffinstuff. What a memory!Jimmy was my first love.I absolutely adored him!I remember my parents taking me to the movies to see my favorite show made into a movie. I still have the comic book.Years ago I came across this movie on the Disney Channel and taped it.I was so excited you would have thought I hit the lottery!I couldn't wait to introduce Jimmy, Puffinstuf, and Witchipoo to my sons, now 13 and 15, who were toddlers at the time. They loved it!We watched and sang all the songs."Zap the world" was their favorite. No matter how many tapes they had on their shelf, it was always..."Please mommy...can we watch Puffinstuf???"To this day they still have the words to the songs memorized..."I found a friend in you...one who really can endure..." There are alot of positive messages in this film.It was obvious their budget didn't leave much room for extragavence...but who needed it???Watching the show is one of my fondest memories as a child growing up in the late 60's and 70's...and being able to share this movie with my children and seeing the smiles on their faces made me realize that simple pleasures are still within our grasp.Martha Raye and Mama Cass were wonderful in this movie. And if we admit it, everyone has a little "Witchiepoo" in them...you couldn't help but love the "ole bitty" and her "Vroom Broom"...What wonderful memories...what a wonderful time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for the memories
I have just seen this movie again in the last 2 weeks.I didn't purchase the tape but saw an old one that I recorded off the Disney channel years ago.The production value was of Saturday morning fare that was because that was the audience the show had at the time. The story was thin but it was worthwhile to see Billie Hayes play Witchiepoo. She was delightful. The songs were not forgetable as the Amazon review above states.I had the soundtrack when it came out in the 70's and when I heard them I remembered every word. Now that must have been pretty good. The songs haven't been heard in over 30 years and I still remember all the words. It was also great to see and hear Mama Cass sing "Different" If you saw this when it first came out and you have very young kids get this and watch it with them.A fun time forthe whole family. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Includes Some Of Raye's Best Scenes.
A fine example of screwball farce, SAILOR showcases the unique and variegated talents of irrepressible Martha Raye as one of a pair of Larkin sisters, each of whom is after one of a pair of U. S. Navy Brewster brothers, and the question soon arises as to which of the possible pairings will ensue. Paramount, developing a Bob Hope/Raye team, casts Hope in his third feature for the studio as Jim Brewster, with Jack Whiting as brother Walter, each angling for the glamourous one of the Larkins, Nancy (Betty Grable), a competition which began when all four were youngsters. Raye portrays Nancy's sister Letty, who has agreed to assist Jim in garnering her sister's affection in return for his aid in winning the heart of Walter who is ignorant of the machinations about him, none of which is terribly complex for what is, after all, a musical comedy. Raye performs one of the five Ralph Rainger/Leo Robin songs, as does Grable (with Whiting), but it is Letty's gorgeous legs that win for her first prize in a national photo contest, ironic in light of Grable's pinup popularity, due to her own shapely stems, with American fighting men during World War II. Walter eventually notices Letty because of her new celebrity status, and the usually rather rambunctious singing comedienne has an opportunity to show him why he is mistaken in preferring her sister. Of the three films which Raye and Grable made together, this is perhaps the most blithe, and a scene wherein Letty uses overmuch facial masking which hardens to her deliciously acted consternation, draws gales of laughter wherever the picture is shown. Although we find Hope playing second lead to Raye, he plays his part with his normal aplomb and his comedic timing is impeccable as always, although his ad libbing is minimal. Leroy Prinz is responsible for the interesting choreography, and a splendid novelty scene has Grable singing "What Goes On Here In My Heart" while dancing with a collection of eager-to-please partners. Clarence Kolb, as the commanding officer of the Brewsters, is impressive as ever, and Director Elliott Nugent is able to call upon his father J.C. to perform as the Larkins' sire. Consistent with the director's customary panache and rapid pacing, SAILOR offers many treats, musical and otherwise, with the important editing function neatly handled by the generally overlooked William Shea.
3-0 out of 5 stars ZANY SCREWBALL CORN.
This is a fairly entertaining musical farce which concerns a love triangle involving two pairs of siblings. Bob Hope and Jack Whiting are fellow officers in the Navy who meet Betty Grable and Martha Raye while on leave.Whiting falls for Grable, but Raye is smitten with Whiting, while Hope wants Raye and Whiting to get together so he can worm his way into Grable's good graces.Hope coaches Raye on how to get Whiting hooked, but nothing seems to happen until a photograph of Raye accidentally turns up in a "best legs" contest...Raye garners a lot of attention from the the picture and her loud, obvious yet entertaining personality finally wins over Whiting. The finale has Hope and Raye go down the aisle in a double wedding with Whiting and Grable.Raye is quite funny wearing a hardened facial mask which is hard to crack!

3-0 out of 5 stars Grable overshadowed by Raye's underpinnings!
Typical zany 30s comedy tailored to the talents of Bob Hope and Martha Raye.Martha plays a homebody who enters a cake-making competition, but inadvertendly a photograph of her legs is also sent with the cake!Guesswhat! Editorial Review

This blistering little black comedy was well ahead of its time when released in 1947. Originally, Orson Welles had wanted Chaplin to star in his drama about a French mass murderer named Landru, but Chaplin was hesitant to act for another director, and used the idea himself. He plays a dapper gent named Henri Verdoux (who assumes a number of identities), a civilized monster who marries wealthy women, then murders them (as we meet him, he's gathering roses as an incinerator ominously bellows smoke in the background) and collects their money to support his real family. The Little Tramp is now a distant memory, though this was the first film not to feature Chaplin's beloved creation. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars KILL A MILLION THEY CALL YOU A HERO; KILL ONE AND THEY KILL YOU
THe first scene filmed by Chaplin is the final execution scene in which he sums up the philosophy of the whole film and CHaplin's own pacifist philosophy. If we invade other nations to steal their oil, etc., and kill thousands of innocent bystanders, women and childrne in the process, why are we called heroic and patriotic, but if we delight some lonely old widows and fill their dreams and then relieve them of their sorrow in order to feed our suffering family, why are we a villian?
4-0 out of 5 stars HOORAY FOR RAYE!
When Chaplin set about to tell the tale of MONSIEUR VERDOUX, he wanted an actress for the role of the indestructible Annabella who could hold her own in the comedy department. He looked no further than stage/radio/movie star Martha Raye, who was known for her improvisational skills and was fearless when it came to comedy. Raye considered this the high point of her career, to have been chosen by the man she considered The Master as a co-star. Without exception, critics hail the rowboat scene when Verdoux is trying vainly to murder the obnoxious Annabella as the highlight of the film. Given the right director, Raye was matchless in comedy and also proved to be a capable dramatic actress in a precious few roles (Jumbo, The Gossip Columnist). Watch this film, if only to appreciate the comedy genius of Martha Raye. Oh, Chaplin ain't bad either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chaplin adrift in a dark and sinister world

3-0 out of 5 stars "B" MUSICAL LINKS ON- AND OFF-SCREEN LOVERS.
Never a consistent director, Raoul Walsh permits this collection of set-pieces to proceed in a disjointed manner as a means of showcasing Paramount contract players. The scenario is inordinately silly but provides substantial roles for Gracie Allen, Bob Hope, Martha Raye, Edward Everett Horton, John Payne, and Betty Grable. Hope's performance in BIG BROADCAST OF 1938 was reviewed very favorably by Damon Runyon, a friend of producer Lewis Gensler, who remembered the comedian from Broadway and vaudeville, and who is responsible for significantly enhancing Hope's part in COLLEGE SWING. Allen's ability for making communicable to audiences her giddy semantic high jinks is in full array, with her partner and husband George Burns serving, as is usual, as her straight man, as does Horton, but the talented comedienne nearly steals the film with her performance of an Irish jig, danced for no apparent reason at all. The 21-year-old Betty Grable, already a veteran of more than 30 films thanks to the studio contract system, performs with unalloyed enthusiasm and has an opportunity to display her hoofing, sometimes partnered by her first husband, Jackie Coogan. Lovely lyric soprano Florence George, well-known in opera and on radio, makes her cinematic debut, romantically paired with success opposite John Payne, and although her film career was very brief and not promoted, that could not have been due to her showing here. The committee responsible for this effort wisely decides to unbridle zany Martha Raye, as she irrepressibly dominates those scenes in which she appears and sings very well, indeed. Despite its low budget, the work benefits from excellent art direction, and plaudits must be handed to the outstanding costume design by Edith Head. In sum, COLLEGE SWING is only a minor attempt, but is laden with a cast of diverse abilities, which acts with carefree enthusiasm.
2-0 out of 5 stars Everybody Is In The "Swing" And Having A Good Time
"College Swing" was a movie I had high expectations for. I originally wanted to see it because of Bob Hope. Of course when I bought the movie and saw the rest of the cast which includes George Burns and Gracie Allen (Who actually get top billing!), Martha Raye, Edward Evertt Horton, Betty Grable, John Payne, and Jackie Coogan not to mention it was directed by Raoul Walsh well, just try and guess how high my expectations were now! And sadly it just doesn't live up to what it could of been.3-0 out of 5 stars DAFFY PARAMOUNT FLUFF
This is a pretty non-sensical little flick for enthusiasts of vintage corn! Gracie Allen is cast as the dumb-bell ancestor of a founder of a University. Whether she passes her exam or not will determine the future of the college. Burns and Allen are only okay here, given a mediocre script and not-too-funny situations (the one-joke theme loses its novelty quickly, unfortunately). Bob Hope is easily the best thing about the film, which isn't saying all that much, as his material is mediocre as well. The loud, obvious, sometime hilarious Martha Raye is at her most forced here, and there is ample support from Edward Everett Horton (he has a morbid fear of women but somehow succumbs to the - ah - charms of Gracie!) The cast includes a curvaceous 22 year-old Betty Grable (here she dances with her then real-life love Jackie Coogan who was Charlie Chaplin's THE KID in 1921 and Uncle Fester in THE ADDAMS FAMILY in 1964!) Richard Denning is also seen in this very mild, sometimes amateurish looking diversion from the era of Swing, which - in its day - was obviously aimed at young audiences. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A true offence to spectator' s intelligence!
This one of these pop corn films, with a hard to die script, that defies viewer's intelligence. A Concord that skillfully raffles all sort of aerial attacks without major inconvenient, supported by secondary plots that frankly have nothing to add; like islands in the middle of nowhere. We will watch to a solvent actor such George Kennedy, trying to make his best to save this horrid movie. An insipid role for the divine Goddess Silvia Kristel (Emanuelle), Alain Delon, cold and enigmatic.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Concorde has three difficult flights in one movie.
This is the fourth and the last in this series of "Airport" films.George Kennedy appears again as he has in all four films as "Joe Patroni".Brian Morrison makes a third appearence as "Joseph patroni jr.".Monica Lewis and Alan Fudge return too.
1-0 out of 5 stars They're sending the wrong movie!
I ordered Concorde (1979) starring Alain Delon and Susan Blakely, the 4rth Airport movie, from this page, as advertised, but they sent a 2000 documentary called Concorde.I sent it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute blast from the past
THE BUGALOOS was a TV institution in the early 70s, and now a whole new generation can fall in love with this classic series, with episodes now available on home video.5-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing like the bugaloos
Even for a Krofft show, the Bugaloos was different. Most Krofft shows focused on heroes who wanted to get home (i.e. Pufnstuff or Land of the Lost).A few others focused on heroes who were on the look out for excitement (wonderbug, Electra Woman and Dyna-girl).The Bugaloos, however, were happy where they were. They didn't go looking for excitement, all they wanted was tranquility. The desire to just be at peace and play beautiful music set the distinctive tone for the series.5-0 out of 5 stars Joy to the world? No. I want her just for myself!
These episodes are a lot of fun.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars JUST FOR HAWKS.
John Wayne narrates the lion's share of this documentary released in 1970 that has a specific purpose, i.e., to shift the opinion of the public to favour support of the U. S. war against North Vietnam and the Viet Cong during a time when America's cultural atmosphere was strongly antagonistic towards this country's involvement; unhappily for the individuals selected to offer their viewpoints, such as Generals Mark Clark and Albert Wedemeyer, journalist Lowell Thomas, and others, they stare straight into the camera's eye as they haltingly read their lines, detracting from their shared message, one that certainly includes salient points relative to politician interference with and control of our armed forces' efforts and the subsequent demoralization of servicemen; a yet greater reason for the production's eventual failure to persuade is its twisted view of historical events, replete with inaccuracy despite inclusion of captivating footage; in sum, an interesting cinematic document of a dramatic period in our nation's history.
1-0 out of 5 stars strange film, bad ideas
This is a vietnam film made by rabid anti-communist hawks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, little known documentary of the Vietnam War era
For some curious reason, the Vietnam War was largely absent from US cultural outlets like cinema, comic books, television shows, etc. even though it was one of the most important issues of the time.In the movies, only two films actually dealt with Vietnam as a primary focus when the war was still raging. The two were To the Shores of Hell (1964) and The Green Berets (1968).Both films were pro-US and pro-US involvement in Vietnam.Perhaps it was fitting that the fellow (John Wayne) involved with bringing to the silver screen the most well-known of the two Vietnam films (The Green Berets) was also responsible for the documentary that argued not only for the US effort in Vietnam but also for victory. In this film, Wayne calls upon several military veterans of the Vietnam War as well as generals who had experience with communist countries and communist enemies to make the point that the US has dealt with communist lands with kid gloves and hasn't had the political will to win in hot wars with them.To make this case, Wayne goes from the aftermath of WWII in showing how the US slowed down in taking territory and let the Soviets go into Berlin and Eastern Europe.(Incidentally, it is here where Wayne is on his weakest ground.)Admittedly, the US slow down allowed Stalin's USSR to plant the Red Banner further in the West. The US could've marched further east to make sure more people didn't fall under the communist banner. However, the US would have likely taken many more casualties, certainly more in taking Berlin which cost the Soviets about 500,000.Wayne makes a stronger case against the mistake of not supporting Chiang Kai-Shek in China against the communists as well as the insanity of bombing restrictions in the Korean War such as not bombing the Yalu River bridges, not hitting targets in China, etc.In Vietnam, Wayne makes a compelling argument that the "fighting with one hand tied behind the back" approach to was being used by the US.Many areas were placed off limits to US airpower and naval might such as Haiphong Harbor. On top of this, it is pointed out that the war was micromanaged from Washington and that targets had to be approved.(LBJ famously opined that the US couldn't "bomb an outhouse" without his approval.)This took time and sometimes the approval never came.Wayne further makes the overwhelming case that bringing the other side to the peace table cannot be done with bombing halts, only through massive strength. He has a former Korean War general to make this case and also points out that bombing halts didn't spur the North Vietnamese efforts for peace.(Indeed, Nixon in 1972 used city bombing to bring the North Vietnamese back to the peace table.)Overall, quite a bit of what the documentary warned about came to pass. After the US pull-out, Laos, South Vietnam, and Cambodia fell to the communists, and bloodbaths did result, especially in Cambodia with the deaths of 2 million people.Other predictions, though, (communist insugency in Australia, for example) did not.Far from Wayne having "blood on his hands" as some would say, Wayne accurately depicted communist aggression throughout the world and demanded from the US a will to win against it.Even with the technical problems that the film has, it still is an important piece of Cold War history. ...
