Editorial Review

The wonderful Leslie Caron stars in this Oscar-winning musical fable with a touch of the bizarre. Caron plays Lili, a recently orphaned waif hopelessly in love with a carnival magician. Mel Ferrer plays Paul, a gruff puppeteer who can express his softer side only through his puppets. Sound weird? It is. Caron's performance is lovely. She is, as always, a graceful dancer, but she is also able to pull off the much more difficult task of making Lili pure and innocent without being icky--shetalks to Paul's puppets with complete conviction. (The puppets, by the way, are incredibly creepy.) Younger viewers will take Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I could tell you all about this wonderful movie, but other reviewers have done such a great job.Just let me add one tidbit--the end contains what is probably the most hilarious screen kiss in history (although I'm sure it was meant to seem passionate).

5-0 out of 5 stars Give That Girl A Contract
How hard can it be to find a film with elements of homelessness, unemployment, despair, suicidal thoughts, thievery, feigned affection, disability and self-pity? Not very hard you say. But in a G-rated film barely eighty minutes long?
5-0 out of 5 stars Career High for Caron, Ferrer, and -- Zsa Zsa
Charles Walters is another, like George Sidney, another incredibly talented director whose 1950s work has been for too long overshadowed by his MGM competitors Cukor, Donen and Minnelli.Walters isn't nearly as flashy as these guys, but where it counts, he's got it all, and as a choreographer, he can design dance films in a way that eluded these other non-dancers.LILI isn't a musical per se, though years later it inspired the memorable Bob Merrill score for CARNIVAL, but it has more than enough music to qualify it as the kind of picture you leave the theater whistling the tunes from. And in Leslie Caron they found the right blend of wistfulness and innocence; even her mouth looks bruised, but her eyes light up whenever she sees her darling puppets.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fred Astaire as sexual predator.
Overall as musicals go, this is ok, but I was very uncomfortable with Fred Astaire acting like a sexual predator. The way he aggressively approached and man handled Audrey was atrocious.

4-0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore!
If you've only heard about FUNNY FACE, you really owe yourself to SEE it with your own eyes for the first time - and now that you can buy the DVD at Target for like $5 clams, why not? There are many great old-school "Golden Age" musical numbers on display here, from THINK PINK to BONJOURS PARIS (filmed in various locales around the City of Lights, sorta like a fashion-magazine inversion of ON THE TOWN), and especially the cool-cat beatnik dance number Hepburn does in the bohemian bar - *you'll note that THE GAP recently used clips from this celebrated sequence in their "Skinny Black Pant" ads set to, of all things, Back in Black by AC/DC! - but here is the original, and it's sublime - you are amazed how expertly Audrey hoofs it up in gay Paris! The direction is flawless, especially several auteur touches, like the stop-motion photographer during the Givenchy outdoor photoshoot, and the one dance sequence in Astair-cum-Avedon's photo darkroom only lit by one tiny red bulb...now that's TECHNICOLOR! While the films' gender politics have dated, this was filmed in a different era and much more conversative sensibility, so cut the movie some slack. This is a gorgeous, timeless musical that could use a contemporary update by a major studio - hello?!

Audrey Hepburn is perfect for this movie and I enjoyed it very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rabbit Almost Stole the Movie!
I don't want to repeat what all the other reviewers have said.I know that when I went to see this movie when it first came out ( yes, I am "that" old ) I didn't have too much hope of it being a good movie.I mean it was Jerry Lewis without Dean Martin! How good could it be?Well turns out it was an excellent movie with an excellent performance by Jerry Lewis.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Movie Has Magic!
Although Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made a great team, this movie, The Geisha Boy, shows Jerry's true talent solo.4-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem of Jerry Lewis; A Japanese Fan Can Testify
Owing to Eddie Murphy remake, "The Nutty Professor" comes to our mind first as Jerry Lewis's most representative work, but it also tends to overshadow his other neglected gems, one of which is here, "The Geisha Boy."Despite its now corny title, the film has still a lot to offer for our laugh.Read more

Editorial Review

Jan Morrow (Doris Day) and Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) have never met, but they're sworn enemies because of one small appliance in their lives: the telephone. The two share a party line, and Jan is outraged over the amount of time Bill spends wooing women over the phone. A convenient triangle emerges when a client (Tony Randall) of Jan's--she's an interior decorator--falls in love with her and happens to be Brad's old college chum. When Brad makes the connection, he decides to try to court Jan himself, to make her more sympathetic to his phone woes. Of course, she'd never go for such a heel, so he passes himself off as Rex Stetson, a Texas rancher visiting New York. The ensuing tale, albeit predictable, is lots of fun, with some quick-witted dialogue and some clever use of split-screens for the phone calls.Thelma Ritter is hilarious as Jan's always-hung-over maid, Alma; and the pairing of Rock and Doris works beautifully, as always. This film is enjoyable and Doris Day and Rock Hudson are very good together.Add Tony Randall and you have a film with lots of laughs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated Froth
A predictable pile of doo doo.I can appreciate good acting but the acting has to have a story attached to it.This movie is nothing more then a bunch of stupid scenes with Miss Day at the centre. The story line is so thin it's barely visible. The acting while good really doesn't jell together and one is left wondering just what they are talking about.I guess it's a favorite for fans of old films like my partner is but oh God I had to fight to stay awake to get through it.A flimsy forgettable pile of fluff which sends social progress back to the dark ages.Just plain stupid in my opinion.I can't believe it was that successful when it first was released.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Cute and Charming Movie Should Be On DVD! And The Other Tammy Movies Should Also Be On DVD!
I saw the original Tammy movie that starred Debbie Reynolds as Tammy and I loved that movie and Debbie Reynolds was great as Tammy the backwoods country girl who fell who was taken in by a wealthy family after her moonshiner grandpa was arrested and fell in love with the son of the family Pete played by Leslie Nielsen but I loved this remake too and I think Sandra Dee was absolutely adorable as Tammy who has moved in to the city and become a nurse and fell in love with a doctor played by Peter Fonda who was also very good. Yes it's a bummer that they turned Pete into a scmuck in this movie and had him dump Tammy and break her heart but I still liked this movie and I would like to see this and all of the other movies in the Tammy series to be put on DVD. Tammy and The Bachelor, Tammy Tell Me True, Tammy and The Millionaire. I habe never vseen Tammy In The Millionaire though but I do know that another actress besides Sandra Dee and Debbie Reynolds played Tammy in that one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Old-Time Movie From About 40 Years Ago
This is one of the two best Tammy movies. It stars Sandra Dee and Peter Fonda, in his film debut. This movie has wonderful country charm and a look at hospitals, doctors & nurses as they existed in a simpler time 40 years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Second Best of the Tammy Movies
Debbie Reynolds was hard to follow up after her success as Tammy Tyree in "Tammy and the Bachelor."However, Sandra Dee had modest success as Tammy in "Tammy Tell Me True" and its sequel, "Tammy and the Doctor."

5-0 out of 5 stars Sirk and Thoreau
All That Heaven Allows is my favourite Sirk film. All his characteristic stylistic trademarks are present: high contrast lighting; precise, tight framing; expressive colour; and frequent use of reflected images and domestic interiors framed through objects like screens and windows that suggest confinement and entrapment. Sirk is dealing here with lives repressed by social conventions and projections of surface respectability.
5-0 out of 5 stars Style and substance
One of the single most influential films to come out of the 1950s world cinema, ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS is probably Douglas Sirk's masterpiece, realizing most perfectly his notion of combining middle-class melodrama with exquisitely glossy and perfectly framed screen compositions. It's one of the least campy of his films (though it does have its satisfyingly ridiculous moments here and there--pay attention to the sudden appearance of the deer in the last scene), and he was able to coax a fine performance from his star Jane Wyman, who manages to anchor the emotionally overwrought screenplay by projecting true feeling. The film's plot is operatic, but its also incredibly obvious and heavyhanded: a well-to-do New England widow (Wyman) falls in love with her handsome individualistic gardener twenty years her junior (Rock Hudson), and thus incurs the wrath of her children and the contempt of the country-club set. That's it, but Sirk pumps everything with so emotion that the story might as well be lifted from Homer or Virgil, and so people have seen the film as much more meaningful than any surface reading of it could possibly allow. In many ways, the film is all about how surfaces can be allowed a totalizing power that comes to substitute for depths. Although ostensibly the film trumpets a rejection of mid-century American materialism in favor of the rugged individualism Hudson's character champions, the form of the film constantly tells us that things are lovely and people are not (at the film's conclusion, Hudson's character signals his love for Wyman's widow by transforming an old deserted mill into the kind of fussy, beautifully chosen interior that might be showcased in a homes magazine). And no male actor has ever seemed more to embody the appeals of surface beauty than Rock Hudson, with his titanic handsomeness, mellifluous speaking voice, and underreactiveness. Had Hudson been paired with another Sirk female star like Lana Turner the whole thing might have lapsed into sheer ridiculousness; but Jane Wyman manages to bring something to the film that causes everything to hold together. The great scene where she is given the television set at christmas has been justly celebrated, but she may be at her finest in the lovely scene where she comforts her distraught daughter (Gloria Talbott, who does much with an otherwise awful part). This film has been enormously celebrated by later directors, including Fassbinder and Todd Haynes (both of whom have made their own films that pay tribute to this) and Tarentino and Scorsese.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The mass of men live lives of quiet desperation,"
This gorgeously melodramatic potboiler was made in the mid-50's just as Jane Wyman's star power was waning and Rock Hudson was becoming a superstar. But All That Heaven Allows is most memorable as a study of small town intolerance, now it's portrayal of a world that is mostly picture perfect - at least for the inhabitants of Stonington, Connecticut where the movie is set - comes across as rather quaint.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please give this movie the DVD treatment!
I know I would give this film an even higher rating if it was ever brought to DVD with a widescreen presentation. There are so many scenes in this film where the actors heads are cut in half(vertically) and so many spectacular shots of Japanese vistas that having this film seen only on VHS(fullscreen) is actually a felony in the history of color filmmaking. That aside, the story is a comedy laced with genuine drama and fantastic character acting from both Shirley MacLaine and Bob Cummings surrounding the filming of "Madame Butterfly" at authentic Japanese locales.Fans of Yves Montand will not be disappointed for he brings a surprising range of emotions from one scene to the next, alternating between witty banter(particularly with Bob Cummings) to gripping heartache near the end of the story. The supporting cast is solid, led by veteran actor Edward G. Robinson in a role that is a far cry from his "Little Caesar" days. One of my few complaints lies in the fact that once in a while a Japanese extra will scowl at Shirley MacLaine when she is portraying her Geisha character with a little too much stereo-type.I certainly don't blame them for cringing once in a while. It would be like a young Japanese man portraying a Redneck Cowboy in front of a crowd of extras from Texas. However, Shirley MacLaine nails this role down pat after a few scenes early in the film where first-time director Jack Cardiff probably should have gone for another take. There are a couple of scenes that look too staged to be believed, while later in the film there are some excellent scenes with fantastic acting from all concerned.Once in a while there is also some voice-over dubbing that doesn't quite match the lip-movement.There are a few other scenes that suggest that Jack Cardiff was once a stage director at one time, such as: instead of having a split-screen effect and editing the actor's voices in later, the whole set is cut in two with a thin partition separating the action on either side as the actors do their scenes on the telephone. It makes for a great live effect that feels kinetic and touching .A while back, say ten years ago, I was in a Shirley MacLaine-fan mode and I rented everything I could find with her in it.I saw "The Apartment" and I thought she was the cutest actress I had ever seen, yet she had more emotional range than I had initially anticipated.I was subsequently thrown for a loop.I rented "My Geisha" in the hopes of seeing more stellar work from her, and in all seriousness I am surprised she was not nominated for the Oscar for this role. She plays two different characters, she is comedic, she cries, she sings, and she is absolutely gorgeous dressed as Geisha Yoko-Mori.As for the comedy in this story, Bob Cummings rules the roost here inducing full-throated chuckling on my part through the use of witty dialogue and his understated, under-rated physical comedy. This film has plenty in it to recommend it whole-heartedly: comedy, romance, wit, glorious photography, oftentimes inspired direction from Jack Cardiff, and four great lead performances mixed with some solid work from the supporting cast. Now if they'd only release this little gem on DVD my collection would reach one step closer to perfection.Take it easy...and don't jump into any volcanoes!Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great two hours of fun
I never would have noticed this movie if it hadn't been for me catching it on Cinemax. Well the movie was great and i plan on buying the video or dvd of this to watch it over and over again. Shirley McClaine's potrayal of Lucy is so fun to watch and I am slowly getting to rediscover the classic movies. This is certainly among my favourites. She looks so believingly like a Japanese Geisha girl. The movie certainly touches your heart towards the end. Do certainly buy it or rent it. Don't miss it...

5-0 out of 5 stars An old story, never portrayed better
Paul Robaix (Yves Montand) is a top notch movie maker. The only problem is that every one attributes his success to his actress wife (Shirley MacLaine.) To prove himself, he sets out for Japan to do a remake of `Madame Butterfly', with out his wife's participation. Read more

I have always loved this movie, of course I have always been a Jerry Lewis fan.I have never been to crazy about Dean Martin and his singing but I guess without him in some of these movies Jerry wouldn't have been so funny.Even though Jerry carries himself well without Dean in alot of movies. My kids love Jerry Lewis now! This one is the best one that they made together in my opinion!Very funny!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good performance
Really really like the paratroopers dancing around Dean Martins Singing. It's like where they left off on At war with the army. I would buy these two movies together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin/Lewis' best film together (I think so, anyway)
Watch this movie and look around the jump towers at Fort Benning and you'll SEE NO BUILDING 4 INFANTRY HALL which wasn't built until 1964! One thing we should remember about films like this, though they be comedies, they are often filmed on location, with help from the U.S. Army and in so doing, they capture rare moments (like a jump tower mound with no Building 4 behind it!) that are lost forever. For example, at the film's end you see Martin/Lewis take part in a mass tactical parachute jump where you see C-82 aircraft with their rear clam shells removed to airdrop jeeps and artillery pieces...this footage alone makes this video worthwhile....where else can you find it?Read more

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Fun
I had never seen this film before purchasing it, but took a chance that I would like it as much as everything else I have seen with Doris Day; I wasn't disappointed. Doris Day and James Garner were great together, it left me wishing that they had made more films together. I had expected it to be cute and fun but I didn't think I would be laughing so much! If your a fan of Doris Day or James Garner then you really can't lose with this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Feel Good Comedy Movie!
The Thrill Of It All is one of my favorite movies and at a tie with Pillow Talk as my favorite #1 Doris day movie and I think this is a very charming cute movie and what I think as a great feel good movie to watch when you are sick or feeling a little down in the dumps! Doris Day and James Garner are great and the kids are really cute, especially Kym Kareth who is famous for playing little Gretel Von trapp in the movie The Sound Of Music.

If you love music and especially old standards, then you will love this movie. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Jeanie" meets the "Genie"
Before Barbara Eden played a Genie on the home screen, she played the fiance of a man (Tony Randall) who had a Genie. This film is a lot of fun to watch. The Genie (played by Burl Ives) tries everything to please his master, but to no avail. All of his good works turn into problems. This is a light-hearted comedy which should be reproduced for public viewing. We all need a laugh now and then (especially now!).And this film will fill the bill. Encourage the video and DVD makers to bring back "The Brass Bottle".

4-0 out of 5 stars Cinematic Jerry
"The Ladies Man" (1961) survives as a dazzling vehicle for Jerry Lewis' filmmaking virtuosity. A decidedly thin premise (girl-shy Jerry unknowingly takes a job at an all-female boarding house) becomes a showcase for some of Lewis' most audacious camera work. The lavish interior set is a stunning creation and Jerry's cartoonish sight gags are among his best. Transferred from an excellent 35mm print, the DVD edition includes plenty of extras and a commentary track by Lewis and Steve Lawrence.

4-0 out of 5 stars What can i say....its jerry lewis....
Here is another Jerry Lewis production that i have'nt seen for
1-0 out of 5 stars Please, stop the DVD and put me out of my misery
I've heard a theory why the French supposedly love Jerry Lewis. Their anti-Semitism is flattererd by seeing an obviously Jewish man act like such a total bumbling idiot. It's the same reason the Klan loved Amos 'n Andy and other stupid black characters back in the day. Let's put it on the table: Notwithstanding the untold millions he's raised for charity, on screen Jerry Lewis is an annoying, self-inflated, no-talent hack. He can't write and he can't direct. His movies are a mess of boring scattershot antics. He confuses mugging like a drunken ape for acting. Okay, The Nutty Professor was somewhat watchable (for Stella Stevens alone) and his blubbering on the MDA telethon back in the 1970s was pretty amusing. But the rest of the Lewis catalog is cinematic root canal. This horrible movie is no exception. In the commentary, we're supposed to be impressed that the Ladies Man set cost almost $1 million in 1960 dollars and took up two sound stages on the Paramount lot. We're supposed to be impressed that Lewis was the first director in Hollywood to attach a video camera for instant playback. We're supposed to be impressed that he constructed 30 dressing rooms for his female cast. We're supposed to be impressed that he hired a company to build a special crane to maneuver the camera around the gigantic set. We're supposed to be impressed that Lewis, the auteur, was seemingly in control of every aspect of this production. Fine, Jerry. But what matters is what ends up on the screen. Screaming, inane, badly timed, unfunny, dragged-out scenes that stumble one into another and go nowhere don't make a movie, no matter how many carpenters it took to build the set. (I could barely lay eyes on the kitschy set where Lewis delights in removing the fourth wall.) Perhaps it was his personal guilt over earning a fortune making fun of disabled people with mental and muscular afflictions that drove Lewis to his charities. It's a character that has been a trademark, but he doesn't play it well. Lewis is not stupid, and he doesn't play a moron well. He's shrill, grating, and obvious, and as director and writer there's no one around to tell Jerry to tone it down and yell "Cut!"He's over-the-top with it, and he's not believable. The movie stinks from the opening credits. At a graduation at his junior college, Lewis spies his girlfriend sitting on a bench. Suddenly she's kissing a rugged football player. Lewis is heartbroken. A funny scene would be the nebbish Lewis confronting the giant football player and demanding the girl choose between the two. (Think how Woody Allen would have handled it.) Instead Lewis falls in some bushes and has an attack of muscular dystrophy. It's a case study in his narcissism. Then he whines back to his parents and in typical Lewis fashion, we see Lewis in complete drag as an ugly woman. It goes down the toilet from there. For some real laughs, put on The Three Stooges or Laurel & Hardy--real pros--and leave Jerry to babble about his genius and how the Francophiles worship the ground he stumbles on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars what can i say but one of the best
i think that anyone would love this movie it is so funny and i will watch it over and over again

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest movie of all time.
Chaplin.Tati.Lewis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jerry , the amazing one-man band
Defined in the opening credits as the visual diary of several weeks in the life of a bellboy this experimental comic film, acclaimed by Chaplin himself, was the debut of Jerry Lewis into film direction. Also produced, written and performed by Lewis and shot in black and white the film is a collection of stylished and imaginative sight-gags, that sometimes borde on the surreal humour of cartoon and where the camerawork and the soundtrack have often so much protagonism as the the actors, focused in a common stage: the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach. But " The bellboy " is also an intelligent and sensitive homage to slapstick ( and in a special way to the person of his beloved friend Stan Laurel ) and the world of the clowns. Lewis figures here in two different roles: as Jerry himself ( in what's a funny parody of his day-life as hollywood celebrity ) and as the talkativeness and sometimes too much diligent bellboy of the title.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was this trip necessary?
Draggy family comedy about Americans on vacation abroad wasn't anywhere near top-drawer Disney when it was first released back in 1962--trite, unfunny and decidely kid-unfriendly with its tiresome bickering parents, dreary teen romance subplots and several bizarre un-Disneylike scenes involving drunkeness, a bidet,a French hooker, public urination and even a few mild four-letter words.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good family movie.
I love the old movies and Fred McMurray so I enjoyed this though I do think it was longer than it needed to be.I love him lost underground. If you are not into old movies and Disney flicks you probably won't enjoy this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Classic Disney
As a child of the 60s I love the old, classic Disney comedies that were released back then. This movie had potential to be one of them, except for a few shortcomings. First, it's WAY too long. Secondly, the sub-plots with the teenage children almost ruin the breezy feel of the movie, turning to heavy-handed soul searching between a lost youth and the Willard family. His presence literally ruins their long-awaited trip to Europe. He follows them everywhere - tell the mixed-up creep to scram! But the musical score is great, very kitschy 60s, and Fred MacMurray is always the wonderful father-figure. This is a good movie, but too bad Disney let it drift away with too many sub-plots and a script that was just too long.Plus, I counted some "damns" and quite a bit of drinking - not very Disneyesque. But for adults, worth a look on a rainy Sunday afternoon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love at its Best!
This is one of the most romanticly sweet movies I have ever seen. The chemistry between Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Parks makes you truly believe that they are in love and that it can't get any better. Larry Parks is so handsome and such a wonderful actor... this movie shows vulnerability and charm, wit and sex appeal. Elizabeth Taylor is absolutely gorgeous and plays the lovestruck teenager gracefully. This is a great movie... for all comedy, romance, and movie lovers... Its a shame that there aren't more films with the wonderful Larry Parks... he steals the show... and my heart. This picture makes you believe in love... and if not... makes you want to...

3-0 out of 5 stars LIGHT ROMANTIC COMEDY AT ITS LIGHTEST!
This film cannot be separated from its history. It was filmed several years before it was finally released, and originally titled "The Light Fantastic."The reason for the delay was the sad fact that, coming from his big hits in the two films on Al Jolson, soon after this film was completed, its star, Larry Parks, was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and was blacklisted. He never made another film, but became a businessman.5-0 out of 5 stars one of taylor's best overlooked films
this movie was wonderfully romantic. Often people only associate ElizabethTaylor with bigger box office winners, but this movie was surprisinglygood. It's a very funny movie, I especially love the scenes with Lizteaching the children to dance. If you havent seen this movie, see it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better than what the critics stated
I just recently purchased this movie--I remember looking at on tv, when I was a kid, and I did enjoy it then, and I enjoyed it even better now, since I was now looking at it in color!!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Old Time Story that will melt your heart.
I have a sentimental place in my heart for this movie. My mother and I used to watch it late night--black and white--many years ago--and cry everytime at the touching parts. 3-0 out of 5 stars If You Knew Eddie.....
After having read several negative reviews for "The Eddie Cantor Story" I was hesitant to purchase this video but I felt, "what the heck" and did. I am glad I did as I enjoyed this biography, due in no small part to Keefe Brasselle's energetic portrayal of "The Apostle of Pep". One of the inherent problems I have found with Hollywood biographies is the desire on the part of the studios to sacrifice facts for what they believe to be great storyline. While this may have been true in this case I nonetheless enjoyed watching Mr. Brasselle entertain me with his spirited recreation of Mr. Cantor's routines. For those of us too young to have had the pleasure of seeing Eddie Cantor perform on stage this will be the best chance of doing so. ... Read more
