5-0 out of 5 stars golf life as it used to be
As a former tour player now out of the game, this film captures alot of what the PGA tour used to be.The race to "Monday Qualifiers" by what we were referred to as "rabbits" was filled with alot of the shenanigans this movie portrays. I'm sure the PGA wasn't especially thrilled with the movie, but this system produced greats like Trevino, Rodriguez, and many more.Would love to see this movie out in DVD (haven't owned a VCR in years)soon! As per other reviews, B movie with great content and storyline. Would by 10 DVD's for gifts for my golfing buddies!

4-0 out of 5 stars A rememberable movie
Excellent Golf Movie, RANDY QUAID at his best.Perhaps the best since & quot. THE Last Detail & quot. The TIN CUP OF THE 80'S.

5-0 out of 5 stars "You always were a silly old romantic, Spec."
I wrote HBO pictures a few years ago begging for a DVD release, and still we're forced to wait, and wait, and wait.

    Editorial Review

Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in the "Fields"
I too have been waiting for this film on DVD..I have read the book twice and wholeheatedly endorse everything the director and amazing actors submitted themselves to,,(heat, general lack of amenities etc ) to bring us this absolutely great flick. I also love the similarly placed Aguirra Wrath of God,,what ever HACK wrote the New Yorker Summary as it appears above, should be suspended by his thumbs orbetter yet, whatever,,he missed the point totally,,saying the mid 60 attitudes have changed,,HA! Stupid would-be reviewer would probably make a similar statement about Pride & Prejudice or War and Peace,,buddy,we are talking universals here some things never change not will they ever,,,I wish Amazon would remove the big blurb described it does no good whatsoever,,having said my piece I will retreat and brood,,

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for DVD
This is one of the best movies I've had a privilege to view. But waiting for the DVD has been forever, where is it? When do we get a chance to see this happening. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Bates gives incredible performance!
This is a 1991 film, but don't miss it! It's a rather long tale, but you won't be bored a single minute. Bates gives a stellar performance as the wife of a missionary sent to convert the 'jungle natives'. When the mission goes very wrong, she goes mad. Berenger plays a native american who flies them in on a plane, and after he sees the bravery of a jungle native, strives to return to his 'wild heritage' by heading out to join the tribe. It's a great tale of how horribly wrong things can go when the white world tries to force their ways upon a primitive culture. It's a very deep, passionate, historic movie that warrants being watched at least twice. All the actors seem to 'feel' the importance of its message and give their roles one-hundred percent. Bravo!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives a good understanding of the tragedy and the events leading up to it.
The Jonestown tragedy had previously been made into the exploitation film "Guyana - Crime of the Century". However, this TV production, with a running time of about three hours gives a betterunderstanding of how it could happen. The story starts when Jim Jones is a child, being indoctrinated by a Christian fundamentalist friend. He starts the integrated People's Temple Church after discovering how racist the established churches in San Francisco are. He really wants to do something good for the community and he does, but power corrupts and the church turns into more of a money making cult and Jones turns into a cruel leader. His drug use and paranoia doesn't make things better. After moving to Guyana, Jones has complete control over his folloers, and with him as a leader, Jonestown is headed for destruction.
    5-0 out of 5 stars Before Waco,Before Heaven's Gate.
Jim Jones,A crazy preacher brainwashes his People's Temple cult to move from Illinios,I think to Jonestown.Africa, where they are forced to drink a Kool-Aid laced with syinide. Jim Jones himself had jungle fever,so he was dying anyway. Some of the People's temple did get away. The People's Temple did call Jim Jones"DAD"

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but highly inaccurate
Powers Boothe, while obviously talented and provided a strong character, he did not capture the real Jim Jones in any sense. This movie is so full of inaccuracies that it is not worth viewing to obtain any true information regarding the Peoples Temple movement. I would recommend some of the documentaries such as Purple Haze or the A & E Biography of Jim Jones-Journey into Madness.I found this motion picture misleading and almost total fiction as I know many, many family members and survivors of Peoples Temple and have written/researched Peoples Temple extensively. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this movie is my all time fav and needs to be released on DVD
more of the same as other reviews have said......I am an anglophile of sorts and this film has been my favorite period historical drama since I was a teenager and saw it on tv years ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great period drama!
I think what makes "Anne of the Thousand Days" stand out among the period films churned out by Hollywood is the outstanding screenplay by Maxwell Anderson. While a few historical liberties are taken for the sake of the flow of the story, Anderson captures the tumultuous rise and catastrophic fall of a young English aristocratic lady who once caught the glance of a king. Richard Burton totally projects Henry VIII's obsessive, all-consuming lust that is willing to destroy his wife, his daughter, his best friends, his church and thousands of his subjects in order to obtain his lady. Richard looks at Genevieve Bujold (Anne Boleyn) with such a mix of torment, passion and guilt that it is almost as if he were looking at Elizabeth Taylor, but such is the great actor's ability to become Henry VIII in this film. Bujold is magnificent as Anne, graceful, witty, winsome, and strong-willed. I was struck by the unhappiness of the couple when they were finally together, living in opulence from the confiscated monasteries. Henry's love of Anne seemed to die almost as soon as he finally sated his desire for her. Bujold's Anne goes to her death with brash dignity, while Henry moves on to another wife. An incredible tragedy in which many innocent people suffered is well-depicted with authentic costumes and stunning sets.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grows on you
I used to really hate this one for all the inaccuracies it contained. Then, as the years went by, I mellowed out and also saw some truly terrible adaptations of this same material. Every time I see this one, I like it more. The story of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn is inherently melodramatic, and so easy to get wrong. This film hits the mark far more often than it misses. It looks great, is cast superbly and tells an engaging, well-paced story. Yes, some license is taken (Katharine of Aragon is once again a dark, accented Spaniard, Thomas More isn't permitted to make his famous scaffold speech, Mary Boleyn is portrayed as "fallen" and abandoned, divorce was in fact common among 16th century nobility, etc.), and I still say that what 20th century writers invent often isn't as interesting as the real thing. Still, there's enough here to make it well worth the full purchase price, and it even tugs at the ol' heartstrings in a way few historical dramas do. Recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lets Get together!!
Annie and Haley are identical twins. Only they don't know it. They both meet at a summer camp and at first they do not get along. Then they are forced top live together and that is when they find out that they are twins.
5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the original
A charming film score coupled with a refreshing re-write of the timeless story turn this one into a classic in its own right.Lindsay Lohan outshines Hayley Mills in the role(s) of the twins, which puts this one a notch above the 1961 version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable!
This was the first movie I had seen with Lindsay Lohan and her performance has made me quite a fan of hers.Throw in an absolutely charming performance from Dennis Quaid, an ideal mom played by the lovely and talented Natasha Richardson, and a smart and warm housekeeper played by...er, I forget..and you'll see why this film gets so many rave reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie - Bar None!
Although the story surrounds the Spanish Jesuits building a mission in the South American wilderness, the real action takes place in the heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must see movie
This movie has it all, great screenplay, actors, set, costumes, extras, direction and cinematography. Everything appears to be set in the correct time period. And does a very vivid job portraying of the Eighteenth Centaury in the Amazon Jungle.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
This film is as close as it gets to perfection in the genre of historical fiction. DeNiro and Irons turn in two of the best peformances of their careers. The story, by Robert Bolt, is both complex and compelling. Few films engage the viewer on such a deep level and ask them to make a choice between the characters and their convictions. Is it right to take up arms to defend the innocent or is pacificism the only path for followers of Christ? Best film to ever take on this question. The scenery is majestic and the film's score is haunting. This is a sad, beautiful film that will rarely be equaled. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but do not ask for the impossible
I will try not to repeat what other reveiwers have said, so I will be short about all the qualities of this miniseries: excellent actors, engrossing storyline, excellent reconstruction of the siege as it happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Although I just viewed the abridged version, I found it highly suspenseful and riveting. Otool and Strauss were exceptional--that's what made the drama so compelling. Each man was intensely resolved to achieve his goal, and neither would surrender to the other. Also, each hero was extremely human--sensitive and thoughtful--despite the pluck and resolve each had.

    Editorial Review

Miles Utley (Tom Berenger) is a guerrilla for God, a gun-wielding member of the Danites, the militia wing of the Mormons during the late 19th century. Once the defensive arm of the besieged church, the Danites (dubbed "the Avenging Angels") are now feared by the Utah congregation and Utley is too good at his job: he's become, one accuser says, "A man who murders in the name of peace." After stopping an assassination attempt on the life of Brigham Young (a quietly authoritative Charlton Heston, whose star presence makes the most of a handful scenes), Utley is quickly hidden away and the details hushed up, but as he pulls at a few loose threads he unravels a conspiracy that shoots to the very top of the church. The twisting plot makes for an engrossing mystery and the locations are never less than gorgeous, but the real hook is that this conspiracy film is inspired by a real but little-known bit of Mormon history. Berenger is a natural as a buckskinned, quick-draw Mormon soldier, holding his own in scenes with grinning Western icon James Coburn as Utley's easygoing but ruthlessly dedicated mentor. As the mystery winds up, the more interesting dimension of Utley's crisis in faith is transformed into showdown heroics, which makes for a rousing old-fashioned conclusion if a disappointing character study. 5-0 out of 5 stars a slam-bang adventure about a little know part of western history
tom berenger brings great strenth to this role and this film about a little known sect of the morman faith, the danites,or avenging angels,as they were called. these men were recruited and trained as bodyguards for brigham young and as protecters of the mormans against the pursecuters of their faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars MARVELOUS WESTERN "FICTION"
A movie trailer for THE AVENGING ANGEL claims that what the viewer will see is the "true" story of the Avenging Angel, in this case played by Tom Berenger. Let's face it folks, if this is a "true" story from the American West based on historical facts then we need to all go searching for the grave sites of Shane, Conagher and J.B. Books!
5-0 out of 5 stars A real Utley
Avenging Angel is based on a book written by Gary L. Stewart about the life of his Great-Grandfather Gabriel Marion Utley. The movie is both fact and fiction. But well worth watching. The movie's discription of Miles' life and the real life of Gabriel's life are very similar. ... Read more

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is one of my favorite holiday films. Clark, Ellen, Rusty, Audrey, and Cousin Eddie are back but this is nothing like the disapointing sequel, European Vacation (that movie was awful), this time the Griswold's decide to stay home and celebrate Christmas the good old fashioned-way. Both of their parents arrive and unexpected guest causes mayhem for The Griswold's, yikes! Cousin Eddie, played geniusly by Randy Quaid. The last hour of the film is non-stop laughs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Overlooked 80's movie
This movie is a fantastic must see from the 80's. Especially for anyone that loves the music of INXS, the soundtrack is great and the dance scene at the gym still makes me wonder where Adian Quinn learned to dance like that.If you have missed this one please try to get a copy, it is a must see and should be on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underated, Overlooked Classic!
Alot of people have never seen or even heard about this 1984 movie. Reckless is a underated, overlooked classic. The movie stars Adain Quinn as Johnny in his break out role & Daryl Hannah early in her career plays Tracey. Movie takes place in a gray, smoggy, depressing looking steel town somewhere in Pennsylvania. Johnny is a troubled smart {...} rebel with a alcholic father, no friends & years before his mother abandoned the family for reasons that are not clear. Tracey is a pretty & popular cheerleader with a loving upper middle class family preparing for college in the fall. But something is missing for Tracey - her boyfriend & friends bore her & she feels she is missing out on something. She desparately wants to live on the edge instead of her predictable, safe, day-to-day, ho-hum exsistance. Tracey wants excitement. She exchanges glances in class with Johnny. A charity dance pairs her with him by chance. They play cat & mouse games. He challenges her. She takes dares. So she takes up with the mysterious, sexy & dangerous Johnny & starts really living & feeling for the first time in her life. Their chemistry & sexual attraction is instant & all consuming. They fall quickly in love & lust. Film contains more than one scene of the sexiest, most graphic, explicit & passionate sex scenes allowed in a R rated film. Full frontal nudity. A steamy pool scene. A love scene in a boiler room of their empty school. Her parents bed. You can almost feel Johnny's obsession with Tracey. A excellent soundtrack with Bob Segar's songs & new wave music of the 1980's really adds to the film. The ending really leaves it up to your imagination as to what might happen next. Do they really ride off into the sunset forever? I would really recommend you track this film down -it won't dissappoint. This is one of my favorite films of all time. Really brings you back to your high school days & the excitement of first love.

4-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
Although i thought Darryl Hannah's performance was especially wooden, i absolutely loved it. I remember it was the first time i ever laid eyes on Aidan Quinn. I especially love the dance scene in that film. One of the great 80s flicks! 5-0 out of 5 stars DVD please!
It would be a tribute to the late Chris Penn to release this classic film on DVD. If not...it's casual.

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT a sequel to Fast Times, but still an excellent slice of 80's.
In high school, I watched this movie every time it was on and it is still entertaining 22 years later. People assume this is a "sequel" To Fast Times At Ridgemont High. It was written by Cameron Crowe (who wrote Fast Times) and stars Chris Penn (Sean's brother). It was directed by Art Linson (who produced Fast Times) but it IS its own film. I like to think of it as a companion movie to Fast Times. What happens immediately AFTER high school? The Wild Life tackles that question and does a great job at it. The character of Jim (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) was me in high school. I was 15 when the Wild Life came out, so Jim was the character that I could relate to the most. I lived with my single mom and sister. I was obsessed with Vietnam (and WW2). I also wore camouflage pants to school about 3 days a week, hated authority figures and hung out in a bowling alley (as well as the mall arcade). The other characters are also interesting as well, but Jim was just the one that "clicked" with me. I assume Cameron Crowe based these people on real life versions just like he did with his Fast Times script and chances are, you will relate to someone in this film. I have always liked Eric Stoltz and in this he plays the straight guy to Chris Penn's obnoxious character. They work well together, but it's a friendship of necessity not choice. This is a much more serious film than Fast Times but still has some great, funny moments. Cool soundtrack with ORIGINAL songs by Bananarama and Eddie Van Halen. Release a dvd Universal. Don't underestimate the fan base for this film! A whole generation watched The Wild Life on cable over and over again. Release this movie ASAP as my VHS tape is getting haggard.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Santa Vittoria
An excellent, excellent, excellent movie. Anthony Quinn should have won the Oscar. Anna Magnani is at her best. And Hardy Kruger underrated as always is the German officer who still has a humane aspect. A true delight of a film

4-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Treasure
This is a must see movie that is a true Anthony Quinn classic. And all the actors are great in this movie that is both hilarious and dramatic since it takes place during the Second World War.I, and many of my friends and family, would love to see this movie come on DVD. I could see this movie over and over again and never get tired of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secret of Santa Vittoria.
A very good movie, an excellent performance by Anthony Quinn! I also read the book and the movie compliments it. I really wish this movie would be available on DVD for European format. Is anybody out there to hear this? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars we need a DVD petition!!!!!!!
I don't know what all of the legal issues involved with releasing this movie on DVD are, but I truly believe that if they knew how in demand this DVD was they would place a greater priority on resolving any isdsueds involved in getting this to DVD. I wonder if Amazon has a petition area?

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm only giving it three stars because it's a remake
This is based on my mother's review of the film. I haven't watched it.She saw the other versons of the film and liked the other earlier versions better. So it's not near the top of her list as movies to watch or re-watch.Some sequels are better than the originals, some aren't.This probably isn't a bad movie, but nothing special.
5-0 out of 5 stars Please Put This Movie On DVD!
Move Over Darling starring Doris Day and James Garner is a very good movie, it is a remake of the classic 1940's comedy My Favorite wife, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne and though I think the original is better I also like this remake and I think it is a very good movie that definitely should get a DVD release. Doris Day plays Ellen Wagstaff Arden a woman presumed drowned at sea in an accident, her husband Nicholas Arden played by James Garner has her declared legally dead after seven years and gets married to this woman named Bianca on the same day he has Ellen declared dead and it becomes very clear that Bianca is a spoiled, bitchy, high-strung, neurotic woman prone to temper tantrums if she doesn't get her way and boy is she in for a shock! Ellen it turns out isn't really dead but has been living on an island with a a man who also surrived the accident and they have been rescued from the island and on the same day she is declared legally dead and Nick marries Bianca, Ellen arrives at the house where she lived with Nick, sees their children who were very young when she disappeared so they don't know who she is, and she sees Nick's mother, who after recovering from the shock of seeing her tells her Nick has just remarried and you can tell she isn't too fond of her son's new wife, but since Ellen isn't really dead and she is sure Nick has never gotten over Ellen they come up with a plan for Ellen to reunite with Nick. This movie is hilarious, the combination of romantic-comedy and slapstick is perfect! Doris Day and James Garner are both wonderful as Ellen and Nick and Thelma Ritter is wonderful as Nick's mother Grace, and Polly Bergen who plays tempermental Bianca is also does a great acting job. I highly recommend this movie and I hope it gets on DVD and in widescreen I read somewhere that because of some legal battle it took a long time to get Move Over Darling on video and I hope that it doesn't take a long time to get this movie on DVD! ... Editorial Review

Ranking No. 21 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films, this 1940 classic is a bit dated in its noble sentimentality, but it remains a luminous example of Hollywood classicism from the peerless director of mythic Americana, John Ford. Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck's classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California, but it's the story's emotional resonance and theme of human perseverance that makes the movie so richly and timelessly rewarding. It's all about the humble Joad family's cross-country trek to escape the economic devastation of their ruined farmland, beginning when Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns from a four-year prison term to discover that his family home is empty. He's reunited with his family just as they're setting out for the westbound journey, and thus begins an odyssey of saddening losses and strengthening hopes. As Ma Joad, Oscar-winner Jane Darwell is the embodiment of one of America's greatest social tragedies and the "Okie" spirit of pressing forward against all odds (as she says, "because we're the people"). A documentary-styled production for which Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland demanded painstaking authenticity, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Orleans and the Dust Bowl are the same thing
It is defined still today as one of the most socialists film to come out from mainstream Hollywood.Contains scenes of authoritarian brutality and the awakening of proletarian consciousness.A film like this would be impossible in today's political context, and for sure it will not win Oscars (nowadays some throwaway things like "Crash" get the golden uncle).Despite a populist epilogue added by master producer Zanuk the events depicted in the film remain as the strongest warning against capitalism that I ever seen from an American movie.Greg Tolland's photography and the sweeping force of the story will blow you away.
5-0 out of 5 stars seeing "Grapes of Wrath" is reliving my family's past!
I've seen "Grapes of Wrath" many many times, and I bought the DVD to show my grandchildren what life was like and still is for many farmworkers. The Mexican farmworkers also went thru alot of hardships trying to survive and barely exist on what little they earned by harvesting the crops in California, Texas, Idaho, etc. etc.I show my Grandchildren this film to show the importance of getting an education, so as to break the cycle of living impoverished by working in the fields. Also, the more education you have, then you can do more to bring about justice to the lives of FarmWorkers by getting involved in making changes, and sometimes taking risks. I lived that life, so I know what I am talking about when I mentioned the hardhsips one had to endure in order to survive! and I enjoyed the way the film is told and Henry Fonda has always been one of my favorite Actors , as well as his daughter Jane Fonda. I recommend this movie to anyone that wishes to understand the plight of the Farmworker, whether they be "Oakies","Mexican",Filipinos", etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful
This was a very interesting movie. It starts out slow, with the Joad family losing their farm and heading west, and mostly follows the storyline of the original novel. However, unlike other movies (from books), it has its own spirit and excitement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Texas Two Step
Once a year, for 16 years, the richest men in the territory gather for the biggest event of the year. It's 2 fisted action in Laredo, but no guns are needed as the big event is the annual poker game. They gather behind closed doors in the town's hotel/saloon that caters to rowdy cattlemen. There's nothing more important and a 12:30PM sharp the game will start.
4-0 out of 5 stars An ace in the hole, suitable for most any audience
Superior acting from an all-star cast would alone make this one a winner.Add a novel story line with continual twists and turns, nonstop action, and glimpses into human nature elicited through a big stakes poker game, and you end up with one of the best westerns ever filmed. The only negative surprise is how few people -- even movie buffs -- know about this one.The industry should make it available in DVD, but the VHS sound and picture quality are as close to DVD as anything I've seen.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Temptation And Tragedy In The Bullring . . . . Gorgeous Feast For The Eyes . . . . A Contender For A DVD
Rouben Mamoulian's remake of the silent classic that made a star of Rudolph Valentino is a visual treat. The techincolor is rich, with all the shades of color (especially the blues and reds)glorious. And the stars don't look too shabby either! Tyrone Power makes a gorgeous Juan Gallardo, the poor boy who rises to fame in the bullring, but who is unable to resist the shallow and deadly beautiful noblewoman Dona Sol (Rita Hayworth, on loan from Columbia, about to be catapulted to stardom), despite his gentle, loving wife, Carmen (Linda Darnell, in her fourth and last teaming with Power).
5-0 out of 5 stars Blood and Sand
Tyrone Power with boyhood pals runs away from home to become a bullfighter. Comes back successful and marries girl (Linda Darnell) whom he has loved since Childhood. Power becomes most famous bullfighter in all Spain. It goes to his head. Is seduced by temptress sleaze played by Rita Hayworth. Through loose living with this slut, he sinks into the lowly pits of despair and failure. Wife loves him and is true all the while. He comes back for one last round to reclaim what he lost. He is magnificent but is gored and dies with his loving wife at his side, forgiving him for all that he has done. A real bitter sweet tale. Linda Darnell as always is incredibly beautiful and puts Hayworth to shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars The rags-to-riches tale of a matador
"Blood and Sand," stars Tyrone Power as Juan Gallardo, the son of a matador who died in the arena. Juan vows to be even better than his father, and gradually does become the most honored bullfighter in Sevilla.Along the way he marries his childhood sweetheart, Carmen (Linda Darnell), and falls under the spell of a wealthy and heartless socialite (Rita Hayworth).

4-0 out of 5 stars Music of the Heart
Meryl Streep teaches violin at an inner-city elementary school. Based on a true story. Directed by Wes Craven. We know the genre, right? White person saves black people from themselves. It is sooooo easy to screw up a movie like this. But guess what? They didn't. The first 20 minutes were a little shaky, but then they hit their stride. I appreciate this movie on many different levels. Yet another keeper, and it might even have classroom potential. You know I like to show black people who are real instead of caricatures, and it'd be nice to bring Meryl into the classroom because the Chinese are just as inundated with no-talent Hollywood bubbleheads as the Americans are.
    4-0 out of 5 stars Absol;utely Heartwarming
Music of the Heart is just what the title says.Meryl Streep is wonderful as the teacher who wants to make a difference in childrens' lives. The children are wonderful actors and actresses, and the story is quite touching. The story just builds and builds, and the ending to me was the high point of the whole story--when the novice violinists played with the real famous violinists. It sent chills through my spine. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who wants some good entertainment.

Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it's almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed--no doubt to make money between his smaller, cheaper masterpieces--but one would have thought he would invest something of himself in here. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie Musical
The Amazon review by Tom Keogh is totally ridiculous. "Charmless and dull???" I saw this movie about 8 times when it came out when I was little and was loved it so much. It's full of adventure, great songs, and a story about wanting to belong that children and adults can both relate to. The performances are great. One of Carol Burnett's best. If you haven't seen this movie yet, see it now.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sam Elliott is good in this movie
I love Sam Elliott.I bought this because I like Sam Elliott, Tennessee, and Sam Houston. Nothing is particularly factual here and the picture quality of the DVD stands a lot of improvement. But a decent watch, when tired of everything else on your shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for a Cold Winter Day
This is not the best TV movie ever made, but it's got it moments. In particular, several actors truly bring to life the people they portray.John P. Ryan personifies the jerk history knows David Burnett to have been.Richard Yiquez and Peter Gonzales Falcon had roles much too small, as General Santa Anna and Juan Seguin, but they played them so very well.Sam Elliott, particularly in exhibiting Houston's oratorical skill, was fascinating. It comes closer to portraying the time than do many other depictions of the Texas Revolution.
