    Editorial Review

Environmentally friendly animated film with a strong message that doesn't club anyone over the head--but it certainly can't be missed. Zak (voiced by Christian Slater) is a heavy-machine operator whose job is to push over any vegetation in his path. He's shrunken to wee size, however, when Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy of the forest, not only finds him cute but wants him to see the results of his handiwork. They end up battling Hexxus, an evil force imprisoned in a tree, which now wants to destroy all of Ferngully. Robin Williams offers genuine comic relief as a bat named Batty Koda. Agreeable without making much impact, it's a piffle of a film for one that deals with such strong subject matter.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferngully is relevant even t oday......
With our world so much in trouble this "kiddie" movie is still as relevant today as when it was made, even more so...we really should be careful how we treat where we live and this movie reminds me to be aware of what's going on. I loved this movie and even as an adult, it was highly entertaining and thought provoking......

    3-0 out of 5 stars I agree
I agree with the last reviewer. When I saw this as a young child, the character of Hexxus scared me too.It really left a fairly permanent impression on my brain.Another such movie that freaked me out was The Secret of NIMH.You should at least watch this movie with your children instead of using it as a babysitter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nightmare inducing film for no ages...
When I was a small girl of six, I saw the film Fern Gully in the theater and it scared me sh...uh...poopless!! It was an OK flick up until the horrific smog monster appeared, killing all nature and singing about acid rain and sucking all living creatures dry and spitting them out like spinach!!! This movie traumatized me and gave me nightmares for at least a year or two!! This movie is a nightmare ride and if you REALLY want to show your kids a movie with a message about preserving the environment and living in harmony with nature, you'd be better off with Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky" than with this film. That is, unless you want your kid to be scared for life... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great film - restoration needed
I had only seen this film I think once before the 1993 remake was released, and the latter was the version I grew up with.I never realized how great a film the 1949 original really was until I rediscovered it when it aired on TCM on Christmas Eve two or three years ago. What a beautiful and extraordinary film!Although its obviously confined to soundstages at MGM Studios, the film more than makes up for that in its cast and cinematography. The majority of this film is shot in Black and White (which by 1949 had virtually become taboo at MGM).Note well the use of Technicolor in some of the garden sequences.Apparently MGM wanted to keep these Technicolor scenes a secret, as the Technicolor credits do not appear until the end of the film, although it is advertised in the theatrical trailer (which can be seen on the Warner Bros. DVD release of the 1993 version of GARDEN).And the score by Bronislaw Kaper (who later composed for the Warner Bros. film "Auntie Mame") is fabulous too.All the cast turn in very praiseworthy performances.Dean Stockwell as Colin and Margaret O'Brien as Mary are fabulous. The supporting cast all deserve praise as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC FOR ALL AGES !!!
This is a PERFECT movie for movie lovers of ALL AGES......
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite film as a child
This is really not a review, but an experience I'd like to share. One year, while living in Los Angeles, a friend surprised me for my birthday by taking me to a "revival theater" to see this film. When the movie ended, the lights went up and someone announced that there was a special guest in the audience. That special guest was Margaret O'Brien, who was seated in the row directly behind me.What a thrill to see Miss O'Brien in person and to hear about her experiences as a child actress, in this film and in others. My friend had known about Miss O'Brien's "impending appearance," but didn't tell me.A birthday evening I will forever cherish. For 92 glorious minutes, I was that little 8-year-old once again...watching this film for the very first time. But this time, as I watched Margaret O'Brien on celluloid, she was seated just a whisper away.

2-0 out of 5 stars Corny, predictable, contrived, and deceptive (in portraying New York.) I love it!
First, let me say that by quality film standards this is a terrible movie, in many respects. I live to walk on videos of this type with football cleats. But, this movie falls into the "I hated this movie so much, I couldn't help but watch it whenever it was on" category. And now I love it. I don't know what it is about this movie. I tried to put my finger on it many times. I always have and always will hate "Sleepless in Seattle," which is a totally contrived load of crap. But "You've Got Mail" has an undefinable charm to it that forces you to look past it's simplified portrayal of a happy go lucky, skip around the neighborhoods of New York atmosphere. It makes you question why you buy into such sappy dialogue and situations. It's not just because of the Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks chemistry, because I hated the despicable "Sleepless in Seattle" and always thought the entire premis of "Joe Versus the Volcanoe" was a joke. But in this movie, contrived as it may be, that interplay between the two works. Though their acting is also hammy at best, I also love the contributions of Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Stephen Zahn and Jean Stapleton. This is one of my guiltiest pleasures. I'll only watch it with the remote on toggle to some type of sports programming in case my friends walk in on me while I'm watching it so I can jump inmmediately to the "Binford Lumberjack Finals," or something like that. But were they to walk in at the end of this movie and find me glossy eyed with a lump in my throat, I'd never hear the end of it. I love this movie. There! I admit it.!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I absolutely love this movie. Hanks and Ryan have so much chemistry together and the story is so adorable. I have watched this movie so many times and love it more every time!

This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... This is truly one of the best baseball movies of all time. Humor, love, social issues of the era. It's got it all.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best movies take forever to get to DVD
Anybody who claims that "Bull Durham" or "The Natural" is the greatest baseball movie ever made, has obviously never seen this early gem from HBO pictures. But I have seen it and it is the best baseball movie ever made. It's bawdy, rowdy, belly-laugh hilarious AND it's about baseball. It doesn't take itself too seriously and everyone has a grand time. It also says a lot about a movie when you care more about the characters than whether or not the film has a happy ending. (Anyone who's seen it know what I mean.) But, alas, my VHS is worn out and I DON"T HAVE A VHS PLAYER ANYMORE!!!!! But 2007 will be it's 20th anniversary; I'll probably have to wait until then...Sigh.....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Underdog Story
"The Karate Kid" could have been 80s drivel, a nonsensical teen movie with very little redeeming qualities. Fortunately, "Kid" rises far above that, being not only an underdog story like "Rocky" (also from director John Avildsen)but also a companionship story and a bit of a love story.Rumor has it that the screenwriter wrote the script after seeing an article in the local paper about a teenage boy who defended himself against bullies by taking karate.A very simple concept, and yet one that works for several reasons.First, everyone can relate to the underdog story.Daniel's discomfort over moving away from home (New Jersey) to go across country to California, at a very crucial time in his life (high school) is not foreign to any of us.All of us have been in this position, in some form, at one time or another.Daniel is desperate to fit in, in a place where as a darkheaded Italian, he sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb around blonde Californians.A bit stereotypical, yes, but effective. The girl of his dreams is blonde and he meets her on the beach. His arch-nemesis is blonde, "hunky" in the teen sense, wealthy and does all the right things. The complete opposite of Daniel, who rides a bike and whose mom drives an old olive green station wagon with the embarrassing habit of stalling in wealthy neighborhoods. With so much stacked against him, we want Daniel to win.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love this movie
This is one of my favorite movies ever.I saw this movie in the theater when I was ten and twenty years later I still love it.Great 80's music too.

3-0 out of 5 stars What Dubyac99 Said
Looking for a family movie to add to the DVD collection, I recalled The Karate Kid. The young boy, the mentor, wax-on/wax-off and some Karate for excitement. Turns out our memory of this movie is 30 minutes of Pat Morita scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Cinematic Musical
I haven't seen a cinematic musical so finely crafted and enjoyable since Singing in the Rain--Chicago is outstanding! Set in its namesake during a female murder spree, the costumes, sets, and atmosphere are right on target. The acting, singing, and dancing are so good chills will run down your spine. Renee Zellewegger is particularly inspired as Roxie, reminding me keenly of Marilyn Monroe. Queen Latifah and the remainder of the cast are equally up to the challenge, bringing Bob Fosse's musical to the screen in all its dark, glamorous glory.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE CAT'S MEOW
If you are an adult who absolutely cannot tolerate what might be called "a really cute movie", then you must at all costs avoid STUART LITTLE.However, if you're either (a) an adult who can't resist such cuteness; or (b) a cat owner who loves watching cats talk, then STUART LITTLE is right up your alley!!M. Night Shamalayan (Sixth Sense, The Village) of all people is the co-writer of this whimsical adaptation of E.B. White's classic book. While the humans are insufferably coy, the animals are the true stars of this film.Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie (House, Flight of the Phoenix) ooze paternal bliss as Stuart's adopted parents, while Jonathan Lipnicki is the epitome of kid cuteness, but it's Michael J. Fox as Stuart; Nathan Lane as Snowbell, and Chazz Palmineteri, Steve Zahn, Jennifer Tilly and the other "voices" that provide the pizzazz for this movie. The wizardry of the special effects teams gives these animals life and personality, and they're just as delightful as the talking animals in "Babe."The movie's focus on heart and family is uplifting and it just provides a ninety minute cute experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the book?!!!??
I have a couple of reasons why this is bad:
3-0 out of 5 stars Big budget nonsense!
This movie was like watching a weird cartoon where utter nonsense is accepted as normal. Reminded me of Space Jam where seeing cartoon characters and space ships landing on ball fields are accepted as no big deal. This movie may have worked better as a cartoon but I think it failed miserably as a movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Movie Ever Made!!!!!!!!!!
I am completly OPSESSED with this movie!! So far, I've seen Titanic 8 times, and I have never got tired of it!! This movie deserves 5 or more stars because it has perfect actors, perfect theme song, and the best effort on a movie in years. This movie is way better than those crapy movies that my little brother's opsessed with, like Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, and all that garbage. I have a huge crush on Leonardo Di Caprio, and I always kiss him on my poster. I also have him on my desktop on my computer. Whoever hates this movie is a complete Retarded jerk, and needs to get a life. I am so excited because in my chorus class, were singing My Heart Will Go On, and I am so excited!! All I'm saying is, great job James Cameron, and cast, Your movie was a big hit!!!!!

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Billy Zane star in this whopper of a movie. You get to see the personalities of each of them, Leo as the adventure seeking good guy, Billy as the pompous arrogant bad guy, and Kate as the uncertain but later passionate and fun loving lady. This film has realistic action sequences, an impactful storyline, and is heavy on the romance. The movie is rather long, but it is very involving and time will fly by.This is the top grossing film of all time, and has won 11 Oscars including Best Picture.A wonderful film.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drown, damn you, drown!!
How could Mr. Cameron take a subject like this and a cast and brig out the worst in everybody?

This dramatization of the tangled history of Apple Computer and Microsoft, based on a book by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, hits enough of the right notes to make its failures all the more frustrating. The script follows the entwined paths of Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates with a pointed sense of the cultural divide between the hip, self-absorbed Apple cofounder and the brilliant alpha geek behind Microsoft's eventual software empire, contrasting the Mac's countercultural underpinnings with the PC's more strait-laced origins. But Read more

XLNT background of the early years. I'm sure that people who are finally getting fed up with the PC world will have a lot of fun with any of the Apple's. The movie is a must see.

Several aspects catapulted me into this movie with a mesmerizing intensity which caused me to watch it several times, and to know I'll continue to do so periodically.
4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful little time capsule
I enjoyed this movie when it first aired on TNT, and only recently got around to buying it.

    BACK TO THE FUTURE
    5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Okay so maybe it's not a classic...but I think that it should be.This is a very well written script that stands the test of time.Watching this film on cable yesterday, the movie doesn't once fall into the campy column.I can't say the same for the rest of the series. To tell you the truth I think that they should have stopped at the one movie. But still, this movie has everything, laughs, lite-suspense, and just an all around good, clean family fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jim Thompson Fans Should Looooove This...
...or "Whoa, Momma! Is this some perverse fun."4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Thompson ambiance
Well, I liked it, folks. The nastiness of the original is nicely captured. I ain't gonna analyze it because analyzing is all about rationalizing what you can't deal with. Like Gummo, this is the world as others pretend not to see it. But it's in all of our heads all the time. It's just that most of us have it so deeply hidden & buried that we live for shrink & therapist. This would make a nice double bill with Woman Chaser. Long live Thompson & Willeford & David Goodis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Period Piece
This is not a film for everyone. It is dark, sultry, twisted and self indulgent, and that doesn't have mass appeal nowadays unless Quentin Tarantino is directing and people are shooting each other in the face. Itis, however, a terrific piece of filmmaking and as a fifties period pieceit is surpassed only by films actually made in the fifties.Read more

There seemed to be a particular spike in nuclear-war paranoia in the early 1980s, probably having to do Reagan's finger being on the trigger. Whatever the cause, it resulted in two particularly powerful 1983 films on the subject: the made-for-TV Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Be afraid, be very afraid !!!
This was one of the scariest movies I have ever seen.I saw it when it was originally released and it was the first movie I thought of given the present political climate in the world. The story never says who did what, when or who started it - only the MADD results follow the people in this story.Anyone who doubts we have to watch out for terrorists MUST watch this film. Excellent movie, but not for the children.Jane Alexander showed us every mother's nightmare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every American Should Watch This Movie.
There are some images from movies and television that I watched as a child that have been seared into my brain:the Yankee soldier who wets himself before going into battle in THE BLUE AND THE GREY; the venomous snake that spooks the horses in a river crossing in LONESOME DOVE which ends up killing Ricky Schroeder; the masks that the kidnappers where in FORTRESS.Added to these images are a couple more: that of the residents of a small town burning the bodies of their citizens from radiation poisoning after a nuclear holocaust because there is no place left to bury them and disease is spreading too fast and that of a young father (played by Kevin Costner) carrying the body of his newborn child in a dresser drawer to be buried. These last two images are from the film TESTAMENT.
