5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly 40 years old, now, the film still works...
You can even get a flash of Olivia Hussey's breast in the bedroom scene if you look closely, and she was only 15 at the time of filming, so this version of the ancient play was controversial in its day. It has passion, style, great supporting actors, and is true to its source as well. While the more recent version with Leonardo DiCaprio has some good moments, too, this one is the high water mark of "Romeo and Juliet" on film. I will never forget seeing this at the base theater at Fort Knox, Kentucky, after spending a month in Vietnam, facing almost another year in the Army. When the movie ended, one soldier in front of me said to his buddy, "They think they've got troubles? Try being in the damn Army!"Well, R and J did have life-ending troubles, but their falling in love, as instant as it was, achieves believability and really tugs at the hearts of the audience. This movie was a fine accomplishment, and its soundtrack album was also a big seller on LP in the late '60's. That Shakespeare fellow did his writin' before movies were invented, I think, yet his stuff adapts really well to the screen. For my taste, a Shakespeare movie almost always beats seeing his plays on stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Pinnacle Film Captures the Pure Essence of the Play
There have been many screen adaptations of Romeo and Juliet over the years. Some of them played by some of Hollywood's top actors and actresses. There was even the Romeo and Juliet last done by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, which to my mind is simply Romeo and Juliet on steroids.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brings back my teen years in the theater.
First saw this movie as a 14 or 15 year-old teen.Loved the film!It is one of those seminal movie moments of my youth.I think it is the definitive film version of 'Romeo and Juliet.'Never saw DiCaprio's version and have no real desire to.The DVD was of excellent quality, considering the original film was shot in 1968. My teen daughter watched it with me, and did have some trouble following the Shakespearean dialog, but she could still follow the storyline. (I think we had more exposure to the classics in the Baby Boomer Gen than do kids today.) Nonetheless, we both enjoyed the experience and the DVD was delivered in Amazon's usual timely manner. The angry Prince's final words to the feuding families, "All are punish-ed. ALL ARE PUNISH-ED!" stands as an electric moment in the film. The performances by all are terrific.Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming movie that deserves to be on DVD
Come to the Stable is a charming movie that deserves to be on DVD.There is fine acting all around and Hollywood can relearn on how to depict religion in a positive light and tone from movies from the late 1940's.
4-0 out of 5 stars A simple story about the POWER of faith
No complicated story line: two nuns come to America , from France, to "answer a call".They come with nothing except belief in this "call".They have no plan and no money but...mysterious things begin to happen and 'the call" starts to take shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love story
A beautiful soulmate story. The passion between Timothy and Kelly in this movie makes you want to fall in love over and over again. I gave this movie five stars because of the deep spiritual connection between the characters and their lives. The best surprise is how many famous actors are in this classic. This is my all time favorite love story.

In England, there is a castle that belonged to the Canterville family, a family known for their cowardice. During the 1600s, one such member Sir Simon of Canterville (Charles Laughton) fled from a duel to defend his brother's honor. His father was so ashamed with his son, that he walled him up to die in the castle. Since then, he was cursed to roam about a night until a member of the family performed a brave act in his honor.

DONT listen to that silly man " a viewer" He doesnt know a thing. You can watch this extrodinary film on DVD and reap the hearty rewards of laughter and happiness. Or you can watch a VHS and dial up the internet while you toast your snax on a fire. In other words....The dvd is far better then any old VHS. This DVD is the best. Just believe me. You will thank me later. And see Spamalot too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air.
With all the deadly serious movies about the grail out there these days it's good to once again watch a movie that treats the subject with a sense of humor.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A Newt?
One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Introduction to the American Revolution
Had very high hopes for this movie of introducing the American Revolution in an entertaining way. The movie is an adaptation of the Newbery Award winning historical novel Johnny Tremain which is set during the American Revolution. The movie is okay but not at the exceptional level one generally thinks of for a Disney movie. The highlight of the DVD is Walt Disney talking about human freedom in the Special Feature The Making of Johnny Tremain and Introduction to the movie. As a possible alternative around Independence day would recommend the PBS documentary American Experience John and Abigail Adams which also covers this period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Tremain - DVD
This DVD covered a lot of the material mentioned in our school's Socical Studies curriculum.I used it as a supplement my curriculum because it provides a great visual of this time of history.I felt the themes of the importance of religion in peoples' lives, apprenticeship, rise of patriotism, and the means the minute men used to fight the war were explained well.

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM THE "BOSTON TEA PARTY" TO "PAUL REVERE'S RIDE" JOHNNY TREMAIN ENTERTAINS!
"Johnny Tremain" is among the most entertaining historical films ever produced.Disney's American Revolution films, such as "Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow," "The Swamp Fox" tv series, and "Johnny Tremain" are not only enjoyable feature films, they give the viewer a history lesson in the bargain.Young Hal Stalmaster plays Johnny, who is the son of a rich aristocratic woman who dies, leaving her son a sterling silver cup with the engraving LYTE on it.Johnny Lyte Tremain is secretly the heir to an English noble family of great wealth. As the story unfolds, he's caught up in the early stages of the coming American Revolution, with the Boston Tea Party and the Ride of Paul Revere to be played out with great performances by all. This movie was made for tv, however, plays as a theater release. The dvd transfer has some glitches and the color is not as vibrant as it should be.I taped this movie from the Disney channel and my vhs tape copy is more clear and the color has more depth.I highly recommend "Johnny Tremain" to fans of "Dr. Syn Alias the Scarecrow," "The Swamp Fox" tv series, and to all Disney dvd collectors."Johnny Tremain" is a definite essential to American history buffs and makes a great addition to any dvd library.

Using interviews with his son and daughters, his brother, the writers, choreographers, and conductors he worked with, and many of his friends, and clips of his rehearsals and performances, we see the life of a very talented, but troubled genius.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute BERNSTEIN!
It has been said many times that music is the universal language. While the truth of this statement is self-evident, occasionally even universal languages require translators. For that, great men such as Leonard Bernstein have stepped to the fore to assist the rest of us in understanding what is perhaps man's single greatest art form.

The studio apparently agreed with the previous reviewer, since the W.C. Fields segment was cut from the movie when it was initially released in theaters.

5-0 out of 5 stars That mythical place where everyone gets what he/she deserves
Other reviewers have given plenty of information regarding the general shape of this film--stars, cast, vignettes.A wonderful collaboration of ten different writers who together with a cast of stars, character actors, the Hall Johnson Choir (one of the gems of the Harlem Renaissance), and probably every extra then available in Southern California trace the path of a tailcoat cursed by it's tailor. This film was released in September 1942, the same month the German 6th Army began it's advance on Stalingrad; it was, and should be, considered light entertainment. Not Frank Capra-ish, each vignette weaves into the next with the final feeling of the film leading the viewer tobelieve that people, good and bad, somehow get what they deserve.A gentle gem with a particularly wonderful performance by Edward G. Robinson.Watch it with an open mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars A cavalcade of 20th Century Fox stars
"Tales of Manhattan" was an essentially pointless series of vignettes starring a plethora of stars under contract to 20th Century Fox studios. The pretext for the story surrounded a finely tailored formal tailcoat which was purported to be cursed. The tailcoat represented a talisman of both good and evil as it was passed from character to character.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your Money!!!
If you're one of those who likes to see 'artsy' films for the sake of conversation, by all means check this oddball out.If, however, you want to watch a movie to be entertained or to appreciate Tango, be advised: This movie absolutely sucked.Potter was uninspiring and passionless, her love interest was self-centered and whiny, and what was up with the legless midget shooting horrific looking models in the color shots???In a word, the whole thing was terrible.Even the Tango wasn't very good in this one (primarily as it was usually Potter dancing, and she obviously needs some more practice!)...the one redeeming factor was the music, which was outstanding.Particularly moving was Yo-Yo Ma's Libertango.Do yourself a favor...buy the CD, skip the movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Want to learn Argntinian Tango? Watch this over & over.
Plot weak. No Matter. WATCH THE DANCERS!!!!over and over. Here you wont see snaps of the head from R-----L & back like in the dance competitions on PBS. Watch older people do it. My dancing has become more fluid (IM75 ) Thisis ARGENTINIAN TANGODANCED FOR FUN not for an award!

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice tango...bad story
This film was so disappointing. I love tango. And Buenos Aires. If it wasn't for both of these elements in the film...it would get no stars. Sally Potter is so self indulgent. The story is so discredible....that we are supposed to believe this young guy has a romantic attachment to her?! Perhaps if she had cast a younger female for the lead role this may have been more believeable. The actual 'plot' was so weak...nothing happens in the whole film except she learns tango and wrecks my head. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars almost as exciting as watching golf on tv
ok, i have an admission to make: i have always said this is one of the most boring movies ever made, but i never actually saw it til now. not that i didnt pay my way into the theater because i did. but i fell asleep after 20 minutes or so and never actually SAW the movie. now i have. worse movies have won the oscar: "gandhi", "kramer vs kramer", "the english patient", maybe a few more. but i dont think theres ever been a duller movie. that said, i gave it 2 stars instead of one to honor the all-too-brief shots of dennis christopher who was dreamycreamy back then, but is only on screen about 5 minutes. frankly, i found the two "heroes" to be a pair of self-centered religious zealots, and prigs to boot. and god, i loathe that vangelis music that played constantly for the decade after the movies release. my gawd, this thing beat "reds" for a best picture oscar?!?!? maybe i shall go back and take away the second star ...

What an amazing film! This is the story of a real olympics and the participants who represented Great Britain in track. The main characters are really well developed and include Abraham who is attending Cambridge University and besides being a stellar student of law has been graced with the ability to sprint. He is Hebrew in a Christian world son to a financier. He enrolls a coach named Mr. Masanbini who admits he can't put in what god left out but none the less agrees to train the young Ben.

5-0 out of 5 stars All these years later, still a fabulous film
Julia Roberts and Richard Gere magnetize the entire film and pull you into a fantasy land where dreams do come true.I understand the naysayers, but this film is not about Julia Roberts being a hooker.Obviously, some people find that horribly offensive. This movie is about love, gaining self-respect and believing in yourself (Kit . . . "take care of YOU").It's a feel good film about pursuing your dreams.Obviously, if some 14 year old decides she wants to be a hooker when she grows up so she can meet her prince charming, she needs some serious guidance.Yet I highly doubt even most 14 year old's are that stupidly literal about a film such as this.I'm 50 years old and, you know what?A LOT of my dreams HAVE come true in ways I never would have expected, including romatically. So there;0).

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie about Being a Whore
This is the worst movie I have seen in many, many years.I only gave it one star because there isn't a rating for negative stars. Does anyone who likes this movie not realize that its about a prostitute? A hooker?Julia Roberts can't act first of all.Secondly, the plot is so ridiculous. A rich successful businessman picks up a streetwalker for a night paid sex, and this is romantic? What a crock of crap!!! The most ridicuous, unbelievable scene in the whole movie is the scene where jason alexander's character makes a pass at Julia Robert's character.(Who, lets not forget, walks the street to have sex with whichever person will pay her money). During this scene, the hooker character actually acts like her dignity and virtue has been assaulted. She's a HOOKER!!! What the hell is wrong with you people???!!!
3-0 out of 5 stars The extras are 'pretty', but parts of the character development are unrealistic
The studio took a lot of time with anniversary extras for this self-described modern day 'Cinderella' film. I'm impressed with the number and quality of extras which are included inside this one release.Even with all of the technology we now have, very few movies get such extensive anniversary releases.

4-0 out of 5 stars Northwest Passage - The Movie's Version.
I first saw this picture when I was 10 or 11 years old (shortly after it was released). I thought it was great. I had not, at that time, read Kenneth Roberts' book, so I didn't realize how much they had changed it in order to make the movie. After reading the book (shortly after seeing the movie), I enjoyed the book even more. Re-seeing the movie at intervals through the years I have not felt that it was diminished by the changes made for the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great gritty movie!
This is a highly realistic, action packed film that delivers.Tracy is great, Walter Brennan is terricif and Robert Young was never better. The action is superb, the cinematography excellent and the story compelling.A must see gem!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, Northwest Passage Is P.I. with a big however. We
must not judge this movie on our terms. It is what it is. It involves three distinct eras. The movie takes place, in the 1750's. It was made in 1940 & we are viewing it today more than 60 years after that. The colonists, Americans, were subservient toBritish rule of law.Colonist in turn, hated most Indians & treated them as less than human, a nuisance to be eliminated. It appears that the movie got Major Robert Rodger correct. He was a bloodthirsty butcher of Indians. Why? Because they fought back. What choice was there? Anyway, did Spencer Tracy ever make a bad movie? He is superb. Did Rodgers have a vision of Manifest Destiny, on his own, 50 years before the Founding Fathers, as the movie suggests? Probably not. His men, Rodger's Rangers, were cutthroat Indian killers, independent & not fit for polite society. They made money on the number of scalps, men, woman, children or French they could sell to the British. They were loyal to Rodgers & would die for him. Robert Young does a good job also. He is a bit of a cipher & he joins the Rangers as an outsider. Historically I'm not sure his character ever existed but he moves the story forward. Walter Brennon does his usual fine work as the sidekick.

2-0 out of 5 stars What were they thinking???!!??
I like Flynn, Garson, and even Galsworthy as much as anyone, but what were they thinking when they put cast and wrote this movie?First of all we are to believe that Greer Garson is going to leave Errol Flynn for Robert Young? Who would prefer Marcus Welby to Captain Blood? We all know she is going to end up with Walter Pidgeon, anyway, but what woman in her right mind would choose Robert Young over Errol Flynn.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lavish MGM Period Drama With The Only Screen Teaming of Greer Garson And Errol Flynn
Almost everyone would be aware of the two equally famous television adaptations of John Galsworthy's respected literary work "The Forsyte Saga", however fewer people would know of this first much earlier film version released in 1949 that covered the period dealt with in Book One of Galsworthy's masterpiece. Despite MGM's increasing financial troubles as the 40's decade brought great changes to moviemaking in general here they really pulled out all their old magic to create a "typical prestige picture", the like of which would have warmed the heart of the studios by now long dead boy genius Irving Thalberg. The film boasts the only meeting on screen of legends Greer Garson, who was still the Queen of MGM despite some box office set backs, and on loan out Warner Bros. idol Errol Flynn in a quite pleasing non traditional role. Despite their very different screen personas and personalities the pair mesh surprisingly well on screen and almost make one forget that this film was also another in the legendary teamings of Garson with frequent costar Walter Pidgeon. The MGM attention to detail is evident everywhere here from the lavish production values, stunning period costumes and a supporting cast the like of which is largely unheard of nowadays.
5-0 out of 5 stars That Forsyte Woman
In 1949 MGM was on the verge of its 25th year of film making. To celebrate, the studio spared no expense on serveral big budget films based on famous novels, and "That Forsyte Woman" was given the special treatment. At the sametime, at Warner Brothers, Errol Flynn was signing his third contract with the company, but this time he was allowed to leave the studio, once a year, and make a film for MGM. WB had forced him into low budget films since about 1943, only returning to big budget in "Adventures of Don Juan" which floated like a lead ballon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful intellectual and ethical exercise...
This is one of my favorite films from the '60's, and I saw a superb stage production of it as well, two years before the film version. Sir Thomas More, chancellor of England, is asked to choose between his King and his Catholic Church. He refuses to take a side, publicly, but everyone in the nation knows he opposes King Henry's decision to break with the Pope so that he can marry another wife. How More (Paul Schofield) tries to stay alive via a silence that shouts a rebuke makes for compelling drama. A young Robert Shaw does a flamboyant and wonderful job as King Henry, but then, the entire supporting cast, as is common in British productions, is great. Faith and greed, power and the loss of it, survival and sacrifice...all are elements of this fine film.
5-0 out of 5 stars A courageous and moral man - Thomas More
A 1966 period movie with a true story about a man who stands up against powerful King Henry VIII and many others for his moral beliefs in regard to divorce. The king wanted a male heir and wanted to divorce his wife and take another one to achieve that.He was trying to get the church's permission to get out of this marriage with their approval. The stand Thomas More takes complicates his life in many ways, including his family and friends.More is an influential man of some means who was high in the leadership of England at that time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Would St. Thomas More really be any more popular today?
The technical excellence of this film on every level has already been sufficiently and deservedly documented many times over.

Several year ago I found a copy and have shared it with friends . All have loved the movie and have watched it several times before it is returned. I find it completely delightful and if you like old movies then this one ranks up there with the Secret Garden and Love Affair/Affair to Remember. You will not be disappointed, especially on a rainy afternoon.

The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that director/actor/writer Billy Bob Thornton (BBT) will never top it.Watch the included extras on Disc II of this release (over three hours worth) and you'll see that BBT agrees with that prediction."Sling Blade" is simply a GREAT movie, already a classic. It is better each time I watch it.

    Editorial Review

Bernardo Bertolucci does the nearly impossible with this sweeping, grand epic that tells a very personal tale. The story is a dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the emperors of China. It follows his life from its elite beginnings in the Forbidden City, where he was crowned at age three and worshipped by half a billion people. He was later forced to abdicate and, unable to fend for himself in the outside world, became a dissolute and exploited shell of a man. He died in obscurity, living as a peasant in the People's Republic. We never really warm up to John Lone in the title role, but this movie focuses more on visuals than characterization anyway. Filmed in the Forbidden City, it is spectacularly beautiful, filling the screen with saturated colors and exquisite detail. It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pu Yi : prisoner No. 981!
This film is really mesmerizing. The sumptuous locations that worked out as real stages to tell the tragic story of the raise and fall of the last Emperor of a very reduced territory of a huge nation. Enclosed in this zone, prisoner of the conventionalisms, his castrated childhood, slaved by his own power, became a fervent fan of the Western way of life thanks to the wise advises of his British mentor: R.J.
5-0 out of 5 stars Accomplishes the impossible
Ask any director in a world not yet blessed with The Last Emperor whether it might be possible to create a film that documents, with reasonable depth and historical accuracy, the modernization of China--from imperial days through the Cultural Revolution--and that does so while managing also to capture the immeasurable gravity, ethos, and pathos of the twentieth century and all its billions, and you'd be told in so many words that such a task was absolutely, without a doubt, impossible, no matter the allotted length.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
The Last Emperor is one of those movies that dazzle us even after 18 years of its original release. The acting is fantastic, the Photography simply beautiful, and the locations,(specially the Forbidden city sequences) are breathtaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic TV movie
They just don't make TV movies like this anymore. Well these days most TV-movies are cable based, but whatever the case, most of it's thrown together trash. The early 70s were a great time for TV movies ("Tribes, "Duel," "Brian's Song," etc). Little did I know as a young kid these prime-time specials would become ageless classics. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pro hippie, not Anti-war
'Tribes'was a movie I was made to watch in my sociology class, and considering the times, anti-war really hit home for us. Though, my boyfriend is in the army reserves, and so I know for a fact that the depiction of the boot camp was only partially accurate. However, it doesn't matter so much about how accurate it was. The other reviewers are constantly criticizing the movie's portral of Adrian as this abused hippy, but that wasn't what the movie was about at all. Adrian is a boy who is thrusted into a conformist controlled establishment which he had spent his life trying to defy. How he got there isn't the point. He maintains his beliefs of anti-conformity while still being in that environment and wins. The general's reasons and rules that he followed were accurate, he cannot be completely blamed, but the rules of not thinking just doing is what Adrian is against. He uses meditations to survive pain that he is expected to feel, he helps rather than competes, and he politely objects to things rather than arguing or simply accepting them. As to the scene where Adrian does not shoot a board isn't about being whimpy, it's about realizing that to shot that board is the equivalent of being willing to shoot a human being, which he's not. The message is pro-hippie and hippie ideals; you can be a pacifist and patriotic at the same time. The marine setting was just that, a setting. the ultimate location of anti-hippie conformity. See it for what it means, not what you see with the naked eye.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting In Retrospect
