5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale As Old As Time Done Right
Beauty and the Beast may well be the very best animated film Disney ever produced. The characterizations of the leads are great as we have the sweet book loving Belle and the the flawed but totally redeemable "Beast".Gaston and Belle's father are also well drawn and memorable as are the comic relief bearing "enchanted" servants at the castle. There's something for everyone as the story is so romantic it leaves a lot of grown up ladies sighing, the bad guys are not too scary for the little ones and for the rest it is just a great tale.Plus Beauty and the Beast has some of the best songs ever written for a Disney production. No wonder the Broadway musical hasbeen such a hit as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tied for first for best Disney feature
I must've been about 10 when I first saw the Lion King and I was practically floored. Those catchy-for-their-own-good songs, the animation(well, me now talking) and that wildebeast stampede. The other one is Beauty and the Beast which for the life of me I can't remember seeing when I was young yet loved every minute of it. Revisiting it now I still love it and on one hand seeing it as a landmark in Disney's catalogue but also one in a series of films that marked a brief creative comeback.
2-0 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Beast
Yep, Disney animation. All my students see this movie at some point between leaving high school and when I meet them as university students. Sometimes, their Chinese university teachers show it to them in class. So, I thought I'd see why they love it so much. I'm still wondering. This is a two-page short story, not a film. But on the bright side, if you skip all the songs it's under an hour. I've never enjoyed a singing toon in my life. ... Read more

This lovely, 1991 adaptation of Elizabeth Von Arnim's novel has a superb cast and a tone so mellow you can feel your pulse get slower. Josie Lawrence and Miranda Richardson play a pair of unhappily married women who rent an Italian villa for a month, sharing the rent with a crusty Englishwoman (Joan Plowright) and a lonely aristocrat (Polly Walker). Sun, rest, sinking into the green grass for long naps--they all have a soulful effect on the quartet, and then on the men in their lives who make a surprise visit. Mike Newell (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this movie!
What I'd like to know is WHY ISN'T IT ON DVD YET?I see all kinds of stupid movies, old movies, boring movies coming out all the time. Why does it take so long for the good ones to come out?I don't get it.If it ever does come out on DVD I would highly recommend that you watch it--you will not be disappointed!I rank it up there with my other favorite movies like A&E's Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Sound of Music, First Churchills, Meet me in St. Louis, Anne of Green Gables, well, you get the picture. Those are all different categories than Enchanted April, but it is one of the greats in my opinion!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, life-affirming movie!
I can't surpass all the past reviewers in praising this film.Just see it - a wonderful and beautiful movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help demand DVD release NOW
In a review below, Tim Brain addresses an open letter to the DVD Release Coordinator at Paramount Studios. What a great idea. If everyone reading this would write a letter to Paramount and request the release of this superb film on DVD maybe we could get somewhere or at least an answer as to why it is STILL not available. Can we all join forces to help get this movie out.

Not an ideal choice for younger kids, this hip and violent animated feature from Disney was nevertheless a huge smash in theaters and on video, and it continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed Broadway production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is sabotaged by a rivalrous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking, and the music is more palatable than in many Disney features. But be cautious: this is too intense for the Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Monarchies tend to create dysfunctional families.
Disney's "The Lion King" is a pretty good movie about a young lion cub, named Simba, who is to become king of a place called Pride Rock located in the appropriately named Pride Lands. I always thought that the part where Simba's father, Mufasa, is killed by his brother, Scar, was kind of tough to watch. On the other hand, from a historical standpoint, scenarios like these were at some point a commoplace reality, all because of an intense desire for power. The most memorable part of the film is the scene where Scar turns on the hyenas, to whom he'd referred as the "real enemy," then tries to make up with them right afterwards by calling them his "friends." The best part was the subsequent reaction by the hyenas to his double crossing.
5-0 out of 5 stars il'd love to give this 20 out of 5 stars
this movie was incredable. i don't understand how people can dislike this film. this movie's deep and intense story made it great for children AND their parents, a feat rarely accomplished. but rather than stay depressing and traumatizing, this film goes from drama to side-splitting humor within 13 seconds. the best part is that this is all done with seemless perfection.
1-0 out of 5 stars dont mess with classics
I give the original 5 stars, but why is disney taking all its classics and adding new songs to it? i was so dissapointed when i rented this and there were new scenes in it. i dont want "new and improved" i want the original, the one i watched when i was younger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars anything that relates to the little mermaid is the best
who ever tries to say that disney is just in it for the money is stupid, and doesnt really know what they r talking about. like on one of the comments it said that melody had no mermaid traits, that she could hold her breath for up to and over 3 min., could talk to the fish, and could hold her eyes open under the water,well...DUH!!! those r mermaid traits, so i dont know wat they were thinking, and its a disney movie, for littler kids, they try to make it interesting in the kids eyes!!!so grrr! the first one i must say was better, but i still love the sequal!!

You know those sequels that are even better than the original? The Little Mermaid II is not one of them. You know those sequels that are thrown together and so bad that they leave an awful taste in your mouth, even regarding the original? It is not one of those either. What this movie is is lovingly crafted, well-thought out, and a nice effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Product
Not only is this a truly great workoutthat will get you in shape and keep you in shape, it has also been a real inspiration to me in my life and work... When I was getting ready to produce the NEW SEX NOW video, there was a lot of back and forth about whether I should actually be in the video myself or hire performers to do the New Sex demonstration (I am an Ivy League graduate, after all!)One of my confidants asked me, "Is Billy Blanks in his Tae Bo video?" and I said, "He is." And my friend said, "If he's in his video, then you should be in your video." So I am. Thanks Billy, for making a great program and for being such an inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent workout to fight cellulite/squishy out of shape legs and butt
A few years ago I borrowed these tapes from my sister when I wanted to get in shape for a trip to the islands and decided to start with the basic tape.Let me start by saying I HATE jumping around and aerobics on a whole. I was not terribly out of shape but I had lost all my muscle tone and definition in my legs and [back]. Anyway, I started doing the basic Monday through Friday and let me tell you, within 3 weeks I changed my squishy [back] and thighs into sculpted thighs with NO cellulite and a beautiful [back] (not one line or lump or bump, smooth booty)it was a wonderful feeling to put on shorts or a bikini with so much pride and confidence. My abs were like a washboard...I recently decided to start working out again and I was looking through old photos and came across a pic of myself in a bikini shot that I took on that island and then I said to myself TAE-BO!!!!I have to laugh because I always refer to those days as my glory days and when people would ask how I did it I would say "tae-bo basic" and low carbs...anyway the point is that I know it works...trust me.Needless to say, the tapes were borrowed and never returned to me and so after googling them, I found them on amazon and I purchased the basic tape and I am eagerly awaiting its arrival (I mean literally twiddling thumbs in excitement). If you want a sculpted body and a relatively manageable (you can get throught it) workout tai-bo basic is for you.I had bought the tae-bo live a couple years ago to get the same effect but I couldn't follow through it was too hard, I felt drained after, that's why I am endorsing the BASIC ORIGINAL tape because I was able to stick to it.Anyway sorry for the long review but I just had to add my 2 cents. For all the people out there, especially the ladies that are fighting to get back muscle tone and are not afraid of a sculpted cellulite free body, do tae-bo ORIGINAL BASIC workout and eat healhty meals limiting the food you know is crap and you will see results, well I did so it's worth a try. ... From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Disney's Finest Achievements!
In a wonderful kingdom under the sea lives the beautiful mermaid princess, Ariel, seventh and youngest daughter of King Triton, ruler of Atlantica. Ariel's feisty spirit and gorgeous red hair make her a bit of a favorite among Triton's daughters, and her passion for learning human ways and collecting of their artifacts causes much stress to her family and friends. After spying a handsome, young, human prince aboard a ship one evening and saving his life, Ariel is instantly love-struck, and this is completely unacceptable to her overbearing, human-hating father. In a desperate and rebellious action, Ariel turns to a seductive sea witch for help, who takes possession of Ariel's beautiful voice in exchange for a magical spell. The spell changes Ariel's fish-like tail into a lovely pair of human legs, but there is a condition attached. If Ariel can't get the young prince to fall in love with her in three days and seal it with a kiss, the spell will be broken and Ariel will join the witch Ursula's collection of hideously transformed victims. Luckily, the prince is in love with her already, though he doesn't know it. Prince Eric is obsessed with finding the young lady who saved him from drowning that night and whom he caught a glimpse of as she sang to him just before disappearing. When he takes in the now human Ariel after she appears seemingly washed up from a shipwreck, her inability to speak makes him sure she is not the one. Voiceless and only left with her beauty and exuberant charm, Ariel and her animal friends must try their best to make the prince see that she is the lost love he has been searching for, but the Sea Witch will do all she can to stop them before time runs out! If Ursula holds power over Princess Ariel, the king himself will have to bow down before her!

5-0 out of 5 stars golf life as it used to be
As a former tour player now out of the game, this film captures alot of what the PGA tour used to be.The race to "Monday Qualifiers" by what we were referred to as "rabbits" was filled with alot of the shenanigans this movie portrays. I'm sure the PGA wasn't especially thrilled with the movie, but this system produced greats like Trevino, Rodriguez, and many more.Would love to see this movie out in DVD (haven't owned a VCR in years)soon! As per other reviews, B movie with great content and storyline. Would by 10 DVD's for gifts for my golfing buddies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Film!
Rebecca is one of my very favorite movies. I have seen it many times and I never tire of it. The story is ageless and simple. An aristocratic widower marries a shy young girl and takes her to his castle-like home. There, she lives haunted by the shadow of Rebecca, his first wife. It is Rebecca did this, Rebecca did that, Rebecca all the time. A stunning classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hitchcock Movie for People Who Don't Like Hitchcock Films
Looking back in retrospect, I truly believe this film was the launching point of Hitchcock's career. He went on to have one of the most glorious careers in Hollywood history. Although he never won an Academy Award Oscar for the Best Director award; Hitchcock showed that he truly belonged in the top echelon of directors. Especially in his golden era: circa 1951 to 1959.
5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Version Of The Romantic Suspense Novel. A-List Cast+Excellent Script+Flawless Direction=The DEFINITIVE Version.
Alfred Hitchcock's first film made in America was an adaptation of the highly successful novel "Rebecca." In the role of the mysterious, but handsome, Maxim DeWinter, is Laurence Olivier (coming off the success of "Wuthering Heights" the year before; please see my review on it), giving a complex performance yet again. Joan Fontaine plays the nameless heroine, Judith Anderson plays the sinister Mrs. Danvers and George Sanders plays Rebecca's devious cousin. Very faithful to the novel, this film is. Recommended for English classes. Not Rated. ... Read more

Oddball scientist Fred Z. Randall (Harland Williams) is nobody's idea of an astronaut. But he turns out to be NASA's only hope when the first manned mission to Mars comes up one man short. So it's up to Fred, who instantly rubs the ship's commander (William Sadler) and specialist (Jessica Lundy) the wrong way--but makes eerily good friends with the ship's chimp. A movie whose rude, gas-laced sense of humor will appeal to kids; adults may also get a few chuckles out of Canadian funnyman Williams, who does countless impressions and makes endless faces and funny noises. Think of him as the poor man's Jim Carrey. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You hairy little bed-stealer! This needs to be DVD-released NOW!!!
Rocket Man is another favorite of mine. Recently, UPN teased us by showing it on TV. Got my hopes up that the next time I was at Best Buy or any other DVD retailer that I would finally get my hands on this gem. But no. PLEASE IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, RELEASE THIS ON DVD! To anyone curious about viewing this movie, it's great fun and shouldn't be missed. Harland Williams is absolutely hilarious as a computer whiz who winds up getting sent on a mission to Mars. It's a Disney movie so prepare for a tidy ending as usual, but you'll be laughing the whole way through this journey, especially once they are on Mars. I don't want to give away any more and spoil it for you all, but if you think Williams is funny in Half Baked or even in his bit part as the serial killer in There's Something About Mary just to name a few, he's an absolute riot in this. For now, you'll have to rent/buy on VHS, but let's hope that this makes its way onto DVD soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Thee To DVD At Once!
DVD please? I saw this movie when it aired on A&E, and it captivated me as a child, and still does as an adult. The theme song is great, and I still find myself listening to it!!! I became a fan of Sandra Dee's after I saw her in "Gidget" and "Imitation Of Life" and I thought her performance was so real and heart-wrenching. Constance Ford, as her bitchy, controlling mother Helen, gives a strong portrayal of a bitter, frigid, unhappy woman who takes her anguish out on everyone around her, even her daughter. (She really gives Mommie Dearest a run for her money). The scene where she forces Molly to submit to a pelvic exam after she and lover-boy Johnny (the late Troy Donahue) have an accident on the beach (the boat capsizes) is horrible and makes the viewer grimace. The fact that the doctor was old and gross looking, and began to unbutton Molly's blouse without her consent, as she screamed, "Oh please, no, I want my father! I've been a good girl! I haven't done anything wrong!!" makes it uncomfortable, but it also makes you despise Ford's character, as I'm sure that was the intention. Richard Egan as Molly's father Ken, is so handsome and gentle at times (he was equally effective in Walt Disney's "Pollyanna" as Dr. Chilton) is a man who is trapped in a loveless marriage who finds and falls in love again with Dorothy McGuire, as Sylvia, his first love, who also happens to be the mother of Molly's boyfriend, Johnny!!! One of Egan's best lines is as he and Helen are having an explosive argument. Ken finishes off his end by saying, "Why must you insist on making sex itself a filthy word!" Arthur Kennedy, as Johnny's drunken father Bart was one of the actor's best later performances. The conflict between the two couples and the predicament that follows (Molly becomes pregnant by Johnny) was considered racy for its day, but considering how little is shown, you have to wonder what all the fuss was about!!! (Although the "King Kong" reference could bear some debate on that subject). The argument between Molly and her mother at the beginning of the movie, sums up the times and also, in a way, the relationships between mothers and daughters. Molly: "Daddy, do I have to?" Ken: "Do you have to what?" Molly: "Wear this middy blouse to shore like a twelve-year-old! And she says I have to wear this armor-padded bra to flattenme out and a girdle! This thing even hurts, and I couldn't squeeze into this girdle with dynamite!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Nemo is a great "catch" for the whole family
Pixar Studios have done it again. I have to say that these guys are totally good in computer animation, as well as in storytelling. Rarely do those qualities come together but here they are, delivering unto the audience once again something that one can only be drowned with wonder. Such is the marvel of Finding Nemo.
5-0 out of 5 stars A really great movie!!!
I really loved this movie. I have watched it over and over again. I have never gotten sick of it. It makes me laugh and cry all in the same DVD. This movie is a must for all kids and adult kids too. Ellen's role is just great!!! It fits her to a tee. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indian Love Call Classic
If ever a film deserved the label "classic romance," Rose Marie is the one.It starts out kinda slow, but gradually builds to a heartwrenching climax. Marie de Flor (Jeanette MacDonald) is an opera star who learns her brother, John Flower (James Stewart) has escaped from prison, allegedly killing a Canadian Royal Mounted Police in the process, and is in hiding.De Flor hires an Indian guide to take her tohim.Along the way into the Canadian wilderness, she meets up with Sgt. Bruce (Nelson Eddy),the Mounty tracking down her brother. She starts to give him a false name, "Rose . . ." but he recognizes her as a star, and assumes her full name is Rose Marie de Flor.Sgt. Bruce is immediately attracted to de Flor, but before long he guesses her relationship Flower, his prey. It's one of the all time classic dilemmatic situations as love develops between the two, who are each using the other to their own, opposite ends. De Flor depends on Bruceto survive the rugged trek through the wilderness, not knowing how much he knows; he expects her to lead him to her brother, while pretending to be along to protect her.I don't think it's ever been done more effectively, with "Indian Love Call" adding a haunting effect all the while. The cast also includes Reginald Owen, Alan Mowbray, Una O'Connor, and David Niven in an early, one scene, bit part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and haunting...
There is poignancy at the heart of this movie. It's a love story and love comes at a high price.Rose Marie, like many Eddy-MacDonald films, is filled with love and loss, yearning and sacrifice. The final scene of Rose Marie demonstrates these characteristics perhaps better than any of their other movies. This is a fine film, but it is dated and should be viewed in the context of its time. There are laughs, romance, bittersweet moments and beautiful, heart-felt singing. The MacDonald-Eddy chemistry is magical. This is a movie that should not be overlooked or forgotten. It will stay with you after you've seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertainment at its best
Rose Marie has it all. Wonderful music, a great story. Good clean entertainment. As for acting, this is Jeanette's and Nelson's best. It is also the first movie Jimmy Stewart was in.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream Come True After Eurovision--"RIVERDANCE"
With tremendous applause and a standing ovation at the 1994 Eurovision's 7 minute intermission; Michael Flatley, Jean Butler, and an Irish troupe of dancers tapped their way into the record books. It was all that was talked about that night long ago. "Riverdance" was born soon after.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of All the Riverdance Shows
I have seen this particular show several times on video that I rented a few years back. I have never been able to find it anywhere since, in any video store or anywhere else. I have also seen the other Riverdance shows done in New York and Geneva, but this show is by far, the BEST Riverdance show ever! The collaboration of the Riverdance Company, Bill Whelan, Michael Flatley and everyonelse that was involved in this show is just pure magic! As much as I have enjoyed seeing the other Riverdance shows and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance -- there just seems to be something very special about this show! Hope you will get it reproduced very soon! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
A friend mentioned this movie to me.I had never heard of it, but was glad to be able to find it at my library. After watching it and loving it, I was thrilled when I found a used VHS copy in a second hand shop. This is one of those movies that can be pulled out and watched at least every year.I first viewed it over the course of four evenings and each time, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with Jean and Joe.At the beginning of the movie, Jean is on the island of Malaya with her brother and a group of English workers. The Japanese overtake the island and cart off the men, apparently to a work camp. They force the women and children of the group to walk from place to place with accompanying soldiers. We see the woman at times afraid, at times bold, on the verge of giving up, yet determined to keep on.We see them sick, hungry and dirty. We watch some of them die. This is where the movie is the most engrossing. The characters are well developed and I almost felt as if I was marching right along with them.I came to love the character of Jean--she's smart and determined and also has a lot of compassion and a sense of humor. One of the best parts of the movie is when this rag tag group of women and children meet up with two Australian prisoners of war. There's an immediate attraction between Jean and one of the prisoners, Joe, and his energy infuses Jean with new life during the short time they are together. After the war, Jean inherits a large amount of money. She has never forgotten Joe and after much time and effort on both their parts, Joe and Jean get together again--this time in Australia.Jean uses her determination and smarts to develops some businesses, all the while wondering if she can make it on the outback.Joe loves Jean, but wonders himself whether or not he can ask her to live the life he loves.Their romance is appealing--they are both strong, independent people who have a passion for life and for each other. If you appreciate a long, thoughtful story with interesting and likeable characters, I would highly recommend this wonderful film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Film and Worth the Purchase
This is a great DVD that our son loves to watch. I don't think it is as good as the original but sequels rarely are. It's certainly worth the purchase and has a lot of extras on the disc. I have seen it less expensive in other stores however.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buzz & Woody Are Back
Yes it's true and people didn't think it could be done, Buzz & Woody back for a second adventure. In this film Woody finds out the real reason why he was made, he was a character on a TV show and Woody is one of the last remaining dolls made for that TV show.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pick for all
Toy Story 2 is just as good as (or even better than) Toy Story 1.Great animation, very funny and teaches valuable lessons without the sadness. Some of the animated movies have scenes that are hard to watch, for example the opening scene in Finding Nemo or the beginning of Tarzan. My son watches those scenes in horror (and so do I).Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 1 have such an original storyline that is so endearing, and it is such a well rounded movie that it is an excellent pick for all.I also like the fact that the toys don't sing and dance as in most animated movies, and yet the music is excellent.I particularly love the song (composer: Randy Newman) when Buzz realizes he is just a toy and can't fly and tries to fly out the window.Me and my son play along to that part! ... The 1951 John Huston classic, set in Africa during World War I, garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain in Africa, who provides passage for a Christian missionary spinster (Katharine Hepburn). Taking an instant, mutual dislike to one another, the two endure rough waters, the presence of German soldiers, and their own bickering to finally fall into one another's arms. This is classic Huston material--part adventure, part quest--but this time with a pair of characters who'd all but given up on happiness. This movie is way looooong over due to be put on DVD. I find it amazing how some of the crapiest movies get released on DVD, yet this wonderful gem of a movie has yet to see the light of day on
5-0 out of 5 stars Should be rated "G" not Unrated.
This movie should have a "G" rating becauseit's a classic film from 1952. I saw this movie in 1990 when I was 10. I liked it then and, I like it now. There's nothing explicit in this movie at all. That's why it should be rated "G".

5-0 out of 5 stars Undiminished Classic Carries the Unshakable Triumvirate of Bogart, Hepburn and Huston at Their Peak
The reputation of this deserved classic rests primarily on the shoulders of master director John Huston and his two legendary stars, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. The story itself, penned by Huston and James Agee (with uncredited help from Peter Viertel) based on a novel by C.S. Forester, is a two-character high adventure that moves its narrative in a rather contrived manner. Yet, the resulting 1951 film sparkles in a burnished aura of Hollywood lore, as Clint Eastwood saw fit to make a film about the production itself with 1990's "White Hunter, Black Heart" and Hepburn herself wrote an entertaining memoir 36 years after the fact with the seemingly apt title, "The Making of the African Queen: Or How I Went to Africa With Bogart, Bacall and Huston and Almost Lost My Mind". Between Bogart's apparent boozing, Huston's big game obsessions, Hepburn's idiosyncrasies and the challenging African jungle, it must have been quite an unpredictable set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Haunting, Very Disturbing, Very Good!!!
These two women deserved so much more credit than they got for this movie back then. Two of the very best performances in movie history.Anne Bancroft and Sissy Spacek have that rare talent that comes through in every role they have played. In the original play Sissy's character was played by the great Kathy Bates who I here did an incredible job at it.The movie version of the play is a great adaptation.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant !
WOW! Brilliantly written work and adaption to film.Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft could not have nailed this performance more perfect, amazing talent.Marsha Norman seems to have captured the "Sane Suicidal", something I'm not aware has been accomplished to this degree.

5-0 out of 5 stars I say No Mamma!
I know about alot of movies before I even ever see them this was one of those movies that took me forever to see. when I got around to it I was simply blown away. sissy plays a woman who decides to kill herself! no ends and's or but's she simply is going to do it. telling her mother before she does the final act. I guess what touchs me most about this movie is all that happens in one's life before it's over. not the fact that she is going to kill herself. also alot of stuff having to do with self confidence. there were things in the movie about what sissy thought of herself and why she felt so alone in the world. as simple as getting fired from a job because the way she looked at people to one of her mom's friends saying her hands were too cold. to the failed mothering of her child gone wrong to failed marriage to husband cecil to losing her father. these things might all seem depressing but in one's life alot takes place. all these things have touched a cord and sissy decides to get off the bus. what you get is a touching story and a wonderful film about a mothers attempt to save her child that has decided to take her life. 2 wonderful timeless performances from both actress's. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Man Follows His Star
This is one of the finest 60's westerns dealing with man's struggle for independence, overshadowed by "Hud," though far more entertaining a film. An incredible lineup, a cast of stars and future stars if you watch closely:Bill Bixby(helo pilot), Walter Matthau, George Kennedy, Gena Rowlands and Bill Rausch. A year later you would know Rausch as the one-armed man Dr. Richard Kimble chased for 4 seasons on "The Fugitive." Adapted from,"Brave Cowboy," a simple story about a drifter-cowboy who didn't like fences, this is more fleshed out, with Kirk Douglas trying totalk sense into his friend, by breaking in jail with him, a plausible sub-plot to explain his visit. Douglas has some touching scenes with Gena Rowlands where, at times, he struggles with his conscience and allegiance to his friend. Nevertheless, Douglas escapes and the entire locals pursue. Douglas and his valiant horse outwit all armed forces aganst him as he ascends the mountains to freedom, leading to a terrifying, heart-wrenching climax on a rain-swept highway. The on-lccation scenes are sparingly shot, symbolically at times, never slowing the suspense. There are poetic moments and moments of stark violence, handled with deft assurance. One of those black and white movies that explores the grays as well, you sit in your seat it a daze. Then in a few moments you realize you were experiencing screen "realism." You just want to jump into the screen and run off with Douglas. A rarity. The classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great story and a great film
One of Kirk Douglas' best roles, and a moving film in all respects, well-acted by the superb cast. Contrasts the remnants of the "old west" personified by Douglas, with the "new" west of social activism, progress and consumer products, property--and most symbolically, highways that cut up and limit the open range. When the Old resists the New, the New must deal with the Old on its own terms: humor and respect, but ultimately tragedy, are the results. This movie deserves to be released on DVD as soon as possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Underappreciated Minor Classic
This semi-forgotten 1962 film is a small, lost treasure featuring Kirk Douglas as a cowboy who can't quite come to terms with the modern world. The excellent cast includes Gena Rowlands as the wife of Douglas' best friend, a woman who has little use for the old-world notions of either man; Walter Matthau in an underrated portrayal of a sheriff torn between his admiration for Douglas and his duty to track him down; and Carroll O'Connor in his pre-Archie Bunker days as a truck driver whose path unexpectedly crosses with that of the fugitive cowboy. The film has some quaint morals and notions, and George Kennedy is a bit one-dimensional as a thuggish cop, but these are quibbles. Overall, it's a tightly told and well acted story that neatly crossed genres, featured one of Douglas' most charismatic leading performances, and tackled the theme of old Western individualism vs. the System a good seven years before "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" plowed similar ground. Keep an eye out for it on DVD, because its beautiful black-and-white vistas deserve a new digital rendering. ... Read more

I've never read the book but we love the movie. I've always wanted to read the book but never found time, not much of a reader. I still intend to read it someday but until then this really is an enjoyable movie. I find unrealistic bloopers in movies about how people would really act in any give situation and I have always felt comfortable with the realisticness of this movie. Love it.
