Editorial Review

Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Monarchies tend to create dysfunctional families.
Disney's "The Lion King" is a pretty good movie about a young lion cub, named Simba, who is to become king of a place called Pride Rock located in the appropriately named Pride Lands. I always thought that the part where Simba's father, Mufasa, is killed by his brother, Scar, was kind of tough to watch. On the other hand, from a historical standpoint, scenarios like these were at some point a commoplace reality, all because of an intense desire for power. The most memorable part of the film is the scene where Scar turns on the hyenas, to whom he'd referred as the "real enemy," then tries to make up with them right afterwards by calling them his "friends." The best part was the subsequent reaction by the hyenas to his double crossing.
5-0 out of 5 stars il'd love to give this 20 out of 5 stars
this movie was incredable. i don't understand how people can dislike this film. this movie's deep and intense story made it great for children AND their parents, a feat rarely accomplished. but rather than stay depressing and traumatizing, this film goes from drama to side-splitting humor within 13 seconds. the best part is that this is all done with seemless perfection.
1-0 out of 5 stars dont mess with classics
I give the original 5 stars, but why is disney taking all its classics and adding new songs to it? i was so dissapointed when i rented this and there were new scenes in it. i dont want "new and improved" i want the original, the one i watched when i was younger. ... Read more

Barbra Streisand made her directorial debut with this 1983 adaptation of the Isaac Bashevis Singer story about a young Eastern European woman (Streisand) who disguises herself as a male at the turn of the century in order to get an education. Except for an excessive musical score with too many songs and Streisand's tiresome tendency to play characters who suppress their beauty, the film is crisp and engaging, and the gender-bending love story complications are fun, if gimmicky. Streisand gives a smart, vulnerable performance and gets fresh work from costars Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yentl DVD playable in the us
I cannot imagine why this is not on a DVD, version that can be played on any DVD in the USA.I have been seeking one for two years now.

I totally GOT this movie!!I LOVE LOVE Barbra Streisand, and I have seen ALL her Movies.Yentl is one of my all time favorites!
5-0 out of 5 stars How could anyone give this film anything but 5 stars?
This is one of my favorite movies. It is a very interesting and moving picture and also very funny in some parts (Anshel's first night of wedded bliss with Hadass comes to mind.) Barbra Streisand was so talented in "Yentl." But I think Mandy Patinkin was just as entertaining, maybe more because the character of Avigdor was so multifaceted. They worked so well together. I don't understand how a classic like this is not on DVD? How could anyone give this film anything but 5 stars? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Sleeper
Crossing Delancey tells the story of two people from different socio-economic backgrounds who meet and stumble to try to form a relationship.Izzy is a young professional who meets Sam through her Jewish grandmother's matchmaker. When Izzy learns that her "match" sells pickles she's quick to try and hide her date from her friends. She's also quick to judge.Meanwhile, Sam has wholeheartedly fallen for Izzy, oblivious to the fact that she's a little embarrassed about his job.Can she overcome her preconceived notions about the man?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top ten favorites
Crossing Delancey is one of the most intelligent, sweet, REAL love stories ever. Made a Peter Riegert fan of me... he makes all the "pretty boy" protagonists look shallow and plastic.I have given away two copies of the VHS version, and am rapidly wearing out the third.I can see a definite need for a DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Release DVD
This movie has You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle beat, without a doubt. (While You've Got Mail was fine, Sleepless in Seattle was rather contrived, with wall-to-wall romantic music, which for me made it not at all appealing, as much as I like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.)

When you are in the mood for a pleasant little romance, this should fit the bill. Amy Irving and Richard Dreyfuss are young pianists vying for the same prize. Surprise, surprise, they fall in love. We then must wait, with (nearly) breathless anticipation, to see if she will throw the contest to ensure his love. It is all a bit starry-eyed, but not overly gooey. The concert footage is handled with class, and there are some fine supporting performances from Sam Wanamaker and Lee Remick. It is also a lot of fun to see Dreyfuss and Irving as such fresh-faced innocents. Read more

Just a short review of amovie I would immediately buy if released on DVD.I saw this movie with a group of piano students about 25 years ago, and it seemed to embody much of the angst, joys, and politics of this type of competition.Although somewhat trite, the movie provided a themefor a group of college aged music students to identify with.I check about once a year to see if this movie is available on DVD, and alas---not yet. I will keep checking in hopes that the studios will see this little gem for what it is! ... Read more

With all the deadly serious movies about the grail out there these days it's good to once again watch a movie that treats the subject with a sense of humor.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Newt?
One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

Although the story surrounds the Spanish Jesuits building a mission in the South American wilderness, the real action takes place in the heart.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must see movie
This movie has it all, great screenplay, actors, set, costumes, extras, direction and cinematography. Everything appears to be set in the correct time period. And does a very vivid job portraying of the Eighteenth Centaury in the Amazon Jungle.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
This film is as close as it gets to perfection in the genre of historical fiction. DeNiro and Irons turn in two of the best peformances of their careers. The story, by Robert Bolt, is both complex and compelling. Few films engage the viewer on such a deep level and ask them to make a choice between the characters and their convictions. Is it right to take up arms to defend the innocent or is pacificism the only path for followers of Christ? Best film to ever take on this question. The scenery is majestic and the film's score is haunting. This is a sad, beautiful film that will rarely be equaled. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great movie and should be on dvd
I agree with the other reviewers this is a great movie and deserves to be on dvd, it has a good story, good music,GREAT dancing from Liza, great cast I just love Julie Walters in this movie, it is a feel good movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Dance Films Ever
Viewing Stepping Out with my daughter, who is a dancer, has become a wonderful and regular pastime in our house. Liza Minelli is phenomenal in this film whether singing, acting, or dancing. Even though the film is Liza's vehicle, the superb cast of dancing actors holds its own against her talent. Each character reminds us of someone we know. Each character becomes a beloved friend as the plot develops. I'm going to write to Paramount and ask that it be made into a DVD. This lovely film deserves to be preserved for my daughter's daughters! Engaging, funny, dramatic, and full of music, this film is a must-see for fans of all musical theater

Editorial Review

Writer-director Robert Rossen and character actors Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge (in her film debut) took home Oscars (for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively) for this excellent adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Crawford stars as Willie Stark, a charismatic populist Southern politician (inspired by the real Louisiana Governor Huey Long) who belies his "man of the people" roots as he ruthlessly maneuvers, lies, and deals his way into the halls of power. John Ireland is his right-hand man, Jack Burden, a newsman turned political flack who hangs on to Stark's early idealism even in the face of Stark's most reprehensible acts of corruption. McCambridge is Stark's cool mistress come calculating assistant. The immediacy of the drama is due in part to a documentary-like style, notably in the scenes on the campaign trail where Stark sways crowds with his folksy rhetoric and estimable charm. Joanne Dru and John Derek also costar. Rossen's savage screenplay and firm direction give the film a powerful punch, but it's Crawford's blustery charm and oversized performance that carry the picture. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is How To Make An Unbiased Political Movie
You know what I really appreciated about this political story? The filmmakers went overboard NOT to paint the main character as either a Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal. It winds up, then, being more a human-interest story. In other words, there was no political agenda....unlike most films, especially in the last 50 years.
4-0 out of 5 stars Famous political novel-turned-film
Time has been less kind to Robert Rossen's legendary adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel based on the rise of Huey Long than you might imagine. This film won a passel of Academy Awards in 1949 (including Best Picture) , and it has superb production values and very unusual experimental dialogue (the characters often repeat the same sentence many times for different effect), but the plot is at times confusing, given that many subplots are largely dropped but glancingly alluded to from the original novel. It's often hard to figure out why certain characters, particularly the women, undergo sudden reversals, and you feel constantly as if there were other crucial stories you're not being told. The acting is highly variable, with some very unmemorable performances in underwritten roles but also with some excellent work from Broderick Crawford as the megalomanical central character Willie Stark and Mercedes McCambridge as the hardbitten Sadie (both of whom won Oscars), and from Anne Seymour as Willie's idealistic wife who learns to compromise her values as Willie's star rises. The DVD used right now is fairly unsatisfactory, since the original screen ratio of the film has been significantly altered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Mind of the Crooked Politician
This is an unusual movie, where the hero is also the villain. I wish modern people would see this movie just to understand the difference between the public perception of a powerful politician and the way he behaves in private. Politics is a dirty game that muddies anyone who plays to win. It is a movie about how power corrupts everyone touched even indirectly by that power.

This 1995 family film tries to put a fun spin on the story of a paranormalist and widower (Bill Pullman) who moves into a new house with his daughter (Christina Ricci) and meets up with the ghost of a dead little boy. Based on the comic book about Casper the friendly ghost, the film is a dreary series of awkward interactions between live actors and computer effects, and you can almost see Pullman and Ricci reconsidering the project while on camera. A few cameo appearances from uncredited stars help things a bit. But there's no way, based on this film, that one could have guessed that its director, Brad Silberling, would go on to make the exceptional drama Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars CASPER NOT AS SPIRITED AS CARTOONS
There's nothing really awful about this big budget version of the classic comic/cartoon series; there's also nothing really great about it either. In transporting the friendly spook into the modern realm, we get okay effects and a few laughs, but nothing to earn it classic status. This time, Casper and his naughty trio of friends haunt an old manor recently inherited by a greedy woman and her cohort.A treasure is supposedly hidden within its walls, so she hires a ghost "shrink" and his precocious teenage daughter to rid the house of the spooks.Kids will probably find it amusing, although there is some strong language and sexual innuendo.Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci try gamely to make it work, and they're adequate but it's really Cathy Moriarty in her best Cruela Deville impersonation who steals the acting honors.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to watch
I was surprised to find Casper is as fun to watch now as it was when it first came out. It's actually a very entertaining film with a good cast, althought the non-human characters steal the show. I enjoyed watching Casper's uncles Stinkie, Stretch, and Fatso. 3-0 out of 5 stars Shhheeeessh

This classic 1964 television special featuring Rudolph and his misfit buddies set the standard for stop-motion animation for an entire generation before Tim Burton darkly reinvented it in the early 1990s. Burl Ives narrates as Sam the Snowman, telling and singing the story of a rejected reindeer who overcomes prejudice and saves Christmas one particularly blustery year. Along the way, he meets an abundance of unforgettable characters: his dentallyobsessed elf pal Hermey; the affable miner Yukon Cornelius and his motley crew of puppies; the scary/adorable Abominable Snow Monster; a legion of abandoned, but still chatty, toys; and a rather grouchy Santa. In addition to the title song that inspired it, this 53-minute tape is crammed with catchy tunes such as"Silver and Gold" and "Holly Jolly Christmas." 5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious, Wondrous, theGreatest Rudolph of Them All!
Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer is indeed the most marvelous Christmas film ever! It is one of many superb animated films written by a great man named Romeo Muller. Rudolph is doubtless his best-loved work. I remember watching the film as a child, delighted and enraptured by the story that it told. Do you remember? Sam the Snowman as narrator (voiced and sung in the performance of a lifetime by Burl Ives); Rudolph the misfit and rejected reindeer; Rudolph's friend, Hermy the Elf, also a misfit because he doesn't like to make toys but wants to be a dentist; Yukon Cornelius, the prospector who befriends them both; the Abominable Snowmonster of the North (whom Yukon, in prospector slang, invariably calls a "bumble"); the Island of Misfit Toys, and its winged lion ruler, King Moonracer; and many other characters and story threads. The presentation, interweaving, and resolution of all of these elements is positively Shakespearean in deftness, wit, poetic beauty and brevity of expression, depth, pathos, joy, moral instruction, and the sense that all ends as indeed it should. Grounded in a deep and sparkling love of all creation, these qualities characterize all of Romeo Muller's films. If you will see it devotedly--indeed, if you will see any and all of Romeo's films--you will become a finer, more compassionate, and a more truly loving human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immortal Christmas Classic FeaturingThe Most Famous Reindeer Of All
A "true treasure", is really the only way to describe this legendary Christmas television special that originally premiered in 1964. Arthur Rankin's totally captivating stop motion animation was a bench mark for everything that has come since and even with all of our modern computer technology nothing could come close to the beauty of the creations here. The story of that most famous of reindeers, the one and only Rudolph who's initial drawback of having a shiny nose eventually becomes his chief asset, is beautifully told in a music filled special narrated by Burl Ives in a perfect piece of casting as Sam the snowman. This special has quite rightly become a Christmas instituation every year since its initial release and appeals equally to both children and adults with its timeless message of tolerance and acceptance of all who are different. It has happily now been given a deserving release onto DVD back in its original form complete with deleted songs and a superb restoration.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent, but do not ask for the impossible
I will try not to repeat what other reveiwers have said, so I will be short about all the qualities of this miniseries: excellent actors, engrossing storyline, excellent reconstruction of the siege as it happened.
5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
Although I just viewed the abridged version, I found it highly suspenseful and riveting. Otool and Strauss were exceptional--that's what made the drama so compelling. Each man was intensely resolved to achieve his goal, and neither would surrender to the other. Also, each hero was extremely human--sensitive and thoughtful--despite the pluck and resolve each had.

5-0 out of 5 stars A cult silent epic movie!
This is an exciting silent drama, featuring one of the most emotive aerial sequences for those ages, with superb photography. A true homage to the brave pilots of the WW1. William Wellman' finest film, made with courageous and honor' s sense. The first awarded film makes for you an absolute must-see.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Great American Classic Film
If you were only to ever sit down to watch one silent film - Wings should be that film.I have a VHS copy and have taken to watching it judiciously just to preserve the tape. This needs to be out on DVD!The plot is elegant and well thought out.If anyone has convinced you that you can't tell a complex story without a lot of dialogue, just show them this masterpiece to shut them up.I'm sure that Lucas must have been a fan of Wings when I watch the X-wing fighter sequences in the Star Wars films.Even so, Lucas didn't do as good a job as these folks did back in the 1920's.The flying is brilliant, the actors do most of their own flying and stunt work, and the emotion is startling and powerful.Watch Wings, and then be prepared to reevaluate every film you've ever seen - this is a true masterwork.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit above average, I guess.
Well, here is exactly the type of silent film that most people do not watch nowadays; it's neither a comedy like the Charlie Chaplin movies, nor a horror film like Nosferatu. This, instead, is a typical American action/drama flick, with ample quantities of both.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars streep is a creep but goldie rawks!
why does meryl streep continue to think she can do comedy?(then again, why does meryl streep continue to think she can do drama?)but never mind, bruce willis is wonderfully understated here and goldie is goldie.this is hardly a great movie but its fun for what it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC MOVIE THAT WARRANTS A WIDESCREEN RELEASE ASAP!
This movie is a real hoot, with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn embroiled in a Bette Davis/Joan Crawford-type feud... the plot was pure genius and the special effects were ahead of their time. With terrific performances by all the leads, this one is an "essential video" for your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A witty and funny comedy
A witty and funny comedy with a dark and hysterically devilish undertone. The three actors, Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis play their parts brilliantly making what could be an oddball script into a brilliantly comedic classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Within Reason ~ The Perfect Ingenue
When I talk with people about prejudice. I remind them that blind rejection of someone who could become a very good friend is inane and self-defeating.The same can be applied to those "modernists" who reject the innocent and great movies of the 1930s to the 50s and even some 1960s, because "they ain't with it, man." They'll never know some great joys such as the grand musicalssuch as the great period love story about (in part) the democracizing of France as experienced by New World Travelers. The Nelson Eddy-Jeanette MacDonald movies are classic examples, from which many of the greatest American love songs have come."New Moon," for example. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Sigmund Romberg?Untouchable!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald
5-0 out of 5 stars A PRIME MACDONALD & EDDY MUSICAL.
A beautifully filmed version of the famous 1928 Hammerstein-Romberg operetta. In 1789, the Duke de Vidier, a young French aristocrat, renounces his claim of nobility to further the cause of the revolution by freeing the bond servants in New Orleans. While posing as a deported servant named Charles Michon, the Duke sails on a New Orleans bound ship where he meets the spoiled Marianne de Beaumanoir.......Naturally the above roles are filled by none other than Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, respectively. The working title of this film was LOVER COME BACK, and it was sometimes broadcast on television as PARISIAN BELLE. An earlier 1931 version starred Grace Moore and Lawrence Tibbett.Buster Keaton and Nat Pendelton can be seen very briefly as bondsmen. The wonderful score includes such perennials as LOVER COME BACK TO ME, STOUTHEARTED MEN, SOFTLY AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE & ONE KISS.The steamboat scenes were shot at Santa Catalina Island by Clyde de Vinna. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Completely implausible plot
I fail to understand what the true story could have been that the film is supposedly based on. The plot is completely implausible. Leaving aside the basic premise of the film that Gallimard can sleep with a man without noticing this man was in fact a man and not a woman... just one example: does anybody really believe that the French police (perhaps with the exception of Luis de Funes) would transport two suspects together so that they can conveniently discuss a common strategy of hiding their former spying activiites? Preposterous if you ask me. Not to mention that there were absolutely no bumps on the road during the whole scene in the police van... (was that perhaps a hovercraft?) And there are also more improbabilities that the average European or American eyes fail to see but that left my Chinese wife totally flabbergasted... I wonder if David Cronenberg ever bothered to consult experts in the field as is the good practice with movies that involve distant regions, long-gone periods of history or special fields of human activity. Now back to the basic premise of the film, and I am not spoiling the final surprise for anyone because you figure out Butterfly is a man as soon as you have a look at the photographs on the box of the videocasette... my only explanation is that Gallimard was in fact bisexual and because of that decided to play the part of Butterfly himself in this weird relationship... be this a postscript to the dicusssion in the previous reviews as to whether John Lone was sufficiently female to be persuasive... All that having been said, the movie has its good moments and an intensive atmosphere, maybe too theatrical at times, but overall worth watching if you are a fan of things oriental or like to explore sexual ambiguities...

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
I don't think anyone could have done justice to writing the screenplay to M Butterfly (based on David Henry Hwang's stage play) than Hwang himself. While it is a bit of a departure from the 1988 play based on the true story of a French diplomat who falls in love with a Chinese opera singer and the disastrous outcome of their affair, as a film it could not have been done otherwise.5-0 out of 5 stars Who's French??
Yet another spectacular tale of love and maddness with a Freudian twist by the great David Cronenberg. There are some slight flaws with the film such as a cast portraying French people, none of which sporting French accents. But I suppose thats better than trying to do a French accent and it being inconsistant. All-in-all though, a really great, really strange (though not as strange as some of his other work) surprisingly poetic movie. Definately a must see for fans of Cronenberg and Jeremy Irons alike. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Made-for-TV movies in recent years.
Vlad from New Haven should stick to watching cop shows and shoot 'em ups.He says "The movie is very confusing and it doesn't really show what's supposed to be so significant about Kertz."Really?Spelling KURTZ's name correctly in your review would be a place to start. The film is partly an examination of primitive lifestyles and ancient beliefs, when they come face to face with the intruders from so-called "civilized" society, in the context of what happens to an individual when, as indeed any sane person might, he begins to question everything he previously held to be true.Whether the outcome would be to live the way Kurtz (clearly displayed as an intelligent, literary individual) eventually chose, is open to question, but that in itself is part of the film's allure:What would You/I/A.N.Other do in similar circumstances? What would we become?Alas, modern day tv and movie viewing seems only to consist of sitting in the armchair with a bag of popcorn and yawning during the dialogue sandwiched between the sex, violence and car chases.Vlad, some movies require that you bring a little something to the proceeding yourself, and in so doing you'll take away far more than you ever imagined...not every movie has to have endless explosions in it and square-jawed "heroes" saving the world single handedly at the last minute. The Conrad novel is a very clearly defined portrait of the era in which it was written; European robber barrons plundering ivory in the Belgium Congo, whilst displaying an utter distain towards the natives they encounter along the way, fearing them whilst exploiting them at the same time - The character of Marlow (named as a tribute to the great British writer Christopher Marlowe, second only to, and some claim better than, William Shakespeare; the name Marlowe then being cast as the Knight-errant private eye in seedy Los Angeles by Raymond Chandler) is an "everyman" dispatched by the greedy and wealthy to captain a boat up river and find Kurtz, one of the companies most successful plunderers who appears to have "gone native."What Marlow discovers along the way is far more profound than anything he has encountered before; black African customs and civilized European white behaviour are not so far apart after all; a telling scene is Marlow's repulsion when he witnesses a white European drunkenly beating a black native at the final outpost before his own journey into the darkness. The director Nicholas Roeg captures well nearly every core aspect of the novel, showing clearly that Marlow finds a form of friendship and actual help from the Africans, whilst most of his own (white) fellow company employees make every attempt to prevent him from accomplishing his mission.Heart of Darkness was NOT the basis of Apocalypse Now, and Apocalypse was in no way "the' movie of the book - Heart of Darkness as clearly one of many allegorical inspirations Coppola used in Apocalypse Now, which was far more a "Vietnam experience" movie than it was a European Empire fable.Interestingly, the similarities between the actions of Europeans in Africa and Americans in Asia a century or so later, are clearly apparent, but Apolcayplse Now casts a far wider net, utilising elements of T.S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land alongside many other sources.Considering Heart of Darkness was probably a fairly low budget Made-for-TV movie, one has to congratulate Roeg on achieving such an excellent evocation of the original novel, and extracting such fine performances from Malkovich and Fox in particular. One cannot even begin to imagine how great this movie could have been had, say, Roeg been given a feature film budget to make it around the time he was coming up withsuch classics as The Man Who Fell to Earth and Don't Look Now.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you want a movie version of the novel just rent Apocalypse Now
I sort of knew it wouldn't be good when I rented it and I didn't even know it was a Made-For-TV-Movie then (my bad). Well anyway, it's the movie adaptation of the classic novel which is also the basis for Apocalypse Now. It does have some good acting from Tim Roth, the main character, Isaach de Bankole as their black helper who is also a cannibal, Morten Faldaas as the harlequin (the hippie in Apocalypse), and John Malkovich as Kertz (Brando's character). The problem is that the directing is pretty horrible. For most of the movie nothing happens and then the actual exciting part (where he meets Kertz) is way too short. The movie is very confusing and it doesn't really show what's supposed to be so significant about Kertz.

4-0 out of 5 stars A rebound for Roeg
I was curious about this film when I heard about it years ago. I love Nicolas Roegs early work but saw that his later movies were weaker and it seemed Roeg had lost his magic. "Heart of Darkness" is a Nicolas Roeg film and it's quite nice to see the old boy has still got it in him. The subject matter suits his odd style of film making. A good film. DVD please!!! ... Editorial Review

This 1982, 180-minute television remake of the original MGM feature, produced 30 years before, is the rare makeover of a classic that works quite well under its own steam. Anthony Andrews plays the disinherited knight who returns from the Third Crusades and is determined to raise the ransom to free a kidnapped King Richard (Julian Glover). With his bid rebuffed by his estranged father (Michael Hordern), and the affection of the latter's ward, Rowena (Lysette Anthony), compromised, Ivanhoe looks toward the generosity of the beautiful Rebecca (Olivia Hussey)--whose father (James Mason) he rescued from anti-Semitic Normans--for help. But a plot by faithless friends to discredit Ivanhoe, and his subsequent partnership with Robin Hood (David Robb) to save the day, keep this story from slowing down even for a minute. Originally a miniseries, this production has enough breadth to provide lots of breathing room for the script and cast to mine all the drama they can from Sir Walter Scott's novel. This is also a great-looking movie, with wall-to-wall pageantry, superb costumes--the works. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but it doesn't do justice to the book
I must admit that I loved the book.I was hoping that this would be an accurate movie or at least keeping with the spirit.I found that it was a bit flat and that it didn't have the flair and excitment that the book had.Well done for a tv series, but not likely to satisfy the die hard fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars "If I could only get my strength back!"
"Ivanhoe" is a curiosity of literature; a long adventure novel whose hero spends most of the plot unconscious, a medieval romance with a not-so-subtle rail against prejudice, and a tale that proves when all else fails, have Robin Hood show up. This made-for-TV adaptation follows the book fairly closely, and it stars the always welcome, decidedly delicious Anthony Andrews to boot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love Affairs and Pageantry
From what I remember of the 1952 version, it was all about Robert Taylor and whether or not he would wind up with Elizabeth Taylor or Joan Fontaine.Today it seems like a different world, of course, and even in 1952 Taylor was a bit long in the tooth to play Wilfred of Ivanhoe properly, while Liz Taylor was a good 20 years younger than him and way younger than Joan Fontaine (who plays her successful rival, a lesson that even the mature women can still get a man--a lesson we heard very seldom in the 1950s).

5-0 out of 5 stars The music by itself makes it 5 stars
If the purpose of this movie was to showcase Willie and his band to movie audiences rather than shoot for an Oscar, then it works, because the music is outstanding. I was blown away that beautiful Dyan Cannon has a great singing voice. Amy Irving is also enjoyable to watch and listen to. But obviously Willie himself is the star of the show, and his singing is unbeatable. I find myself clapping at the end of "Angel Flying Too Close" while watching this video-- hey, it's that good!
5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite Classic!
I saw it when I was a young fan, and now I'm an old fan, and I still love it! Classic country, classic Willie Nelson(when he actually sang the whole song, not syncopated short cuts!), classic somebody-done-somebody-wrong-song.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dyan Cannonshines in wonderful backstage musical-romance
1980's "Honeysuckle Rose" is best known as the first film to star Willie Nelson, but its true shining star is Dyan Cannon, in a wonderful, atypically understated performance as Willie's loyal wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie and series for children of any age!!
The entire LBT series, and this movie in particular, deals with issues that all kids, parents and families are faced with on a daily basis (love, friendship, trust, just to name a few). The family issues include single parenting and adoption (both touch my family) and it is a great way for my son to learn that each family is different. In this particular movie, Littlefoot and his friends are dealing with "bullies" and it is a perfect chance for parents and children to discuss how to deal with other children who may not be as nice as they are.My son, who is almost 5, names all dinosaurs after the LBT characters, we have the CD playing in the car most of the time and he watches both of the Singa-a-Long tapes constantly.I know he learns something new each time he watches one of the movies because of the discussions we have.I cannot praise this series enough!!

2-0 out of 5 stars The Time of Great Confusion
I couldn't understand if they were speaking language or else not. Sometimes I lay awake at night and wonder if this is how those graceful creatures spoke to each other. Although this movie was a bit too artsy for me, I still thought it was pretty good even though I couldn't understand what they were saying. Overall, this is my third favorite Land Before Time movie, only the seventh and the ninth are much better. Littlefoot still rules the Jurassic Period.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kids will enjoy it, but might get the wrong message...
I did not like this movie at all, and I have taken it out of our collection and put it in the trash. The only reason that I didn't like this movie is because of the bullies in it that pester Little Foot and his friends. It is negative, and have found my two year old son starting to act out some of the behaviours that the bullies do in this movie.
